I recently got back into fishing myself because my 7yr old son is interested in it. I just bought him his first spincast combo rod and reel @TylerReelsFishing
@@TylersReelFishing in this video you recommend using 15lb Fluorocarbon as a good all round on a baitcaster. Would you recommend using braid to a 15lb leader, or are you suggesting spooling your reel with all fluoro?
TYLER! *in my texan country voice* you’ve done it again, thank you for breaking it down for us & sharing your knowledge. I always recommend your channel to anyone who is new to bass fishing for this exact reason! May God continue to bless you and your family, always. P.S. congratulations to you and your beautiful wife on y’all’s pregnancy. I hope y’all are enjoying every moment, the little kicks and movements are truly magical and such a blessing.
When it comes to line lb tests, you also have to remember that your rod flexes and bends. That takes a lot of shock out of the line so a 10lb line can easily handle a 20lb fish. Also, the more line you have out, the more weight the system can handle. Also, a 10lb fish that’s trying to get away, weighs a lot more than 10lb…which is where the reel drag comes into play. Also, a 10lb fish doesn’t weigh 10lbs in the water. You can catch a 50lb fish on 8lb test if you take your time and wear it out. Where the line strength matters most is when you get the fish to the boat. If you try to lift a 20lb fish on 10lb line, as soon as it is out of the water, the full weight comes onto your line, the rod is at maximum bend, so it’s not providing any shock protection and the line is at its shortest, so something has gotta give. It’s either gonna be your line or your knots. So get a landing net :)
I just started fishing seriously a few months ago and I’ve only been bass fishing about a month and I kept hearing about “bass are curious so throw different lures they’re stupid and will just try to grab it” and I didn’t realize how true that was till I fished a private pond and you could genuinely just tell by the way the responded to it that they had never seen anything like my crank bait, not only was it amazing to see the fish follow my lure all the way up to the shallow and be able to see them actually eat it but it also just gave me a chance to observe the bass behavior up close to what my lure would do

I want someone to make a video about 1 pole, 1 line, do it all fishing set up. Doesn't matter if I wanna throw a crank bait on or a plastic. Show me the best all around fishing setup.
I fish rivers and creeks mainly with low current but sometimes heavy cover , so I always use at least 20lb braid, unless there's rocks then I use fluoro
My friend caught a 36lb blue cat on a 12 or 14lb mono, on a 7" Md H Ugly Stick, when I asked he said he couldn't remember which lb test it was, but that is still pretty good.
I wish this video came out last week :D I'm a total newbie and my baitcaster just came monday. Went down to the local tackle shop, got some trilene for the base of the spool, and then braid and fluorocarbon for main/leader. For lures I got worms in neutral, black and white silhouettes, and a couple of bright types, some crayfish and a popper. Based on that I asked the guy at the store what pound test. He said 10 would be fine. I get home, start practice casting in the yard and my line keeps snapping and launching my frog. (I did the tension setup, etc. so the lure drops to the ground when the switch is released). My knots are lasting. But the lines (both the braid and the fluoro snapped) casting the froggy. I lightly sanded the guides to remove any burrs. It's been a LONG time since I fished, and I grew up flycasting, so I don't think I'm snapping the line too hard on cast. At least I can time my thumb pressure so I don't backlash :)
And even though that frog has practically no weight, a bit of googling said to run it on 30 lb test. Doh. So I guess I gotta go get some stronger line.
@@TylersReelFishingWait so what should you use for Texas rigs. I've been using just pure floro since it sinks but is that right for all lures that sink?

I use seaguar basix as my liter line and powerpro 30lb braid for my main line. I do want to spool one of my combos with straight flouro so this is gonna be a awesome video 💪🏼💪🏼
My mono line is usually 2lbs or 4lbs for my ultralight setups when I'm going for panfish with the kids. The lines I've used my entire life were all less than 10lbs. My grandpa taught me that I could bring whatever fish in that I caught with that line. The largest difference would be how much I could force the fish around. If I had very strong line, I could yank the fish out of whatever junk it's in. With less strong line I need to tire the larger fish before bringing them in. What type of line AND how many lbs. test would you recommend for this set-up? Thanks! In the ocean, I'm typically catching rockfish, CA Halibut and an occasional barracuda.
Hey Tyler. One question. For someone like me that loves to fish. But doesn’t do it enough to have 2-12 rods with me every time I go on the water. That doesn’t have the money or time to go out and get a boat to fish off of and get to the best places in the water. What is the best money friendly rod and reel and line combo that can still help elevate my game. But not break my budget and make me feel like I overpaid for something that I don’t do enough?
I remember your weighted vs weightless video so i threw a weightless seiko. I was on a spinning reel and there was not enough tension. And it was all loose. Also didn’t fall fast at all. Was it because i was using floating mono?
You probably already know this but my dad taught me a long time ago when tightening up a knot is to lick the line if it’s dry to help with friction and a tighter knot
Is there not a middle ground where braided line with a floro leader would work? Seems like you would get the casting distance and durability with braid, with the obfuscation of floro.
Hey Tyler I have a shimano caius 2024 with the Diawa legalis 6’4 medium heavy and i just got a really bad backlash and i need to change the line so what do you think. I also have my brakes on 4
Do you think throwing straight fluro on a baitcaster is “harder” than throwing braid? Meaning more backlashes, more memory problems in the line and what not?
I've got a couple of questions. Can you successfully fish jigs like football jigs and casting jigs on mono? And are there certain rod guides more braid friendly than others?
Hopefully you will answer me ... I have an old fishing rod and reel , with recommendation for rod 15 lb line monofilament and max 1/3 - 1 oz lure , reel 0.40 mm filament .... Can i use on it 25 lb braided line ? .... I have a lot of big fish in the area i am fishing can i upgrade to braided 25 lb ?
You think it’s okay that on my Texas rig rod (a 7 ft medium heavy fast action bait caster) I use 20 lb mono backing, 25 lb braid and a 12 lb fluoro leader 👀?
just got a baitcaster and spooled it, went out to fish with it learning how to cast and take out backlash, after around an hour my reel and rod handle started getting wet from reeling in, is this normal
i have a spinning rod that’s 7’ M X fast, line is 8-17 and lure is 3/8-3/4. i want to use the 6lb mono backing but what should be the main and/or leader line? another question what lures and techniques should i use with this rod as well??? really needing some help on this
I’m 13 and need some advice please. I have a shimano slx dc,I can cast it great and have the breaks on 1. Have been using 10 lb mono but just put on and used 15 lb braid for the first time and it still casts great but i am worried the fish can see the line because it is blue. Do you think it will matter

if my rod is rated for 20-30 line, can i use a 40 lb leader line without worrying about it
Great information thank you
Very welcome!
Good one Tyler
Do you use a fluorocarbon leader on your bait casters too?
Is there not a middle ground where braided line with a floro leader would work? Seems like you would get the casting distance and durability with braid, with the obfuscation of floro.
Yes, absolutely. I just don’t trust that leader knot enough for big braid to big fluoro
More memory for sure, but not less backlashes
You forgot to mention Bank, what should I use when I only do bank fishing.
15lb fluoro
thanks bro
Good job!!
I've got a couple of questions. Can you successfully fish jigs like football jigs and casting jigs on mono? And are there certain rod guides more braid friendly than others?
You can fish anything on any type of line. Some are just better than others
Great video Ty
Glad you enjoyed it!
😂 “if your fish are dumb” had me dead 😂😂😂
Cause some are 😂
Thanks you ❤
You're welcome! Glad you liked it!
“You can do a lot with a little” remember that boys
Lol
Do your brakes or anything on your reel have to be tightened down or loose when spooling braid to your bait cast reel?
Brakes, no. Drag, yes
You think it’s okay that on my Texas rig rod (a 7 ft medium heavy fast action bait caster) I use 20 lb mono backing, 25 lb braid and a 12 lb fluoro leader 👀?
I’d use 6lb mono for your backing, but yes that works. As long as you are tying the FG as your connection knot from braid to flouro
And once again, you help me get a little closer to getting better.. lol.. great video..
Glad to hear it!
I like to use Daiwa Flurocarbon Hidden Concept.
My pros here What's the best brand and braided for spinning rods?
Seaguar smackdown. I have it linked below
@@TylersReelFishing appreciate you champ
just got a baitcaster and spooled it, went out to fish with it learning how to cast and take out backlash, after around an hour my reel and rod handle started getting wet from reeling in, is this normal
i have a spinning rod that’s 7’ M X fast, line is 8-17 and lure is 3/8-3/4. i want to use the 6lb mono backing but what should be the main and/or leader line? another question what lures and techniques should i use with this rod as well??? really needing some help on this
any help is appreciated
I’m 13 and need some advice please. I have a shimano slx dc,I can cast it great and have the breaks on 1. Have been using 10 lb mono but just put on and used 15 lb braid for the first time and it still casts great but i am worried the fish can see the line because it is blue. Do you think it will matter
No, won’t matter that much
@@TylersReelFishing Thank you
