You can actually go directly into the Wii menu at boot by pressing and holding the B button on the gamepad during startup. Little known fact!
Vanilla or CFW-specific thing?
@@ktheveg Vanilla! Nintendo does something helpful and they never even tell anyone about it lol.
WTF! WHY! This is so useful for me, but why was it so hidden?!
Wait fr I'ma try it
@@herrkampf473 I wonder if you know about holding the select button while launching a DS game on the 3DS to play in its native resolution
The hidden GameCube console within the Wii virtual console within the wiiu is what makes it incredible after you mod.
It's not even Virtual Console, there's a real Wii inside of the Wii U and by extension a real gamecube
it's the same thing as gba on dsi, no emulation required
Came here to say this. My WiiU is basically a HDMI equipped GameCube. It's a shame that that adapter for GC pads is kind of rare and expensive, and is supported by so little. You can use it in GC games but bizarrely Nintendo never supported it in vWii...WHY!?
@@meatsafemurderer7743 most normal wii models after 2010-2011 are without gamecube support, at least without homebrew and there are no controller slot
@@meatsafemurderer7743 they definitely should have supported it. I think there was also some issue with the disc drive not being able to read GC games though so it wouldn't make much sense.
However, I know at the very least there is a code for Brawl that lets you use the adapter on the vWii.
The fact that WII U can play everything nintendo before 3DS and use pretty much any bluetooth controller with homebrew is insanely good.
Not just play, but play GC and Wii games natively on the hardware and everything else with emulators made by Nintendo. It's amazing.
Whats even cooler, even though the Wii U doesnt have any GameCube support, Nintendont allows it. Theres also a way to put GameCube games on your home menu. It even makes the classic startup sound along with its own Virtual Console splash screen!
The wii u is backwards compatible with every nintendo console except 3ds and the switch and its possible if you homebrew the console
@@AhmedZ19 Thats neat. So you can play every older console. Maybe if it tried hard enough, it could play 3DS, but i think the framerate would be low.
@@doggo6471 I don't think anyone has made a solution for that at this time
Hold B on boot on an unmodded console to directly boot the wii menu. Holding B with tiramisu will give you the homebrew launcher, and holding start with tiramisu or aroma will give the boot selector shown in the video.
Also the "Please wait" screen is the console waiting for storage devices such as an external hard drive to spin up.
In case anyone wanted to know.
Didn't know that shortcut existed on unmodded Wii U's. Kinda cool :D
Personally, I had a few things that annoyed me with the Wii U. One of which is that you can't transfer Miis from your Wii remote to and from the console, even just within vWii. And I know it's got the functionality to read wii remote data because wii sports can grab the miis just fine, but you can't export it. Still haven't found any homebrew to resolve this
@Rick and Morty 🅥 unvalid
Had a similar problem. The best workaround I found was to transfer the Miis to an original Wii, then transfer them to a 3DS, and THEN you can transfer them to the Wii U.
It's stupid all the way through, and I hate how they removed that feature from the Mii Maker.
Have you modded your Wii and Wii u? There is a way of exporting and importing Mii's with Savegame Manager GX
@@Frapskillar i used it when i did wii to wii u transfer, on my wii miis were deleted but i can't modify them anymore
Putting a Mii on the Wii remote was always gimmicky at best but man would it be nice
12:28 Fun Fact: The creator of Aroma and Tiramisu already made that, in fact, you just put a file on your SD Card and BOOM, a replacement of the Wii U Menu called Launchiine, but we should wait since its still a WiP
Edit: and probably has been discontinued in favor of Aroma
I love how if the battery dies, you plug it in, and can immediately turn it on again. With Switch, once the battery is dead, I have to wait for 10mins of charging or something before I can turn the thing on again, =P. Since the GamePad is only a screen, and the console is plugged into the mains, it doesn't take a lot of charge to get the screen going again. So if you lose power suddenly, you can just reach for the GamePad power cord, and get back into things quickly.
I love that part of the Wii U.. I hate having to wait for my Switch to charge up..
You can actually switch out the battery for one about twice the size of the factory battery
@@kenrickkahn because the Switch has its own operating system, the wait time exists to minimize under-voltage damage. The GamePad barely has an operating system, much less risky at 0%
My switch takes a lot longer than that sometimes. I plugged mine in before I went to church, and when I got back it STILL had the battery icon on the screen
I was using an official power supply too
@@LegoWormNoah101 Sorry, but I don't quite understand your argument. Why would it make sense for the switch to have under-voltage protection, but not the Wii U GamePad?
Even ignoring its hidden capabilities, the Wii U has always been good in my eyes. I'm still a little kid knowing nothing about how this awesome system could fail, at heart.

I would argue that the flagship Mario game on the Wii U is Super Mario Maker.
This is great! I've been waiting so long for this kind of exploit to come out. Now I have a reason dust off my Wii U and plug it in.
I would think it would be Mairo Maker and 3D Land. They were both pretty good games.
@@doggo6471 3D World*
Probably nothing would have saved the Wii U, but I think it would have sold quite a bit better than it did if Super Mario Maker had been a launch title. It would have been a showpiece for what you could do with the tablet. I thought it was pretty embarrassing that the big launch title was a 2D Mario game that had no meaningful use of the tablet and looked suspiciously like a Wii game.
@@ressljs Also, the console advratising was absloute shit. They only advertised the controller and not the console. Keep in mind that Wii "U" makes it sound like a simple controller.
Mario Maker together with splatoon where basically nr 1 reason to have a wii U
It's really nice to see this console basically getting a second redemption, and it deserves a lot of respect for basically giving us the idea of a console with some portable compacity that would later evolve into the Switch.

As someone who is into modding scenes on other consoles but not the Wii U (I just don't own one), this video is great! So glad you didn't include a tutorial on how to install them, as that's the mistake most RUclipsrs make.
The full hardware Wii and GC inside the Wii U are the reason I've modded mine. That should be a big reason for you. Don't expect video quality over HDMI to be pixel perfect hough. Not every part of the Wii hardware is integrated into the console, including the video circuitry. That is emulated in software, and the software has a bug that makes Chroma for red and green shifted by one pixel (you can read about in some forums, they're looking for a solution to this). If you can look past that you basically don't need a Wii and GC anymore.
@@marinellovragovic1207 I generally never notice the chroma issue, but a few games such as punch out and the last story have a very bad chroma issue on HDMI monitors
@@antusFireNova Best case scenario is owning a Wii and WiiU. The Wii over component looks incredible. Like actually perfect.
Get yourself a WiiU off eBay for like £100, I got a black 64GB one with a tablet and two pro controllers. It is for me (owning every console since the NES) the most underrated console of them all.
And I didn't even hack or jailbreak my one. It's just a great console if you have the blockbuster games.
For instance BOTW is superior on Wiiu, as is Mario Maker. Most Switch games were stolen ports of WiiU games anyway!
I dont care what anyone says about the Wii U, I adore it, I vivdly remember getting it Christmas 2012, setting it up and the next day playing Nintendo Land and NSMBU. My fav titles are Smash Bros for Wii U, Pikmin 3, Mario Maker and Splatoon, such nostalgia...
Same. I got it in 2013 or 14 with Nintendo Land and Super Mario 3D World.
I hate how underrated this channel is. I spent most of the time in my life doing the same stuff you do on this channel. Nerdy shit. From modding minecraft, old consoles and even CRT TVs. This channel shows how archival and documentation of software can be fun, cool and most importantly, beneficial. I hope to see your channel explode one day. I have subbed to this channel for a very long time since basically the beginnings and i love your stuff!
Some things I want to point out:
You can use a Wii u VCinject called tecon moon to inject wii games, gamecube games right on the wii u UI.
You can use the Wii u tablet as a controller and a screen for gamecube games and Wii games.
Playing gamecube games on the wii u is an awesome experience.
It also gets rid the need to to use upscalers for your wii or gamecube consoles.
The Wii U had a few great games, one being mario maker, the mario maker experience was significantly better on wii u than switch due to the touch pad controls.
Game and wario was a real fun with its clever use of the tablet controls.
One game in particular was the pictionary clone and I still every Christmas and thanksgiving will play the pictionary clone with my family.
Zelda Windwaker HD is a great experience and so it Twilight princess HD because of the map and inventory systems being put on the tablet, you don't skip a beat switch items or figuring out where you are.
I think the sad part about the Wii U failing is the tablet never got to be fully used. It was a second screen meaning you could have split gameplay experiences that no other console could provide, it's why the pictionary clone works so darn well, the drawing people are the only ones who know what the answer is, I could have imagined that idea being more refined for other experiences.
Love the console, I own 3 lol
WiiU is awesome to play Nintendo's library!
The split screen possibility using the gamepad has its pros and cons. I remember first time playing MK8 in local multiplayer I thought it was dumb that they had the split screen when they could have used the gamepad for one player.
Later on, playing Sonic all stars racing transformed (which does exactly that) I realized its not as fun if there are more friends watching you playing against another friend, cause they only get to see the PoV from the one player playing on the TV, making me realize that split screens are not that bad after all.
@@elEd0 Yeah, not as fun, but it does hide your item from your opponent and if you are an honorable player you may turn your view away from the TV screen so you couldn't see your friends items.
I still think split screen should be an option, just that the game pad had the ability to show you a completely different view of the same game, a map or inventory system, or other bits of information that would normally take up your entire screen.
I actually still play with my family the "mini game" called SKETCH from the game and wario collection for the Wii U. It is the most fun way to keep entertained a room full of people. There is another game that's you are a thief and other 5 agents try to get you, everything only playing with the Wii u control! It is super super fun!!! Christmas 2022.
To me, its always been good. Seriously, the console is so overlooked and underrated. Lots of fun games especially for Virtual Console, ability to play off screen. Controller has its own sensorbar for playing Wii games that need it, like Metroid Prime Trilogy, etc. It's my most favourite console, probably even more so than Switch.
The fact it has many great games but still didn't sell well clearly says the opposite of your sentiment.
Also, Virtual Console games are just ports of older console titles and they're not available anymore since the store shut down. Using those as arguments for why the Wii U is good is a very week point
One thing I'll say about the Wii-U is that you don't have to pay subscription for Internet access unlike this current console generation (more to do with online features for games), and the RUclips was really functional on it. I also really liked how big the UI buttons were and my battery on it was surprisingly good, even on red. For the time, it was really good for me when my TVs didn't work
Mario 3D World was the flagship mario game. It wasnt that out there, but stuck out more than Super Mario U with it's presentation for story, trying to do bosses and stages in 3D with good level design and new abilities. It was way more immersive too
I used the YT Wii U app in 2016 and sometimes it would just infinitely load
There's a quick start option for faster menus, and you can boot into Wii Mode on startup by holding down B on boot, if you have the option to do so enabled.
Region locking the tablet could be due to wireless spectrum channel licensing. A few countries get really pedantic about what WiFi channels are available to consumer products. (the tablet uses a kind of WiFi Direct custom network to send the input and audio visual data in a low latency format)
Is possible that the tablets are region locked due to the wireless communication. Wireless standards vary from country to country and you can get in a lot of trouble if your device doesn't comply. For example Japan has Wi-Fi channels that we are not allowed to use in North America or anywhere else outside of Japan. Devices that broadcast on those channels can't be set for sale in basically any country other than Japan. Could be something like that.
Shure, a company big in the microphone and sound industry has wireless products that are different for each region and non-compatible for just that reason.
People are probably going to bring up that other controllers don't require that, however other controllers don't have built-in screens. The wireless communication is going to be much more complicated than with the basic wiimote
Not sure if it's mentioned in the video because I have yet to watch it, but for completeness Wikipedia even says the GamePad uses a local Wi-Fi network to connect directly to the Wii U and it streams the GamePad's screen contents as a video with a decoder chip inside it.
The biggest thing that discounts that argument is simply that the gamepads aren't region specific on a technical level. Any gamepad from any region *can* work on any WiiU, meaning there's no differences like wireless protocol or frequency (otherwise they wouldn't work at all) and Nintendo chose to block it because they could.
@@meatsafemurderer7743 they wouldn't change hardware, just lock it down in software. Both the Wii U and gamepad are probably capable of using all the region channels, but because of potential violations they have it locked down. If you unlock that, it just hops on the channel it needs to and Bob's your uncle.
@@beardalaxy it'd be interesting to scan the 2.4Ghz band while the foreign pad is syncing, to see which channels get probed/used. There's many mobile apps for that. I'd also expect Nintendo to use hidden SSIDs to "workaround" this lol.
(Haven't read how that works, so I may be wrong.)
@@meatsafemurderer7743 there's a difference between being physically compatible and legal. A potential multi-million-dollar difference
With Tiramisu modding I really love it, it works perfectly and doesn’t need any pre requirements for it
is it possible to move from haxchi to tiramisu/aroma?
@@DACatface yeah the wii u hacks guide can help you migrate to tiramisu
@@DACatface I recently swapped from Haxchi to Tiramisu so I could use my Switch Pro Controller without USB
It was incredibly simple to set up, about the same or a bit easier than Haxchis' setup
One of the great things about Tiramisu IMO is that it acts a lot like Priiloader on the Wii. Remember when installing a corrupted app to your Wii U's NAND would be a garunteed brick? Not anymore. Since Payloadloader loads before the system menu, it's possible to load into a homebrew tool and delete the offending app.
The one thing I wish would become a reality is the ability to directly pair the gamepad to a PC to use as a controller with all it's abilities enabled and a second screen. (essentially a poor man's steam deck) Using moonlight on the Wii U is the only real way to do it, but the quality depends of you're local internet and it requires the console to be the client.
Highly unlikely this will happen since the tablet uses some (probably proprietary) protocol that runs in the 5GHz frequency range. You'd need a dedicated "dongle" for your PC that supports this protocol and also all kinds of drivers so the OS running on your PC recognizes the tab as a (touch) screen and input device.
@@NiyaKouya A wish is a wish, however I did see that someone was able to hack it to work on linux so it might be feasible at somepoint.

Wii U modding has come so far and I can't wait to see the insane things people do with it in the future. For example, playing Lego island on it.
Btw, you can have a separate icon for the homebrew launcher in base tiramisu. You just put a file in the install folder and use wup installer to install it. Then, you can delete the file that injects the mii maker with the homebrew launcher.
I know it'll never happen because it's a pipe dream, but I wish every console would be open source and completely unlocked. After a company stops supporting it, we should still be able to use it. I also wish that the servers would be open source so online play could be preserved. Oh well.

I had a modded Wii U that I tinkered with for a while. I personally don't remember any slow loading, I'm surprised that's thing you are experiencing. I also only used it with the gamepad, no television or anything since I didn't want to deal with that. From the initial loading to anything else it always felt relatively snappy; and I love that you can place packages of gamecube games and wii u games directly on the homescreen to launch once in the hacked environment.
Aroma sounds and looks pretty awesome.
The original Wii U operating system was notoriously slow. I remember buying on launch and waiting about 40 seconds for the powered on console to finally display the home screen.
Woo! I just got a wiiu semi recently (post tiramisu) and its been pretty nice, but aroma is exactly what I wanted (and assumed existed) for a wiiu in 2022
I have a switch, but the wiiu offers a native HDMI output for Wii games, and GameCube games, which is a decent option if you aren't searching for the very best image quality, but instead something decent, and compatible.
I'm super excited for the future of aroma, I have tons of games I want to play from GC and wiiu eras (I skipped those)
I just hate the limited RGB range on vWii (that I can't get rid off) and the increased input delay. Just noticed as I played Super Paper Mario, that I can't make certain jumps easily. Then I booted the original Wii again and was surprised at A) how much better it looked, B) how much easier the jumps were.
I mentioned this on your last Wii U video but Sega did actually region-lock light guns on the Dreamcast. Apparently it was due to some sort of fallout from the Columbine incident so if you were in the US you could only use US light guns.
Anyway I was looking at that new Tiramisu mod to replace CBHC. I just haven't attempted it yet.
Sega after doing this: "We did it, boys. Gun violence is no more!"
Are you sure it isn’t because of different frequencies of tv’s in different regions?
@@Gold171 No, this was specific coding in US releases of light gun games (e.g. Confidential Mission). They were programmed not to recognize light guns that didn't originate in the US.
Japan uses NTSC as well so their light guns should operate at the same frequency as ours (60 Hz). There would be no reason they'd be incompatible besides an arbitrary restriction (hence why my Saturn light gun from Japan works fine on my US TV).
@@SolidSonicTH Very interesting. Thanks for your response.
I bought one the other day for 99 euros, I'm very pleased with it so far, doing the Tiramisu installation was easy and I've been able to do everything you'd want to be able to do with it. So far I haven't been annoyed by it too much at all, load times appear reasonable.
Always was
EDIT: Also the Wii U currently in the year 2023 is a good system. However if you somehow got your hands on an unupdated launch Wii U it becomes increasingly obvious why this system did not take off. Booting up any game on that console took like 5 minutes to load. I might exaggerating or misremembering, but it was a LONG load time.
I've been considering modding my Wii U at some point. You may have just convinced me to finally look into the process.
My bf and I definitely found enjoyment out of my WiiU with the addition of the browser exploit mentioned. I have not looked into the modding scene for it in ages and I'm sure as time goes, the homebrew is getting better and better.
the Wii U is like a hdmi version of the Wii and few upgrades, u can get better homebrew stuff on it too! That’s what I like about the Wii U.
Thing is, the Wii U was never “bad” in the first place. Even without mods, it has a library that dwarfs most other consoles in history given that it has access to the entire retail Wii library as well as its own, PLUS all the hundreds and hundreds of games on countless different consoles it has through its eShop.
Part of the issue with that though is so much of that library is made up of games from previous consoles you could play on a system you likely already own. It’s got access to ds games, but chances are you’ve already got a ds since it’s the second best selling console of all time, and if you wanted to play Wii games or GameCube games you’d probably just be able to play them on the Wii you already own, given how well that sold too. Plus plenty of the nes and snes games were available through the Wii’s shop and the 3ds shop.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic how much backwards compatibility was available for the Wii U, it’s just that for so many people that wouldn’t be giving them something they didn’t already have.

@@ModernButSimple You watched the video, yes? Pretty much that. It's very poorly designed and doesn't seem to understand its own gimmicks. Even first-party games had issues like not giving you sound through the gamepad while you're not on your TV or having to turn on the TV while playing on the gamepad because some menu doesn't show on the gamepad screen. The advertising focused on how you can play on the gamepad, and you can't really do that with most games.
The web browser sucks and it can't read and play DVDs or anything so you can't really use it as a media device. And the fan is freaking loud, anyway.
Nintendo did a lot of nonsense with their first-party titles. They had games where the gamepad doesn't work in multiplayer for some god-awful reason, so in effect they force you to have three controllers for two players. Mario Kart for some reason maps an action like three times to various buttons on the Wiimotes while putting break and drift on the same button so Wiimote players can't breakdrift. They had several games with Miiverse integrations required to do certain things, sometimes even to 100% a game, which they now shut down. So many things about this thing just suck and I had far more trouble with it than its worth. I wish I had just emulated those games on my PC instead.
My Wii u was the first console I ever hacked. It was technically the Wii part but still I'm proud of that one. Later I hacked the Wii u part and I've probably used almost every mod under the sun for splatoon 1. So many memories.
I currently have tiramisu, but I cant wait to give aroma a shot!
Same, I will try it tomorrow
The Wii U Gamepad region locking is due to the Wi-Fi frequencies the gamepad uses to communicate with the console. Each region (and even country!) has different frequency bands allocated for Wi-Fi, and if a North American gamepad were to communicate with a Wii U in Europe, it would use a non-permitted frequency by European standards, and therefore would be illegal.
They all use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, just different channels in the 5 GHz band

Add in mods to add the GameCube circuit board back into the WiiU (yeah, the later editions of Wii removed GameCube hardware, and the WiiU doesn't have any of that)... and well, I'd be ridiculous to not move over to the WiiU. That mod would end up looking very similar to mods common in the GameGear modding community... but yeah
I think that there's some fantastic first party games for the Wii U, but the majority of the best ones have already been ported/remade for the switch and these usually turn out to be the ultimate way to play them.

I really wanted one at one point but it had already been out for a few years and there were barely any games I really wanted, or at least wanted enough to dish out $300 at the time. My 3ds played a version of most of the games I wanted and I was satisfied for the time.

Seeing where it is at now makes me very happy. I'm still not sure if I'll hold onto my hardly touched Wii U at this point, but I'll see where it goes from here!
For me I've been using my modded Wii U for playing Wii games since my original Wii can't play Wii games anymore (both Vanilla and Modded...weird story). The gamepad at least makes some games more convenient to play.
Apart from that I still haven't found a use for my modded Wii U. Everything else is either more convenient or portable than the Wii U.
Same for me here, had it modded with haxchi but never did anything on it beside doing the initial modding.
Trans rights are human ri- SIKE!
when I first took the Wii U for a spin, I thought it was kind of dumb that you couldn't use the touchpad with the original Wii menu and games.
it wasn't until a while later when I realized that it was because the Wii remote could do several types of button inputs with its cursor and a stylus can only just...tap. but now I have ALSO come up with a possible way it could be integrated (only concerning the button layouts, though, as I don't know any of the actual coding stuff), and I intend to make the suggestion to the Aroma dev(s), if they could possibly integrate such a feature.
it's honestly exciting to see what new advancements people make with relatively recently obsolete consoles, and considering the Wii U's unique Gamepad controller, a lot could really be done with it!
that actually sounds super interesting, could you tell me more about your implementation idea?
@@egon3705 to put some context/reiterate, the reason the stylus cant be used on the Wii menu as of now is because the Wii remote had SEVERAL buttons attached to the pointer + some games required having the cursor on the screen with no input, to calibrate or to make sure you aren't AFK, resulting in an annoying pop-up onscreen.
so in order to fix this, I propose that the left shoulder and trigger buttons on the gamepad should be "stylus buttons":
holding the left trigger makes tapping do B presses instead of A presses, and holding the shoulder button makes tapping not do any inputs at all. these buttons can be pressed and released mid-tap too, like you would be able to release the shoulder button mid-tap to do an A press, or vice versa to stop holding A. as for the right shoulder and trigger buttons, those would be for the nunchucks' C and Z buttons respectively.
2 would be mapped to the gamepad's B, and 1 to Y (though you would be able to change this), and the right stick would be for tilting.
finally (and this is a maybe feature because I don't know if they know how to do this yet), the seldom-used TV button would finally be given a good use: it would toggle whether the console detects your gamepad as an upright remote, or a sideways one.
it isn't perfect and kind of complicated, but I think it's a good start. let me know what you think :]
Some games that can be played 100% with a regular controller or Wii mote still force pairing of a tablet. Also why do some games only let you use a pro controller and not a classic controller? The only difference is the clicky thumbsticks wich you could just use the 1&2 buttons for on the Wii mote itself.
Yah its about time we fot some detailed documentation for mods and plugins.
A modded WiiU with Nintendon't is my favourite console of all time. No joke.
Same, and full Wii backwards compatability, Virtual Console + Injects and a slew of emulation options and other great homebrew apps and games make it like the ultimate console.
Hopefully someday the WiiU gets something like PriiLoader for the original Wii. Just a simple text based menu where you can load any installed title, load from the disc drive, directly launch homebrew channel, etc.
Ive been regretting selling my wiiiu for a switch for years now it was an emulation box heaven
Bro the Arthur "binky" episode is a throwback! Can't think of a specific time but I'm sure I've had the same thought before.
It's basically a chain of inconveniences on something that could have been a great console
I bought one June of 2020. I love it. I got it hooked up next to the Switch & the Wii.
4:41 honestly I wouldn't have been surprised if Nintendo had bound each tablet to each console
the miis with the speech bubbles, is the Wara Wara plaza, and you used to be able to change the icons, but now you can’t due to Miiverse being shut down, but the speech bubbles used to say stuff from people from that said community
1:19 Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U.
You got to make a video about the old Shrek, you've gotten in touch with old creators of games and so much more you have to be the one to find the old I feel good Shrek footage
The Wii U was great
When we first got one, we got the Loz windwaker console and it was magical being able to play it without a TV, I really loved it
I should show my husband this video just so he'll be sad he sold his Wii U like 6 years ago xD
I liked the Wii U at the time... For me 3D World WAS a main Mario that actually pleased me more than Galaxy 2. I loved the integration of the Miiverse in the game. I loved Nintendo communication at the time between Reggie and Iwata. It was a comfy environment.
The console didn't had a lot of game but i loved them all. From Wonderful 101 to Project Zero 5 and even strange stuff like Tokyo Mirage Session was like the first Atlus RPG with actual level design in the dungeon ! Before Persona 5 ! Of course, there were Nintendo games like Splatoon, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8 which had awesome DLCs and Smash Bros. To this day, i wonder where the small Nintendo games like NES REmix or Pushmo went... Because on the Wii U they were very cool ! I remember even setting my Wii U in a train station to continue Bayonetta 2 at the time... It was fun !
Nowadays unfortunately, the stick of my gamepad is loose and as the video mention it, replacing it seems like a nightmare. Most of the game except some exception like Xenoblade X is either being replaced on the Switch with better evaluation than their initial release ( The famous "funky kong effect".... Thanks Donkey KOng Tropical Freeze ) or just a follow up that is very close to the original Wii U game and replace it entirely. ( Splatoon 2, Smash BRos... I would argue Mario Kart 8 is doing that little by little )
So yeah, the mod is good but... I already have a Wii and all the console from Nintendo that i need unfortunately so that mod would be wasted on me....
enthusiastic
The Wii U is a great emulation station, trumped only be the Xbox Series S, and even then it can be a toss up when you consider the latter still struggles with some GC/Wii games that a Wii U wouldn't. It's also one of, if not the best way to emulate DS due to the gamepad.
I wish I could go to the alternative dimension where the Saturn, the Dreamcast, and the Wii U didn't self destruct from their poor leadership and, therefore, see how amazing they all could have been. The Saturn would have better 3D hardware and no early launch that rug-pulled its developers and retailers. The Dreamcast would have a dual analog controller, slightly less focus on the 90s arcade, and slightly more focus on the next decade of game design. And the Wii U would simply have a better name and better marketing. The Wii U should have been so much more. I still play COD Black Ops II and Ghosts online with the Zapper shell. I love this console.
My jaw dropped lower than the floor when I turned my Wii U on and it said an UPDATE WAS AVAILABLE!
Yeah came out not too long ago
I have 3 Wii U's and love them to death... It came out right when my daughters were 7, 5, and 3... We played it non stop for YEARS... Modding them later opened it up BIG TIME...
Helpful Tip: If you mod it, on the Wii U AND vWIi side, use a tool that makes the Wii/GameCube harddrive invisible... It'll stop the Wii U from telling you to format the drive everytime to load into the Wii U front-end ( or just hold the B button on startup...)
One of your videos was partially what convinced me to buy a used Wii U in February of 2022.
I got the white one because I preferred the aesthetic; the console looks more like the original Wii and the white GamePad matched the UI better and generally looked a bit nicer imo.
I do not regret the decision in the slightest! I have an attachment to this cheery little console that I can't describe, even though I never owned one prior to its discontinuation.
This Wii U is a great homebrew/softmodding machine to play around with! I also love the GamePad's second screen, and it is integrated well in certain titles, like Splatoon and MK8.
Speaking of Splatoon, the Wii U got me into it! I figured I'd buy Splatoon 1 first so I could experience the campaign before buying 2, no regrets here either.
I hate Nintendo Network ID though. I won't be telling the full story here, but its pathetic limitations have put me through nightmares on the 3DS side of things.
In conclusion, I love the Wii U. Nintendo failed the Wii U with its garbage tier marketing and other missteps...
Also 5:47 Miiverse posts and activity used to be there. This dumb stuff was to replace that stuff around when Miiverse shut down.
*also **6:05** you can hold down a certain button to access vWii from boot i forget*
I own the Wii U now.. This one is a used one I got a few years ago but I bought a white Wii U when it first came out.. You could post to MiiVerse, Video Chat with friends, Message Friends, send Friend request by names and friend codes, free online service.. I hated Nintendo ended all those services.. even the damn messaging.. I can't message a friend to get them to play a game with me?? If Nintendo gave the Wii U a different name it would have did numbers.. Unbelievable numbers..
How is it worst selling?!
It has amazing features.
You can draw on the stylus.
You can play amazing games on it. Like Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Hyrule Warriors, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, and many more.
Plus you can use the Wii u game pad for star throwing.
And you can even play with the game pad while someone else’s watching TV.
It had terrible marketing and you forgot Xenoblade x my second favorite game on the console
Boring
Worst selling. As in it didn't sell a lot.
I recently bought a Wii U and modded it. Haven't done much with it yet but I'm loving the developments in the modding community. Might give Aroma a try. Good vid 👌
so basically i could play wii u, wii, and gamecube games natively? for free essentially?
@@ItsOver9000Productions well legally u have to own the games u want to play but yes, the wii u is the console to get if u want that kind of versatility.
3:06 up until i got a gamecube adapter, wed always fight over who got to use the gamepad and wii pro controller for smash and who had to use the wii motes. i was used to the gamecube from brawl and could not use a wii mote so id usually use my 3ds with the weird controller feature.
i played mine 2013-2018 cuz smash bros was and is honestly the only i game i couch play idk none of my friends really wanna do anything else.
the wii was my early childhood and the wii u was my late childhood early teens
i will say nintendo land is a good game and i stand by that.
edit: wow literally right after i mod my wii u
Are you joking now you made me have that Arthur song in my head when I hear wii U
As one of the kids who had the WiiU, yes we fought over it. My siblings would have to pry it from my dead cold hands before they got to play as Mario in Mario Chase.
I love my Wii U, I soldered 2 ssd's into the usb ports, hacked it put a 1tb sd card in and put the whole libraries of Gamecube/Wii/U and now it's an awesome all in one console.
why solder the ssd?
@@skumbino I made the ssds internal and there's not a whole lot of space inside the case, so I took them and the usb to sata adapters out of the casings and soldered it all together to save space.
How dare you remind me of that Arthur song, the sudden nostalgia jolt will haunt me for weeks
That arthur bit brought back so many memories goddam ty
I had a Wii U before the Switch was released but I later sold it once the Switch came out. Only a few days ago, I actually bought another Wii U because I wanted to play my Wii games in higher quality. When the console arrives, I'll definitely be modding it like I did with my old Wii but now it seems I'll have even more options!
Busted out my WiiU after my kids saw the Mario movie. Lucky that the mod is super easy now to implement! Very interested in exploring what else the system can do now!
in addition to the holding B method other commenters mention, there's the quick menu on the gamepad which you can use to boot directly to the vWii
The best feature is Wii backwards compatibility which allows Wii games to be played on a modern TV with minimal fuss while also enhancing the image quality slightly
Just recently got a wii u for the first time just to play Xenoblade X and modded it just last week. It is one of the BEST way to play DS games. Back when the wii u released I really wanted one, but never had the money for it. Getting it way later, though, its a lot better than I thought it was. Modded; modding makes it so much better. Its like the perfect retro console because it can also play DS and Wii games which have very specific control schemes.
Love your videos. This is one of the few channels left i actually enjoy to watch.
3:37 haha, the pink guy reference. Nice touch
as someone who's never owned a Wii or Wii U, I'm definitely planning to get me a wii u at some point, with the combined wii and wii u library there's a ton of great games to play and it can't really be emulated well because of the specific hardware like wii motes
Ive had a hacked Wii U for YEARS and i love it! it makes it for the best companion to a switch! :)
On my Wii U i have Nintendont set up as a .WAD channel on the Wii so i can just go to the Wii menu, click the GC logo and it boots up Nintendont with all my GC games!
People trash the WiiU but I have a lot of memories using the backwards compatible Wii feature than I do a lot of times with the switch. The Wii/WiiU had a massive library of really charming and iconic games, while the switch only has a few Nintendo titles that are a few years old (Zelda, Odyssey, Smash, Animal Crossing, Metroid); most of its library is composed of Indie Games. Let's not forget that most of the bangers were released 5 years ago like Zelda and Mario. So I guess I had a lot of great memories with the Wii U/Wii over the switch because they had a lot more exclusives and charm, with the switch they maybe have 6 Nintendo games that were good, but at that point why not just own a PC. Nintendo has lost their sense of identity I think; they want to become others consoles with none of the sparks that they had before, so it's a question of why not just get other consoles. I still remember playing New Super Mario, Mario Galaxy, Mario kart, Punch Out Wii, Guitar Hero, Twilight Princess, Olympic Games, good Mario Party, Windwaker, Smash Brawl, and even the Snes games you could purchase on the wii shop for like a dollar and own forever that you didn't have to have a subscription to get. Also the Wii /Wii U had like hundreds of these weird-ass five dollar games you could buy for a five year old at your local gamestore to keep them entertained like Shrek Carnival or some shit, kind of charming in a way.
I got Tiramisu in January when I had nothing to do because my brother had COVID. It was a fun experience and the first time I had modded a Wii U. I had only modded my 3DS.
14:05got me 😂 Matt I really enjoy every of your Videos. Please make more content for a lot more years! I'm always happy to see that there is a new Video out from you ✌🏻️
I always thought the Wii U was 2 consoles because you need the Wii U game pad to power up the console but you need the console to put the disk in
There is a way to swap the screens in the home menu. Press X on the gamepad or 1 (or 2, I don’t remember) on a connected Wiimote, you can get the gamepad screen on the tv, and vise-versa.
I bought a refurb Wii U in 2014 specifically to play BOTW, but it kept getting delayed. Now, the Wii U actually had a great first party library. As proven by how well all the Switch ports have done. But IMO, the problem with the Iwata era of Nintendo was having gimmicks lead game design. Worked for the Wii and DS, but it wasn't sustainable. The tablet didn't make the games play better. Again as proven by the Switch ports, where that functionality got removed. Marketing for the console was also really weird. Not only due to the confusion over the name, but also that ads were often hokey, heavily targeted at kids, and rarely featured any actual gameplay or showed off the console's unique features. There were also substantial teething problems. There was an article on Eurogamer back during the Wii U's life where an anonymous Western dev spilled the beans about its challenges. How programming was difficult, made all the more difficult by lack of English language technical support. How the console was deliberately made small and underpowered to not be intrusive for parents. How hardware and major software changes were still being made right up to the 11th hour. Whole thing was a hot mess right from the start. This is why you saw a huge shift with the Switch back to something that was more traditional, and used marketing (which actually showed gameplay this time) targeted at young adults.
