    This time on Did You Know Gaming extra, we take a look at how a Dreamcast developer helped pirates emulate SEGA Genesis games on the console. Then we take a look at how Ubisoft pirated their own soundtrack of an Assassins Creed game, as well as a developer who put their entire game on a pirating site. Then we finish off with a possible Easter egg linked to Company of Heroes.

    Acid Wizard is a cool af developer. They gave me a key for Darkwood during a long unemployment stint, once I eventually got a job I bought the game on Steam for everyone on my team, 14 copies.

    The Assassin's Creed Brotherhood goof wasn't the only time Ubisoft used piracy of their own titles and properties as official content or fixes: back in 2008 when Rainbow Six Vegas 2 released, alongside the retail release, Ubisoft released a digital version on IGN's Direct 2 Drive. Now, Ubisoft at the time was still quite adamant about the old ways of preventing pirated copies to work, and required you to actually have the disc inserted in the DVD reader of your PC to work, and just omitted that line of code for the digital release. Come the first update of the game, and someone at Ubisoft forgot about the fact that they had even released the game on Direct 2 Drive, and thus the update locked people out of the game they legitimately bought, and not even Ubisoft themselves could get around their own anti-piracy measures, as not even a clean install with the previous version of the game would work. What was their solution? They just downloaded a crack from GameCopyWorld, and released it as the official fix, even leaving the coder's name and the 8-bit tune you find with these cracked installers.

  • @alexnurse3498
    @alexnurse3498 6 лет назад +54

    Hold up. They put it out and just asked nicely "Hey, if you like it, can you buy it? Like... ya know, be cool?"
    ... and that worked! How about that!

    • @GenericWhiteYouTuber
      @GenericWhiteYouTuber 6 лет назад +9

      Yeah, that's really cool. I think part of the reason was because they're a smaller studio. I think it's at least possible that if a bigger company did something like that, some people still wouldn't purchase it because of companies' size.

    • @Compucles
      @Compucles 6 лет назад +3

      Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised. Back in the 80's, developers of DOS games tried the same thing with what they called the Shareware release model, and it failed miserably. It only worked out for them once they adjusted the Shareware model so that only the first episode of an episodic game was free and required you to buy the other episodes, which evolved into what we now know as playable demos.

      Reminds me a bit of the "Under the Ocean"-dev, who for quite some time ago promised to send out steam keys for one of his other games if you had bought the previous game during Early Access and sent him an e-mail. The stuff about Acid Wizard reminds me of the creator of McPixel. He released his game on the Pirate Bay mainly because felt that the usual means of distributing games in Poland (where he's from) would fall short when it came to getting the word out about his game. when he released it on TPB he said the game actually got more exposure and sales than it would have otherwise.

    I find it very nice but odd that a company would put their game on Pirate Bay. Nice because there are people that don't have enough money to play it, but odd that they would do it in the first place, as it was a pretty big risk.

    • @vurpo7080
      @vurpo7080 6 лет назад +63

      I don't think it was a very big risk. Piracy isn't like what the industry makes it out to be. The game was going to be pirated online anyway, but by doing it themselves they actually earned themselves an increase in sales (since a stunt like that gets them a lot of good attention).
      Every game is available to pirate eventually, but yet people buy games because that's what they want to do. They understand what is at stake when they decide to buy the game, and those who can't afford to buy the game in the first place don't affect any lost sales anyway when they pirate it.

      Indeed, there are certainly a lot of greedy and selfish pirates but a surprising amount are good people who are unable to play games any other way. I'm surprised this didn't mention the fact that Nintendo download a SMB1 iNES ROM file and included that in their Wii Virtual Console release of SMB1

    Man, I knew Darkwood looks cool as all hell, but I didn't know the developers were such good sports and just reasonable people. I should really buy it at some point, even though that sort of horror is perhaps too much for me.

    Did you know? In Mario Kart 7, the result screen music is a reference to Mario Kart 64's result screen music?

    That last fact sounds eerily similar to what the real Richard Winters said at the end of the miniseries Band of Brothers. Touching nontheless.

    I'm surprised that you didn't mention the (speculative, sure, but interesting nonetheless) fact that Nintendo presumably downloaded the first Super Mario Bros off the internet and then sold that pirated ROM-version on the Wii Virtual Console. The smoking gun was the .NES header encoded within the ROM, a telltale sign of the early days of NES emulation. At least from what I remember

    Nintendo once used a pirated NES Super Mario Bros. Rom for virtual console. Look it up!

    The psx emulator for Xbox (pcsxbox v20+) was created with an official devkit. That makes the emulator itself a pirated piece of software.

    Wait wasn't that Dick Winters in the video from Band of Brothers? Maybe I am mistaken.
