@@CalypsoDarling "We Are the World" is a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World.
This was put together by Quincy Jones, Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson in 1985 as a benefit for famine relief in Africa, which was particulary bad at the time. It won 3 Grammys, and raised more than $60 million, every artist donated their time and talents to help others. I bought it.
I love that you love Steve Perry! He is my all time absolute favorite singer, and he absolutely Killed his solo in this. Everyone was Wonderful and no autotune🎼🎤
Quincy Jones and MJ were able to get this group into one studio. Apparently, Quincy posted a sign on the studio door that said, "No Egos Allowed". When you see major stars like Bette Midler, Harry Belafonte and The Pointer Sisters, singing in the chorus, you know this was a powerful gathering.
"Please check your egos at the door." Prince was asked to participate by Lionel Ritchie. Prince asked if he could perform in a separate room, which Lionel couldn't do. He then mistakenly told Prince, "I can sit you next to Michael [Jackson]." To which Prince quipped, "I'll do a guitar solo." Lionel then said, "I'll call you later."
@@ayaanbretmitchell9830 The rivalry between MJ and Prince is well documented, The one-off performance in 1983, however, between those 2 and James Brown was what really solidified his hatred of MJ. That performance was an opportunity for Prince to steal the show with James. Unfortunately, he had problems with his mic and a guitar not working, along with him getting humiliated by a falling stage prop while leaving the stage.
@@minty_Joe I love Prince but he definitely had little man syndrome. He was really unkind to a lot of the women he dated and married too. Very talented but not very nice.
This was special. They did it after an award show and stayed all night to get it done. You won’t see the most talented voices from all eras come together. It was beautiful. One more thing is this doesn’t get done without Michael and Quincey they both were top in the business with that much influence and pull.
Our generation was so hopeful growing up with songs and movements like this. Thirty some years later I feel like we need a song this good again. Something to unite people with positivity.
This song was remade in 2010 but it wasn't as good as the original . This time it was for Haiti. Michael Jackson was already deceased by then but they had to put his parts in the song. Lionel Richie was also part of it but just to help the other artist. They were the writers of the original song. This one was also produced by Quincy Jones.
The reboot was horrible and the auto tune stood out like a sore thumb which made the song that much more disappointing. Since this was a completely new cause, they should have contributed something completely new and fresh and just associated with this particular group of artists. The reboot was a horrible failure.
Except the British did it first just months before with Feed the World, written by Bono. It was a better song too and holds up today as a still played Christmas song. Feed the World was just much better.
After nearly 4 decades this song still brings me to tears. It was such a labor of love, but more than that it was SUCH an important project. In the mid-1980s a terrible famine was ravaging Ethiopia and people were dying by the thousands. By the time it finally ended over a million people had died. Those images, especially the ones of the sick and emaciated children, have never left me. It was absolutely heartbreaking. This project raised over $60 million for famine relief and this song is still earning money. I doubt we will ever see a collaboration of this magnitude again and I’m glad I was alive for it.
I was 4 years old when this song came out. My dad had it on an LP so as teenager i listened to it and i have loved it ever since. It still makes me emotional to this day
Stevie Wonder's solo gives me shivers every time I hear it. His voice is so smooth and effortless and powerful! My favorite part of the song, hands down!
I think what makes it so special is how this came together. The icons of different genres just saying, “okay. I’m there. Let’s make this happen”. Beautiful moment in music and mankind.
When this came out, it was truly epic and the world stopped and listened. It made everyone tear up a little and made the world a better place for a few minutes.
You are 100% correct when you say "the world stopped and listened". I was 20 years old in 1985 and an exchange student from England. A friend of mine and I were at a McDonalds in New York City, and we met a Canadian couple who had to go back to Toronto the next day. So they gave us a couple of tickets to the "Live Aid" concert at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, PA, which was taking place in a few days. My friend and I were not just appreciative, but blown away!! We took the Greyhound bus a couple of days later to Philly. I still remember the date: July 13th, 1985 (don't remember the day though). The JFK Stadium held around 100,000 people (it was demolished in 1992). When we got there, it was packed! They let us in the gates at around 5pm Eastern time. As the stadium was filling up, we could see the concert at Wembley Stadium in England on the big screen. It was amazing!! Freddie Mercury and Queen, Sir Elton John, Phil Collins and many more on the screen "live" from London. After about 4 hours, Sir Bob Geldof came on the screen and said "thank you Wembley, we now hand it over to Philadelphia, thank you!". And then before we knew it Lionel Richie stepped onto the stage, and all 100,000 of us went nuts! The highlight of the performances at the JFK Stadium, had to be Phil Collins - hands down. He was at Wembley Stadium, and performed "One more Night". So we saw him on the big screen. But unbeknown to us, he got on the supersonic "Concorde" plane, and flew to NYC (in 3 hours from London), and caught a private jet to Philly to be with us live. When he appeared on stage, most of us thought he was a "body double", as we had just seen him on the screen in London, 4 hours ago! It took us a couple of minutes to realize it was him on stage in front of us! He also mentioned he had a great flight on the Concorde. That's when we "got it" and believed. He played "In the Air Tonight". It was amazing, and an evening I will never forget. One of those moments, where the event was truly "lightning in a bottle". Lastly, a big thank you to Harry Belafonte and music manager Ken Kragen (RIP) who got all those artists (on the American side), for the "We Are The World" recording, and the Live Aid simulcast on July 13th, 1985 at the JFK Stadium. I am glad to have been a witness to musical history! Thanks for reading my post. Enjoy! Cheers, Sam.

Lionel Ritchie & Michael Jackson wrote this brilliant song for charity; it's amazing how all these artists & chorus came together; this is exceptional; I listened to this song everyday during the pandemic; it gave me hope
To coordinate the calendars, they had to do it on the same day as a major award show, where most stars would be in the same town anyway. Because waiting 1 year for a free spot in everyone's schedule would mean a lot of dead children.

Asia and Bj this song came out after Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas which was Aid for Africa started by Sir Bob Geldof which also was the start of Live Aid and the greatest performance of all time by Queen.
I feel the same as you Asia, I have chills and tears at the same time. What a moving video and a moving time in our history. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and this is just a continuation of that great era in music.
I was just talking about that to my son - we ALL gave up everything for each other, we actually DID make a difference but the last generation undid all our progress. It's weird and sad 🤷♀️❤️✌️

You have Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry, Cindy Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and more, and you feel they are squeezin' their souls on every word and every verse... It doesnt matter if you've listened a hundreds of times...always shakes to your very soul, what amazing combo of some of the greatest voices ever and these emotional melodies.
I was a teenager when this came out and didn't appreciate it as much as I do now. I can hold it together right up until Ray comes on, then I just start bawling.
Young people will never know how this song changed lots of people. Is a song that when we saw on MTV for 1st time made everyone cry, still to this day in 2022 it bring tears to my eyes. It was what opened the eyes to many beyond the USA. Kids in Africa may had never knew anything about USA or any other country, but they knew who MJ was, the most known in the world. RIP 👑 POP
A timeless musical masterpiece that definitely hits different and still brings tears to this day. You could never get a room full of legends like that ever again, RIP to those gone before us.
Michael and Lionel wrote it, Quincy produced it. Huge effort to raise awareness and funds for starvation in Africa. Beautiful, moves me every time. ❤👍🏽
And every time we send these "funds" to some African country, corruption and dictatorships usually become even worse. Less than ten percent of the money reach the poor, on average. That's how it has been since the early 1970s, at least.
Lionel Richie's voice like butter... This was truly a masterpiece, all of these spectacular people showed up only a few minutes to go over the script and get their turn and tune. Micheal left and recorded his voice later. No one understands why he left, some say it was due to a spat. I can name them all... learn their names and listen to their music. 💜🙌🏽
hehehe.... I can Still hear one of his "Greatest Hit's"..... THE THEME TO SANFORD AND SON!!! hehehe Joking aside, This has to be his Greatest Achievement... All those Superstars, and not ONE 'tude shown! He was the Sheriff, and he kept the Peace!
When Quincy Jones invited all those mega super star musical artists to participate in making this recording for a good cause, he specifically noted in the invitation "check your egos at the door". One superstar who was invited at the time failed to participate was Prince, because of a selfish personal reason. Another superstar who did not participate was Madonna, who would have a conflict with her scheduled concert date at the time of the recording session. Can you imagine what further impact on the recording should both Prince and Madonna contributed?

I was a teen when this came out, I’m now 53 and still tear up hearing this and seeing so much iconic talent come together for such a great cause. I hope you take the time to explore all of these extraordinary artists.
The message in this song is VERY timely right now. Seriously, ya'll, there's a lot us "boomers" don't get (like the latest cell phone or wireless ear buds) but we DID get some of the more important things we worked hard for since we were young: and that is that people need to work at getting along. There is no "agenda" here. It's just deciding to get along. No giving up of anyone's ideas, popular or not popular, you just love people, man! So glad you guys did this one.
You should see the song that started it off, the British artists did Band Aid- "Do They Know It`s Christmas" , then the American artists "replied" with this song. Bob Geldof organized it...with George Michael, Sting, Boy George, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Bananarama, many others.
I always thought "Do They know It's Christmas" was a better song. But both songs were for a great cause and raised a lot of money and attention to what was going on in Ethiopia.
Canada also replied with 'Tears Are Not Enough'....some of the artists on the track include Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Getty Lee, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson etc.
Funny story to Band-Aid, they needed some more artist. Kool & the gang were touring in Britain at the time, so you will ses Kool & the gang in the video.
Yes it was amazing back then even though we knew everyone’ s music before they came together to do this. You all should try to react each ones top songs, they all had great songs. Micheal & Lionel wrote it and Quincy Jones-produced it.
They recorded this after the American Music Awards, so all of the talent was in Hollywood that night. They went to the studio in L.A. (Capitol or AnM, I cant remember?) and knocked it out in FIVE hours. It was Michaels idea and he was inspired by the UK song collab. He called Lionel Ritchie and they met at some restaurant , and thats where the actual documentary picks up. Michael already had most of the lyrics written when they got together. And then they called Stevie Wonder and met with him and he called Quincy Jones and thats how it all started. His Purpleness was invited, but declined, reasons unknown. The documentary on here about it is very good and just under an hour long. Peace!
@@bethshadid2087 MJ went to Lionel with all the lyrics already made over a nght , he gave credits to Lionel for friendship . Yeah Belafonte asked for someone to write a charity song , but the artistic creativity came from MJ .

It is so fantastic to watch you watch this. These artists who are now legends were playing the music of our lives, and sadly so many are gone now. The world could use a lot more of this right now.
You are right. We COULD have MORE of this if our divisive media would close their mouths sometimes. I remember when this song was released, it was an EPIC time and we all supported it and gave money. All magic, all love.
Sorry late comment lol, im only 17 But still remember singing this in early school choirs with all of the parents and the kida at the school absolutly singing to fullest
I revisited this song thanks to the doc on Netflix and one of my key takeaways was how entirely he managed to pack himself/his style into those two lines. Unreal.
This was the most amazing thing. That many singers from different walks of life and different genres of music........All in the same room at the same time singing this. That would never happen today. They would all sing from their own studios and then someone would just put it all together. This is so very special.
This song makes me tear up so because this world is nowhere near where it should've been when this song was made.....and so many of these great artists are dying........I had just turned 4 when this song came out.....and now I'm older than Diana Ross was in this video..the youngest person in terms of their career during thing song was Cyndi.....this song was magical man...

I can tell you guys are good people. Nothing but love and respect from a Mexicano-American born in Boyle Heights, living in the San Fernando Valley. ❤ Peace, love, unity and respect and happiness!
I don't think that there was ever a point in history where more talent was collected in a single room than during the recording of that song. So many amazing artists.
Well Take a look at the UK hit 'Do they Know its Christmas Time' Feat. Bono, Phil Collins, Boy George, George Michael to name a few - if you hav'n't heard it give it a listen you might be pleasantly suprised.

This was one of the greatest collaborations that ever took place in music history
Me too
Same. He’s the real deal.
Same
Because Stevie Wonder is the best ever singer on the planet
I think what makes it so special is how this came together. The icons of different genres just saying, “okay. I’m there. Let’s make this happen”. Beautiful moment in music and mankind.
They say they completed it in one take.
How is this song STILL giving me chills? I've listened to it hundreds of times.
When this came out, it was truly epic and the world stopped and listened. It made everyone tear up a little and made the world a better place for a few minutes.
I still cry every time I hear this song!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if it would've lasted longer than that? However, I guess a few minutes is a small miracle in this world.

Several HUNDRED number 1 hits from the artists in that room that day. Almost EVERYONE in that room had multiple number one hits and formed the music for several generations. The star power was AMAZING.
I remember when this came out. It was huge. It was everywhere.
It's mostly a long vamp and I miss vamping.
back when celebrities were relatable and actually looked like real people..
Ah back when people could actually sing & all artists had CRAZY talent!
Yes yes this is golden era !
and they left their ego at the door.

James Ingram.
Lol it wasn't even a duet. They post produced it to sound like it was. Springsteen sang to the original chorus.
Love that, but for me its when Cyndi Lauper comes in at the end of her set with the "yeah yeah yeah" - that moment sends me over the edge!

This was mind blowing to me as a kid growing up in the 80's. All our favorite artists together in one song, spreading love.
Show how together we had it in the 80s. I wish our world would get back to those days
Today there would be people protesting against this.

RIP 👑 POP
I am 28 years old and I swear to God I feel like we should go back to the 80s for real
I'm 47. I remember this. I'm so glad you all can experience now too. It was an incredible time for music and the world
The man directing is Quincy Jones. Legend.

So special. Such talent in one room, can’t ever be replicated.
This is so heartwarming. We need a whole lot more of this right now.
I grew up loving this song. My best friend and I would sing this song walking down the street early 80s
I'm a 60's baby, so the impact to my generation was massive. I was 18 when this song came out.

You two are officially my favorite reactors! Asia there is pure joy on your beautiful face during this! ❤️❤️❤️
Even for me, a young Soviet kid at that time, it was very touching! Great song!
Seriously, it's basically the other half of this for reactors.

Peace!
Because he wanted to be separated from the group to do his part

I revisited this song thanks to the doc on Netflix and one of my key takeaways was how entirely he managed to pack himself/his style into those two lines. Unreal.
This was the most amazing thing. That many singers from different walks of life and different genres of music........All in the same room at the same time singing this. That would never happen today.
