The Timex Expedition Scout Wristwatch: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

- Today, a look at an inexpensive wristwatch with decent legibility, a metal case, and a nifty backlight. A Rolex it is not, but it's a solid watch, and at the end of the day, it's absolutely "good enough" for your EDC.
Here's a link to buy one: amzn.to/2obaQXt Хобби
My wife bought me this watch 17 years ago. I remember when i received it, I thought it was a cheap thirty dollar watch. I was shocked when she told me she paid $80! Unfortunately, I couldn't wear it where i worked at the time (no jewelery allowed). I finally got a job where im allowed to work with a watch and put a new battery in it last week. It runs like new and the indiglo light is perfect. Its taken me over 17 years to finally use and appreciate this watch. Thanks for the review.
Thanks Nick! I started off just being interested in knives and lights but you're getting me into watches now. The holy trinity of wasting money is now complete.

Welcome to the club of professional money wasters
Ive had the brown leather strap version of this little beauty 20 years.. its been beaten half to death, jumped out of planes with, scuba dived and worn in combat. I bought it because it was cheap and I diddnt want to spend money on something that would just break on me,, well guess what,, it looks just as great as it did the day I bought it!
10/10
maybe you are not aware that straps can be replaced...
Great comment and I love a helpful review, but can we get back to you scuba diving and combat? What?
Keep telling you. Timex rules!
That's an unbelievable endorsement.
Do you mean 2 years?
As a mole person, I appreciate the indiglow feature.
What is a mole person?
I love your accent, your voice should be in a Pixar movie.

I had almost forgotten how good Timex always has been as a brand.
I think their styling has gotten a lot better in the last number of years so more people are getting a feel for that.
@@TransistorBased I think that is true.
I just bought a cream colored one and it's amazing… Oh I just saw you were here five years ago… I hope you're okay and still out here. Anyway I think they're nice watches to
Am I the only person that LIKES the Timex tick?
You're not alone
Amen! love that tick
I like it when I’m by my self but when I’m in class I get a lot of looks.
I do like it, but it can get quite annoying sometimes
I love it, it's a throwback and makes the watch feel alive I just put it in another room at njght!
I believe Indiglo will not work if the battery is low so that could serve as an indicator
I genuinely expected a Spyderco Delica for size comparison at this point haha
😂
Wasn't expecting a review from a club stand up comedian from the 50s ...
I stumbled upon your channel, and I have to say I love your videos. You're just authentic and a normal guy that's reviewing watches; very practical.
It's amazing what Timex does with so few dollars. I have one of these in black face and nato strap and absolutely love it. The Indiglo is a super nice feature also unless you don't have a free hand to push the button. I agree with you about the date. I could have been bigger with little change in the mechanicals, I think.
Love your videos, Nick. I always enjoy your sense of humour that you insert into them. Keep it up, and thanks for posting!
I wonder why no other watchmaker has a feature similar to Indiglo? I find it amazing.
Casio Illuminator?
i think he meant on analog watch not digital
Some Seiko SNK's have a full backlit face.
Could you share which ones? A backlit face was one of the things I was looking for in my first analog watch to replace my runner's watch, which really only left me with the Timex Expedition. Any help would be appreciated!
Because it is patented by timex
I own the 43mm version of this watch with a cream dial and I love it. It's the first analog watch I've owned since I had a Fossil watch about 10 years ago. Buying this watch without knowing much about watches and what to expect, I'm extremely satisfied with it. I've heard a lot of people say it's loud, but I can't hear it unless the room is dead quiet or I hold it up to my ear. I'll admit that the dial is busy (would be much better if it didn't have the 13-24 hour markings on the inner part of the dial) and the water resistance leaves a lot to be desired, but overall I love it. I just picked up a cheap Casio AE-1200 (LOVE IT, maybe even more than the Timex) and I'm going to be buying a dressier Citizen Eco-Drive to round out my watch collection (for now...). All that being said, I'm glad I got this Timex because it's served me well so far and has given me an appreciation for watches that I've never had before.
it's a field watch. just what is needed, nothing more, nothing less.
I'm from India and here no proper field watches are available. I'm a geologist & mountaineer & I need something like this all the time.
I see Americans speaking a lot of crap about this watch. Maybe they are right, I don't know, but I find Timex to be pretty decent. Relatively inexpensive and highly functional.
I like it very much.
alot of americans are spoiled.
Vigorous showering may damage the watch? Just how vigorously are you bathing, Nick?!
Then wear it on the other hand!
I take group showers and they can be very vigorous. you should try it.
Mines got water in inside and shut down after one time in my whirlpool
its not that waterproof and also its made of some sort of brass based alloy, i used it on my workouts for a year and now its starting to turn green
david sanders you guys are nuts lol, I love it haha
Excellent watch, been wearing this exact model and color for work for 6 years, no battery change, keeps perfect time and looks good with almost any outfit
Another Enjoyable and honest review from NS.
Just got this same watch with an olive face and leather strap.
" It's a beautiful thing ! "
Pros:
Light in the watch face.
Few analogs have them any more. My local watch shop had none on offer ~ only digital G shocks.
Not that expensive to procure.
Weight :
Fairly small and light watch ; so good for small wrists.
Keeps it simple:
Has time and 24 hr , date plus night lighting. No unnecessary features that you never use anyway, like timers etc .
Cons:
Pretty Basic Design ( vintage retro styling ) with no crown guard . Old watches tended not to have them if military style.
It is my second Expedition and my first one is a more diver - style from 5 or 6 yrs ago. It has proved to be very durable, highly versatile and great value.
As it has a light inside the watch I decided to buy a second online and it seems fine, so far.
If you after a cool little mens military style watch ( in a vintage 1960s look ) this one is one to consider and add to any collection. Its a basic everyday watch to use and enjoy. Reminiscent of the watches they wore during Vietnam War era and gave to GI's.
.... Soldier on !
I just picked one of these up.
I haven’t wore a watch in probably 2 decades.
The value, the clean, minimalist look, the size and slimness, and the easy to read face appeals to me. I am pretty active, so I hate having anything bulky or expensive on my wrist.
It’s only day 2, but so far I am very happy with my Timex Expedition.
How is it after 3 years?
How was it after 4 years?
@@Everydaykaen It’s got a new wrist strap, but it’s still in my rotation.
@@stanshazzam9136 do you know its lug to lug measurements?

I saw this at Walmart and couldn’t help myself back in the day. It’s one of the watches that got me into watches. The seconds hand is loud and shakes around when it ticks. Funny story: when I stepped it up and bought my first citizen I was like “uh, where’s the indiglow?” Lol
My new work watch. Great review as always Nick!
I just subscribed after watching 4 or 5 of your watch reviews in a row!
Turns out you also do blades and flashlights.Glad I subbed!
the shake of the seconds hand is due to the torque of the movement, it's not a fancy movement and it's a basic movement but in Timex fashion it's a very durable movement, that's built to last a long time and absorb some hits and bangs. So it is a little bit of a trade off if that is something that bothers you but, it's not a "cheap" movement as in low quality, it's just a basic movement with a higher torque for longevity.
The most thorough review of a Timex timepiece, ever. Great job, it was nice to see that Citizen again. If I see it one more time I'll be forced to buy one myself!
Loved the review almost 2 years after this video was posted and just ordered it off Amazon for 40 dollars.
Timex low battery indicator - when the second hand stops when you press the indiglo - its time for a battery.
Excellent review. Love your super ground breaking secret "lume lab"! Solid little watch. Just got mine in from Amazon!
Thanks again Nick for another awesome video. I recently purchased two Expeditions both had alignment issues. The second hand did not register properly with the indices for both watches so both went back to the sellers for refund. I finally satisfied my economical field watch urge with the CASIO MTP-S120L-3AVCF that has a much better reputation, quality control and build quality.
Just bought one of these to replace the Timex Marlin I have been wearing since my dad gave it to me, it's a 1974. Wanted something simple and cheap, this fills the bill perfectly.
Nick, I love your reviews. They're thorough, you go straight to the point and say it like it is.
I have a particular watch on my sight, the Alba APBT211.
I'd really value your opinion on it if you ever get the chance to review it.
Cheers
I'm into watches many times more expensive these days, but one of these got me through 2 years of military service without breaking a sweat. It's the roughest I've ever been on a watch, and the roughest I'll ever likely to be. Makes it kinda tough to justify my hobbies.
Hello, G-Shock mate
Your comment is really helpful
No kidding. People always joke that Seikos are either owned by people new to watches or serious collectors, and I could say that about Timex too. It's just nice to have a watch I don't have to worry about. My Tudor just came back from work at a Rolex service center and there was some loose metal inside the dial! So it's gone back again. You'd think some of the most prestigious watchmakers in the country would go good work 😒
I try to keep in mind that a quartz timepiece runs faster or slower depending on the temperature of the crystal. Some very high-end quartz watches have a sensor that actually monitors the temp of the crystal and adjusts accordingly.
Great review. My one should arrive tomorrow. I still can’t believe, they have been making quartz watches since 1969 and they still can’t align the second hand up with the sodding chapter ring.😲
Love this review. Guy is an absolute articulation Savant. Had me in tears when he rattled off the litany of shortcomings, yet nails the overall.
He is to watch reviews what my vintage gmt Rolex is to my wrist, which is to say... on top ~
I snapped the crown and spring bar off of mine stocking feed on a shelf. It fell from about chest height and fully disassembled itself upon impact. Case, case back, crystal, and movement all flew in different directions. I still love it though haha
Excellent review. I bought the Timex easy reader which is a nice watch too. Lots of people complain about the ticking, but I haven't noticed it with my timex🎉
just did a review on this... my second.... i really like this watch!
Got this instead of the Hamilton Khaki Field, since I couldn't afford it, lol.
Not a bad choice, there's nothing wrong with quartz watches, I personally like them more
How loud is it?
Leuff it’s pretty loud, you’ll hear it in a quiet room..
I had the Khaki Field and I didn't like it, ended up selling it. Particularly, I hated the following: huge crown, always digging into the back of my hand, Very reflective glass, in any conditions, I could never actually see the watch very clearly because of that, and poor lume - after a couple of hours in the dark, only the hour markers were still visible, but not the hands. Totally useless!
I'd say the Timex is a better watch from those points of view! :)
There's a solar citizen that's got a similar field watch look around 100 bucks, it's a nice halfway option between the timex and the Hamilton
I bought this watch approx. 25 years ago. I used it regularly and just changed the battery a few times. Never had any issues with it & it has always kept great time. I love Timex watches. 👍
I look at my wrist and smile, this 7 yr old watch outlasting 2 Sekios, my GShock that I bought after this for climbing rocks and because I use hammers and drills and such the solar charger stopped after 3 years. It also outlasted a Caravelle; I just bought a Armitron dress watch ( lets see how long that last ).
This Timex been in mud, water ( lakes, pools, showers but no oceans )snow high heat of Arizona cold of Maine, humidity of Florida. the only thing that went wrong is on me, I snagged the band on a lag bolt, it fell thirty feet hit a picket fence and landed face down in the grass.
For thirty five bux not bad considering the Sekios cost me 200 each, the G Shock 120, Caravelle 50 and the Armitron ( TBD ) 100.
As for noise in a quiet room it's silent at normal viewing distance, no noise on my metal book stand, work bench or glass table, once it's about 2 inches from my ear I can hear the tick, I wear the damn thing to bed if it ticked ( even on my night table arm lengths away I would throw it against the wall; but it doesn't.
Would I buy this again, hell yeah.
Just picked up the one with the darker case and a blue nato strap. Feels durable but not overly heavy and the indiglo is nice.
Thanks for the review Nick. I was almost sold on this, even though I don't wear wrist watches (I like fob/pocket watches). I was almost ready to buy one until you pointed out the lack of crown guard and the reports of breakage.
14 watches Inc Hamilton and SARB017 and this is one of my faves, 2 years on and indigo and battery still going, love that ticking noise. Great and honest review!!!
The color scheme with the OD Green is perfect for this type of watch
I've got multiple automatics and one quartz that I'd generally prefer to stay nice, so I needed a cheaper quartz to kick around. It's just nice sometimes to pick up a watch and go after a few days of not wearing it. Honestly, this thing rocks. Until my Tudor comes back from service I'm pretty sure this is gonna get a fair amount of wrist time
Indiglo has always been awesome. I have a Timex Weekender chronograph and I love that feature, although there is some sort of flaw on the face that causes a dark spot when the indiglo in in use. But for the price, I can't complain.
I've seen some people claiming that a particular spot in the dial is part of the Indiglo operation, but mine doesn't seem to have anything like that. Maybe they've done a hardware revision that fixes that?
In my case, the Indiglo stopped working a few weeks before the battery died. So maybe that can be one way of testing your battery. It started working again like normal with a new battery.
I luv the indiglo on my old Timex...and though there is no 'low battery' indicator...the batteries on these babies last near a decade! Timex also has some great classic designs for low end watches. Keep on tickin' Timex!
Great review Nick! You should check out the Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180-3E. It is very similar to the Timex Expedition Scout but gets some more things right such as a less cluttered face, 100m water resistance, more precise second hand movement, and of course the solar cell. I've had one for nearly a year and I love it.
Paolo Reffo I have the same watch and it is great! No battery. Costs a lot more. Nicer but 3x more dough.
I have got one,the Citizen Eco-drive since 2002 and is very very good.
You are good, I am impressed. Thank you!
I got all the details of this watch from just one video. Thanks mate
Thank you Nick for a first class review.
I have the exact same model. I keep buying the same watch whenever it needs replacement. They are not fancy, but they work for me. It does everything I want a watch to do. My last Expedition went through hell & back because it was on my wrist.
I took your advice, Do Not Get Into Watches. The Timex Expedition is my one & done watch.
i love the hand motions and voice. insta-subbed.
Had my timex expiditionfor 6 years now love it cost me £40 uk,never changed the battery yet.use this watch for for uk winter as it gets dark at 3.50pm,and for bed as I get up when it's still dark.great watch never need to readjust time serial number 905 w5.
This guy is neurotic. I thought I was the only person like him, but it's refreshing to see somebody as maniacal about the movement of watches. When he mentioned that the second hand vibrates each time it stops, I thought I was the only person that was that picky, especially for this price point.
Glen Daly its called being a connoisseur. its only when you compare and contrast that you are able to see the nuances that conform the detailed differences.
I hate when the second hand vibrates too or if it does no stop exactly lined in the second mark position. And it is not according to its price because I have military watches from Victorinox, Luminox, Casio, Seiko and Timex and all of them do the same shitty fact, f@ck!!!!!!!. We're three picky guys now then, hehe. Greetings from Argentina!
it's not being picky, neither having OCD, it's just asking quality
Not all of them do that. My Casios are all spot on, and so are my eco-drive Citizens, plus a quartz Orient.
One of the first things I noticed when I got mine! At this price point I'll chalk it up to "character"
I enjoyed my time watching this review.
Probably one of my favorite watches right now
Just bought this one yesterday as a beater at Walmart for $20. Not bad!
I bought this watch at a pawnshop a couple years back and love it compared to the other watches and pocket watches I own. I normally wear it when I work on stuff.
A faint indiglo would suggest a low battery. Still, you're correct that there's no direct or obvious signal. The extra numbers on the dial are distracting, and just unnecessary. The date is not only small, but is almost drowned out by the excessive numbers (especially since they're all the same color). As for the other imperfections, it's pretty unreasonable to expect anything else, given the low price. Nitpicking is inappropriate. Still, you've produced a fine review. Appreciated!
As for watches under 50 dollars one of the very best is Casio's World Time Illuminator. So many features and quite durable.
I own this watch and love it, that said I knocked the crown off my first one - great review!
I've got this watch, had it for a couple of years. Didn't really care for it, but it was great... until I managed to snap off the crown while hastily removing a backpack off my back. It still works, like the beater it is. I'm looking at other options for a replacement (Seiko, Bertucci, Momentum, Boldr), within a tight budget (and some extra features, such as crown at 4, or crown guards), but it's looking increasingly like I will just buy this exact same watch again....
That Timex sure look classy.
Im buying one after this commercial.
my next watch is gonna be a Timex weekender 100%
15:00 To say that this watch is loud is an understatement. One day while trying to fall asleep, I realized I could hear the watch from inside the drawer across my bedroom. After that, I had to cover it with t-shirts every night otherwise all I would be able to think about was the constant ticking.
I like that it doesn't have a crown guard so I can activate Indiglo with my wrist, keeping my other hand free. Not sure if it was designed for that purpose but it's a neat trick that wouldn't work if there was a crown guard. Sure, maybe the crown will break one day but if that happens, I'll just buy a new one at that price.
thanks for the recommendation nick
Cool thanks for sharing
Those dad puns at the end always get me hahaha
Thank you, Nick
I have the Timex Expedition Camper. Has a crown guard but a lot more plastic. Its just a few dollars less than the Scout. I also have a Smael. I really only ever wear them when I go play airsoft as they are cheap and I dont mind if they get shot up while I play. After 2 years there is only one small scratch on the Timex and both keep good time.
I just ordered online! Because my father used to have one in past I broked the glass! So I planned to give him a new one!
Good review and nice watch
Timex is proof that horology is evolving, Good on them. Thanks for the review Nick! Most of my pieces are a gazillion times more expensive than this little guy, but when I wear my Expedition (I have four of them), I feel free of the presumptuousness that comes with my Grand Seikos, Tudors, Omegas and Longines.
Bought one a few weeks ago. Nice watch for the price. Only complaint is i catch myself turning the indiglow on by mistake throughout the day when i bend my wrist back to work on things. No big deal, maybe just shorten battery life.
For anyone interested. Bought this one these watches ten days ago. Indiglo has already failed. Im waiting now to figure out if the battery is failing or the internals have failed.
Only wear the Timex Expedition, my first Timex lasted 10 years till I lost it, I really like the indiglo and clear numerals. quite accurate ,and rarely have to reset the time ,quite stylish too, why waste your money on an expensive show piece
I have this watch and love it. The date is a little hard to see though.
This was the beginning of my watch collection.....less then a week later a sale on aliexpress tempted me with a an addiedives my-h2..
I got a Timex Expedition Indiglo for my 11th birthday (womens version due to my small wrist). I recently found it while going through old boxes and threw a new battery in it. Surprisingly IT STILL WORKS!!!! I thought about giving it to one of my boys but I'm afraid they might lose it. 🤣
This really is a great looking watch for the price.
This size of Timex watch is my go-to. I'm not an enthusiast of any sort and I'm glad these aren't huge and I don't have to worry about damage.
Sadly my Indiglo hasn't worked on this thing for awhile. But I love this watch, bought it 3 years ago. Nice and legible military style, the strap has held up, and the accuracy is superb. The yellow second hand is a nice touch. The date field is too small and not enough contrast, but you forget that after a while. No regrets!
Pretty sure the indiglo quits working when the battery gets so low. Maybe try a new battery.
@@jamesfair9751 Battery lasts so long I just get a new watch when it's done. Indigo lasted a few months and I didn't use it much. Otherwise it's a solid watch.
I picked mine up in 97-98 before the dirty of my Daughter, it has gone threw 7-10 bands , been stomped into the ground by one of my horses and lost for 6 months! Then found washed off and back to work ! As I am now a retired pipe fitter welder, it has had the abuse of my career ! So the crystal is rather beat up ! The nickel plating is worn off on the edges exposing the brass body! With all this 🤔 I’m very proud to still wearing it to this day proudly!😎 Timex ! It does take a licking and keeps on ticking !😎
When I went to replace a 1999 Timex Expedition Indiglo that gave me nearly 2 decades of faithful service, I thought I found the perfect EDC watch with this model. However the crown accidentally got caught on something and tore off the watch. Bought a second one and the same thing happened.
Spent the extra cash and purchased the Citizen BM8180-03E and never looked back.
(Just my experience.)
Timex is my go to brand of choice.
I own this watch and really like it for what it is. When I was looking for a new watch that I could wear for working in the yard, going backpacking, etc., I found that plastic everything seemed to be the flavor of the day for under $40. Decided that I wanted something a little different. I knew about the crown issue, but so far it hasn't been a problem, despite some pretty rough use. I agree with many of your negative comments, but I still enjoy wearing it. I especially like the contrast on the face of this green version. Easy to quickly glance down and read it. Not bad for around $30.
Mine is exactly like yours but my seconds hand is also white. Slightly loud movement, not that loud, but overall it's a great bargain.
thanks Nick! very nice watch for a great price.
Very nice review.
I am a bit put off by that seconds needle that is imprecise, jumping ...
Do you have a review on the Aristo, Messerschmitt or Laco too?
Regards
On amazon, the description claims the casing is made of brass. I really hope that’s true because all of my watches wear on the edges and show that they’re made of copper, I don’t know if that’s a cheap watch thing or not.
Your accent is awesome!! From Ontario Canada
Those silly jokes... Gets me every time!
Don't ever change, Nick!
Tnx for the review
I rock a different model expedition and love it! Keep looking at higher end watches but realise I don't need it while this thing keeps tickin away
Should have mentioned, I lose 6 seconds a month with mine, and its been in the pool, the ocean, and doing dishes and has had no issues, although 100m would be ideal. Battery has been going since 2013, so I'm very happy with this watch.
Gotta agree on the lack of a low bat indicator though. Sorry to hear you got a lemon! Seems maybe I got myself a delicious apple by chance haha
i have some nice watches, but for stage work with lots of heavy moving objects, i got one of these. It gets the crap bashed out of it routinely, works and looks fine.
I know a few Mole People who I gifted this watch to and they love it. Never underestimate the power of Indiglo!
OMG, Nick can jump time, the watch read 17 minutes ahead after the LUM test. Always new Nick was special...
I need to stop buying watches. I've bought 3 Timexs in the past 3 months 😬
I'm about to buy this watch 😬😬😬😬😬 Bought my first watch 2 months again Bulova Lunar Pilot on a bracelet
