People often don't realize how closely related country, soul, and R&B are until a song like this blends them so seamlessly. They're distinct musical styles that developed in parallel cultures. Two separate cultures that lived side by side but separately for hundreds of years developed their own music, but the proximity of the two cultures meant that they borrowed from eachother until the lines blurred significantly. You can hear soul in older country and you can hear R&B in newer country just like you hear country in this song.

    • @keithknox5829

The best music to me is genre-less. If it feeds the soul, just sit back and enjoy it. They were a lot like the Eagles to me back in the day. Just making good music was all that mattered to them.

The Commodores were formed while Richie was in college at the famed Tuskegee college in Alabama, so their roots to country music is 100% genuine. Matter of fact, Lionel Richie wrote tremendous hits for major country acts, such as "Lady" for Kenny Rogers, which you must review if you haven't already.

When I was 16, I went to a Commodores concert. A friend was going with me as well. Because we were minors, the only way she could go was if an adult went with us. So my mom went with us. It was general admission, so we got there early so we could sit in the front row. My friend was absolutely gorgeous. She got the attention of the stage manager who invited us to meet the band. We met everyone but Lionel Richie. When we had to leave, William King (one of the Commodores, in this video he’s playing the piano/keyboard), wanted to make sure we got to the car safely. It was around 2 in the morning & he walked us to the car. Gave us all a hug & a kiss on the cheek. I’ve never forgotten his kindness.

Lionel Ritchie wrote some amazing songs in different genres; country, soul, motown, r&b, and pop. He was the King of love songs in the 80s, which started in the late 70s with three times a lady and still. We did have it all on radio, plus so many variety shows. One of my favorite bands from childhood. My older cousin (3 yrs older) introduced me to all the great classic R&B groups/artists. The Commodores were one of her favorites (mine too) & whatever new record she bought, she would play it for me, & then I'd go out to buy my own copy of the single or album. We both had awesome collections- Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, The GAP Band, Lakeside, Cameo, etc. The Commodores were the one group I listened to the most, as I was a huge fan of Lionel Richie's song writing talent. The man can write love songs like no one's business - every one guaranteed to be featured at weddings everywhere. Sail On & EASY are my top two favorites, followed by Three Times A Lady, STILL, & Nightshift. Please go further down this rabbit hole. Oh, I almost forgot - Brickhouse will get ya movin' & groovin' in your seat. Every time DJ's would put that song on; whether it was the radio or at a the local nightclub/disco - it always got everyone up on their feet as soon as they heard that opening beat drop, Lionel's "UH!", the horns joining in, & the cat call whistle. That was the signal to get up & dance - LOL!

Groups were allowed to do amazing things floating around all genres and themes. They could do 3 genres in one song if they wished and it was appreciated by other groups instead of being harsh critics of any attempt to step out of the lines. They should bring that attitude back and see the amazing things they could do with freedom of creativity. ❤

Gotta say that I'm not a fan of the duet. Unfortunately, Lionel's voice just isn't what it was, and that legendary smoothness is gone. He sings many of the notes staccato, and it's especially apparent how far off he is when Darius comes in sounding awesome as always. I found it kind of sad to listen to.

I remember, that Lionel Ritchie worked with Kenny Rogers some, before Lionel began to do solo work. I don't remember the song, but Lionel wrote a country hit for Kenny Rogers. The Commodores are from Tuskegee, Alabama, so it isn't as surprising as some would think, that they knew their way around Country music. They sort of did their own thing & weren't stuck in a pigeon hole.

The piano in this song is _so_ good, kind of emotional.Y'all are gonna _LOVE_ everything they do. "Machine Gun" is an instrumental by them that I _LOVE_ . Check it. And speaking of instrumentals, "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group is one of the few rock instrumentals to ever make it to # 1 on the pop charts, My personal all time favorite song. No bull. It's my favorite song _EVER_ . The first album I ever bought was "They Only Come Out at Night", and it was for that song, (I was 11 years old), which is probably why it holds a special place in my heart.

" 3 times a lady" is a great love song by them, " Easy like Sunday morning " is a long the lines of sail on, and it has a great guitar riff! Lionel Richie is one of the very best of his generation and I'm very proud to say he is from my home state of Alabama.

One of the great break up/divorce songs of all time. "I know it's a shame, but I'm givin' you back your name". Classic. This, "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason, and "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin are my three favorites of all time. IMO Lionel Ritchiie is the greatest writer of love songs in the R&R era. Listen to him doing "Still", "My Love", "Ballerina Girl", "You Are", "Easy", "Penny Lover", "Zoom", "Three Times A Lady", "Lady", "Stuck On You", and "Say You, Say Me".

I haven’t heard this song in years but it’s actually incredible. Country, funk, disco, R&B…all together. Most groups can mix 2, maybe 3 styles, but I can literally pick out all four in certain spots. Insane. Commodores are kind of like Chicago; once their lead singer got all schmaltzy pop things kinda when downhill but before that they were FIRE.

You guys hit it right on the nose. Lionel Richie's favorite style of music growing up was country. And that was the reason why Lionel Richie eventually left the commodores. The group kept complaining that Lionel Richie was writing too many country themed love songs.
If you guys are up to it, you should watch and react to the CMT special that Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers did called Crossroads.

Not only were they amazing singers, but they were funny!! After college they had a successful song (can't remember which one) and I remember them being interviewed and the thing I remember best was that when they were asked how they got their name, Lionel Ritchie replied that they closed their eyes and opened a dictionary, and stuck there finger on word. Straight faced he said "We just missed being the commodes".

While at Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia 1979, this song would be played on a jukebox at a snack bar that we were not able to patronize because we training to be soldiers. But we heard this and other classics from that era over and over playing on that jukebox from across the street. It makes me happy to hear this wonderful song. Thanks for the great memories.

Hi guys, this is giving me chills up and down both arms!! I love the Commodores. I went to see them live in 1978 at the LA Forum. Wow was that a concert. My friend and I could only afford tickets up in the cheap seats, but it didn't matter, it was a party. Their costumes were so bright and their moves so smooth, we could see them even though we were so far from the stage. I got a red Commodores t-shirt that I wore to death. I wish so much that I still had it. This song is beautiful. My favorite if you haven't played it already is: "Too Hot to Trot". If you haven't played it , I would love if you could play it for me. It is really funky and fun.

Saw the Commodores at 6 Flags over GA Before Lionel went solo. Was truly magical! Outdoors. Small venue. Little more relaxed environment, so a cloud of smoke hovered overhead. Was 18. Life was great!!! Lucite drums were the rage back then. The old ones are like gold. A new batch has surfaced recently, but a set of good condition originals go for prices you would not believe.
