Oh, I really want to see the next video now. Removing line twist on the water would be very handy to know.
CA complicates how to avoid line twist for17 minutes, when all you really have to do is get it on the spool and if it has twist, run it out behind the boat or run it out and walk it around the yard and it'll untwist.
I always just put the spool of line in a bucket of water and kept tension on the line with my thumb and index finger, might not be the right way but it seemed to work fine.
The whole clockwise/counter clockwise thing only works if you do indeed have the spool laying flat on the surface with the label up or down. The way you had it whether the line is coming from top or bottom, the spool is spinning both clockwise and counter clockwise depending on which face you're looking at. Hence the camera angle show here front of the boat looking toward the aft), the spool is actually spinning clockwise. but if you look aft to front then the spool will be spinning ccw. Just food for thought
Thought the same thing after watching this. All that talk of how important it is for it to come off the reel the right way was thrown in the garbage when he started taking it off straight like that.
I see it spinning clockwise also.

Good tips in the video. It would be nice if you showed the first knot in anchoring your mono to the spool that would be the first process of making sure your mono is flat and evenly wound thanks for video.
An "arbor knot" is enough. After trimming the loose end, push that 1st circle of line to the top or bottom of the spool. Don't apply full pressure until after a few turns of the handle.

My spin reels have become my nemesis I actually wasted an entire (small) spool of flouro yesterday spooling one of them twice because of the twist....it is bare again with the same. I have watched vid after vid...it's been very frustrating. I will try your method & I thank you for the info.

Sounds like every sponsored fisherman's dream request. We used to say when I was in the biz, cold place, "You can always sell another jacket".
I put a chopstick through my spool, sit in a chair, hold the stick with my bare feet and press it into a carpet runner. That gives me tension and it’s fast.
Where do you get that size pipe cleaner?
Question, if I may.. I am spooling my new Saragosa 8000 with 40 lb. braid, should I use the 10 lb. mono backing as you did for the lower weight braid in this episode? or should that be increased? As always, thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Hi CA, I love everything about my Sustain fj 3000.. except the line roller bearing!
It seems to freeze up every other month and I have to keep replacing it.
Is there anything I should be doing to prevent this or is it possible to use a bushing instead to have it last longer?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Make sure you clean after saltwater use..I use muc off bike cleaner after each session. Designed to not strip grease and dissolves salt very effectively! Have only have to replace line roller bearing once in 5 years!
Rinse off thoroughly with fresh water and dry reel properly before storing.
That drying is going to take a few days.

How many wraps usually do you want to do on the reel for backing usually for spinning reels? I've heard about 15-20 turns of the handle regardless of spool size. I think that may be wrong but what's your input? If you don't mind me asking.
He said 15%. I didn't know whether he was talking volume or yards, or something else. U hate to say that how I do this is I run on however I want to and then I pull it all off, and make whatever adjustments I want. It is different with every reel backing and line. I don't know if that messes up with braid. I mostly fly fish. With fly gear I just walk around the lawn pulling it off. With spinning I just pay it out behind my boat. But I would wonder what happens to line twist or the pack.
I also will just walk it back on a field. It is just a process to learn once, and write it down. I don't get new reels from my sponsors every year, so I am going to run the same setup for a long time.
I alway over fill my spools slightly.90% of the time i will get 1-2 Wind Knots aka-(Assholes) as my Late Uncle Ronnie used to call them.After that the spool ends up being perfect and very rarely will i get another Wind Knot (Asshole) in my line.My theory for past 40 years has always been ide rather have to much line than not enough.Even if the spool is beveled at the top.Friction is still friction and the least amount will get the furthest cast.Great Video!!!

When the line spool is held axially and allowed to spin while removing line from it, the CW/CCW thing seems 100% irrelevant to me. I just don't get how there's so much confusion over this (I'm a new fisherman)... If a spool lies flat on the floor, and you pull line up towards the ceiling, regardless of which direction it's unwrapping from the spool there's going to be twist in that line. The idea of having it come of CCW in that layout makes sense to me, because it matches the direction the bail will be wrapping that line back into the reel spool. But if the line spool is spinning, regardless of line coming off top or bottom, the spin of the spool itself is removing those twists as the line pays off the spool. At the moment that line leaves a spool that is allowed to spin freely, there is "no twist" in it. Let the bail do it's work putting it on the reel spool though, and now it has gone onto your reel spool with twist saved in the line. I understand there's a lot of imperfection that we end up living with on a spinning reel, including the fact that we virtually always have some amount of line twist that needs to be managed. But I am still lost as to how to make this shit work right 😂 I've meticulously spooled braid onto a few reels in every single manner I've seen suggested, and I'm getting twisted line either way. I still haven't had a wind knot or anything that shut me down for more than a minute on the water, haven't had to clip any lines... But it's still driving me crazy. Guess I'll pick up tenkara 😂
You've got it all wrong. The line coming off your spool is not counterclockwise or clockwise. It's coming off straight regardless if its coming from the top or bottom. The reel is creating twist, but because the line is thin it doesn't matter and also because the small reel doesn't accept a long line.

How often do you replace your braid for your customer reels and your personal reels?
It will mater a lot on how heavy the use is. Are the fish not pulling out line, or pulling out a hundred yards. I can give up a fish every few years, he can't have a line break for the trophy of a lifetime for a guy paying whatever per day. Do you use a lure clip, or tie on every time, and do you use a leader that you replace often, saving the line. How often do you re-rig. Some folks hardly change their lure...
One thing I do is test the breaking strength of my lines. I used to just add sand to a bucket, that was held up with a fish hook through the handle. When it fell, I would weight the bucket. Do it fresh and then try again after the line has had some miles. If it works great, isn't damaged, and it test, you get better info than if you ask an expert who fishes totally different conditions.
What is the purpose of using mono backing?
It's much cheaper than braid, has a thicker diameter, and will work reasonably well if and when needed.

Braid doesn’t grind as well and can lead to the line free spinning without mono backing
CA is one o those tubers that can milk 17 minuts out of a 7-minute video.
Why put backing? I always spool them full of braid.

What’s the reason for the backing?
If you were to fill the entire reel with 10# braid it would likely take 350+ yards of it to fill it up completely. You'll MAYBE only use the first 100 yards of that line. Now, if you fill the reel around 50% with mono, you'll only need around 150 yards of braid, which is still double what you would ever need for any inshore fishing. Saves you pretty much $20 for every reel you want to spool.
I use braid, it has no memory. 😅
