- High in the Yosemite National Park, three women disappeared. A major search began though the wilds of the Sierra Nevada's, leading to a horrific discovery, and a taunting clue. Then it happened again, this time leading to the perpetrator. But it turned out the man behind it all, had a tragic history of his own.

When the father started saying he was supposed to die before his children but couldn't even get the whole phrase out, that really rips a person's heart out.
As a parent, I would never want to have to bury my kids. As parents, we are supposed to go before our kids.
That's the gut wrenching trick the news media uses...to make the public by their wretched newspapers. News around my neck of the woods...theres a pregnant squirrel up in one of my trees. The good enough news for me. Not moving outa these mountains.
😥
And on that note...... not watching it. Since I've had children; that kind of stuff wreck me. I can't even begin to imagine the pain. I wish that no parent ever would have to bury their child..... it's the absolute worst case in my opinion. I really don't know if I would survive. My heart might just quit. I don't know how to live without them anymore.
definitely hit me.
When Cary's brother Steven died 10 years after he escaped, one of his pallbearers was the boy he had rescued, Timmy White (now 14). White later became a Sheriff's Deputy . . . and died at age 35 of a pulmonary embolism. His parents outlived him and he left behind his wife and children.
This is a heartbreaking story all around. Both boys deserved to live long, happy lives.
Didn't know Mr. White died. May he and Steven rest in peace, and yes they both deserved to live long happy lives. So sad.
Damn. This needs to be higher. So tragic. This world is truly unjust.
Thank you. Now I remember reading that when it happened. There’s just so much tragedy to keep up with here. It’s like a dozen tragic spin-offs from Steven’s short life.
I’d forgotten that. There really was tragedy heaped on tragedy for everyone involved.
This is some very deep karma/ancestral curse being played out...
I know a guy who broke into a pharmacy at night when it was closed and stole some pills and he did 8 years in prison (3 more years than Kenneth Purcell for kidnapping those boys). Call me old fashioned, but I would think stealing children to be worse crime than stealing pills.
Agreed "the war on drugs" is a farce. People are going to explore altered senses of consciousness regardless of laws. As a country we should punish rapists, murderers and people that do harm to children to the absolute fullest extent of the law,no second chances no bullshit.
@Russ Olson You mean the Americans who make the laws? Bc I don't know any Americans who think that.
@Russ Olson Meh. Capitalism has it's merits. A lot of ppl are just ignorant of the facts in a lot of instances and politicians aren't really known for their integrity (capitalistic or not).

That father's heartbreaking line, "I'm supposed to die..." made me think of Theoden saying: "No parent should have to bury their child." Unbelievable tragedy.
This tore up my heart.
Yup so sad, you can tell he was thinking he was supposed to die first. True unselfish love there
Not gonna lie, I teared up.
yes, it squeezed a tear out of me for sure. burying your child must be worse than burying your parent
Yeah it's the most awfulest thing that can happen.
When you started going into his brother’s case I was like “holy shit is that the case I think it is”, and as soon as you said he died in a motorcycle accident I knew it was. I had no idea his brother then turned into a serial killer. That poor family.
And the uncle that tried to take care of them murdered in his home. That whole family was cursed.
It's likely Cary Stayner caused, in some way, that motorcycle crash, and murdered the uncle, too.*
* no suspect found ~ it was Cary

Such a sad situation. His brother was a hero gone through every worse of hell. Steven had every reason to set havoc in the world yet he was selfless and saved another boy while Cary was at home loved by his parents yet he came out to be an evil turd. May his brother rest in peace. Such a crazy story of two brothers and their fate.
He wasn’t loved by his parents.
@@alexandergorbunov6948 According to who? Cary? Oh yeah, HE'S a trustworthy source. There's no doubt that their dad made some serious mistakes. Those boys needed therapy, but back in those days, seeing a therapist held a huge stigma. I grew up in that situation. Never was allowed to seek help because boomers are obsessed with appearances and maintaining the status quo. But you can't say that he didn't love his sons. You can love someone yet still do wrong by them. That said though, do you know how many young boys go through something similar and DON'T become serial killers? This wasn't a nature vs nurture thing. Cary clearly had these urges from childhood, as early as 7.
Everything screams injustice. The serial pedophile gets 7 years, out in 5!!! The kidnapped man who got back his life dies at 24. The boogieman brother is still being paid for by us. Boy, that's justice, ain't it!
There was a third brother, “Cory”, who apparently did not do anything horrendous, or at least he doesn’t have his own Wikipedia entry! Presumably any problems Cary had growing up in those circumstances, Cory had too.
He was pulling out his own hair as a kid. That’s a serious mental issue. I’d say there was some sort of emotional trauma over the kidnapping of his brother that wasn’t properly dealt with. People didn’t know any better back then though
Nothing is worse than seeing someone’s father break down in tears. It’s extremely heartbreaking

One small detail, Cary, was 4 years older than Stephan, his cousins said Cary was creepy and weird as child, well before Stephan was kidnapped. He'd sneak around and watch the girls in the family undress and say creepy things. His Mom and Dad made excuses, boy's will be boys, he was just curious etc. When he was older he was caught, peeping into windows around town.
Wow, I figured he had stuff like that in his past, even though I never heard it said. It makes no sense that a man in his late 30s would suddenly kill in this way without the warning signs you mentioned. So sad that he used his brother's traumatic experience as an excuse for his evil actions.
He was a psychopath
Cary and Stephen were sexually abused by their father. As were their sisters. The family was known for being responsible for generations of child abuse. It’s no wonder Cary became a killer.

It’s wild how this is one of the most frequent compliments, yet also one of the #1 complaints & criticisms I see people give him here. I say it’s a great trait & makes That Chapter stand out amongst all the others who cover this stuff
What a tragic family story. The made for TV movie, "I know my first name is Steven" is a tearjerker. It doesn't seem fathomable that two horrific incidents can happen in one family.
Omg, I remember so clearly when this happened! I was in Middle School and my Mom & I visited Yosemite two weeks before the first three women were kidnapped. I remember it really shook my Mom up because she was a single parent and fiercely independent. We lived in Washington State but would go on road trips all the time. Being a big fan of the outdoors, we would often stay at State or National Parks, usually in the lodges because they were cheaper and family friendly. After this happened, we would only travel with other families or friends. Thank you for covering this story. I knew they found the killer, but I didn’t know who his family was or that he had other victims. Super scary!
Mike, I don't know how often you hear this, but it's not often enough: your sound editing is superb. I mean damn, man! Love ya.
Compare his first vids to his recent ones and he has went from amateur to Top Shelf Professional! Mike is the absolute best! 🥇🏆🏅🏆🎖️
Yes yes and Yessss...
I've grown to love you Mike. You're so goofy. Love this channel.
Much love Fam!
Like some other commenters, I started off thinking Mike was too sarcastic & a bit of a smart-arse, but then I kept returning to watch his videos because he really is excellent - the editing, relevant interviews, photos, sound, captions at times, music, research - yes, he’s really that damned good! Then I found myself laughing at some of his jokes, & I watched some of his earlier videos & saw that he really does have a heart, so I came to really appreciate him. He is very, very good at this! He doesn’t mouth misplaced sympathy for the really repulsive murderers either, like some other channels do. Well done, Mike!
I feel sooo bad for the father in the first case crying about losing his wife and kid. That's so terrible 😥
Was heartbreaking 😥
@@kiiingst0n you could feel the absolute pain in his voice 😢
Lost everything dear to him, at that age. 💔
I'm pretty sure it was the other girls dad, but still.
If you're talking about the white-haired guy, that was the father of Carole, the mom who was killed. He lost his daughter and granddaughter. When he said, "I'm supposed to die", he likely meant "first" as in before them. Still heartbreaking. I can't imagine what going through something like that would be like.
The Jaws clip was literally ingenious.
Ted Bundy kept one drawing on his cell wall of a shark drawn by his step daughter. This killer reminds me a little of Bundy.
"don't be the mayor in jaws man.. do not be the mayor in jaws... hey u are being the mayor in jaws....don't call me the mayor in jaws!!"
The father breaking down like that really got me. You can see his pain. Breaks my heart for him.
Omg that precious dad. I lost my dad in March and this gentleman reminds me of him. Not looks but the love he shows. There’s something special about dads. My prayers are most certainly with all those facing circumstances such as this. ✌️❤️☺️
I'm truly happy you had a good dad. Unfortunately mine is a POS, so not all dads are good, but my heart really aches to have had a loving relationship with my father and have had a man as compassionate as that guy. I became homeless as a teen through absolutely no fault of my own. I had always seen my dad, every week of my life, but I was going through somethings and didn't see him for about a year. That shouldn't have made any difference to a mature person. When I told him what had happened to me, he told me to stop calling and bothering him and my grandmother, his mom, even though I had only called once. He hung up, essentially leaving me to die. Thankfully I got out of it, though my PTSD is through the roof still, though I'm nearly 40 now. I could have killed or sexually assaulted and he just... didn't want to deal with it. Typing this was painful enough.
This story is one of the scariest stories I’ve ever heard. It’s really a multi layered situation. Ugh 😩- sooo bizarre !
So twisted ..And Mike is a great speaker./.Narrator🙂
That family was cursed.
@Sandra Turajlich I’m 3,000 miles away & the story has always given me the creeps. Can’t imagine living that close.

The movie made about Steven Stayner “I know my first name is Steven” was just so heartbreaking 💔
Yes! I remember watching this on TV as a kid..
that mugshot, even without the murders he looks like a serial killer.
Resting Guilty Face.
Such a smug look on his face on that most recent one. Makes me sick.
Looks to me like psychological profiling is now slightly more preferable to physiognomy.
His eyes look so evil.
I totally agree. He scares the bejeesus out of me. 🤤
It was quiet time at Yosemite for our family back in the 50s and 60s all year round. Idyllic and sparsely populated back in those halcyon years. This crime really shook me! Thanks for covering it Mike.
Yes. Yosemite in the 70’s was pristine and really still undiscovered. I camped there many many times (I lived in Sacramento). You just simply drove there. No reservations ever needed. You just drove up there for a few days and there was room for everyone. Great times. One of the most breathtaking spots in our country. And I’ve been to all 50. Just sayin’.
Everything screams injustice. The serial pedophile gets 7 years, out in 5!!! The kidnapped man who got back his life dies at 24. The boogieman brother is still being paid for by us. Boy, that's justice, ain't it!
I grew up going to the little valley with my folks as our vacations every year in the early 80s, back when it was the little backpacking supply store, ice cream store, the lodge and nothing else. Still remember the big bonfires in that huge fire pit in front of the lodge. Backpacked all through that park, and even did the massive high sierra camp loop once. That was an amazing trip.
Remember Stacey Aaras.
@@halfseamusracing9073 Nice.
This happened in my back yard. It is a haunting case. As a mother, what Carol had to endure, knowing the girls were next, brings me to tears every time I think about it.
Never, ever open your hotel room door to "maintenance", unless you requested it.
My deepest condolences to the families. All these years later and it still breaks my heart.
yup they just have to wait till the room has been vacated.
I was a student at garden gate elementary school which had yearly trips to yosemite. Joie was our camp guide. She was absolutely fantastic, and I'm not just saying this out of respect for the dead. She really was a truly wonderful person, beautiful inside and out. It did not surprise me at all that she fought. RIP
Mike: “They flew because that’s an 8 hour drive! F that!”
Every Midwesterner (myself included) watching; “WHAT?! Why would you fly?!!! That’s nothing!”
Or any Australian lol
Right 8! Hours! An nothing!😂😭 pretty standard here!😂
😂 my exact thoughts, i’ll drive 8 hours in my sleep
Geez, me and some friends went to Los Angeles for breakfast; from Las Vegas. When living in the Mojave desert, it takes 8 hours to get to anything nearing civilization!✌🏻🐱
Yeah anytime we visit our fam on the east coast, it’s a 16.5hr drive, IF the weather is good lol
Side note: while watching the Netflix special on the Cecil hotel, I saw Mike! You are a star.
Yea! Haha! Me too! It was like seeing a mate on the telly! 😀
Remember this story back in 1999, made national news , I thought 3 women alone and then about 1month later ,they found the nature girl who took you on hikes and explore trails hit the news and just a horrific turn of events followed ( they got the wrong guy, or were still looking since this murder was has horrific as the 3 other woman who died previously) I thought women alone in Yosemite not a good idea , you really need a husband boyfriend to accompany you in such a remote area. You have monsters everywhere they exist everywhere had really good parents who always told me as a child be aware always who’s around you. Such tragedy for all the families involved, was on the news for quite some time , the 2girls with mom were so vulnerable and pretty so innocent and so young , the father of one of the girls , he breaking down touched the country because everyone felt the same way, so violent that the killer felt compelled to behead the young girl , living alone (or waiting for her boyfriend , forgot , do believe she had a boyfriend out of town but coming back) so long ago and remembering it conjures up all the tragedy and heartbreak these families went thru , just horrible , the country was wanting for good news , that they would be found, innocence lost in such a beautiful part of the USA what ugliness could possibly happen there at the park , RIP these 3 beautiful young girls and their mother of the 2girls how sad to think there are monsters even in beautiful Yosemite park. My condolences to all families involved. Hopefully justice will be served someday. Guess death row takes time, which is what he took from these victims.

This story gives new meaning to "family tragedy"...
I remember the story about Steven. It was heartbreaking. He was a hero and a beautiful soul.
All of this in one family? 5 year old kidnapped for 7 years, dies at 24, Uncle murdered, and brother murders 4 women, after fantasizing about murder from the age of 7. Very hard to wrap your brain around.
@john wood I have questions about the brother that was kidnapped. He never suspected the kidnapper was lying until after 7 years? Even at a young age i would have known that man was lying and tried to escape first chance i got. Very odd family.
Thanks for spoiling the whole video

I can't believe that the man who abducted Steven only got 7 years. Wtf.

Back then, in the 70's and before, this shit was common. People who literally raped and murdered children were let out after a few years because they had "changed". It was unreal.
He did 5 years only
Apparently they were dropped because the instances of abuse were either outside of the jurisdiction of the county prosecutor or were outside the statute of limitations (god bless the 1970s) on a side note I love how complicated a criminal can make a trial by crossing an invisible line, then again, this was the reason the FBI was created.
UNBELIEVABLE. I wonder why he didn’t get the shit beat out of him repeatedly in prison from other inmates ⁉️
This is one of the most tragic cases, for so many reasons. Skilled coverage, Mike.
His phrase “Bits and Bob’s” never get old…🤣🤣
As a Midwestern-er, Mike’s reaction to an 8-hour drive makes me laugh 😂

I remember watching, “I know my name is Steven,” as a teen, I believe, and it always stuck with me, so I knew I was saving this one for last. Mind blowing the level of tragedy that family experienced.
After finishing this story I went and google more about Yosemite and the first thing that came up was a family that recently died there. I’ve never been but that park is giving me the creeps.
Yes - but it is also stunningly beautiful...
Wait to watch MISSING 411 with David Paulides …. Get back to me then lol!
The park is 1200 sq miles. It's huge. So, things happen there. It's all wilderness, and breathtakingly beautiful.

What was really sad was Steven wasn't far from his grandfather's house while he was held captive.
