@@TermlessHGW I grew up in the '50's and all we had were fly reels and baitcasters. I had a lot of Abu Garcia baitcasters that then were made in Sweden. It was a very high quality reel at the time and considered collectible today. Of course there are many baitcasters with less capacity but as what's available, baitcasters have more capacity. Both type reels have their place. I totally agree with the comments below. This video lesson is far and a way the best presentation I have seen on how to spool line onto a spinning reel. The content, the delivery and the voice were all easy to understand even for some of us Aussies Down Under. Many thanks.
I purchased a Shimano reel an looked at countless RUclips videos to learn how to spool it. They were all telling me to spool the reel with the label up. Right before I started spooling, I looked at the reel's instructions. Shimano says to spool it exactly like you are telling us in this video. That's how I went about it instead and it seems to work perfectly. No issues. No label up guys!
There are SO MANY things in life where the way “everybody” says to do it, or they way “it’s always been done” are just the wrong way. As my dad used to say, “it’s not what people don’t know that gets them in trouble, it’s the things they’re convinced they know that just ain’t so!” I learned not to listen to what anybody tells me as far as how to or what’s correct. Instead, I’ve learned to look it up for myself, like you did in looking at the reel’s actual instructions. I’ve been amazed at how many times well meaning people, often times people I respected like bosses, were unknowingly telling me wrong, often times because that’s the way they were taught and they had never bothered to look it up for themselves. So keep up the good work looking it up for yourself! You’ll never go wrong that way!!
Once the spool is filled and you walk out your 100 yards, don’t cut the line and retie for a “future reference point”. Use a Sharpie marker and color about an inch to mark that 100 yard point. That way you only tie a knot the second time you need new line. Tight lines my friend.
I was thinking the same thing, about using a Sharpie, to mark the line as opposed to cutting, and retieing; so, I am glad someone confirmed....I admit, I thought of the sharpie "trick" after watching Roland Martin suggest using a black sharpie, to darken the end of braid in lieu of using a clear leader....
I use another way to make sure I have the right amount of line on the spool but using the entire spool of 150 yds of braided line. My reels will also take more than 150 yds. of braid, so I START with the braid on the spool and use the entire spool. When I get to the end, I attach my mono and fill the rest of the spool to where I want. You use 1/16 inch as a gauge, which is good. Some spools have a line inside the lip of the spool as a gauge. When I get that mono on, I cut it then take it to a field or lot and tie the mono to a tree. Pull all of the line off the spool. Go back to the tree and take the mono and tie to the spool and re-spool all of the line (using your wet towel to add tension). When you get to the end of the braid, you'll have exactly the amount of line on the spool needed, utilizing an entire 150 yd. spool of braid. During the course of a year, you'll cut and retie leaders and remove any braided line with abrasion, so I will also pull the entire length of the braid off and retie the mono to the opposite end of the braided line. (chances are that end never saw the light of day if you catch average-sized fish). If there is a significant amount of braided line removed at the end of the year, you can add more mono to bring the spool fill back to the level you like to help avoid "wind knots".

I've always spooled my spinning reels with my grandfathers Webster's Dictionary 2nd edition from 1934. It's 3350 pages, and it applies the perfect amount of pressure to the line - thus eliminating the need to apply pressure by hand. If anyone uses a book to do this - I would suggest to use a more modern book - because apparently a webster's dictionary from 1934, without fishing line damage, is worth around $1000...

Thank you!! You just proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks!! The walking off 100 yards and cutting and doing another uni is very smart. Thank you
Don't forget to advise using the original line to get double line life by pulling the braid off in a large area and tying it back on in reverse direction. You can easily get 4-6 years of use on one 150 yd spool. If you are a real penny pincher, lay out half a spool in an open area and wind it on the reel. Then attach mono backing and wind it on until the reel is full. pull the entire line off the reel in an organized fashion and rewind it mono backing first. Use a couple years, reverse the braid only, use a few more years then replace the braid with the other half of your original spool. Braid yardage wound on and spool size purchased will vary with you reel size and fishing style but, you will be dollars ahead vs mono that breaks down pretty quickly in the sun.
If we have a spare spool that's already half-filled w/ Mono, can't we just spool this up to reverse the direction to this second spool using another rod / reel --- which then becomes your new primary spool with the braid now ready in the reverse direction?
Very helpful video for someone just learning. Spooled line on my Shimano 2000 reel with success. The knot took a few tries but finally did it right. Thanks very much!

Awesome video man! I spool my rods annually myself and always have trouble with the backings. That cardboard box trick is genius! I'm sure my friends are sick of me saying "hey, hold this for a minute". Cheers and tight lines!
I use the Pflueger President XT reels in size 30, because they are light, strong and more importantly they hold 160 yards of 10lb braid, so a standard 150 yd spool works perfectly. They also have a braid ready spool that doesn’t need mono under it. I also buy 300 yd spools to split between two reels to save money on braid.
I’ll use your method when I respond my reel. I’ve been using the label up method with less than satisfactory results. I see the logic in your process. Thanks.
Came here for the braid info. My father taught this method to my brother and I when we were kids (me about 10yo). He'd hold the line spool with a pencil, and I'd reel it on. Always Stren. We are both in our 60's now 😀 Good upload and info at your website.
An arbor knot is a slip-loop with a stopper knot in the tag end. You put it over the spool and cinch it up until the stopper knot comes up tight, then trim the tag. You install it so the reel winds the line on pulling the knot tight. Just thought I'd add that.
Not all spools are the same. Some are designed for braid. Also, spool in the box? That's super cheap poor man way. Go to Amazon for $13.00 get a suction cup spooler and put proper tension on the spool please. 😊
Incorrect, the line spoolers (most) do allow you to put tension one the line (two screws on both sides) while spooling so you don't need to be grabbing the line with your hands or a rag etc and chafing it while spooling using a box. You want your tension coming off the line off the spool not from tension off your hand or rag etc. That's a poor man's method.
Sweetaccord the fact that you need a spool thing off Amazon says so much. Listen man I’m not incorrect and neither are you. What aver floats your boat brother. I simply choose to do the salt strong way and save time and money! Plus I’ve been applying tension on my line by hand for the longest time and I’ve had great success. There’s literally nothing wrong with the “smart man” box method. 🤓
Thanks for a terrific instructional video! The cardboard box and pencil technique for the win! A helpful wife, girlfriend, or child in a helpful mood works well too, and can be more fun, but failing that, whatever else, the box and pencil work and don't talk back.
Hey there,i was fishing now for about 14 yrs, I'm always looking for fishing tips, today's lesson was awesome,i learned something different, something new, something that will make me a better fisherman,HATS off to you and thanks very much
I like to tie the FG knot when connecting the backing to the braid. If you ever start to get low on braid, it can catch on the mono tag end when casting/pulling drag, even if you still have enough braid to make a cast
Great way to add line and i will no doubt try it. And always use the double uni as well but was surprised you did not wet the knot when you cinched them up
It's because he did a few testings and depending on the case, wetting was actually worse with saliva. The sample size was a few small, but for 10 tries, most of them were not as good and sometimes even worse
Shucks..im a novice and I was about to put the braid line straight on then I saw this....I never knew there's so much insight to just setting up the braid line on your reel.... your video is so informative and awesome thank you so much sir for all your amazing tips and tricks 👌🙏🙏🙏
Nice video. I do what you do. Then I attach the line to the fence and back off as far as I can then put a good stretch the line. Take out all the links. Works for me.
Just a tip: When loading a spinning reel the reel wraps in one direction. Make sure the Line comes off the spool in the same direction the reel wraps. No twist. I know you do it different but for years this worked best for me.
a better tip if you doesnt have extra spool from same type, 1.reel up first the PE to the reel, 2.reel up backing over the braid, 3.reel all on another spool (doesnt matter what) so the braid is over the backing, 4.reel up once more to get braid under the backing(monofilment), 5.reel up the actual reel >>> and there you go no waste of braid cuz you need all the braid ussualy :) knots and rubbing make you loose braid from time to time :) So if you have 2 spools its just 1 rewind but moust of the new reels doesnt come with 2 spools sadly. cheers gr8 video!
I like to do the same but then also wind the line onto a heavy overhead outfit placed in a rod holder. I then spool the spin reel by retrieving the line off that outfit with a little bit of drag pressure. That way the line is retrieved back on the spin reel under constant pressure.
@@BocaNejra I don’t usually stretch the whole spool because in the last step it is wound back onto the spin reel using the resistance from the drag on the overhead reel.
Very well done, learned some good tips regarding use of braded line .. like the knots show also.. i have arthritis so simple effective knots work well for me.
Good hints on spooling the line on the reel mate I have made a small portable spooling machine I can take everywhere but if I for get to take it with me the cardboard box trick is a smart idea I will use it’s the simple things in life that are the best. Regards Laurie from down under. Tight lines.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Robbie! Yes, that's the easiest way that I've been able to find to get a perfect re-spool every time (when I don't have a 2nd spool to do it the even easier way).
When I spool the mono, I can see these tiny twists on the spool. Is that going to cause me problems? I went ahead and added the braid, haven't casted yet.
I’m old school which means I’ve fished a ton of mono. Many years ago I started spooling line on all my reels with spool partially submerged in a 5 gal bucket half full of water. Seems to seat better and goes on nice and tight. I bend a piece of wire or coat hanger in a U to hook over the top of the bucket and keep the line partially submerged. Any benefit doing this with braid or just wind it on? Also, glad to see you recommended double wraps on braid side of double uni, most miss this point!
I have not found any advantage of soaking the braid before spooling it on. If anything, I would not recommend it because braid lasts so long that the leftover braid will likely be waiting for a very long time before seeing action (I typically keep my braid in for over a year even on the setups that I use very frequently), and I'd hate for mold to grow on it from getting soaked.
Luke you are the first guy I've ever met that said that even though I've been doing my reals like that for years because it just makes sense. When it comes off the spool it will have no twisting it the other way it will be twisted.
This is a great and straightforward vid. Thanks ya'll. Is this technique advised over a line spooling device (life from Piscifun or other) in keeping the line twists to a minimum? You mentioned on the vid that the twists are not an issue when on the reel. Thanks

Thank you so much you answered alot of questions. I was putting line on my pole and it got tangled and I had to cut the knot out. Is it ok that i tied the double uni knot to fix it?
Awesome. I ended up buyin a lews xfinity spinning reel took the crap line off of it throwing some 20lbs power pro braided line in it, wasn’t really sure steps to properly re-spool it, line ended up tangling so I took it all back out, put fluoralcarbon on it. Spooled that the wrong way too so now I’m gonna take it all back out again put some more power pro braided back on her, 30lbs, with some 8lbs fluoral so the match diameter. I didn’t think before to do the fluoral line first so not using soo much of the braided and the uni knot really helps as well. I haven’t fished in over 20 years since was a kid and never really learned properly I guess but this great video
I've been doing label side up for most of my life and then having to run the line out behind the boat to untwist new line. Thanks for sharing this. Do you swap ends on your braid after a year or two or just replace the 100 yards?
I find that a great way to save on the cost of braid is at the end of the season go to a football field, tie one end to the goal post and walk off all the braid on the reel. Go back to the goal post and get the line that was exposed to sun and use and tie it to the backer mono and wind it on the reel. Now you have the nice line that never saw the sun or wear on the bottom of the spool. The chance of getting down to this older line is slim.
I do the 3 2 1 method (line counter clockwise coming off of spool) so the line minimally twists when going onto a spinning reel. Never have issues with it twisting.
15:00 I really enjoyed the video, I have been spooling my reels both ways. I think this way is easier and faster. I have never used the box method before, but I will try. Thanks again! Tight Lines
Excellent video, nothing like several useful tips in one video. I finally discovered the mono base trick myself just to stop the braid from spinning, but then realized it does save lots of money on braid. I also do another double uni knot to a flourocarbon leader on my ice fishing rods, so I have 3 lines on one reel, but that knot is amazing! The polamar knot to the lure will break first.
Great video ,thanks for the tip's on spooling I measure out the braid as you suggested then after 12months I reverse it effectively doubling the life of the braid cheers tight lines.
Instead of the Cardboard Box an the pen, you can also take a old school phone book or any other heavy book and just run your Mono or braid through it. This way the spool won’t skip around and you get a good tension on your line while reeling it in.
Excellent video / please indicate if I can use that same principle for heavier line? 65 pds.? 0r 80 pds. Spool 50% of reel w/ mono and rest with braid?

I have a question about the mono backing. If I'm about to add 15lb braided line to a Penn 4000 size reel, should the mono backing be a higher lb test line/larger diameter? Or a lower one? Or does it even matter? I have some 8lb trilene mono I could use, but I'm not sure if I need something thicker.
rule of thumb is if you're spooling out to your backing you're already in trouble. You want at least the breaking strain of your braid in backing mono, if this means you're only putting 20 yards of backing on - so what? It's only there to stop the braid from slipping and to bring the terminal end closer to the brim. What you don't want happening is spooling out on a monster fish and losing your entire spool's worth of line because you cheaped out on backing material.
I think it depends on the maker and which side they put the label on. Just look at the spool and match the direction with that of the reel. It’s not that hard.
Cheers Mate. A question to you is. I spooled a 6 lbs Suffix 832 to my Shimano 2500. I use a 6 lbs Floro Cabbon leader. Would you recommend tying a FG or Slim Beauty ? In addition I'm experiencing a fair amount of wind knots. It was not a windy day and I was not casting into the wind either. Please advice. Cheers.
The one thing that I like to do after I put line on my reels is when I go out on my boat I let the line out until it's completely off the reel. Can I use my fingers and start cranking and since the line is in the water you don't have to worry about burning your fingers. I find that gives me a nice tight wrapping and I do that for all of my reels spinning and baitcasting. I do like your tip about not using all your expensive line to fill up the reel. Since it looks like winter might finally be over here where I live it's time to start putting new line on. I'm definitely going to take your advice and do that instead of using the good stuff all the way through. I enjoyed your video thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I have a shallow spool (0.6 pe goes in 200m) can I put just a few mono line? I know you cant tie the braided line to the spool directly, but I want to put the closest to 200m I can, so I dont want to put a lot of mono.
Thanks loads! I'm new to everything, and this was so helpful for me. Many great tips, and easy to understand information. Saved me some money and time that I would have spent getting it wrong! Thanks again. ☺

Great pro tips from Salt Strong!! I can't add much to the comments, that already were mentioned on this channel. Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Luke. I’ve always used mono. The Salt Strong posts have expanded my knowledge. This was a great post full of nifty tricks to economize.
An arbor knot is a slip-loop with a stopper knot in the tag end. You put it over the spool and cinch it up until the stopper knot comes up tight, then trim the tag. You install it so the reel winds the line on pulling the knot tight. Just thought I'd add that.
This is interesting. I’ve never had any issues doing a full braid spool without backing. I have the fuego 2500hd I use it heavily.
It won't happen every time, but going straight braid on the spool opens the door for the entire spool of line to spin uncontrollably around the arbor.
@@santiagohernandez.. yeah it's crazy what people will spend money on now a days lol. Amazon for a spooling sucker lul
Thanks for a terrific instructional video! The cardboard box and pencil technique for the win! A helpful wife, girlfriend, or child in a helpful mood works well too, and can be more fun, but failing that, whatever else, the box and pencil work and don't talk back.
Hey there,i was fishing now for about 14 yrs, I'm always looking for fishing tips, today's lesson was awesome,i learned something different, something new, something that will make me a better fisherman,HATS off to you and thanks very much
Great to hear! Thanks for watching!
Nice vid. Awesome tips on making most of line. All you guys show great info. Look forward to morr.
Much appreciated!
I appreciate the Salt Strong series. I use the Alberto Knot for line splices as it is smoother and stronger than the double uni knot results.
Great video....using braid for the first time this year. Thanks!!!
Excellent tip on cutting the line at 100yrds! Brilliant!
Thank you for watching!
I like to tie the FG knot when connecting the backing to the braid. If you ever start to get low on braid, it can catch on the mono tag end when casting/pulling drag, even if you still have enough braid to make a cast
Great way to add line and i will no doubt try it. And always use the double uni as well but was
surprised you did not wet the knot when you cinched them up
It's because he did a few testings and depending on the case, wetting was actually worse with saliva.
Never done that before, but now im confident. Thank you so much!
Glad we could help!
I always put the braid on first, then fill it to the max with mono. Then Stretch it out in the yard and reverse it. Also helps remove some twist.
I like to do the same but then also wind the line onto a heavy overhead outfit placed in a rod holder. I then spool the spin reel by retrieving the line off that outfit with a little bit of drag pressure. That way the line is retrieved back on the spin reel under constant pressure.
Only if you have a 150 yard garden! haha
@@BocaNejra I don’t usually stretch the whole spool because in the last step it is wound back onto the spin reel using the resistance from the drag on the overhead reel.
wow .. most excellent...wish i had seen this video before spooling a reel last week.. great lesson... will know better now.. thank you...👍🙏
Thanks a helpful video. God to see the uni knot as well. It's what I've used for a while and never let me down
Cool vid . Iv'e been known to jam the spool between couch cushions for tension
Very well done, learned some good tips regarding use of braded line .. like the knots show also.. i have arthritis so simple effective knots work well for me.
Glad it was helpful!
Me too. Tying knots is a nightmare. Sometimes takes almost an hour of frustration, by which time I've missed the tide😂
The best spooling tutorial I have ever seen!
I learn stuff everytime I watch your videos
So glad we could help!
You’re a great teacher bro. Keep it up!
Now this is just getting weird.
Also I just found this comment and found this funny. I am not going to be an internet stalker just saying hi.
@@dudeonacow9917 sweet! we are out there!!!
What model rod you got there? Looks good love the color.
So many make this seem so hard.
Well done.
Glad we could help!
Good hints on spooling the line on the reel mate I have made a small portable spooling machine I can take everywhere but if I for get to take it with me the cardboard box trick is a smart idea I will use it’s the simple things in life that are the best. Regards Laurie from down under. Tight lines.
Good tip!
Great tip Luke learn something everyday love that tip cutting the line never thought of that 🤔
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Robbie! Yes, that's the easiest way that I've been able to find to get a perfect re-spool every time (when I don't have a 2nd spool to do it the even easier way).
Really well explained. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
When I spool the mono, I can see these tiny twists on the spool. Is that going to cause me problems? I went ahead and added the braid, haven't casted yet.
How did it go??
Great point, Thx much
I do the same thing. Learned it from my grandpa, and never any problems.
Should I use a heavier monofil then the braided line?
Luke you are the first guy I've ever met that said that even though I've been doing my reals like that for years because it just makes sense. When it comes off the spool it will have no twisting it the other way it will be twisted.
This is a great and straightforward vid. Thanks ya'll. Is this technique advised over a line spooling device (life from Piscifun or other) in keeping the line twists to a minimum? You mentioned on the vid that the twists are not an issue when on the reel. Thanks

Do you always use a double uni for your braid to leader connection? Is it small enough and strong enough so that I can stom F’ing around with the fg?
That is an effective knot, we always use the FG
Thanks for the feedback!
Excellent tip. Thanks
yep, iwas looking for this, was going to say the same tip
Salt strong always has great instructional content. Thanks for all the concise help!!
Happy to help!
I like the walk out 100 yds, cut and retie idea. Hadn't heard anyone else mention it, THNX! 🎣😊👍🥳🎣
Thanks!
I do the 3 2 1 method (line counter clockwise coming off of spool) so the line minimally twists when going onto a spinning reel. Never have issues with it twisting.
Good work!
Just watched this again this year. Always a great tutorial whether originally or as a refresher.
15:00 I really enjoyed the video, I have been spooling my reels both ways. I think this way is easier and faster. I have never used the box method before, but I will try. Thanks again! Tight Lines
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent tutorial- thanks. Just starting out and there’s a lot for me to learn.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment Stu!
Excellent tips . . . answered my questions. Thank you!
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment!
Glad that you found the video helpful! 💪💪
Great video ,thanks for the tip's on spooling I measure out the braid as you suggested then after 12months I reverse it effectively doubling the life of the braid cheers tight lines.
Silly question, since I'm new to fishing, when you say reverse, you mean that you unspool everything, and use the opposite tip? This seems great!
Very useful video. An important issue easy to not give thought to.
Many thanks 🇬🇧
Thank you for making a fantastic, highly informative video. I learned so much from this. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Instead of the Cardboard Box an the pen, you can also take a old school phone book or any other heavy book and just run your Mono or braid through it. This way the spool won’t skip around and you get a good tension on your line while reeling it in.
Hi that's a great idea thanks 😊
Excellent video / please indicate if I can use that same principle for heavier line? 65 pds.? 0r 80 pds. Spool 50% of reel w/ mono and rest with braid?
Thanks for the question. Please check out the full blog and post your question there. That way, our team can respond back directly with their input and recommendation. You can find that here: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-spool-a-spinning-reel-with-braid/
Can you use that same double uni knot for leader?
You can but we have been using the fg knot for braid to leader connection. Check out our video on it!
Do you care mostly about thickness or resistance when using the mono backing? Thx
@@BlokeOnAMotorbike thanks
Thank you for showing some incredible tips 💋
Yet another stellar video, Luke. One question, in your experience does it matter if the line is spooled off the top or or bottom of the OEM spool?
I think it depends on the maker and which side they put the label on. Just look at the spool and match the direction with that of the reel. It’s not that hard.
Great advice and video! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Helpful video, thank you! What type of rod is that? Thanks!
Great question! Make sure to ask this over in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time.
Cheers.
Here's an article that might help: www.saltstrong.com/articles/minimize-wind-knots/
Does it matter at all what lb test monofilament you spool first? Like can I use 4 to 6 lb cheap mono and than 15lb bread or will it make a problem?
I'm thinking about this now. I think I would add a leader to this as well :)
Why not unspool the braided line and respool it in reverse I've done it this way and it works, I had to fish on a budget
Do you need to cover the reel in mono if your reel has a rubber gasket in the middle?
Many Suggest you still do. Can also save you money on braid!
Do you ever need to replace the mono base? Can you use a really cheap mono?
Sufix 832 is excellent line, I have 65 lb on 3 of my offshore reels, one had been on the reel for 7 years so far.
Thanks for the tip, I don’t have that problem my Penn Reels have a rubber inlay on the spool.
Glad to help!
Super helpful thanks brother!
Happy to help!
Which is better? Or what you really recommend? full mono? Or mono + braid?
I have a shallow spool (0.6 pe goes in 200m) can I put just a few mono line? I know you cant tie the braided line to the spool directly, but I want to put the closest to 200m I can, so I dont want to put a lot of mono.
Awesome very informative and easy to understand video , thank you for making this and making it look so easy.
You're very welcome!
Thanks loads! I'm new to everything, and this was so helpful for me. Many great tips, and easy to understand information. Saved me some money and time that I would have spent getting it wrong! Thanks again. ☺
Thank you for your video will use this method on my new rod
Thanks for checking it out!
Can I use fluorocarbon - Seaguar 8lb for example - instead of the mono?
