R&B all the way, but every once in a while Lionel's Alabama roots come through with a little tinge of country storytelling. Fantastic talent no matter how you look at it for sure!
One of the more interesting aspects of this song is when the hook comes in. It appears at the end of the song! It just brings the song to a whole other level. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one waiting for your reaction when it kicks in!
@Danny, yes totally threw me off when first heard it back then. Surprised too it was them. But loved the whole song, it was another Lionel masterpiece.
Growing up in the 70’s, the Commodores were a part of everyone’s top ten! Funny how top 40 were many different genres of music then! Loved that! You could turn on the radio and hear Zeppelin then Chaco Khan then Allman Bros then the Stylistics! Crazy but sooo good!!😁
Lionel Ritchie. One of the last "Old Skool" love song composers left in our midst. I'm sure he composed all the Commodores songs while with them and then wrote more for his solo career. He also wrote many for other singers including "Lady" for Kenny Rogers and "We are the World" with Michael Jackson. So many hit songs. I was lucky enough to see Lionel in concert in New Zealand back in the 90's and he just did not disappoint. Awesome reaction Asia and BJ ❤️
What a great group with an amazing catalogue. So many good ones you could explore- Brick House, Easy, Nightshift (fantastic), Three Times A Lady, etc. Not to mention all the great solo stuff from Lionel Richie!
The message I always got from this song was that he was trying hard to be with his woman, please her, love her, and give her what she wanted. When she didn't reciprocate the feelings or the emotions, he finally decided that he'd had enough and was ready to move on (sail on) and try to enjoy his life while she lived her own miserable, negative one . . . without him.
Lionel Richie is country! He's from Tuskegee, AL. In 2013 he released an album with all country artists singing his music with a more country tone to them. It's such a great album! Some of the songs are with Lionel and some on their own. Sail On was recorded with Tim McGraw! There was a big concert when the album came out showcasing all of the music. The performances are all on RUclips! My favorite performance was of Lionel singing 'Lady' with Kenny Rogers! Lionel wrote that song for Kenny back in the day. It was my first dance with my husband at our wedding. We just had our 30th anniversary in April!
This is one My All-time Favorite songs. Incredible! Has a Lot of meaning... give Your Heart, Time, money and just ... get Used. Heartbeat.. Sad. Commodores are one thee best Best groups and Lionel on His own was Great.
Yes! I just adore this song! Such a mood it sets. When he says I know it’s a shame but I’m giving you back you’re name..sad way to say divorce but so clever. Since you liked this I think you’ll really like ‘You Are’ a solo Lionel song. ❤️
A true artist, we all hear a different meaning. To me, "I gave you all of my time and money, Aint it a shame, I'm giving you back your name." Sounds like he was feeling like the fool who was played, and finally realizes it so he broke up with her and is reclaiming his dignity. "A small town boy like me just wasn't your cup of tea, I was wishful thinking." to me enhances that verse. A small town boy got played by a big city gal.
He wasn't getting a divorce just to find a good time. He finally wanted to be free after realizing he wasn't her "cup of tea" and everybody telling him she wasn't the one. So, particularly at the end, this song is a celebration of being out of something bad and starting life over. Hear that 3 part harmony at 2:40 (on the "It was"), btw? That's very country/bluegrass, as was the "wishful thankin" and other pronunciations.
That's one of the most romantic lyricist and singer Lionel Richie, just love him, and all his tunes are iconic! As you can see, he was really great with The Commodores. Thanks Asia and BJ.
The Commodores are basically an R&B band who had a string of memorable hits in the seventies and eighties. The group was led mostly by Lionel Richie who you can currently see as a judge on "American Idol". Lionel delved into several genres of music including country so it's no mistake that the song has a country feel to it. In fact, he wrote the song "Lady" for country singer Kenny Rogers.
Unlike today's music, artists like Lionel Ritchie & the Commodores were just that "ARTISTS." They created, from the heart, they feel what they were playing, they make us feel. They play their own instruments and write their own songs, unlike today's singers, who mostly have their songs written for them to sing, and do not play instruments. It's manufactured by a label for profit. The Commodores, and The Rolling Stones, and the rest of the innovators, to this day do not care about the money, They all started out as a cover band wanting to be like their idols, they went on and created their own style, and original songs. Today's music is just that a style, just like fashion, it's in today, and out tomorrow. Yesterday's music never get old and keeps making us feel because it is genuine from the heart. It is inspired.
They were multi-instrumentalist as well. Richie sang lead & background, played sax, piano, and synthesizers. William King played trumpet & guitar. Milan Williams played keyboards and guitar. Walter Orange played drums sang lead & background. All six of the sang harmony. The same is true of many BANDS of that era even those who did not achieve the same level of success.
Got to see the Commodores three times in the 70s, every concert was better than the previous one. It was the first time that I’ve ever been to a concert with nobody sat down, it was just too good to sit down
Southern RnB. Lionel has a couple country, or country sounding, songs. Deep River Woman with Alabama is amazing. He pretty much wrote it as a country song, and with Alabama's harmonies its just perfect.
I love “out of the box phrasing” in this song. The song is so wonderfully smooth but the phrasing takes it next level ala Strawberry Fields. Great reaction/great song
You can really hear the Alabama in his voice on this one. These songs were standard at our school dances and parties. If you didn’t get lucky or at least snuggle up close to a girl it certainly wasn’t Lionel Ritchie’s fault. In 1980 got to hang out backstage with the Commodores before a concert in my town.
I'm a bit surprised you hadn't checked out Lionel when he was with the Commodores. This is an AWESOME song. So is the song ZOOM. I have both of them on my workout music. Never get tired. ZOOM is killer. This is Lionel in his early years that reflected his Southern roots... which is why later Lionel was able to mix with Kenny Rogers so well.
Zoom is my favorite Commodores song. It's the type of song you listen to on a weekend drive or when you're just relaxing at home on a Saturday evening.
Wife here..My Mom Loooved this song.!.As a small child I remember her putting on the 45.." record"..Honestly brings a tear to my eye!!..Thank you so much..Beautiful piano and voice!! YESSSS!!
Lionel was a great great singer back in the day. So many great memories from his romantic songs. He and the Commodores were very popular and his records were heard everywhere you went.
Lionel was from Tuskegee in the Black Belt so he had that Country Twang no doubt. But he was R&B no doubt, as a matter of fact The Commodores were really a Funk Band but Lionel's had so many hits they kind of starting morphing into more of an R&B band.
Asia and BJ, I'm not sure if you'll see this but my wife and I have a special connection to the Commodores. She's from Tuskegee and we met in college in the 60's. It was nothing to see The Commodores on the yard or in the cafeteria. They were the house band at the Elks club on Friday nights. My wife grew up with Lionel and Ronald LaPread. We got married on campus and lived in Tuskegee for awhile and I got a chance to get to know them. It was truly a great time. And it was nice to see them become so successful. We even got to see them in concert a few times. And got to go backstage and hang out with them. I really enjoy your reactions. Thanks for the joy you bring❤
Lionel Ritchie is an absolute master! I remember back in the day feeling strange on the dance floor. The music is a perfect slow dance number, but the lyrics are ridiculously awkward to slow dance to! lol - I hope you two react to a lot more of Lionel and the Commodores! :)
The Commodores most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. The band's biggest hit singles are "Easy", "Three Times A Lady", "Sweet Love", "Just To Be Close To You", "Still", "Oh No", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Sail On", "Nightshift", "Brick House", "Fancy Dancer", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Too Hot ta Trot" etc. Lionel Ritchie went on to have a big solo career.
Love The Commodors! Memories of Sadie Hawkins dances spring to mind where 7th grade boys stared out across the dance floor at 7th grade girls while trying to gather courage! Oh, they feature on the sound track for one of the better 80's teen angst movies that wasn't as popular as others back in the day. The movie is called, "The Last American Virgin" and it's absolutely heartbreaking. The entire movie comes down to the very last two minutes and literally tears into your soul. The soundtrack is awesome too!
I never noticed until years later when Lionel re did some songs and he did them more country sounding. I'm just gonna say it. I can't believe you never heard these songs at the family reunion or something. Try Lady ( You Bring Me Up When I'm Down) and Zoom ✌️
Saw them in concert back in the late 70s.The Commodores played after a band called Parliament. If you are not familiar with Parliament they can rock the house.
the commodores have so many great songs, including this one. 3 times a lady, nightshift, brick house, easy, just to be close to you, still, etc. etc. They have so much to pull from. Thanks for your reactions!
Love your watchful reaction...as the song sail on there appears to be a calming effect going on!!... it is a beautiful song... Lionel Ritchie is such a a talented musician and the Commodores were a hit making machine.
My favorite Commodores/Lionel Richie song. Richie is from the south, so I relate to that, and you can hear the country in his voice, but it's still R&B. Love it, and can relate on the breakup aspect too. Time to "sail on" when it's over.
16, working the shoestring fry stand, directly beside the grandstand at the Ohio State Fair. 1979, these guys came and blew the roof off! The rest of the year this was my ‘park by the river at Como park with my girl and work on those night moves’ song! 😂. Ah yeah. It was good to be a teenager in 79 and The Commodores were there making it great. Love you guys. 🫡❤️👍🏼✌🏼
They have so many hits!! 🎶They are R&B, and so loved by so many!!💜 Lionel Ritchie's voice is hard to ever mistake for any one elses🎵🎶 "Brickhouse" is one of their biggest hits, so please listen to it!!🎶 Also a slower one that is a little gut wrenching is "Still"🎵🎶
The great Lionel Richie and the Commodores. I wore put their greatest hits album and his first two solo albums. Great music, great era and most importantly great musicians. An attribute that is in such big need in today's pop music.
Oh, My! How I Love the Commodores! Lionel Ritchie is one of the greatest, ever! My two favorites were 3 times a Lady, and Brickhouse! You Must listen to them!!!🥰🥰🥰
You have reacted to many great songs from the 60s , 70s and 80s , I hope you can see how special those years were for those that grew up during that time period . It seemed like hit after hit came out during that time . This is another prime example of how great those years were . Thank you, another group Rolls Royces , car wash
The Commodores and later Lionel Richie solo; were very good at making what I call AM classics.. These were songs that you would listen to on AM radio while on long drives. I am not even sure if AM radio still exists. However, songs by Anita Baker, Temptations, Climaxx and hundreds of other artists from the 70's thru the early 90's used to make all of these mello R&B AM radio classics..
I remember when this song came out. We were listening to it at work, and one of my friends just said, "The Commodores have done it again." This one always makes me want to cry - been there too many times myself. Now I'm old enough, I'm just done and fine with being on my own.
Commodores were R&B...but Lionel Richie can write ANYTHING...R&B...country...pop. One of the all time great lyricist. "Just To Be Close To You"..."Still"..."Sweet Love". Too many hits to name. Definitely check out more of their music. You won't be disappointed.
It is so funny because as a teen, I had no idea really what the song was about. I just loved The Commodores and Lionel Richie and it was such a nice soothing tune. But you're right Asia! Beautiful song, but a messed up song too! LOL I love toward the end where we get the "BJ head swaying and bobbing" - the sign that BJ really is feeling the song!
Good song. "Easy" "Three Times A Lady" "Just To Be Close To You" Brick House" "Nightshift" and others were good hits. Lionel really made this band so cool.
I'm mostly a 70's and 80's rock and metal fan but those 70's pop hit's are just great songs like the Commodores and Earth Wind and Fire just to name a few.
Lionel could certainly write the breakup songs like nobody else. Also during his Commodores days he did "Oh No" and "Still" that evoke that same heartbreak without whining, which isn't easy to do. Thanks y'all for another great reaction.
They were from Tuskegee, AL. Might be why you hear a lil country in the song. I think Lionel liked country. He wrote one of Kenny Rogers greatest hits, Lady.
Love the Commodores and how much they meant to me and my younger years growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles ca. Great memories and how they were the music backdrop to all those experiences. "Zoom" was my song back then boy did I have some fun while that song was on lol (we wont go into what I may have been doing lol). Thanks for memories guys As Always stay safe and much Lovez1
Country flavor? You have a good ear. Lionel Richie wrote that song. He grew up in Alabama in the 1960s, deeply immersed in C&W and gospel, which was very popular when he was young. In 2012 Richie put out an album of his many hits all done with a country flavor. He had all kinds of guest singers, all of them country artists. It might be the best country album I've heard - definitely up there with Stardust by Willie Nelson.
I grew up on late 70s & 80s rock (Queen, Zep, Foreigner, Scorpions, Hagar, Def Leppard, Van Halen, etc), and just totally dig this song and always have.
An Australian band you should check out is THE LITTLE RIVER BAND. Recommend: 1. HELP IS ON THE WAY (1977 live), 2. LONESOME LOSER (1979 live), & 3. TAKE IT EASY ON ME (live). Great live band!
Lionel Richie, started with Commadors, composed must of thier music, before he went out on his own...Writing song for Kenny Roger, like Lady. Such a talent...
My favorite by the Commodores and really by Lionel Richie. The beginning part is wistful and regretful and then when it kicks in it's like liberation. Such a personal piece of gold.
This version of the song was cut off. The last part of the song rides out on music and ad libs. It adds to the ambiance and meaning of the song. If you get a chance, find the album version of this song and check it out.
Tim Mcgraw was joined on stage by Lionel Ritchie, and they connected well with this hit song I grew up with. Your totally right it has country written all over it.
"Night shift" is a Lionel Ritchieless Commodore song, but it's great . It's an ode to Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, who both passed away the year prior. And "Still" people forget about that one.
With all the hit songs Lionel Ritchie released either with the Commodores, solo or in other collaborations... this one still always stood out of the crowd for me.
Your comment was accurate- it was an r & b group doing their version of a country song. But more importantly, It was The Commodores. Just good music, call it whatever you want.
Loved loved loved The Commodores my big sister turned me onto them and then Lionel Richie was always played on the radio. Good 1st reaction you should listen to more. ❤️
Thus was another great reaction i really enjoyed it, sweet love, nightshift, easy, brick house, and three times the lady are a few more of the great song by the commodores.
"I know it's a shame, but I'm givin' you back your name". One of the greatest lines in a love song. The most optimistic divorce song ever, although it's just a little bittersweet. As the saying goes, the best revenge is living well. Lionel is America's greatest writer of love songs in the R&B/R&R era.
Great songs from the Commodores! Then Lionel Ritchie had a great solo career as well - always great ballads.. You probably know he's a judge on "American Idol" for a while now.
When this group was altogether they were a force to be reckoned with one of my top five shows of all time. Tipping guys from the bad would get up and play different instruments in there be more than one singer it was a great two hours of music
Check out Boogie Nights, The Groove Line, and Always And Forever by Heatwave, and Give It Up by K.C. and The Sunshine Band. Easy by The Commodores is a great song.
Asia & BJ, Their "Three Times A Lady", "Brick House" and "Easy" are next for you!!!
Yesssss!!
Don't forget Zoom!!!
You have to add Still, Zoom, Sweet Love, Just To Be Close To You & Jesus is Love to that list
Why do ppl always leave out their timeless classic “Oh No”?
Theres a reason it was on one of the best soundtrscks of all time…
The Commodores are definitely an R&B group and Lionel Richie is a legendary singer and songwriter.
R&B all the way, but every once in a while Lionel's Alabama roots come through with a little tinge of country storytelling. Fantastic talent no matter how you look at it for sure!
RICHIE HAD THAT COUNTRY FLARE
Country and honkytonk evolved out of R&B.
One of the more interesting aspects of this song is when the hook comes in.
It appears at the end of the song! It just brings the song to a whole other level.
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one waiting for your reaction when it kicks in!
That iss what made me think this is about the the man not the woman, Good Times never felt so right, Sail on honey, and he threw away the blues.
@Danny, yes totally threw me off when first heard it back then. Surprised too it was them. But loved the whole song, it was another Lionel masterpiece.
@@grabzndealz8213 no good times now...
This was about Lionel Richey and his first wife. He was going through his divorce.

Lionel Richie is one of the greats, with and without the Commodores… Remember “Lady” he wrote for Kenny Rogers… So talented it’s insane!
What a great group with an amazing catalogue. So many good ones you could explore- Brick House, Easy, Nightshift (fantastic), Three Times A Lady, etc. Not to mention all the great solo stuff from Lionel Richie!
Don’t forget to react to zoom by the commodores
Didn't the Commodores sing "Lady...You bring me up when I'm down?"
Lionel Richie also wrote Lady (different song) for Kenny Rogers.
The message I always got from this song was that he was trying hard to be with his woman, please her, love her, and give her what she wanted. When she didn't reciprocate the feelings or the emotions, he finally decided that he'd had enough and was ready to move on (sail on) and try to enjoy his life while she lived her own miserable, negative one . . . without him.
wasn't he notorious for cheating...and with many?
@@christopherone1 And?
Thank you it seems not too many people realize it is a breakup song from the guy point of view
I resonate with your statement perfectly!
Perfect description about how I feel about this song, and what it means to me.
He wrote this song for his friend watching what he was going through.. he even presented it to his friend before recording it
Ole' Lionel pumped the tunes out one after another in the 80's. He was a/the ballad king.
Lionel Richie is country! He's from Tuskegee, AL. In 2013 he released an album with all country artists singing his music with a more country tone to them. It's such a great album! I'm with ya Brenda, loved this song for so long, the words say it all
He wasn't getting a divorce just to find a good time.
The Commodores were college friends from Tuskegee Alabama. When this jam was released in ' 81 it was a hit on the R&B, Pop and Country charts.🔥🔥🔥

I always have loved this song, along with Easy.
Lionel Richie was a member of the Commodores in the 70s and singing this song, before he went solo in the early 80's.
one of my all time favorites from my childhood, loved the commodores!!!! Lionel Richie was/is amazing!!!! beautiful beautiful beautiful song here
Lionel was a great great singer back in the day. So many great memories from his romantic songs. He and the Commodores were very popular and his records were heard everywhere you went.

'Just to be close to you' is a great song by the Commodores
One of the most beautiful songs ever. I've always loved it.

The Commodores we're one of those first bands to give a mixed genre, that first introduced us to Rhythm and Blues. And Blues Jazz.
Saw them in concert back in the late 70s.The Commodores played after a band called Parliament. If you are not familiar with Parliament they can rock the house.

Funny you said it sounded country, Lionel did this duet with Tim McGraw...great rendition! Lionel always said he had country roots.
Love, love, love The Commodores and Lionel Ritchie. Jesus Is Love and Zoom are 2 I highly recommend listening to.
They have so many hits!! 🎶They are R&B, and so loved by so many!!💜 Lionel Ritchie's voice is hard to ever mistake for any one elses🎵🎶 "Brickhouse" is one of their biggest hits, so please listen to it!!🎶 Also a slower one that is a little gut wrenching is "Still"🎵🎶
You mentioned a country sound. Lionel Ritchie grew up on country music growing up in the South, but I love the soul they inject into this.
It’s country verses and R&B chorus, that why every damn body loved the commodores they are amazing versatile!
One of my favorite tunes by the band. I loved singing along with Lionel as this song played.
Lionel Ritchie has a beautiful voice. He is also a judge on American Idol and I just saw Earth, Wind and Fire is going to be on American Idol tonight.
A few years ago, Lionel sang this song as a duet with Tim Mcgraw. With Lionel's R&B voice and Tim's country voice, it made for a great sounding duet.
Omg grew up loving Commodores and even Lionel Ritchie solo career. Beautiful song 💗🕊️
Those are two of my favourites too!
Still is a masterpiece
@@laurawhite303You darn skippy. Lionel wrote and performed some great stuff.
I freaking love The Commodores!!!! Saw them at World's of Fun in 1983. My favorite song by them is Easy, like Sunday morning. This is a fav too.
Man!! 1982! I wore this song out heading from Fort Knox, Kentucky to Fort Lee, Virginia!! I was feeling every word and note!!
Damn my aunt used to play this and Lionel Ritchie all the time in the 80's growing up. Love this so much.
I was a senior in high school when this come out. Young and heartbroken. This song all these years later still hurts my heart.
My older siblings listened to Lionel Ritchie & the Commodores ALL THE TIME....and I'm sooo glad they did!!!❤️
An Australian band you should check out is THE LITTLE RIVER BAND. Recommend: 1. HELP IS ON THE WAY (1977 live), 2. LONESOME LOSER (1979 live), & 3. TAKE IT EASY ON ME (live). Great live band!
Just good old boys singing a heartfelt country song. When I was a little kid my parents took me to see them perform at a rodeo.
Thing I loved about the Comodores is that they were real time musicians ..the band was awesome. Try "Stuck on You" By Lionel.
Lionel Richie, started with Commadors, composed must of thier music, before he went out on his own...Writing song for Kenny Roger, like Lady.
Such a talent...
Love Lionel and the Commodoors. Listened to Sail On and Still over and over as a kid.
Super strong song,,
Great musicianship, straight R&B .
Beautiful subtle harmonies. Great song & reaction.
Lionel is a country boy from Alabama. He wrote "Lady" for Kenny Rogers. He also co-wrote "WE ARE THE WORLD".
My favorite by the Commodores and really by Lionel Richie. The beginning part is wistful and regretful and then when it kicks in it's like liberation. Such a personal piece of gold.
just saw Lionel Richie at New Orleans Jazzfest a few weeks ago and he sang this. it was AWESOME!!!
Glad you enjoyed!!
Great song and the ending puts it over the top. Legitimately hits many genre's and very subtlety. Thanks for sharing
Love the Commodores! Check out Just To Be Close To You sometime. Kinda slow but one of my favorites featuring Lionel
