A comment about mono and its annoying stretch and memory properties......in the early 70s fishing weedless Johnson spoons and O’neil Weed Wings on Lake Okeechobee was a good way to catch a heavyweight bass. We (Palm Beach area) were Ande “jet” (jet black mono) users which as I recall was about the strongest mono available but its memory issues were particularly bothersome. One clever way to minimize this inconvenience was to “pre-stretch” your line the night before you went fishing. We tied the line to a strong item, walked off about a cast and a half, and pulled the line until it seemed to not have any stretch left......held it there for a predetermined count (10??……speaking of memory!), then wiped the line down, reeled it back on nice and smoothly and completed getting everything ready. Then we all saw that BASS pros taught us that you needed to have at least 10-15 rods with you so the line stretching practice became overbearing and was dropped! Seriously, the pre-stretch did restore more favorable properties, but only for a short time.
Never fails...you guys sometimes cover the same subject matter, but I still learned something new! You guys have set the bar high for bassing information. Why didn't we have info like this when we were kids?
Hi guys. I am a South African bass crazy angler in a province (KZN) where we do mainly bank fishing with a LOT of grass and structure. We mainly fish private farm dams with some really good results as these dams are not fished often. The reason for my comment today is to thank you for really excellent advice on different techniques and lures and how to fish more successfully. You guys are by far the best channel i subscribe to even though there are other good ones. Best wishes. Burt van Schalkwyk.
If you follow them for long enough, you'll see many things are repeated. So if you ever have the question "I wonder if they have a video on...." the answer is most likely yes. Finding it could be tricky though.
I didn’t know what i was more excited for when i woke up this morning: a new TacticalBassin video or the launch of all those new products at Icast 2019!!
Been using mono since the late 80s. For a while I had a reel spooled up with dark green spider wire right after it came out, I hundreds of casts on dozens of lakes and rivers I never caught a single fish. Switched back to mono and I land big trout every time I go out!
I agree. I think I’ve learned more in 2 months of watching this these guys than I have in a lifetime of picking up tips and tricks from other fisherman.
I switched from Suffix 832 to Maxcuatro about a month ago and I can't believe how much better overall it is. I'm literally stunned at it's performance. I particularly like how it sits on the spool and comes off so smoothly. I'm still getting used to mono leaders but overall, it's been a HUGE uplift for me. -mM
Considering the fish can sense your line through their lateral line no matter what fishing line you use I don't care what color it is I want the strongest toughest stuff I can get and still be able to cast so I go with monofilament all the way no leaders.
Hey Matt, I have seen your other vids on line too and I will tell you that your information has really built the bridge between kinda understanding and doing something with confidence. Line can be so confusing. I basically followed your advice on the few combos I have with braid to mono and will continue to learn as I build and expand my ability to fish different ways and conditions. Thanks again for giving back to the community years of proven experience. I am going to hire you someday just to be able to ask you 10,000 questions:)

Great education channel for people who just want to increase their odds in their favor. For many educated fisherman this kind of information sharing is taboo. I will say, by far, this is my go to channel for info. Thanks you and keep up the good work.
Matt, I have found that electrical tape can also pull loose under certain environmental conditions when using braid direct to spool. I have found a trick that will lock that braid down to the spool every single time...wrap alternating half hitches of braid around the spool. To do this, remove the spool from the reel, tie the braid with your california lock knot and wrap alternating half hitches around each end of the spool. It effectively creates a Chinese finger around the spool where the braid locks into itself. The number of half hitches will depend on line weight. 2-3 wraps then test the line. It locks down so tight that you have to be careful when using some of the thinner finesse spools that you can actually warp the spool because of how much pressure you can put on the line to spool connection. Hope this helps anyone looking for that 100% line to spool connection.
Matt My son and I FISH AS MUCH AS WE CAN ! We love and appreciate all the information. Some of your advise, we have found, is used among the pros. Line choice and even knots. I also and the money supply, appreciate the way you broke down that you dont need everything you can go to a standard and grow from there.

I've been watching Matt Allen videos and tactical bassin in general forever, and just noticed I wasn't subscribed!! Glad I fixed that. Very educational and idc how much you know. There's always more to learn.
I tie braid straight to the spool but not with a single knot. After the arbor knot, I tie a series of half hitches around the spool and cinch it down on itself. The result is that the knots lock everything down and it won’t slip. You have to pull the spool to tie it up but that’s not a big deal.
Matt. You hit the nail on the head with this vlog. I have been so confused on this subject of lines and i finaly got it. Dude epic vlog again Thank you. You guys are friggin awesome.
I've torn 3 of my reels apart trying to figure out why my drag is failing when pitching large swimbaits on braid. Thanks for the electrical tape tip, Matt. You may have just saved my sanity!
Just watched and realized that I have all these tactics already in effect. Good bless TB! I won't buy any other braid than Maxcurato, super thin, and super strong. I started using Sufix Nanobraid this year on my spinning set ups with great results, it frays a little bit but I like the visibility and bass/trout/pike in my waters don't seem to mind it. I think it's worth a shot.
Braid on every reel I own, floro leader, FG connection when I’m setting up at home, on the water uni to uni. I do keep mono for top water leader, but I don’t fish top water often. Everyone and their mother use whopper poppers and frogs around me.
I learned my lesson on braid slipping the hardway that resulted in a giant smallmouth getting away. Honestly had no clue that it was the line that was slipping, instead, I thought it broke the drag.
Thx for the r&d finding fc100...Exactly what I was looking for. I fish for big ass salt water bass called snook. I'm not sure what "braid to mono" knot you guys use but the fg knot is flawless... I have bent 7/0 mustad jigheads straight with this knot still intact. It has never failed.
Suggestion: Get a wide spool of Gaffer's Tape for the reel backing on braid. It's more expensive than electrical tape, but doesn't break down and get everything sticky on your spool. It tears very easy without needing scissors. Getting a wide spool allows you to easily tear off the exact width for any size reel spool. An added bonus is that you can also use it to store reels that are already spooled with line. I just tape down the end of the line on the spool with a small piece. The next time you use that reel, you can just pull off that piece of tape and stick it on the rod just below the hook keeper. It can be reused to store the spool multiple times as it was designed to be put down and taken up while retaining it's adhesive properties, but not leave behind residue on the rod or the line.
I know you guys are pretty big braid fans. Personally, I have finally figured out my line preferences. I use 65lb braid on the rod I throw frogs and jigs in cover with, 15-17lb fluorocarbon for trigs, jigs in clear water, spinnerbaits, etc. 10-12 lb fluorocarbon for cranks, 10-12lb mono for poppers and braid on spinning reels -- thanks for the tip for 12lb Sunline SX1 by the way, that stuff is very abrasion resistant for a thin braid and has worked out great for me. For fluorocarbon I've been using Berkley Trilene fluorocarbon because I buy it buy one get one in the spring and the knot strength (on a uni knot anyway) is as good as mono.
I always use 65lb daiwa j-braid on everything for everything. I know that it would work best to have multiple rods and reels for multiple setups but I only have 2. One concept z on a all star rod with a swivel for all lures. And a origin TX for worm fishing and salt on some random rod from and old Abu combo.
Been watching your videos since the first one I saw ... you were in a garage on your boat... talking swimbaits... and ospreys were the main ones you were talking about... you know your shit and have taught me a lot ... thanks Matt..keep it up ... I can never learn enough for bass fishing ...!!
when I spool braid I use a rag and double over the line with the rag and put the entire spool under extreme tension and there is no spool live slip, it also helps prevent any backlash past your max casting distance because its so tightly spooled.
I've had a real difficult time breaking 12# Assasin when hung up, it's very resilient line. I definitely like the Max Cuatro braid but the new V2 line has become my new favorite.
Just getting into bass fishing serioysly but I've used ultragreen and assasin/sniper and power pro as my steelhead/salmon and smallmouth lines for years in the great lakes now. All great products
I agree with about everything you said except one thing..When tying braid straight to the spool you said that you use 12 inches of electrical tape for the backing to avoid slipping..DO NOT use that much because you are adding way to much weight to your spool..You are defeating the purpose of having a MGL Spool..Every gram of weight on the spool counts tremendously and hurts your casting distance..The ported MGL spools are ported to reduce the weight of the spool and reduce the inertia and increase the start up speed of the spool to get longer casts..With 12 inches of electric tape you no longer have a MGL spool..Use Mono or Flouro always and you only need about 1/16” thick of that..Hope you take my advice..You can use the tape but if so id use just enough to go around maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of the spool..It’s not necessary to cover the whole spool
Great video. The best I've seen clearly exlpaining the different lines and their differences. If you could, I'd love to see you go over what pound leader for what pound main line, if it makes a difference in what lure you are fishing or fish you are going after.
I use poly for a lot of treble hook applications because you get the best of both worlds. I do use traditional mono on a few set ups as well (certain jerk baits and for open-water froggin'). Braid is a real niche line for me, but does get used. I rarely use a leader except on spinning set ups. I'm not opposed to them, but if I have enough reels to make a dedicated setup, why not?
@@Ajdizzle4rizzle I've been looking for good line and Matt is pretty smart guy everything that I've done did he said his work 100% so I have no doubt don't hurt to try something new man get your head out of your ass
After losing several hudds and an a s-waiver 200 i finally got away from flouro as a leader or primary line for swimbait fishing, like Matt had been saying all along.
I used to use 832 a lot, and it really does fade, but darn is it reliable. I've snapped Power Pro more times than I remember, gave it up. I pretty much use Tuffline and 832, and that cheap J-braid is okay for smaller spinning gear.
Yo Allen, 20 ib. fluorocarbon is very good for bank fishing. And yes, I believed you won't get the best casting & performance with heavier line, but as I been testing over and over with 20 pound line from the shore, I can fish extremely shallow dirty water and thick cover without too many problem. If my crankbait get stuck, I can pull to bend those treble out and get my lure back, catch alot of big bass not to worry my line breaking off, even if I tied a bad knot with the right amount of drag pressure. I'm an more experienced fisherman on bank than on the boat & I just hoping you guys are not overlooking the benefit of heavier mainline on an conventional baitcasting reel.
Abrasion resistance is another reason to use Mono. Mono Memory is easily removed with a subtle stretching of the line, turns out, memory works both ways. It remembers being straight.
I have 4 different rod and reel set ups... only difference is Length of rod and faster and slower reels. (One spinning rod) I put 20 lb test braid to 15 lb test leader on all of them. I catch alot of fish... procat or Power Pro for the braid. With some 15 lb Bass Pro Shop fluorocarbon.... What I'm getting at is you don't have to spend a lot of money or get crazy with fishing.. make it as simple as you can... just have confidence in whatever you throw and work on lure selection and technique. Now go get em!
Thanks to one of your past videos on the subject I'm now exclusively a braid to mono (Pline flouro coated mono). I love it. I can't imagine using all mono. I get so few bird nests compared to mono. And I get so much more time out of braid. I can use the same line for a few months or more. And one small spool of leader will last me forever. And I LOVE the blood knot. I still struggle tying that fucking knot though. When ever I go to close it...not sure what I'm doing wrong. I pull the tags. Pull the main lines. And maybe 7 out of ten times they just pull apart. But when it works it's unbelievable. I've snagged crap and had to break my line and it's NEVER the blood knot that breaks. Thanks as always.
(With the knot part) That's like me, but with the uni-knot. Sometimes, as I am tightening up the knot, there ends up being this small loop at the top of the knot, it looks awful, and I'm sure it would end in disaster if I just kept it like that. So I always redo it if I see that loop.
@@stephen2634 I usually do 40lb braid to about 6’ of 8 or 10lb mono. Sometimes 12 sometimes 6. But mostly on 40 I do 8 or ten. 50lb I’d do 12-15 lb but I don’t do that much. Frankly lately I’m more a spinning real guy and fishing for smaller stuff crappie etc. On that rig I mostly do 20lb braid to 6lb mono.
Love the videos guys. I definitely enjoy waking up on Monday, Wednesday, Friday to nothing but knowledge being dropped on us. One question for you guys with storing the line on your boat. Does heat effect the longevity durability of the line. Thank you guys hope to hear from you!!
I use a piece of shelf liner cut to the size of the spool arbor to keep my braid tight on my reel...no adhesive residue from tape making everything sticky...
This video is very informational, my only thing is I’m not a big braid person due to the fact I’m not a “pro” with baitcasters 😂 so I still get bad bird nest and wanna know what’s best in ghat situation. I’m moving into more trouble hook baits and larger baits, I use a bait caster on a 6’10 rod, and want to know what line is best for my situation
Hey Matt! Love the information vids on this channel. I would like a information video on the different variants of mono for main line and leader material and mono/fluoro combos for example co-polymer, fluoro-coat etc what and when to use it. Hawe a good one! Ronny / Finland
flouro-coat type products are a marketing thing. they give you no benefits of a real flouro. they're basically a weak copolymer. stick with your regular copolymer/mono lines. braid to copolymer/mono(same thing these days really) is the best thing you can do.
You have forgotten about the Alberto Knot. This is what I have always used for my braid to leader knot. Personal opinion It's the thinnest and strongest knot I have ever used compared to a uni to uni knot.
It was quite common when braid first came on the market, not many use it any more but I like the way it slows down line fray. A tiny drop is all it takes, and don't get your fingers stuck together lol

Bro every tip video I watch comestibles from you. You such a good job going into detail about the line. Great vid. I love the channel.
Matt and Tim, you guys are great! Thanks for all the tips. I just started bass fishing in MD and I really appreciate all your insights and advice
Man, ive been having so much trouble finding bass fishing spots in maryland, what are youre placed you go to?
A broccoli rubber bands from the grocery store works mint on the spool to stop slipping I learned that trip in the surf casting world
Thank you Matt for this info. I re-did all my bait casters.
P Line flouroclear is also a really great leader line
what a wealth of valuable information man!!! Thank you very much. You´ve made an amazingly useful thorough colllege lecture. Thank you very again.
7:40 See the bass swimming into the picture on the right side?
Awesome vid Matt! Great details. Always wondered what changes you made when it came to line size and crankin... keep it up buddy
I've use the Alberto knot with braid and uni knot when I'm going from mono to fluoro or vista versa.
I use braid - FG knot - mono leader on almost everything. It works well...if and when I catch fish.
Great video as always guys
Just getting into bass fishing serioysly but I've used ultragreen and assasin/sniper and power pro as my steelhead/salmon and smallmouth lines for years in the great lakes now. All great products
Love all these you guys Rock 🥇
Love watching you guys and all the knowledge you share! Thank you so much!!!
Anyone else automatically hit like just because you know its going to be good before you watch?
Yes, you absolutely dont have to use that much tape!. A piece the size of your thumbnail is all you need.
Great video. The best I've seen clearly exlpaining the different lines and their differences.
If you could, I'd love to see you go over what pound leader for what pound main line, if it makes a difference in what lure you are fishing or fish you are going after.
Or not, lol. That must have been a tough question. Maybe someone else knows how to pair up leader test to line test.
Very Informative. I've gotten better and enjoyed fishing alot more (more fish hooked) from watching your videos
Awesome video I've never used Power Pro but I'm going to redo all my reels this weekend with it thanks brother
It is always good to blindly buy whatever a salesman tells you to buy
I'm a big fan of suffix too, and yes it fades crazy fast
Nice video, I like to use yozuri hybrid and gliss and seagaur Invisx lines.
I watch a lot of fishing vids but When I want to learn something only watch yours
I’m thinking I might pick up some of that Floro for super clear waters though. Western Wa has a lot of lakes with 20+ ft vis and finicky smallies
Great information as always!
Great video Matt. Thanks for making these.
Yahoo I needed a refresher on fishing line and I can wait for part 2 👊👊👍🍻🍺
Man I really want to thank you for that video you're awesome.
Maximum line is one of my favorite too been using it since I was a kid
Matt thanks for the 2019 refresher on lines & knots...
For light fishing I use Mono .. for midium and heavy fishing I use breaded line...30Lb. is all rounder..Power pro is my favorite .
(With the knot part)
That's like me, but with the uni-knot. Sometimes, as I am tightening up the knot, there ends up being this small loop at the top of the knot, it looks awful, and I'm sure it would end in disaster if I just kept it like that. So I always redo it if I see that loop.
So how long should this mono leader be and what lb test
@@stephen2634 I usually do 40lb braid to about 6’ of 8 or 10lb mono. Sometimes 12 sometimes 6. But mostly on 40 I do 8 or ten. 50lb I’d do 12-15 lb but I don’t do that much. Frankly lately I’m more a spinning real guy and fishing for smaller stuff crappie etc. On that rig I mostly do 20lb braid to 6lb mono.
Great topic! You guys are the best!
Braid to mono instead of fluro good information
You guys should make more videos of you guys catching fish
Dude where have you been.
Hi, how is Spiderwire stealth braid "Translucent" line? Thanks......
yo this video is absolutely awesome.
This video is very informational, my only thing is I’m not a big braid person due to the fact I’m not a “pro” with baitcasters 😂 so I still get bad bird nest and wanna know what’s best in ghat situation. I’m moving into more trouble hook baits and larger baits, I use a bait caster on a 6’10 rod, and want to know what line is best for my situation
i don’t have the courage to throw a 20$ jerkbait on 8-10 pound test😂😂😂
crawford fite same, my jerkbaits get thrown on 15lb assassin. Cranks are thrown on 16lb sniper.
@@johncoleman7308 12 lb
Stren magna thin is perfect for jerkbaits
😂😂
I throw my expensive bait on 15+
I'd throw my wife on 2lb test
Yup, I only throw my $20 Luckycrafts on 30lb braid when fishing for my Halibut here in San Diego!
@@Jon-nz3dm Thats what i mean to explain in a video what is good for what and what that you should never buy
i use braid only. suffix 832 is the best for the money imo
You have forgotten about the Alberto Knot. This is what I have always used for my braid to leader knot. Personal opinion It's the thinnest and strongest knot I have ever used compared to a uni to uni knot.
Been my go to for years as well. Strong not, fast to tie. Leave a little tag on the braid and a tiny drop of super glue and you're golden
@@bobward7489 I've never thought of using super glue. I'll have to try it out.
It was quite common when braid first came on the market, not many use it any more but I like the way it slows down line fray. A tiny drop is all it takes, and don't get your fingers stuck together lol
Really awesome video 👌
