    Mario is a plumber. That is why nintendo doesn't tolerate any leaks at all.

    Amazing that basically one disgruntled employee ruined an entire studio, a studio that didn't want to single out anyone and instead took the bullet at the time. Cool.

    • @Blastros01
      @Blastros01 6 лет назад +82

      SlackerKite this is the worst part. They claim that they wouldn't fire the employee and didn't want to call them out yet the employee harmed the company so much. That's basically a parasite mentality. It would have been better if they had discribed their perceived mistreatment in detail but it's probably a higher expected check or something minor. This is why some people are "over qualified". You might be great but if you're prone to being disgruntled because what you think you're worth and sabotage the company then you're a liability and not worth the experience you bring.

      No dude, the problem is the self-righteous asshole who knows full well the damage he could do to the company and to his co-workers careers and does it anyway out of spite. If he was in any way decent or professional he should of approached his bosses and talked to them about the conditions or gathered other co-workers who felt the same to get some backing - the dude's a nutsack.

      TheMindOfThomas No he's right, it's not ironic. Most people think irony (specifically situational irony) is something that is unexpected, surprising, coincidental, hypocritical, contradictory, or even fitting, but aren't the correct definitions. The definition is: an incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result. The example that OP made doesn't fit this definition at all. So many people have trouble with this word but try to act like they know to try to seem intelligent.

    • @KingTaltia
      @KingTaltia 6 лет назад +314

      Well, yeah, it's why the Hype trains for so many of their games go so well. Smash bros games always have their fans excited beyond means during the lead-up tot heir games, and the pokemon fanbase clamors over a new entry to the main series. Hype is a very delicate thing that NEEDS to be managed, like a High Pressure water line, these "leaks" hinder the ability to handle the pressure effectively, leading to a trickle or a torrent that can damage something, A game just falls off the radar if too low, but if too high it becomes No Man's Sky, or Duke Nukem Forever.

    • @CottidaeSEA
      @CottidaeSEA 6 лет назад +40

      I think it depends on what is leaked, but the problem is hype like lightningbro mentioned. It's a blessing and a curse. While hype is good for publicity, the problem is when expectations are set too high as a result. Nintendo wants to carefully show things so that it's in a more controlled environment. Otherwise it could simply be too volatile.

    man that really sucks. while its interesting to see that this might have been the reason splatoon was created in the first place, its just sucks to see this company lose its big potential project just due to one person leaking some details. that one person literally screwed over a lot of people in that company. It's a shame because I would have loved to see how this concept could have been fleshed out because the world already started to sound pretty great. I am glad though that all of those leaks back in 2011 are finally fully explained, cause I remember when those details first surfaced.

      You can never know that though. Keep in mind that early concept of Splatoon started out with Rabbits. A lot of things can change in a 3-4 year development cycle. The big takeaway is that it's great that we have Splatoon but it's shitty that some ass clown went and blew a whole studio out of the water and jeopardized peoples' livelihoods over a leak.
      The early concepts are interesting and robots wasn't a bad idea. who knows what this IP could of been under Nintendo's guidance. Especially when it wasn't considered to be multiplayer.

    It really is heart breaking for me that HighVoltage could've worked with Nintendo similar to how Rare did back in the day. HighVoltage really could've revolutionized the way aiming with a gun worked in video games. Seriously. The controls for the conduit games were stellar. Almost better than main stream titles like Halo and Call of Duty to some degree.

    • @Compucles
      @Compucles 6 лет назад +1

      The Halo games never had motion controls, so of course the Conduit games controlled better; but yeah it really is a highly underrated duology (especially the second game), and it's a real shame that the story will always end on that massive cliffhanger.

    The fact that a decade after the fact the leaker is still to much of a coward to take responsibility for his own actions shows he knows he is in the wrong. If he's willing to say it was due to poor work conditions, what was the plan after the leak? How did illegally leaking information help your life, or the lives of your coworkers? I'm sure there's an element of moral responsibility to sources, but reporting the truth is about holding people accountable for their actions.

    • @wonderkabuse
      @wonderkabuse 6 лет назад

      Yeah like literally nothing changed. It's not like the person had no examples of 'how it's done'. You just tell Kotaku or whatever outlet willing to listen details about the working conditions of the workplace and how bad it is and they do the rest for you. Blowing up one of the rare times Nintendo actually CONTACTS you to contract and fund your game to stick it to management was dumb as hell.
      Nothing got better, people got laid off and it's horribly crippled the studio since. Insane.

  • @fireaza
    @fireaza 6 лет назад +50

    In the end, it was probably for the best. An original game like Splatoon doesn't get made by a studio with years of experience making shooters, it gets made by people who are inexperienced. Their inexperience means they're more open to trying concepts that would never be explored in a traditional shooter.

High Voltage isn't exactly a standout studio, and The Conduit probably wouldn't even have been recognized if not for the novelty of it being on the Wii; there is no way whatever they would have made could have measured up to what Splatoon ended up being.

    I feel sorry for what happened to the company due to the leak incident, but at the same time, I can't help but be happy because we may have gotten a generic water gun shooter instead of the all-ink-one Splatoon had the project gone through (not assuming that the robot game is going to turn out bad, but I believe it would just be another shooter with a more unique setting).
    If that robot game gets made and sells well, Nintendo would stick to that setting. On the other hand, if it fails, Nintendo may be afraid to try to revive the idea again. Either way, I'd say there's a very high chance that Splatoon will never come to be if that robot game gets made.

    This is a real eye opener for me. As much as I love Splatoon, it really is a shame that such a humble studio like High Voltage lost an opportunity like this. It's especially depressing since they haven't released anything that original since 2011 besides some VR and mobile stuff.

    That robot game looks way more appealing than Splatoon to me. It would have been amazing to see it finished and I got excited throughout the whole video until I forgot it was discussing a cancelled video game. It may have even helped the Wii U better since those games were really starting to peak around that time. Whether or not it could have saved it is unknown, but it may have sold just a few million more since it's essentially a Splatoon--esque game coming a few years earlier. Besides the concept itself, people were surprised about a Nintendo shooting game, so it may have done pretty well.
    I would say I want it to resurface someday, but there is just no way it could do well now with Splatoon existing. But, Nintendo has made multiple platformers before, so I do not see any reason why they could not make more shooter games. And this robot game should really be salvaged for the future. Funny that a game about water was ruined by leaks.
    These guys would have been fun to play in Super Smash Bros.

    Knowing what I do about many of the terrible working conditions in the game industry, I'm gonna side with the employee. I think the fact none of their peers ratted them out probably says a lot more about the situation than anything else, consider that it was likely a sentiment not held by just one dude if the working conditions really were poor. Consider also that companies have many layers, and whoever nintendo spoke to was probably insulated from the lower ones by a department manager, and a department manager who sees their workers struggle with bad working conditions every day is likely not gonna say shit when his boss comes knocking and demands he throw someone under the bus, and their boss probably doesn't know the department well enough to start properly snooping. This is especially worth considering if someone had held erasing evidence.
    And no, you can't just go "get another job", it's not that simple with careers where you actually have to WORK for a position. Moving companies can often mean moving long distances from home, or taking a job with significantly less pay, or losing your company position and having to climb back up. That can take years, by the way, and usually you need to have work lined up ahead of time before jumping ship. These are things you won't see advertised randomly because even suggesting you're unhappy with your working conditions in public spaces is gonna risk your career, but know that a lot of voiceless little people suffer for the plastic disks we waste hours of our lives on in ways they shouldn't have to because this industry is rotten to the core and way too many entitled consumers would rather blame the little guys when shit goes tits up instead of direct their anger at the top players like Dear Old Nintendo.

    We had also a paint based shooter concept at Disney to make a game for everyone but we stopped it because it did not go anywhere. Just not good enough, the regular more guns, more types of liquid crap that anyone can list while sitting in the toilets for 10 minutes. The real breakthrough is from Nintendo. A typical horizontal solutions, something that solves many many problems all at once. Diving into the paint to hide, recharge, go faster, climb walls, go under fences and so on. This is real genius. Once they got that, they develop characters to fit the gameplay, 'humans' to 'squids', not the other way around. They are just so f...g good.

      The leaker single handedly disrupted/destroyed the lives of dozens of his fellow co-workers over a personal issue he had with upper management; I wouldn't consider that level of malevolent behavior as some minor transgression. Video game enthusiasts, game studios and publishers should relish the opportunity to learn the identity of these types of people because all they do is cause chaos, destroy once in a lifetime opportunities, and worst of all, ROB CONSUMERS of potentially great experiences.

    • @Poefred
      @Poefred 6 лет назад +3

      Sure but do we know what the working condition issues were? Especially when you're a smaller company about to work with Nintendo with a new IP, if it worked out well all their problems could have been solved. Hypothetically of course, like I said I don't know what the problems actually were.

    • @PrincessFelicie

      I don't know either, but hoping for daddy Nintendo to just swoop in and fix all the problems was probably not a good strategy either.

    • @Poefred
      @Poefred 6 лет назад +1

      I guess it just depends where the issues were coming from. If it was a result of being a small company that's been struggling then sticking it out to get your big break working with Nintendo should have fixed that. If it's an issue with how the place is ran...even that could very well change with success but they could just talk about it probably.

    • @PrincessFelicie
      @PrincessFelicie 6 лет назад +1

      The DS and 3DS is two screens to yourself and nobody else. The Wii U gave one player a personal screen/controller and left others to utilize a bigger TV screen. It was an experimentation in asymmetrical gameplay, though hardly the first and only time they did such a thing (various 1v3 Mario Party minigames come to mind).

      No that's batshit insane, if you have a problem with a company bring up your complaints, don't extort the company threatening not just higher up but also your co-workers. The leaker was an asshole.

      Sure, if you have unsatisfactory working conditions, instead of acting like a normal human being and bringing up your misgivings with your work environment to superiors, sabotage their entire business and by extension the livelihoods of all your peers, friends, and co-workers :))))))
