Top 5 Baits For January Bass Fishing!

- Catching bass in January is very different than the rest of the year! Do you want to be consistent? These are the top 5 baits (actually 6) that we rely on to consistently catch bass during the coldest part of the year! Come along as we explore our confidence baits to help you catch more fish in January!
In most of the country January is the coldest month of the year. Fish are lethargic and often laying right on bottom. Finesse is the natural approach for these fish but the right reaction baits can trigger a feed response as well, even in a lethargic bass. We rely on a mix of reaction, finesse, and metal baits to consistently catch fish all through Winter.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits and gear we use in January. We've linked the exact colors, sizes, and rigging components to help you find the exact items you're looking for. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Matt I think I understand now why I look forward to each of these episodes.
You don’t just teach, you’re a great storyteller. I bet you’d really enjoy the storytelling festival in Jonesborough TN each fall. Thank you and God bless…
Cold weather and still wearing flip-flops- you Sir are a savage 🤙
This has been my year. I landed my pb 9.88 back in May. Then shattered that with a 10.27 in August. Here’s to a teener in 25’
Awesome baits Matt it's like you can read the Bass minds of what they bite. Will do what you say bud it always works for me when I watch TB videos. Thanks Matt and have a healthy, happy and tight lines New Year 🎊👍🏻🎣
Thank you guys for all your effort and hard work to bring us this much closer to our next bite!
This is going to be a year of getting a PB, hopefully a DD. I have been watching y’all’s technique videos and my local water just got a stocking of small trout which even the 5 lbers can eat easily. Keep the videos up guys, I’ve been watching since Matt was sitting in his brown couch and demonstrating lures in a canal.
Also I experienced the purple success a few years ago fishing a Neko rigged worm. I had been throwing a brown/green pumpkin worm if the same type and switched to the purple to try and attract more bites and it worked very well including a big fish I broke off in cover with light line. You guys really give great tips to try when the comfort lures/ techniques don’t produce.
These 5 baits work in winter-- when there is actually fish on your body of water😢. As a bank angler, I found out my lake/pond had only one fish suspended using a portable sonar. 😂
Been focused on ice fishing for awhile, nice change to get back to listening in on some open water! Can't wait! Our water is frozen for another 3 months still 😂
Thanks for the tip Matt I have never use the color purple before I uncle use to use the color all the time in the winter time well when we have a cold front here in Orlando Florida and he always used the color purple and just catch bass all the time
Dont forget Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that he just came into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS, and a Motec system exhaust.
I said forget about it cuh
Another great video, from the best educational bass channel on RUclips. Could you please mention water temperatures, the actual temperature, as people are in different parts of the country where, “winter” means entirely too different things. Ice fishing for some in January and some are still seeing 60 degrees. The actual temperature would make it easier to apply the different techniques, as per “January winter time” fishing. Thanks and cheers. Looking forward to some more great videos!
This up coming year I am going to take bass fishing more seriously then just playing around with it so I have alot to learn about bass fishing
In Kentucky this past week got a few nice bass on purple / craw purple /browns best and tried many options on my jigs ..the Z-man bugz as a trailer seemed my best option for me too with purple /red tint first name thst color ..then also purple /green tube ..and other ball head jig my best bite came on Mega bass vis 110 In some heavily stained water I found a color that really really worked , natural ..Matt shad ..even though it’s translucent it shows up well in stained water ..they couldn’t resist ..got a 5.44 20 inch fatty ..a few 2.5 low 3s..quality for my area
Matt going down to mid Georgia at sunrise Tuesday 72 degrees 🐟💦 catching fish down by the dam where you caught one years ago😎 happy new year
Dave from Georgia🔥🐟🔥
David what lake? I’m on Oconee
I've had a few days where a 4" robo with MM and MD (pinks and purples) got my ONLY bites. I fish the little 4 like I would a ned. Very slow, let soak. They have a worm brown with a purple accent that is nice too when the water is more clear.
Glad to back here I know I have missed a couple videos, so I got to catch up on
You know I'm loving the vault this week 🤫🎣
Great tips and examples 👍 thank you, will try this weekend.
Can you please once and for all make a full episode about flip flops so we finally understand?
California is the answer.
If you don’t know you won’t get it!! 😉
I'm a Florida boy and can't wear em below 40 degrees 😂
It's because they're super comfortable and easiest to slide into and toss off. And it's the closest you can get to being barefoot, which is nice. Once you get used to a good pair, it's tough to have to put shoes on. And once you're used to them, it has to be seriously cold for your feet to feel it. It IS a Northern California thing. A lot of us grew up with flip flops, and like I said, once you start wearing them, it's tough to wear anything else. Buy yourself a good pair of Reef's and you'll see.
@@AdventuresWestall facts!
And I just got my AFTCO vest!
Hey Matt, can you post the link for the cold weather overall/bib you wear?
Thanks for all you guys do! I’m a self-taught bass fisherman and you have both helped me tremendously. The attention to every detail is what sets you apart. I will find myself watching a TacticalBassin video and any follow up question I think of you answer in the video. Cheers!
Aftco Hydronaut Insulated version
@ thank you!
This is my favorite fishing channel I have the upmost confidence in your advice but I have been throwing that tactical dd crank bait for 3 winter's now and I mean religiously i have all the colors you recommend and have yet to catch one fish on it l believe what you say about it burn burn pause l get it but i haven't caught a thing what am i doing wrong
Happy new year Matt. Bassmd
I would watch a video dedicated to how fishing in the Amazon changed your perspective on bass fishing and the gear you use.
PB&J has been my go to color for finesse jigs and I’ve put a hurting on em. Aj’s finesse jig paired with a modified baby brush hawg both PB&J color.
I was fishing a dimiki rig and caught a 2 pound smallmouth barely under the lake record at lake Robinson sc
Could you do a video on the top baits for tournament season in high land and low land reservoirs, and in river systems?
On the lake the other day after striper and broke 2 guides on 2 different orochis because of the amount of ice on my guides. Other than that I was the only soul on the lake and ended up getting my lake PB of 38lbs on a WCZ citizen 6. Like to see a video of you guys on my home lakes here in east TN like south holston, Boone or Watauga.
Great video
I've been upgrading my spinning and casting reels over the past few months and decided to go with specific Shimano reels from your recommendations. I love Shimano reels! What gear ratio would you recommend for my crankbait rod? That's my next upgrade. 6:3:1 or 7:2:1?
What’s it going to take for a podcast!!!! The TB team needs to go on Rogan and BTL,
Listening on the way to the lake lol
Matt & Tim, for New Years please give us the South America Guyana Video! #NeverForget #2020
Merry Christmas lol
That dbl tail grub seems to me it would be to much action., obviously you guys get bit so I'm gonna put it on
Will you give us the specs on your rods?
Thanks Matt. Must be cold where you are. Does that mean you are wearing flip flops?
It's hitting the high 40's to low 50's and rain here in Michigan this week. Do you think that 10°-15° jump will impact the fishing?
Ty for the video. IM AT THE LAKE FISHING WHILE LISTENING LOL lake Degray
Do you throw that football head jig while fishing in Florida. I’m in Central Florida?
How’s the shaky head this time of year on bluebird winter days? Are they deeper and slower on bluebird days?
Did you guys see tackle warehouse has the archelon fir 2.99
I’ve only fished Chickamauga twice but want to come down in January and February and throw an A-Rig. What depth and kind of areas do i need to look for? Thanks
I love your content, but let's be honest an A Rig and a flutter spoon aren't going to work from the bank.
I feel like it would be helpful to those that are bank fisherman, to have some alternative suggestions.
A rig can work from bank or pretty heavy cover. Rig an a rig with owner swimbaits hooks weedless.
Best bank rig this time of year is the jig. Caught some pigs in February on a black blue jig
The blade bait pisses me off. Unless i take off the clip for an o ring, the hooks constantly catch on the line.
Try a heavier leader, 12 lb seems to be the magic number where that happens a lot less. Also, it depends on your brand of blade. You may be able to switch the hole position and eliminate a lot of that.
@@tacticalbassin damiki. Use center hole. I was using 10 flouro straight, no leader. I'll try the tips.
Lots of good deals on the tackle ware house but I reading reviews and apparently they leaked people’s card information and personal info . So I’m kinda on the fence on ordering tackle
That's not at all what happened. 2 years ago, they had a one-time data breach, just like many other online retailers. That's long since been over... you're as safe there as you are anywhere else online. 👍🏼 We've placed over 100 orders since then without an issue.
@@tacticalbassin thanks for replying and clearing that up .
Matt you are a 👽. Flip flops in the cold. Something fishy going on here. I want DNA evidence 😂.
Anyone tried the Zman Shadtron in winter yet? ( I just got some and haven’t tried yet)
My lake the valt 8.1 ratio burning the bait.
