    "Their request to use the UbiArt engine was swiftly denied" and "Ubisoft marketing division prevented it from moving forward".
    So, in the end, they actually don't know their friends. LOL

    As someone who worked on KyF, thank you for this video. The game was very fun and honestly, a good way to spend time with your friends. We loved to play the game during lunchbreaks and we had many ideas to expand it later. One of them was acquiring licences (Like Marvel) for DLC contents.

    A few years later, and would you look at that, Jackbox swooped in and made a whole series out of the same type of game. I bet Ubisoft execs still wake up in the middle of the night and whisper "Know Your Friends".

    • @PatManDX

      Marketing was always done through livestreamers and youtubers, who are also their primary audience. So they never really needed a lot of marketing if you think about it, since their customers would do it for them as a consequence of just playing the game.

    Dang, I feel really bad for the devs of this game. Putting all that work in and getting so excited that it's ready to be released at any time, only to find out it'd never come out. This game would probably be a hit with streamers on PC now'n days, this type of game has recently gained some popularity. :(

    That's ridiculous. Even if they didn't want to spend more money on it to market it and manufacture and ship physical copies, wouldn't throwing it up on the Wii U eShop and maybe recouping some of the development costs have been better than just throwing it in the trash and making no money off it?

    • @brwntwn123

    • @Kawacozy
      @Kawacozy 6 лет назад +2

      Well yes, you have to include any marketing costs too, but digital distribution itself is far more affordable than physical distribution, after all, it's what gave indies a big rise, and many triple a publishers pushed for digital distribution to become widespread so they could cut out the retailers for profit.
      Also every russian and their mom has some shovelware game on steam nowadays anyway due to steam direct which iirc has a mere 100$ fee attached to it.

    • @japzone
      @japzone 6 лет назад +4

      mr.gokys, Ubisoft already paid Nintendo the platform fees, and from the sounds of it they used mostly in house engine and libraries, so licensing fees would be minimal. Besides corporate politics and stupidity, I really see no reason a finished game like this couldn't have been dumped on the eShop.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 лет назад +1

      I don't know how it is now, but in the past you couldn't throw a disc based game into eShop that easily, Nintendo demanded very severe size restrictions and needed major reasons to make an exception, thus difficult negotiations or an extra engineering expense to get the game size down.
      Devkits are not that expensive, a few thousand per seat and they needed only a handful of those, and Nintendo library royalty is part of their distribution cut, but the Ubisoft localisation and localisation QA, Nintendo QA all cost a big chunk of money, plus Ubisoft is just a huge company with various overheads so it stands to reason that they diced the numbers and they didn't come out favourable. A company like this is all about making money, and given how successful they are in spite of aggravating players once on a while, they must be really, really good at counting money, making all sorts of financially relevant predictions.

  • @Real1Gaming

    • @Xatzimi
      @Xatzimi 6 лет назад +88

      Not quite, it would take work to retool since one of the core mechanics was using the gamepad to answer discreetly. That'd take work and they'd probably just rather cut their losses.

      Wii U had a lot of potential, but Nintendo completely screwed up the marketing of it, creating misconceptions about it that would later be cemented in the minds of consumers. The name for one was a big mistake. Because of the big focus on the controller in the marketing, the name caused a lot of people to think it was some really expensive accessory for the Wii instead of a standalone console. Because of that, parents got confused whether Wii U games would work on their existing Wii, ended up buying games that their kids couldn't play making them annoyed/upset/angry. And on and on. The misunderstandings built off each other like that.

  • @benjaminkellog7311

    Yeah, maybe a digitized parlor game wasn't exactly the "killer app" the Wii U needed, but it is kinda neat one of the Wii's biggest legacies might have had a bit more representation in the next generation. I think this also became the premise of one of the games in one of the recent Jackbox Party Packs, proving it does have some legs.

    Spends money on developing game, develops working versions, gets rating, gets a working prototype for other systems to release digitally, chooses to throw everything away rather than release digitally... I have a feeling they want to keep up a certain image to investors and would rather throw a project away than release it to poor sales with no cost to them. Throwing profit away for reputation reasons.

    This game just reminds me of something you'd find on facebook both in art-style and general concept.

    I don't understand. How much does it cost to publish a game on the Wii U eShop? Development was done, so even if you have a marketing budget of $0, wouldn't a few thousand sales be better than none? Unless it actually has a cost to put the game on the store they didn't think they could recoup, I'm not sure why they wouldn't just put it out there anyway.
    Plus, indies did well on Wii U, people were starving for games and the eShop was the main way to find them, so I'm not sure marketing would have even been needed. Nintendo probably would have gladly promoted the game on the front page just to have some show of support from a major publisher.

    The concept really reminds me of the PS4 PlayLink game That's You

    That footage where Iwata was present (for example at 0:43), where is it from? Was that an internal presentation or a small press conference? I've never seen that before.
    Really interesting video!

    It blows my mind that companies can deny other departments access to their technology. Is there seriously no one in charge?

    Putting it on the Chromecast/Android TV and "casting" the game from your phone to the TV would be a good way to retain the camera functionality.

    I'm actually rather interested in the concept, as it could lead to very fun (and some awkward) situations between friends, but whether or not it would have been a hit, I guess we'll never know...

    The game sounds like a video game version of Cards Against Humanity. Seems like a few minor reworks would make this perfect for Switch.

    I honestly could have seen this working as a multiplat title on any console or PC using smartdevice and a browser app similar to Jackbox games.
    Ubisoft shot themselves in the foot by making a casual game a Wii U exclusive.
