The Case of the Gainesville Ripper

- As 1990 semester started at the University of Florida, something else had arrived in town. A man with a troubled past, who later inspired 'Scream', would, over the course of one weekend, go on a horrific spree. He brutally, and randomly, broke into people's houses in the middle of the night with a knife, and the stuff of nightmares followed.

What I don't understand is in most cases these men are abused by their fathers, you'd think they'd go around killing men but almost always their take their trauma out on women
They may feel that their mothers didn't protect them when they should have.
Their father's abused a weaker person who couldn't fight back.

@@pdbordelon Yeah at first I thought maybe he was giving a somewhat real apology until he f****** said, "But alas!... I'm not the keeper of time" & I was like oh no, hes a sociopath alright. That's how he can sing in court & ignore the judge after murdering so many people without the slightest tinge of remorse or guilt.
"Our children's names will be remembered over him". The pain of a father.
Apparently incorrect
Yeah unfortunately that statement is not true in real life. Virtually everyone's name will be lost to time, despite our attempts to build a lasting legacy through our children and our deeds. The only names that will be remembered are those who shaped the world for the better and indeed also for the worse. As a result we are more likely to remember villains than their victims.
He was actually the older brother of Manny Taboada, but yeah he really loved his brother .
The Judge, the Court, whatever you want to call them, should *NOT* punish (or even remove someone from the courtroom) anyone for yelling, screaming or expressing relief that the murderer of their child is going to jail. It's not like the dude leaped over 7 deputies and was smashing this dude's face in. This man was a monster. The Judge should've just sat there and let the man express his grief. The dude was already being escorted to a holding cell so the guy would've yelled for 20-30 seconds max.
@@jbzeigler it’s a courtroom, not a live show. i get what you’re saying, but there’s a standard of behavior/composure to be upheld in court. there’s a reason why there are times for victim impact statements. but who knows when someone’s emotions will get the better of them right?

He must not have bothered appealing. Bobby Joe Long was convicted with the death penalty in Florida in the early 80's and wasn't executed until like May of 2018 or 2019.
Sorry, mid-80's and 2019. But yeah. Oof
Due to the amount of people who are found to be innocent either during their death row time or too late, I actually think it's better that there's a delay.
@@lara_young I kinda fall in the middle. For instance, I watched a Texas Prison Documentary of a guy that was convicted and sentenced to death. He fought and fought and fought for I believe almost 8 years because he was innocent and a majority of the people thought he was innocent as well. His alibi was turned away due to a "race" thing in a good ole boy network...you get where I'm going with this.
He, his family, his attorney, his preacher, etc..took it all the way to the top of the top and it ended with him being put in the gas chamber. All that fighting for years and years just for his fight to end in less than a minute - they said he was gone in less than a minute but it took 12 minutes for total death by gas. Was he really innocent? I don't know, but he sure had alot of people genuinely backing him. Anyway, it was a great Documentary and really opened my eyes even wider about the Death Penalty.
You can look at a few cases and go "hey death pentalty 100% good", but then when you see how many people are falsely convicted I hope that will change your mind. Did shoving people in jail forever stop the drug trade? Expecting "justice" for a murder is fucking stupid, killing someone else, even the person who did it, will not get your loved ones back.
I wouldn't consider 16 years quick.
Your comment is a little conflicted. Are you really concerned about his suffering by being on death row? Or glad the Eye-for-an-Eye justice system was swift?
Born and raised here all my life and have never heard this story before....crazy, finally heard a story that hits home. Literally.
I love Mikes casual humor. He never disrespect the victims. But it’s open for everyone else. But you’ve got to have type of humor doing stories like these. I always enjoy your videos. And yes! if it wasn’t for FL there’d be no news! Lol

Edward Humphrey seemed like a troubled dude when he was younger, but he was marked with the stain of suspicion about this particular case, and that has to be hard to live with. I can tell you, as a kid who was living in the vicinity of this horror, I noticed that the adults around me were agreeing with the GPD and saying "try this kid; he's a weirdo." But they had the wrong guy.
are you sure it wasn't the father that was escorted from the courtroom that said it?
It's a rare serial killer that won't even hesitate to advance once he realizes there is another man in the house. Most of them see a man as a threat and will wait until their victim is alone. The fact that Danny had no fear at all to break into that apartment with a big, athletic dude in the other room just speaks to how absolutely vicious he must have been.
I know people react differently while scared but I wish she had ran outside at that point instead of in to the bathroom. Not faulting her actions for the record.
He must have been trying to feel big, the sick man.

What is interesting also is that the Scream mask really seems to have been inspired on him as his features with the super slanted eyebrows look a lot like the mask, It's like they made a caricature of his facial features
Although that is an actually pretty interesting and accurate insight about the mask actually looking like a caricature of him, I think it was obviously based on the painting The Scream and the even more horrifying artist’s rendering of the main figure in the painting. (although maybe the creator(s) of the movie chose that particular mask that was based on the painting subconsciously for that kind of similar reason too????????)
@@lovelyjanuary Yeah good questions, I don't know. I really just heard this in a video I think where they claimed this as fact, that the mask was inspired on this killer but what do we know really (the internet is not a relaible source) The painting makes so much sense I never considered that connection .. The thought I had is that maybe there's like a sinister connection between sadness, sad faces and some demonic forces because of the way these facial expressions can make people feel as for instance the famous story with the ' Crying Boy ' with the tear on his face where it is said never to have a copy of that painting on your house because many of these houses suffered spontaneous fires breaking out so it's bad luck, Maybe like the mask is bad luck too (because you're about to be murdered by sadness)
I wish the families of William, Julie, Sean, Sonya, Christina, Christa, Tracy, and Manny, peace and comfort.
Doubt it u don’t get over that ever
@Benny ThaMac’s Journey , I can empathize with the loss of a loved one at the hands of another. It's not something you can get over, but you can still wish them peace. Not that they are at peace with what happened, but that they find peace within themselves to carry on, to not become another victim of the person that stole their loved one. Beaten and abused all his youth. What "human feeling" are you talking about? I've seen people lay in blood and all these "humans" just go by ignoring it completely. Humans are scum.
So glad you covered this case, no one that I’ve seen ever really has. This was the first case that affected me growing up and I’ve read several books about it. Nice job, Mike 👍
Love listening to your channel Mike..,
Hope 2022 will be an awesome one for you and your family..

Thank you Mike! You're such sunshine even through tough stories.
Appreciate that Liz!
Yes🙏🏽
And this is why we love Mike!✌😸
The Gainsville Ripper Murders is one of the scariest stories ever told. Danny Rolling was an absolute monster. His crimes were both unimaginable and horrifying! I never understood why there was so little done on covering it. Well done, sir!
True...I've never even heard of these crimes...so horrific
He was probably connected and they ended up not being able to cover it up 🤔
It was a massive story when the murders first happened. The reason he hasn't become very well-known is because he was caught and sentenced so quickly and with little fanfare (aka no televised trial or crazy interviews with reporters). There have been so many serial killers in the US, the ones that tend to be remembered are the ones who took a long time to catch (or were never caught), or the ones who participated in their media circuses. Ted Bundy is the poster boy for fitting both of those criteria, and he's the person who tends to come to mind first when Americans think of serial killers.
Reason most likely being two letters: UF. They control that town and the optics.

After such a shitty day chilling out watching TC is calming, Happy New year Mike good luck.
I was kinda dreading watching this, knowing the horrors of what happened. Thanks for helping me get through it with your humor. Hope your holiday was a good one. 💜
I don’t understand how murderers are allowed relationships and even marry in prison. Who the F makes these rules?? RIP college people
Liberals......liberals make these rules. Communists who guise themselves as Democrats.
Didn't that happen to Richard ramirez, the night stalker? Didn't he marry someone when he was still alive? It's a shame that the gang of people who were attempting to Lynch him didn't get to finish the job because the cops showed up. What a waste of taxpayers money
Money usually plays a roll in that. Someone gets paid for those perks.
Mike, your comedy in this episode is 💯. Thanks for all the laughs. You spelling 'trouble' is excellent. 😄
I’m from the Gainesville area! I went to SF. It’s a super cool city, I absolutely loved living there, the food scene is amazing.
I was introduced to this case when I was at a friend’s house and the friend said “this is the complex where they found one of the bodies” then I heard the tale.
I really appreciated seeing all the vintage footage of GNV, thanks Mike and GO GATORS!
This is why we all subscribe to Mike, he said he'd be taking a break and still manages to post regularly. Thank you for giving it a goo !
Speak for yourself, I subbed for the good content not for post regularity.
He’s the best, right?
They could have been filmed in advance and we might see a proper break soon. He deserves it for sure. I don't know how his mind isn't totally demented from all of this murder!! I have to take breaks to stop the nightmares 🤣

During this, I was a 20-something brunette living in an apartment about a half mile from U of F. None of us felt any safer when they caught Ed Humphrey, and didn't really feel all that safe when the second guy was caught until it became clear it really was him. During this time is when I learned how to get good with a shotgun. Gainesville can be a beautiful place but I was certainly happy to leave it in 1992.
Yes, I carry. I’m a single mom and have to make sure I’m able to protect my kids and myself. Sorry you had to experience that.
Karyn Hill. Hello from Washington, D.C. My Heart and prayers go out to the Family and Friends of the Victims. I am very glad you are still with us and I hope you are fine. And remember that shotgun might just save your one day. God Bless and stay safe.
And some people think we don’t need any guns at all...🤦
How scary. God needed you here
@@davidfrehlini968 Hello from Falls Church! I no longer have the shotgun but I've been thinking about replacing it. This video is a reminder that I really should do that, and soon.
So I'm addicted to true crime, I've watched a lot that the RUclips algorithm suggested, until I came across you. You absolutely do the best job, with editing, dialogue, you make jokes at the right time, it's very well done. You deserve more subscribers man. Keep it up.
Between Investigation Discovery and RUclips. I’ve watched probably an embarrassing amount of true crime murder stories. Kudos to you Mike for always finding some new stories. I had never even heard of this one. Mike, I’ve formed a weekly habit now, you can never stop
I was a graduate student at the University of Florida in Gainesville when these murders happened. The university became a ghost town because so many students left town. It was eerie! We were greatly relieved when that demented Rolling was arrested!
BS
was right after Manny got killed, that's when it went insane. and we all knew it wasn't Ed, all of us.
I was in Ocala. Remember the groups of men took to the forest searching for him. Rollins was lucky the police found him, the mobs of angry North Floridians would have torn him to bits.
I was a student at UF when this all happened.. AND, I was living at the Regency Oaks apartments which backs up to the woods where he was living during the horrific acts. It was a surreal time. People were in a daze. Everyone was looking at each other wondering who the killer was. My folks finally convinced me to come home after a several days... Truly a chilling time.
I’m glad you went home. Better safe than dead.
How did he keep breaking in with a screwdriver? Did these college residences not have deadbolts because what an oversight
Love your humor Mike.🤣😂🤣😂 Thank you for your time and talent making these videos. Keep up the awesome work.
Gainesville is my hometown. I remember my grandma telling me how scared she was for my mom to be out of the house because they couldn't find the guy.
I went to the community College Santa fe couple years after this and everybody was still on edge!
Ahhhhhhhh.
I was going to mention I remember hearing about this case back in 90s.
Then I saw you heard of it from your grandma.
I’m getting old.

The brother of Christa (one of the victims), his wife would end up being murdered in Florida several years after his sister's murder. A man who was on vacation with his wife and children abducted her from a grocery store parking lot and killed her. Horrendous.
Florida!
What a fucken tragedy.
Wow! That is so sad.
Omg. How god awful that is. Too damned much horror and grief in one persons life.
Omg !
… I lived in Shreveport when the triple homicide occurred. I never knew the two were related.
Just wanted to say I love your Videos Mike. That Chapter is one of the things I watch the most on RUclips. Thank you so much for making them, keep up the good work.
Imagine being stuck on death row with this guy singing and reciting shitty poetry until you're execution.... Fate worse than death
Seriously. The other prisoners were probably petitioning the governor to get this guy to the front of the line
Comparatively, he was executed pretty fast. I am sure they begged to have him go first. Cruel and unusual punishment to listen to that assholery.
People who are on death row don’t get executed right away.
Seriously. I'd be asking my lawyers to drop my appeals. 🤢😂😂😂
Working even through the holidays... well done, sir. You’re appreciated.
Well said.
Thanks Mike!

Thank you, Mike, for all you do for this channel. Very Well made and informative. Looking forward to 2022 stories of these sick and twisted people. Happy New Year to you and your family Mike.
“Boo get off the stage” 😆 I love the way you tell these stories. Thank you Mike!
I can't imagine how horrific and traumatic it must have been for those who found the victims i hope they received the help they needed.
Most of them will eventually star in True Crime Soap Operas where they will endlessly Cry & Blubber about their loss, and their inability to EVER achieve "closure" just so that Soap Opera Queens like YOU will have something to occupy your otherwise Empty and Meaningless Life.

I lived in Ocala at this time and my husband was a student at UF. I remember this case vividly and when he was arrested. I also knew Christa Hoyt’s aunt. It was a very scary time. To this day there is a mural in Gainesville in memory of the victims. We will never forget them.

Not there yet but know What u Mean. Found him in the first lockdown n binged watch him. He is just awesome.
I thought it was someone in the courtroom lmao
I don't like the humor, I think it takes away from the story line and makes it seem not as serious as it is. I moved to Florida with my 2 youngest children about the time this was happening, and I think my nieces knew one of the young ladies that was murdered. I lived in a place not far from Gainesville. I now live in Texas.

Congrats on reaching 1.5 million subscribers Mike! Hope you reach 2 million in 2022!
I grew up just outside of Gainesville, and this was truly a frightening event; keeping many of us in a persistent state of anxiety. There is a large memorial on 34th dedicated to the victims. May they rest in peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️

I was just a kid when this happened, been in Gainesville my whole life. I can still remember how spooked everyone was when this happened. My mom was sleeping with a gun under her pillow.
Good for your mom. I M O every intelligent/responsible person should own and learn how to operate a firearm...and then keep it safe and, yet, handy for emergency use...too many psychos out there.
A good indicator of a channels overall quality, I think anyway, is if people have already seen/heard the story a fair few times in different formats, docs, T.V program etc etc ... But who will still ALWAYS KNOW that Mike here will deliver us something in a fresh and interesting way. And flawlessly balancing seriousness and respect with humor and a certain lightheartedness which never feels out of place. Bloody excellent channel. And I think Mike is one of the very best presenters on as well... Just saying.😎
You have endless material with all the stuff that goes down on FL, GA, TX, AZ and MI.
Mike's unique way of covering the most heinous of crimes, with such gentle respect for the victims , makes That Chapter the only crime show I watch. Thank you for all you do Mike, much appreciated
