you and Christian greico absolutely turned me on to diamond braid at the straight up fishing seminar. by far the smoothest and toughest braid I've used. I put on suffix 832 the day before I went to the seminar and put the braid from the goody bag on another combo of the same set up and the difference is insane. it's like silk vs burlap to the touch the casting distance is easily 25% further and it HOLDS UP.

I use nothing but braid. Usually 15# and a 8-12# mono or flouro leader. I also tend to use a medium rod, where most would use a MH. Also crankbait rods on squarebills, cranks, and some topwater. I get much better feel and rod flexes instead of line stretching.

    Good stuff!
I agree on mono or fluoro being better for those, with my limited combos, running leader has worked out best for me personally. Some of my rods, primary chatter bait rod for example, will have braid to 20ft of fluoro leader for some stretch.

I agree with you. Lines are situation and lure-specific. I use fluoro and braid for lures. I get good hooksets and lose fewer fish with fluoro. Braid is for in weeds and musky fishing. I find fluoro much better for many situations I fish.

I tend to run braid to flouro on all my combos. I’ve done them every way and would have nothing but problems with straight flouro so I found braid to leader seems to work best for me personally. I stopped running straight braid for the most part though because it’s just too much sometimes and when u get snagged it’s too hard to snap the line I used to just say f it and cut it lol. Ur definitely spot on with straight braid to spinnerbaits though I’ve done that too often and would have the hardest time getting them to run right and not get tangled like braid and spinnerbaits love to get all twisted up so I don’t do that anymore. I’ve also came down a lot on the strength of my braid I normally just stick to 20-30lb now there’s really no need for 65 or 50 even when frogging or fishing the ca delta. Anyways, ur right about straight braid to any of those baits but I say braid to leader is perfectly acceptable as well lol. Also, the 13 fishing jabber jaws r great baits and look great. 13 fishing doesn’t get the recognition they deserve their hard baits r definitely high quality and have some of the best paint jobs and the hooks they use r just right.

Fishing down south in muddy waters of Mississippi rivers i had always run 20# braid especially fishing coastal waters (due to redfish and other). Recently in the past 3 years i started fishing clear water lakes like Pickwick. Well i wasn't catching many. So i added fluro to a few reels and found my hook up ratio on spinner bait, square bills, and chatterbaits increased 10 fold and i also learned the drop shot MY FAVORITE. I do think that with braid i was just pulling the bait out their mouth. I am glad I am not the only one who feels that way. Thanks for the tips tricks and advice

I don’t really disagree with you, but I will say this about snagging.
Getting snagged on a crank (or anything) with high test braid you’ll stretch the hooks out not break off, which I prefer losing terminal tackle vs a whole lure. Happened the other day actually. I broke my leader off and had no replacements, got snagged and stretched a hook. Just had to replace the hook later, kept my $7 lure though.
Also, the 8 strand braid is much better. You get a smoother line. In tree climbing we have 12,16,24 strand, the 24 strand is smooth as butter, and so that reflects the same for 4 strand vs 8 strand braid. More strands means smoother jacket, which means farther casts and quieter operation.

I feel like many folks just go with whatever they hear for years and years , to each their own but i put braid on every reel always and have never gotten less bites from it or seen any negatives. I could haul a tree up if i need to and never lose a hooked fish due to line breaking. Same with lures ..anything i can use a snap swivel for im going to and have never caught less fish than the guy next to me even if it loses action. Spinner baits and worms and flukes is about the only time i tie straight to a lure just to br weedless. I have 5 poles but still keep a few with snap swivels to change baits in a few seconds and can usually get in multiple casts while a buddy is still tying something on. Almost always agree with your comments but have to say I have used braid of some type for over 20 years with my favorite of all time bait, the spinner bait. I know most will say to use flouro but braid has worked for me with some slight adjustments, slightly looser drag and a little softer rod. Never felt like I lost a fish due to line but I don't fish in the land of giants either and never use braid over 30#. Works for me.

The reason for the crankbaits not working on braid seems pretty simple. If the fish is skin hooked a line with a little give will put less stress on that skined hook. Whereas braid, with no stretch at all, is going to put maximum pressure on that hooking point and pull the hook free.
    Great insights!

OK so maybe I'm old school, well yes I'm old. 54, Just a one or two day Monday through Friday and one day on the weekends kind of fishing guy. Grew up in NJ fishing with my dad and his friend for stripers, bluefish, fluke and flounder. ( and yes there is a difference ) there was nothing but Mono..... down and dirty. Then came fluorocarbon, and it was a great improvement. In my opinion your rod set up is the most important. I moved to Missouri about 20 years ago and got back into fresh water fishing. Its simple... Fluorocarbon sinks, thats for any thing under the water, mono floats top water. Rod if it has treble hooks, ST Croix Mojo Bass Glass rod. Yes I know Glass but..... it is very Parabolic in the bend it loads up great and keeps them light wire treble hooks stuck. Anything with single hook, Jig, chatter bait, buzz bait, Spinner bait you get where im going i use a Shimano bait caster Medium heavy Moderate to fast and all on Fluorocarbon, Or maybe even copolymer. Braid if for the nasty stuff. Pads heavy grass and monster rocks ETC... But if i ony knew 1/2 of what you forgot already id be such a better fish catching machine.

Love your content. Wish you had put this out yesterday. I'm a bank fisherman. I got a new square bill and tied it on this morning. 20lb braid. 2nd fish was bout a 3 pounder and it was skin hooked lost at my feet. Lol You're a pro and I am not. You and others have taught me so much. Thank you and keep on keeping on.

Crank baiting with braid is my favorite. If you want some stretch learn to tie a fg knot and use a leader.

You can use braid for crankbait if you had a good crankbait rod.

I have used exclusivly braid since spider wire came out. I like it because it doesnt hold memory that causes knots. I use mono leader for my crappie and bait and weight setups were the line isnt moving to give it a little camoflage. Do to lack of stretch when using chatter and spinner baits it gives me a positive set without having to jerk the thing through and out of the fishes mouth. I always switch out the cheap hook on cheap lures. I find the more expensive lures have thicker and stronger hooks. But each of us have our own opinions and people should do as they want and not follow anyone on youtube. Heck people were using braided line long before monofilament came around as fishing line as we know it now wasnt invented until plastics.

Please don’t tell the fish in Oklahoma, because I mainly use braid, and each if those lures work extremely well. I use Rapala Sufix 832 40 lbs equivalent to10 lb mono. My urban water fishing spot is loaded with moss. I got tired of losing big bass in the moss. So I went over to braid and it solved my issue. Also, for chatter bait, I kept losing fish, so I use a treble hook as my trailer. That too eliminated lose of fish. I don’t fish lakes, were I can see where your coming from, however in heavy mossy water, I will always prefer braid.

Braid is a nightmare on walking baits and poppers when tied directly. Also anytime you are flipping wood jig or texas rig braid can dig in to the wood and even if you are a guy that is a braid to floro the knot is never a perfect length from lure. Too close and the knot gets jammed into the wood too long and the knot is always messing with you when you flip/pitch.

Illusion is really good mono. I used this fall fishing around oyster bars and barnacles. It’s much better in those situations than fluorocarbon

I also don’t use braid on top water walking spooks or poppers. Braid gets wet and always ends up messing up the walking motion of the treble hook top water baits. Straight fluorocarbon for me. Braid flipping and pitching and a frog that’s about it lol

I use straight braid on all shallow diving crankbaits. Set the drag right and you will never have an issue. One of the greatest crankbait fisherman ever, David fritz, use nothing but braid on all of his crankbaits! Fishing cover the bait gets down quicker with braid being there's no stretch vs fluoro with the stretch the bait is gone from the cover by the time is gets down! Just what works for me!

Can I use braid with a leader?

  • @ThomasShue
    @ThomasShue 8 месяцев назад

Braid with a spinner works fine but you have to prep R-Bend Spinner baits like he shows. Just use braid to wrap a heavy loop to change that R bend into a closed loop. Then the bait will not bend like he shows. Also braid definitely is way more sensitive and you can feel every limb bump, fall bump, and or when a fish strikes the baits

I've been phasing out braid altogether on my combos, mostly because I'm tired of dealing with leaders (never used straight braid before). I'm going straight mono on everything now.

    • @austinh9389

Use a mono leader trilene xl 8 to 15 lbs depending, the stretch is your friend and the fish dont see any difference between mono and fluorocarbon its just marketing bs. Mono is more abrasion resistant and better knot strength as well. And wayyy cheaper lol.
