Australia's Worst Serial Killer

- In the lonely Belanglo forest south of Sydney, Australia, gruesome discoveries were made. Again, and again, and again. There was a man who was using the highways as a hunting ground, searching for backpackers who would disappear into the bush of Australia. The search would go on for years, leading to Australia's worst.

The thought his victims had their spines severed to keep them still while he played with them is beyond terrifying and in a forest where their screams would never be heard
The stuff of nightmares.
Absolute filth
As mick Taylor says in wolf creek a head on a stick 🙈
That’s what was beyond cruel
It's chilling 🥶 the though.
Thanks for the added nightmare.
Wow 😣 this case....
Paralyzing someone and then using them as target practice is one of the more disturbing things i've heard of from a true crime story.

Yep. That's Australia for you.
Paul Onions was rewarded 500,000 for giving enough evidence to arrest Ivan but he actually gave it back saying he did not want blood money! I’m so glad he survived and this monster was eventually caught!
He should have taken it, then donated it to community services for victims, IMO. That is where funds can be of best service to others in the future.
Money is simply a tool. How it is used is what makes a tool "good or bad".
Yes he should have pleged it of course
He did not give the money back......that's actually not legal, him and his girl friend made the story up to get the money. Follow the facts not what your stupidity and immaturity thinks you see
I would have kept the money. $500k would buy me a shit ton of weed
How do you know that?
There were two other young girls who had a very terrifying and narrow escape from Milat.
They were picked up hitchhiking and he drove them into the forest. Somehow they managed to make a run for it into the trees. They hid from him for litetally hours as he continued to drive around into the dark with his headlights on searching for them. Finally he drove away, but they stayed hidden for at least another hour or more. Eventually they walked back to the road and flagged down another vehicle, still terrified he could have driven back again. Absolute miracle they made it out alive.
Do u know the names of those 2 girls?
@@harisharis-sz5fh I don't recall their names. I read an account of their story and narrow escape, in the book on Ivan Milat called "The sins of the brother".
@@joanneginever1890oh okay, Thanks for the reply. 👍
It may humour you to know that Ivan’s dying demand was that his family refuse to pay for his funeral & the state pay. The state wouldn’t pay. The family wouldn’t pay. So Ivan got cremated, paid for from his prison account. Lol. Thanks for the great work Mike!
Holy sh!t what a hilarious twist 😆 🤣
It's nice to know he burns in hell and not buried on consecrated ground, thank you for the interesting info.

That story warms my heart. I hope they flushed his cremains down a toilet. He’s not really human.
@@marciabradley7660 the most frightening thing is that he *was* human. That some are capable of that.
"Trust your Instincts."
Paul is just one of the many survivors who dodged a bullet because they trusted their gut feeling. This advice is honestly a life saver and wish people would use it often.
I agree, the media today always tries to dumb people down by telling them not to judge anyone. The truth is you should always judge, the worst that can happen is that you might be wrong in your judgement but your life is intact. The PC Police isnt gonna come to your funeral to mourn your death
Gut feelings are as good as the info you feed yourself. BUT if a situation feels bad, better to be safe!
@@sew_gal7340 Years ago, before all the PC stuff, I lived in NYC and coming from a small town I was lucky to meet people who taught me important street smart rules. One was "If it does not look right it probably isn't"; "If you see someone or a group ahead coming towards you that look like trouble, casually cross the ave."; and "Don't bring attention to yourself." Truly saved my life I believe in a number of instances! You have to "profile" in situations like that.
Common sense lives in the gut
Stop victim blaming
The Milat family knew far more than they ever talked about, and were directly involved. I've lived around families similar to his and they don't believe in reporting the incredibly terrifying behaviour, you don't dob your family in. It amazes me that one of his brothers spoke out at all, he must've been completely alienated by the family.
Yeah I agree, some of the family members were involved and the rest knew something was going on.
Cool story…🤡
@@bradleymitchell3808 that's an intelligent comment.
I think one brother was innocent for sure. The mom, sister and one to two brothers were involved to some degree. They are a sick family!
Without any evidence to prove it, you shouldn’t jump to conclusions and conspiracies. The only “evidence” is that people say he couldn’t have done it all on his own, which just isn’t true, or backed up by facts. If there was any evidence, the brother would’ve been charged
When I was a teenager I watched this horror movie called Wolf Creek. A group of backpackers in Australia are hunted down by a man in the outback. It was terrifying because of how brutal and relentless the killer was. The movie disturbed me so much I did research on it and learned it was inspired by Ivan Milat. Horrifying to know that some of the things the characters in the movie went through were actually perpetrated by this monster.
I thought the same thing about this story.
It was not inspired only by Milat. It was a mixture with another killer. The Kimberly murderer up in the northern Australian outback. These 2 cases created Wolf Creek, amazing movies btw. 2 movies and also a series with two seasons.
Wolf Creek was an awesome movie.

I know this story well. I used to work at the crossroads hotel, that’s where he picked up his poor victims. When poor o’l Ivan got cancer and was dying they took him to palliative care and given drugs to keep him pain free. Everyone around where I grew up knew his family were involved. He couldn't have done some of those murders alone.
He worked for some time on road crews (the RTA in Australia) and wherever he was working up and down NSW, people went missing.
If you watch the Australian film clip of Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train", a number of the missing people are his victims.
He was given a toaster at one point when he was in prison and there was such an outcry that it was taken away.

His brother Boris he’s disgusted by him. They don’t speak to him at all because he knows that he committed these crimes and he goes out and gives interviews especially to 60 minutes Australia. I had nightmares for years. We went backpacking through Europe, Thailand and finished our year in Oz. My ex husband was there around the same time as Paul Onions. My ex thumbed all over Oz, worked lots of fruit farms and was very friendly. I am sure he would have been a victim. Hearing about Milat’s great nephew murdering someone, didn’t surprise me at all.

Mostly because our metro areas have good public transport systems and hitchhiking in country or remote areas is very hard to do for a number of reasons. It has nothing to do with people being scared of being murdered.

Only a true monster would be willing to go to their grave without giving other families closure knowing they have killed their loved ones. Ivan Milat is truly one of the worst people who ever walked this Earth. If only the police had listened to Paul who knows how different this case could of been.
Also - I always thought the tip given to police by Alex Milat was either to throw police off or it was actually given by Ivan using his brothers name. Alex could of possibly known about some of Ivan’s crimes and gave this tip knowing they would look into his family and it would lead to Ivan, he could of not wanted to directly implicate his brother out of fear or repercussion for himself from Ivan.

He will burn with uncle Ivan. If only they took notice of Paul Onions statement which was pivotal in nailing him. Blessings to the loved ones.

I grew up in Campbelltown of which Eaglevale (where Milat lived) is a suburb. My father was a local lawyer, so I knew far more than I ever wanted to know about Milat and his family's behaviours, as well as more than I could cope with as a child about those monsters that killed Anita Cobby.
Mike I can’t thank you enough for your videos! You are always spot on with the facts and the stories are so well told from beginning to end. The best of it all though is your personality and likability. I look forward to each and every video you put out. Master storyteller!
This is one that's very close to where I live currently.
There is absolutely no way that Ivan's family knew nothing of his crimes and that not one of them helped him either before, during or after his crimes.
100% mate, I’ve actually met some his family (briefly) and they are dodgy asf!

@Goochisz Magoochisz I agree with what you stated but one thing that just needs clearing up. Psychopathy and narcissism are *not* mutually exclusive. Many psychopaths are narcissists and they're usually the ones who turn to murder for their _fix_ .
His attack in 1979 was exceptionally brutal and even though one of the two victims survived with a slashed throat, he was allowed to walk free as a bird. Not sure why Mike glossed over that attack because it was the stuff of nightmares.
Mike also glossed over the details of who picked Onions up- a mother with five kids in the car. Brave woman.

My boyfriend’s Dad saw Ivan on the news and said “that’s the man who gave me a ride”. He was hitchhiking through NSW and got a ride with him, said he was nice enough but seemed a bit edgy. Although he is super friendly and isn’t the tallest or biggest guy, he has a booming voice so he can come across as quite confident and strong. I don’t know why he was allowed to live, maybe because he somewhat knew the area also and Ivan figured people would notice him missing, but I’m so thankful he was. Absolutely terrifying! 😔

I believe Ivan's brother who's the only family member to say he did it & Ivan was a great piece of 💩. Poor man lost his entire family for telling the truth.
The sister-in-law had a long affair with him & was more in love with Ivan than her own husband. You can't believe a word she says because she's been caught covering for him in the past.
And lastly, can we all take a moment to appreciate that mother who let Paul Onions in the vehicle even though her kids were with her. She didn't just save 1 person, how many more were saved because Paul was alive to testify & see Milat sent to prison for life.
Agreed, that mother is amazing! What a scary situation for her and her kids, what a woman!!
That mother is amazing for helping him like that. Most people could never do that, especially these day. It's far too dangerous since you have no way of knowing if it's a person in real trouble or if they're faking and trying to harm you.

How many times have the police given the old “okey doke” to a report to find out later they could’ve saved lives?
The scarier questions is how many of those okey dokeys are still out there, unnoticed.
Far, far to many times sadly

This monster changed my entire life before I was even born, I am a fan of the true crime genre in general but people really have no idea of the multigenerational trauma these people cause, their poor victims are just the start of the pain and heartbreak that carries on for decades. We always think of the what if's. I hope there is something next and he's being punished every second of his time there, and she's at peace.
You are so right, people don't realize how deep this shit goes.
Also, people were much less careful back then, because we weren’t aware what’s happening around the world or even ten cities away.

@@kouranko I know. It’s sad we need to be always on guard, looking behind shoulders. I enjoy walking at night alone, but being aware of all the atrocities in the world, I can’t anymore.

@@Venvaneless the world was a different place back then. Didn't really comment here about a beloved family member to be told she was stupid. We come from a place where people trust their neighbors and you can talk to everyone, she had no reason to not trust him.
Hello Mike, I just wanted to drop a line to tell you how much I love your stories and how you deliver them. Thanks for giving me the pleasure of listening to you.
It's insane that any of Matthew's family believes he's innocent seeing as there's a damn recording of him yelling at David Auchterlonie while he's murdering him. You can hear him doing it. And it fits exactly with the scenario Cohen gave. 60 Minutes Australia did a decent piece on the murder.
yeah they did. I only wish they'd leave the comments open on more of their vids. They do some great stuff! Like Andrew. :D
Some things are too confronting to be believed. Too damaging to the person. Or... the family refuses to be lumped in with a serial killer.
I would freak out if any of my family members were labelled a serial killer.
One other possibility is that the sociopaths of Ivan is shared by his close blood relations. I don’t know if sociopathy is caused by brain defects that are inheritable.
Apparently only one Milat brother is a decent person, and he says the entire family is crazy. He moved away a long time ago and does his best to live a normal life away from his crazy family.

As an Aussie (and BCrim) I've heard about this case my whole life and studied it in uni. These crimes hit harder than many other places because while we're a geographically large country, it never really feels that way to us (and even more so back in the 70s and 80s). Ivan Milat was one of the most heinous killers the country has seen.
Just as a friendly note, it's pronounced 'Mil-lat', not 'millet' (Or at least that's how we Aussies pronounce it).
I'm croatian and yes it's pronounced Mil-lat 🤗

@@strangetimez Glad to hear it! I wasn't sure even though it's how I always heard it pronounced because I grew up in a Russian-speaking household and I know how heavily distorted it gets by Aussie accents. I'm a big fan of this channel and have watched all his videos. I have to say, though, that as an Australian I'm a little disappointed at his description of us. We're not some barren place in the universe and these crimes were not committed in the boondocks. Belanglo State Forest is less than an hour and half from Sydney, so the commentary is misleading.

My estranged father had a 90 acre property that backed onto the Belangalow State Forest. My mother, sisters and I discussed whether he could have been the “Backpacker Murderer” for a hot minute. Ivan Milat was arrested quickly after but it remains a case that sends chills all over.
Paul Onions was pivotal in getting him arrested, the woman who stopped to pick him up was incredibly brave. When he was transferred to a newly built maximum security jail the police shut the town down to get him through without incident. It’s a case all Australians are horrified by and I am sure I can speak for us all when I say we are glad this monstrous man has now died. His victims will be respectfully remembered forever. The police who worked this case did an extraordinary job of gathering evidence that made sure Milat was removed from society. Jfc this family. Kudos to the brother who acknowledges Ivan is a serial killer. Nothing screams narcissistic psychopathy louder than the entire bunch insisting he had nothing to do with the the murders. With the 14 kids, and then the nephew also becoming a killer, I'd be curious to know what kind of shit went down in the family. My Mum was empaneled for jury selection on the Ivan Milat trial. There were many prospective jurors assembled that day. The Judge told them that during this trial they would be strongly confronted and that the trial was likely to run for a long time. He then told them that if they had any doubts whatsoever regarding their ability to participate they should say so and he would excuse and release them from their obligation. It is hard to fathom how a ‘person’ could be as cruel, brutal, depraved and unremorseful as the Milat creature. May his victims be blessed and rest peacefully. Small point, here Down Under the name is pronounced like “Mill Att’ rather than ‘Mill Ett’.
