- Today I'm taking you through whether or not YOU should use braided fishing line. I've seen a lot of opinions out there. However, I'll go through some facts about braid and what it REALLY is, the advantages/disadvantages of braid, and how I use braid in my bass fishing arsenal. I'll discuss brands, give you a closer look, and talk about things that most RUclips videos simply skip over!

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
Understatement of the year: Debo: "I've got a few different rods and reels." 🤣
My wife asked me the other day, "How many fishing rods do I have"? I told her about 12 that I actually use. She asked why I need so many and I asked her, "How many shoes do you have?"
I use to have just my spinning rod and my fly rod. Then they were stolen last salmon season. Now I have 8 spinning combos, and 4 fly rod set ups.. they all have a purpose, or just feel damn good
This helps cause there is so many combinations of line and lures a person could go crazy trying to figure them out. This takes a lot of the guess work out of the equation .
These types of videos helped me a ton when I was getting into fishing last year. Definitely a lot of good points. One word of caution with thinner braid would be that it can cut through skin pretty easy. Use caution when pulling knots tight or landing fish. Another great viDebo bud!!
YES
Man it hurts. Cut myself a few times on 15-20lb braid. It’s the main thing I don’t like about braid, although I will still use it.
@@Howwerelivingfishing no joke! I hadn't messed with braid much until last year. I put 9lb braid on a spinning reel and learned quickly to be extra careful.

I use braid on every reel I own as a main line. The distance you get is not even close to using all Mono/Fluoro. Now it hurt me today at the pier, I lost a very big Snook, at least 35-40 inches, because my leader wasn't long enough and it cut my braid on the pier piling! Thanks Debo!
Braid on a spinning set up is definitely the way to go !! Another great informative video
Here in the Netherlands it’s easy… if it’s Pike, Zander or Perch always braid. All you need to think about is is if you wanna use a pike proof leader and the line thickness.
It’s always nice to get more info on different gear and such. I learned a few things. THANKS DEBO Keep it up!
Good reminders! These types of videos helped me out a ton when I was really getting into fishing, especially with baitcasters
Definitely do more of these videos. I’ve only been fishing regularly for a few years and it’s always great to see the logic behind what other folks are doing and why. I just recently went to braided lines and am still feeling out the details.
Love your content!
Old school Debo, just sitting down and giving a master class. Love it.
Debo, you’re info videos are the best. I have learned a ton. Started using braid to fluoro after watching videos just like this from you. On the braid train & not looking back. I love it. Keep up the awesome work. It is always appreciated 👊
Braid to a fluorocarbon leader is my go to for spinning reel set ups! Absolutely love it!
I think this type of video is very helpful for new anglers they sure helped me a bunch the last few years. Nicely done as always Debo
These types of videos are perfect; keep them coming! I use braid to a leader for my finesse fishing and straight braid for frogging.
Yes, these are a great, helpful type of video. Please continue! Just starting to use braid (mainly finesse spinning setups) and so far believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages! Thanks for all the great videos!
Thanks Debo! This helps a ton. Years ago I fished a lot of crappie and small mouth and all I had was a Shimano Sedona 2500 with 30lb braid and a flouro leader on a drop shot. Only recently getting into bait casting and am very interested in frogging. This is very helpful indeed!
Always great content!! Just wanna say thank you for sharing your experience with us. It makes a world of difference.
I found this very helpful and would like to see more of these type of videos. I started using braid on some rods. I kept losing bass on one rod which had mono and was action was moderate with to much stretch in the line and action in rod. I’m a new viewer and have spent lots of time watching and learning. Thanks for your content.
Yes Debo, this type of video help people out. Me personally, I used to run braid to leader on all of my combos but have started using straight flourocarbon on a few this year. I think braid is great for beginners to learn to cast with
Yessir very helpful. Fishing line is the biggest headache for me . So many options it's overwhelming. Thanks for the awesome content. Love all your vids
Basically the same way I run my setups, but great content and glad to see your ideas and opinions on the topic. Thanks Debo!
Yes, very helpful for someone that's fished forever. Nice to have others opinions and you learn new things from others that can help.
Love this type of video. I started with baitcast reels during the pandemic. I have tried several things, but at this point I have braid to fluorocarbon on all my setup (both spinning and baitcast) except my frog rod. It works for me and I have confidence in it at this point. My favorite braid is the Suffix 832, but I recently tried the Strike King tour braid (found it on sale at the DFW Scheels). I have it on my spinning set ups. I like the way it casts and I love the suction cup on the spool. It makes getting it on the reel a snap!
So wise Debo. Thanks for all the pros and cons for each line. Great examples too.
Debo this was excellent I fished for years and you can always use a refresher on pros and cons of anything I think the video is great 👍🏿
These types of videos help the beginner and the rest of us too. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy all your videos. Thanks
This is great content. I personally use braid most of the time, as the sensitivity is unsurpassed and it does not have issues with memory. I typically run a 4 foot fluorocarbon leader tied on with a uni/jam knot. I’m sure that there are disadvantages to my system, but it gets me fish in the boat. Keep up the great work Debo!
I enjoyed this video a lot and good information. I’m newer to FW fishing but have experience with brackish/SW. I’ve only dealt with braid on spinning tackle. I’ve got the baitcast but haven’t spoiled it yet so it’s good to know what a beginner should try.
Love this type of video Debo. Thanks for a great breakdown man!
I only have 3 rods right now and use straight braid on my non-cranking rod. I mainly use moving lures and don't worry so much about fish being line shy on a swim jig. I also only have the 3 reels so I want to be versatile and switch to frog fishing on that rod when the mood suits me. My spinning setup is actually also straight 10lb braid. I'm not a big believer (yet) in fish caring about seeing the line. I should try a leader, though, and see how that goes.
Literally the best fishing channel on RUclips, just got into using a baitcaster and fishing for bigger game fish, I used to only ice fish, and this channel has helped more than anything! Would love to see a video on leaders! Wire, fluoro, etc.. keep it up dude! Thanks!
I have recently started fishing more braid to leader, and its helped a lot. Thank you for the advise. So far j have 2 of my 5 rods braid to leader.
This is for sure a helpful format!
An explainer on power and action of rods would be huge.
Nice vid. I'm just getting started and man, all of the options for baits, lines, rigs and techniques can be overwhelming. Keep em coming Debo.
Thanks for the video. These types of videos are really helpful in trying to figure out gear, especially for us newbies.
That was awesome. I don't have a ton of experience with braid. I do have it on my spinning reels with a leader. Just put some on a casting reel. You are correct about the sensitivity. What a difference.
"A few different rods and reels" 🤣👏
thanks Debo since I started watching you this is how i have my set ups
i caught my first Bass this year using braid to a leader on a Jig
I am a braid to leader fisherman on all my combos (baitcaster and spinning). I have just found over time this has become cheaper and easier for me to use. A spool of good quality fluro is not cheap! Yes, I love your thoughts and ideas on set-up and tackle.
Great video. I've been using braid to leader for a couple of years (I'd go straight braid for frogging if I did much of it) and the big difference is casting. I'm using 20lb Power Pro on my spinning gear with an 8lb fluro leader most of the time, and I use 50-80lb braid on my baitcasters. Always nice to hear what you're doing is similar to someone else and for similar reasons.
These help me a lot. Just gives me more ideas and things to try to catch more fish.
As a new fisherman I found this video very helpful. I only used braid once while saltwater fishing and I can attest to braid snapping and watching a rig fly into the ocean.
Thanks man, just got into baitcaster reels, and this helped. Also braid on spinning reel always here.
Keep up the vids, your tips and gear reviews have helped me improve my results bass fishing.
Very much like these videos. Been out of fishing for about 15 years so much stuff has changed. Nice learning about stuff before just throwing money at it.
Debo, The video help me alot to understand about when and where to use braid. Thanks alot!
Great video and very informative always appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share keep ‘em coming 🎣🎣🔥🔥
Definitely enjoy this type of informative video. Keep up the great work sir!!!!!
I think you should keep doing these types of videos Debo. It’s good to hear both the advantages and disadvantages of a certain piece of gear or technique, etc.
I also laughed to myself when you said “I’ve got a few different rods and reels.” 🤣
Very helpful in that I have fished 55 years. My experience with braid has been impossible birdsnests! I’ll try it within your suggestions. Thx Debo. Go Hawks!
Great viDebo. I’m currently using braid to a leader on all my setups simply because I don’t get out that often (2-3 times a month) right now and I want to avoid line memory. If I ever get to the point where I’m out 1-2 a week I’ll consider going straight fluoro on a baitcaster setup. Definitely helped me to start with the Trilene XL when I started using a baitcaster… never had to cut out a backlash.
Totally helpful. Gonna start using mono instead of flouro for the topwater. Never thought of that. And I love yellow braid, I’m old and it’s easier to see
Hey Debo great video, you are in books "The Fishing Professor" I've learned a ton and greatly appreciate your down to basics approach on all the subjects. In this video the example of losing your lures while casting with braid. That's me. Multiple times. I thought my knot tying was poor. But maybe it was the lack of give while using braid. Thanks again for your knowledge and time. Great class Professer Debo!
Love these videos! I am wanting to try braid on a baitcaster and have it on a spinning reel already.
Debo, I found this video to be very useful. I have never used braid, so this helped understand when it would help.
I am getting back into fishing after a 30 year layoff. I have had very good luck with monofilament through my earlier fishing. Now everyone says use 7 foot rods with braided line. My rods are usually 5 and a half to 6 feet long with what was at the time high speed reels (5 to 5.5 : 1 gearing). I am glad to hear your ideas on fishing the newer equipment. Thanks.
By the way when I first began watching two years ago I commented to you after seeing my first Debo video on Backlashes, that I couldn't believe you were not a 100K subscriber RUclipsr. At the time you were high 30's. Guess what I've watched every video you've ever uploaded and you are by FAR the most informative, funny, knowledgeable, kind guy doing this, period....... Well here were are at 118 K and guess what your even better now. I have learned most of what I know about fishing and being a decent guy while I do that from you. I'm sure many of your viewers say Thank You, but in all sincerity Thank you so much, you've improved my life dramatically and not just with regards to fishing.
Appreciate the video Debo. Great info as usual. Thanks man! ✌🏻🎣
Thanks for your thoughts. Usually run braid to leader on spinning outfits except micro guided rods. Yep 10 to 15 lb test to a 6-8lb leader! Thanks again!
Just love these tips and tricks. Please keep doing them.
Video was very full of helpful content, have always benefitted from your videos, thanks for sharing 🎣
This was a great video. I would love to see more like this. I also would love to see what types of rods (lengths, actions) would you pair with what types of lures. Thank you
Great video and extremely helpful, thanks Debo
Glad you made this, i feel my braid is scaring the fish, havent caught anything since i switched
You had me at the title!. Glad you covered this subject. I've told you in the past, it's been a few of your videos that push me to go outside the box. Not being a fan of braided line I refused to conform. Spinning reels are where my versatility shines. The best adjustment I ever made was using braided line. I too believe that fish can see colors like they do. I'm now over 60 & I rely on a leader as well. I do use 8# most days and fluorocarbon is my line of choice. This past year I decided to use braided line in my baitcasters as well. I decided to go with 30# braided due to also using it for Ned rig at the same time.😳 Yes sir, you read that right! It actually works really well. My leader is 10# fluorocarbon. I also throw a 90series Choppo on the same setup. So Debo, yes, thanks to you, I now have expanded my arsenal and techniques. With braid, many options are now possible.
It’s been a learning experience with some trial and error. Trying different brands/combinations etc for different applications/setups. I don’t think it will end as my fishing experience goes along and my preferences change.
For instance, I kayak fish and the smallmouth kept shaking me off when in the yak. I was running all FC and a 6:3 or 7:0 ratio reel. So what I did was buy a 8:3 ratio reel to take the slack up quickly, mainlined a braid to a FC leader and it decreased the lost fish. Less stretch + faster reel = more fish in the yak.
I dig this kind of content. There’s always something new you can learn or adjust.
thanks for the info all of your videos have so much helpful info in them.
Awesome info as always and easy to follow. Thanks
These type videos are much needed. Since in most of my fishing, I'm pulling fish through thick grass and thick pads, I use straight braid. I'm not concerned then about line visibility, I don't think fish can distinguish between a strand of grass and low vis green braid, at least I hope so, haha. I do use mono when fishing for stocked trout. During cold months, before the pads and grass are an issue, I sometimes use Copolymer. As the grass and pads go dormant, I've been considering a braid to floro or copolymer leader to see how I like it.
Good video when I started bait casting I used mono per one of your videos. I now use braid with leaders
Hi Debo…nice video. I agree with what your saying. I have been using co-polymer and love it for many bait casting applications. It’s strong, lower stretch than mono and great for jerk baits, under spins, square bills, you get the idea. Almost forgot its budget friendly . My favorite this year has been maxima Chamaeleon. Check it out you might fall in love with it. Cheers and tight lines!
Always on point with your vids
Great info Debo! I think some B roll footage would really help with this type of video, but the format is good as is!
This very ;helpful. I grew up before flouro and braid were a thing. I'm ready to try some braid on my spinning now.
Another great video! I really like the approach to this subject. I was going to do this subject this winter as I will be recovering from open heart surgery. Thanks for the information! Keep it up!
Loved the video. After a 35 year break this helps a lot. Thanks.
Great video, very helpful content. Thanks!
Very helpful. I'm still very new at fishing I use braid a lot. But I still do a lot of things wrong, so these videos are helpful.
Braid on spinning gear was a game changer this year for me. For all the reasons shown. 15-20 lb to 12-15 flouro.
Let's go baby good vid man keep up the good work like always. Also I use straight hi viz color braids no leaders just straight braid and haven't ever had any problems catching fish
Your reviews always help buddy...
Great help. I love using braid with a leader.
Great video, these are very helpful.
Very helpful! Keep it up, Debo!
Great information I really appreciate your channel.
This video came at just about the perfect time because I am going to be going through my rods and reels to put new line on. This helps so much because I wasn't sure if I should do braid or monofilament.
Just another thought have you tried the Berkley fireline. This super strong and smooth. I use it when I build fishing rods to undertie the raps. It holds up to a lot of abuse.
Awesome video debo! Love the fish food for thought!
Great breakdown on pros and cons.
Thanks for validating what I've been doing :) (25-lb braid to a mono or floro leader) and a rod with a bit of flex in it.
these kind of videos help me a lot I have started using braid with fluro leaders because of your videos. My problem is finding time to get to the waters lol
I like this information. Entertaining and informative.
I enjoy these types of videos sprinkled in the mix
Great video! All the info I wanted to know.
These videos are super helpful as a new angler! I've been using straight braid lately. I know I should use a leader but tying on a leader is intimidating.
Really really helpful for us guys that have never used braid!
Good video!! You are a really good teacher!!
I have used both braid and monofilament. For my cheaper spin-cast reels (Zebco 33, 404, Roam, etc.) I use mono. My spinning reels and my bait caster have braid. One thing to consider for newer fishermen (fisher-persons, to be PC) is check the discount bins for fishing line. A years ago, I found several spools of Spyder-wire in different test strengths (6, 10, 14, 20, 65) in the clearance area of Walmart for about $4 each. I still check for deals like this when I go to Walmart. While this may not be the "best" braid ever made, for the price, I couldn't pass it up. Both braid and mono have their places in fishing, and I think it comes down to both personal preference and to the conditions of the area you are fishing. Great video, DEBO!
Love the video man keep up the great work and great info
Hey Debo- Yes, this video helped a lot. I've been trying to up my game to getting better gear and want to "re-learn" how to use a spinning combo- specifically for finesse situations. I grew up using spinning combos for everything and have since started using baitcasters but I want to keep that spinning rod in my arsenal. I've only used mono on my spinning rods and am thinking about using braid now. I fish mainly open water/lakes from the bank and off of my kayak. I've got a 7' medium rod and a 2500 reel. I'm thinking 10/12/15 lb line should be fine for my applications. I don't believe fish see the line (at least I'm not convinced of it) so I will most likely go with a hi-vis braid like the p-line you describe. I agree using a stiffer leader will help when walking a topwater lure.
I'm one of those viewers that try to keep it simple and have a few multi-purpose rods/reels/tackle. I don't fish enough to warrant a garage full of gear so my requirements are quite small. If I can keep the gear lasting for years I'm a happy camper. Of course, I don't mind picking up a few lures now and then too!
Thanks again for the channel and your videos.
Awesome help or reminder!
