      he had the first half of his long career as a serious actor (watch and react to one of his first movies from 1956, the scifi "Forbidden Planet"), then came "Airplane!" in 1980 which a lot of serious actors played dead seriously (which is part of why it was so funny), and for him it started the second half of his career consisting of (almost?) only this kind of movies.

    • @Sid-gu5qk
      @Sid-gu5qk Месяц назад +9

      Close, at that time they were only grown in the middle east and they were dried on the ground where they landed, so as a result they ended up being stained, this is why the western markets ended up dyeing the pistachios, to hide the blemishes. Eventually some plants were smuggled to America and a domestic source was created. The American growers used nets beneath the trees so the product wouldn't land on the ground and stain. That's why the dye is no longer used.

Oh and his "boss" played by George Kennedy even won an oscar for his serious work..so this cast is insane. Pistachios bruise/blemish easily - especially since they were being imported from distant producers like Turkey so they dyed them to cover the imperfections. It wasn't until some changes in the federal tax codes that raising pistachios in the US became economically viable. Once the US grown nuts entered the market they really did not need the dye anymore and there were growing concerns about safety at the time so they stopped dying them.

    21:30 Those are old-fashioned pistachios. Most pistachios that were imported into the US prior to the late 90s used to have a red dye powder all over them to mask imperfections on the nuts and shells. This would lead to getting the dye all over your fingers and lips after cracking open the shells. As the early 2000s rolled around, the United States became the second largest supplier for Pistachios and now almost all Pistachios sold in the US (97% or so) come from California. So most places around the country haven't experienced dyed pistachios in 20-30 years. It has been at least 25 years since I've seen them here.

    Back then most pistachios were imported and people used to think a blemish on the shell mean't the nut inside was bad so companies coated them in red or green powder to cover up blemishes.
    Now that most of our pistachios are grown here in the US companies quit coating them in powders to cover up blemishes.

      OJ's first movie was The Klansman in 1974, with Richard Burton, Lee Marvin, & Lola Falana. That same year he was part of the large all-star cast disaster movie The Towering Inferno, a huge hit at the time. My favorite movie with him in it, apart from the Naked Gun trilogy, is The Cassandra Crossing (1977), with really cheesy dialogue but a wonderful cast and story. Unfortunately, OJ was a terrible actor, contributing nothing of value to any of these movies; he fine in the Naked Gun movies because he only had to do slapstick, not anything requiring acting talent. He has one scene in the first episode of Roots, which was specially written for him because he asked to be in the show, and the makers of the miniseries felt they couldn't say no to him; they should have said no, as his performance is wooden and the scene does not help advance the story in any way.
