This is the best idiot proof spooling video I've seen yet. Thank you so much! I'm a new fisherman learning the basics and got a lot out of this informative video ❤❤❤
Well never do what this guy did cause if you cast out far and a large fish takes line right out, when you get to the end of it, the line will fly off, fish gone, line gone, rig gone! Look up better ways to tie it on including the number six knot.
yup, that's the way I was first taught. Putting mono on first. But the friend that told me to do that said he did that because braid was so pricey. But I have a super small reel I'm putting it on right now so I'm definitely not doing that. I didn't think it mattered though how you spooled braid. I've never had line twist or anything like I do with mono or fluorocarbon line. Interesting. This video is just what I needed! Thanks! 🤩
Much appreciated video! Just ordered my reel for my blowgun, and coming from small lake fishing in my past, braided was never on the table, not needed. But blowgun hunting allows me to get squirrels, birds, fish, frogs, etc., so I need that #30 braided wire which is the max rating on my reel. I wont need nearly 100 yards of the stuff, but will probably keep about 50 on there. Thanks for de-mystifying. Talking to old fisherman about lures and lines and rods and such is a just an argument anymore!
If your reel gets wet it's very likely to start slipping. I always tie it on with slip knots and go extremely tight to begin with and end with medium pressure.
I've never had it slip before but I still used a mono backing when spooling my spinning reel yesterday. I watched a video on how to tie the two lines together.
That’s incorrect! I don’t care how tight you make the braid if you have a rod or reel that sits for a while overtime whether it was put on tight or not, the braid will eventually slip. You either need backing or a piece of tape @@alexanderzatusevschi4309
Braid slipping is definitely 100% not “a myth”. I’ve experienced it first hand. More than once. When I started using a mono backer at the beginning of the spool the line slip stopped. Thankfully most my reels now have “ braid ready spools with rubber inserts. And I still use mono backer
I back with a short mono because very cold weather will cause the entire ream of braid to rotate on the spool because the spool shrinks in the cold, I fish Colorado.
The mono backing thing started not because braid slips. It was because braid used to be twice as expensive so people would buy 150 yards of braid and fill the rest with mono. 400+ yards of braid cost a fortune
Forget lable up. Just match the spin to the reel facing towards eachother. Not every line is spooled same way. Counter clockwise is typically the right way
Just put some tape on the arbor of the spool for less risk of the line slipping. 30 seconds. (Watched the vid to see if the VR was spooling nice or lumpy & he didn’t show it at the end. lol)
What i don't understand is why is it important to spool it up tightly is it's gonna go on loosely when you throw a lightweight lure with little resistance?
@@tshark2787 Thanks for the explanation. So that would mean that if you change from a lightweight lure with low resistance to a heavy lure with high resistance the might be issues?
You've fished 20 years? I hate to tell you but that makes you an Old Timer. I'm 72 and still strugle to face that I am. Thanks for the great presentation.
Daiwa J Braid slips on a metal spool, especially the very thin diameters, 20 turns of cheap 6lb mono first is no biggie before spooling your expensive braid. ✌️
I use a single layer of electrical tape, a simple knot to make a tiny loop, and invert the string through the loop. You'll have one side that bights into the reel and one side that does nothing but spin. When you start to real in, there no guesswork haha
I'm having trouble tightening the initial knot so that it doesn't just spin on my reel. It's just sitting on the reel and it spins with tension. I've tried getting it tight 3 times now, and there's always play
How come I haven't seen your product in stores?? I only seen it on Facebook and amazon. I have seen reviews of it here on RUclips and unfortunately they are not the best
Point your left and right index finger directly towards each other in front of your face. They need to both move in the same direction or they will twist. If your left finger spins towards you, your right finger does too. Don't twist your line it will cost you in presentation, frustration, and fish.
It seems that you forgot to mention engaging the bail. As a newbie, this caused me no end of frustration while trying to follow this video. I found another video and got the job done immediately.
My knot just spun round and round with my reel when I was trying to take line. Reel spool was too smooth. So I’m knotless right now but hey I shouldn’t let a fish get over a football field on me anyways
I've never used a mono backer for any reels whether they're casting or spinning. Never had braid come off. Then again you should have plenty of line on the reel in the first place. If you're down to the reel when you cast, put more line on but I know common sense isn't very common nowadays🤷🏻♂️
Relying on a label to put your line on in the correct direction is dumb. Manufactering mistakes can cost you a 30 dollar Power pro spool. Use your head and notice that if the line comes off of the spool to the left it will go on without twisting on a reel retreaving to the left. Bill Dance explained it 30 years ago. I did my best ; )

Just bought some of the patriot line a day ago, going to be the first time fishing with braided line, can’t wait!!
Small piece of electric tape even lays flater than a knot, preventing the dreaded warped spool. Lol
I've actually had braid slip on my spinning reel...and it happened to my buddy on his level wind. It's not a myth.
Same here out here ocean fishing in Oregon
It has to do with how tight the braid is originally spooled, if you spool it tight, it won’t slip, otherwise it can and will.
If your reel gets wet it's very likely to start slipping. I always tie it on with slip knots and go extremely tight to begin with and end with medium pressure.

gotcha!!
Power Pro used to supply sticky foam things to put on the reell to prevent the slipping, I've found electrical tape does the same.
Same here. I had it slip while winter steelhead fishing. It was very frustrating

Thanks for info I never used braided but mono & everything you said is what I've been doing with mono
Thank you for this great video. Is that a Van Staal?
Yes, it is!
Counter clockwise off spool is the reason for label up. Not all spools with label up work that way. So make sure and just dont assume.
Hell yah ! 🔥🍻Nice vid ! Thanks !!!
I must have done something wrong because I have had braid slip when I had a large tarpon hooked. A few yards of mono goes a long way for me.
thats good!
YUP... a no brainer!! The muskie shop where I live (Thorne Bros!!) also suggests that!
Just use a layer of electrical tape and you won't risk the braid cutting into the mono
Guy backing helps with two things.... Less braid on the spool becusse of cost or not needed. & Casting. The fuller the spool less drag
Appreciate the insight!

a good way to stretch your line just hook it to a tree and walk out your line tighten the drag and reel it in
instead of putting mono first you can use a piece of scotch or electrical tape (boom)
I'm curious as to line coming off the spool rotating vs stationary and line coiling off? Any significant effect on the line on the reel? Thanks.
What i don't understand is why is it important to spool it up tightly is it's gonna go on loosely when you throw a lightweight lure with little resistance?

Me too! That’s why you need to start it with mono or Floro and then splice into braid

Mono backing saves cash.
How much does it save, $0.24?
@@robertherman1146 When you have 50 reels that $0.24 adds up my friend.
That was a good demonstration of how not to put braid on your reel.

And yet you offer zero information
Can someone please explain how this works cuz it doesn’t
Apply 1 layer of electrical tape to your spool then tie it up and reel it in.
Slipping definitely exists. Usually on conventional reels though.

I think u never hook something big because if u did it will slip on you backing mono it's no myth!
Backing mono risks being cut from the braid. Tape or a reel that had rubber helps better
And ultimatly stress from extreme twisting.
The knot just slips 😂😂😂 it doesn’t hold at all
