So many new options to try now. Very eye opening. Keep doing what you’re doing. Hopefully over time, we’ll get a great database and resource to refer to when thinking about line for specific fishing application.
I've been a Power Pro user for over 15 years now. I never held any delusions that it was the best braid, but it always served me well at a reasonable price. Last summer, my best friend, whom I taught to fish, went on an international fishing trip to the wilds of Ontario Canada chasing smallmouth, walleye, pike, and musky. He asked me to help him get outfitted for his trip, and one of the things he wanted to do was re-spool all the reels he was bringing, just for the peace of mind that he's got all fresh line. Naturally, I steered him toward Power Pro... He wanted 20# on one of his reels, and he had some lighter and some heavier too. Once he began fishing with the 20# line, he said he was breaking off a lot... And it wasn't breaking at his leader knot either. It got so bad that his guide began to suspect the line was faulty... They stripped some line from the reel and were able to pull it until it broke with bare hands! So they tried to do the same with some 10# power pro and they couldn't break it. When he came home, we tried the same thing... Sure enough, I could break the 20# line, but not the 10#! We began to speculate why/how this could happen... Maybe they put lighter line in the package? Nope, the diameter of the 20# was definately larger than the 10# line and smaller than the 30# line. We figured it must be a bad batch, and got through quality control... Anyways, this is a long way of saying there's at least two anglers looking for a new brand of braid for next season, and we appreciate your work and sharing your findings.
If ever that happens with Power Pro or any major brand of line, always contact the company and explain the issue. Most companies will either refund your money or give you a replacement product. I did this with a fishing reel once!
What's just as important as the line is the quality and smoothness of the spool it comes on. If that spool is rough where the line goes, then that line is damaged. I guess that the same is true for the factory equipment too.
I've been ice fishing with the Power Pro Ice-Tec 8lb for 3 seasons now and can confirm it is a great ice fishing line. The jagged edges of the ice holes have not cut it yet and I have not lost a fish due to line failure.
That gliss I used once in lighter applications on spin reel. Line breaks down quickly I will never use it again. Although it’s casts superbly it doesn’t last.
Should be some ranking for line thickness to breaking strength. One of the main advantages to braid is its thin diameter and superior strength at those sizes.
The Gliss monotex frays like I've never seen before. The line will be 4x the thickness after a day of fishing. I'm pulling it through cover but I've never had a braid come apart on me like this one has.
All lines on the website have a price per spool and the length of line on it. You can easily divide one by the other to get cents per meter. But as for "value", i guess that's subjective based on what you feel makes a line good value. Is it outright strength, diameter, suppleness, abrasion...? I feel that a lot of people will have different criteria so trying to come up with a formula that pleases everyone will be very difficult.
The valuation refers to the purchase between what is declared by the manufacturer and the value obtained, however, the manufacturer can declare whatever he wants. A manufacturer could declare 2 kilos of resistance for a PE2 and the value obtained could be 4 kilos, which is +100%, and would be at the top of the resistance ranking, however, 4 kilos is a ridiculously low value. for a PE2. To really know how good a fishing line is, you must compare the lines with each other taking a common diameter. For example, buy all the lines taking as a reference 0.20mm of real value (not declared).
No ranking that i do is based on anything claimed by the manufacturer, as i know that is way off 99.9% of the time, so I believe that addresses your first point. The % of max break (for abrasion and FG) is always against the measured maximum break, not the claimed strength. I will compare it to the claimed maximum but its really just for interest sake, and holds no relevance to any calculations. Second, your point about comparing lines of equal diameter is exactly what i am doing by using tensile strength. This takes into account any diameter differences and standardizes it to a common unit of measure so we can compare all lines independent of their actual diameter and breaking strain.
@@thelinelaboratory Thanks for the clarification. I'm confident now. Allow me one more suggestion: When you have prepared the ranking, you have taken into account the values: tensile strength, knot resistance FG, abrasion resistance, however, I suggest you add the value "uniformity of the line diameter" since this value is related to the casting distance. This is something that all fishermen look for in a fishing line so it is an important value. Thank you for your hard work. This is really one of the best fishing channels I know (and not even a fish appears 😄 )
Appreciate the feedback. The uniformity of the line is something I measure, but call it "out of roundness". It is listed for any line that's been reviewed in the last few months since I introduced that test, but I don't have it as a parameter in the summary table for all braids. I need to work out a better way to summarize all the data, there is so much that it's a challenge. FYI - I find any line with out of roundness less than 10% what I would call top tier for this metric.
I love how professionally and unbiased your tests are made. However the only test you may not be able to do is longevity/durability. I have used the Gliss in 17kg, this "braid" is great to cast, super strong and very thin, but after a few times of use the line starts to split - the individual strands become loose, seems like the material/process the use to bind the strands is not strong enough and this line is not braided. Every time i went fishing I had to discard the first 10-20 feet. I think this is why such a great line was not so great after all and hence the demand fell. For me my go to line has been the Sufix 832 for a few years now.
Great review! One thing I am more interested is the casting distance, and ability to avoid wind knot for thin lines among different brands with the same claimed diameter, but I guess without a sponsorship from the fishing line manufactures, it's almost impossible to do. I am speculating similar price of Japanese brand PE lines will have similar performance since they probably have similar manufacturing process and material unless one has a patented unique process/material.
Casting and wind knots are a very hard thing to test reliably, there are a lot of factors that can impact both. I would love to be able to test every line of every strength rating but its almost impossible as you said. not only does it cost a fortune, each line takes a couple of hours to test thoroughly. One could assume that lines in the same range by the same manufacturer would be similar as they would probably use the same (or similar) raw materials and be braided in the same way. Saying that, even a slight change in the braiding process can result in a disproportionate diameter change, thus affecting the tensile strength calculation which means it would be different for that line compared to other weights of the same line.
Thanks for sharing the video . I enjoyed watching this. May I have recommendation which you could consider to add more criteria besides your criteria’s - same size of braided fishing line - float and sinking line must be different in your test - X8 and X12 is not same - shocking strength - absorb water - water cut strength of line - long durability Thank you
i think you should test how smooth is a line and how well it handles saltwater after a trip or two. i know its not simple but it would make choosing braids so much easier
4 out of 5 top performance braid were izanas made in Japan which still exist in the market, while the 1st rank is monotex made in Germany which is very hard to find in the market. Where is spectra braid made in USA?

is yours getting fat/fraying after some use? The strands on my 40lb spool after just a day of use come apart i guess from riding the line guides or getting pulled through cover.
Hello sir . Please help to spill the number that you use to count the psi so i know how to count just for a little bit with the other line that you still didn't make a test sir . Please 🙏
Anything over 100lbs I am not able to accurately test on my equipment with the current setup. Saying that i do have access to a tensile machine that can test way beyond this but its quite a way from me so i only make trips every now and then. I have tested a few up and over the 100lb using that machine but i am yet to publish all the results as the tests are incomplete.
We are based in Australia and ice fishing really isn't a thing here so we don't have anything available. We did test some of the Power Pro icetec which was amazing on knot strength and abrasion resistance, but that's it.

If we could work out some reliable method to predict a wind knot then absolutely. From what I know it can be caused by many factors anything from line construction to the way it is spooled. With that many variables any kind of reliable prediction may be tough.
@@thelinelaboratory hmm… yea I was thinking about that and don’t have a good way of showing that. Maybe weight of a fixed length of line and time to fall set distance for that length??? Bonjour, merci pour votre travaille. Je vous regarde depuis la France. Si vous devez conseiller 1 seul tresse,la quelle conseiller vous ? Merci encore 😊
Thanks for watching! Currently my favorite is the new Varivas 8. It's great quality and widely available. I have another spool of PE2 to test so we will see how that performs.
Interesting tests for sure but have a hard time taking them serious when Gliss wins. That stuff had terrible abrasion resistance, do any search on it and you will see its worthless when it comes to abrasion.
@@thelinelaboratory after thinking about it more your testing new line of course and Gliss shortcomings is after 1 or 2 fishing trips it starts to split and fray and that’s probably why it has no durability
Yes I test new line, that's the only reasonable way to compare lines otherwise you have to standardize their use which is very difficult when I am testing dozens of lines per month. I have also used it for a few hours per week for the last 10months and found zero issues. Everyone will have a difference of opinion based on their experience.
Interesting, my user experience with gliss was awful. So much that I requested a refund and got it. It was awful for knot strength and abrasion resistance.
Diameter info and more stats are all available on the website for the lines that we have published, so I didn't include every detail for every line in the video. For the ratings, I rate them purely on their performance in the tests, not how accurate their marketing department is.
Gliss is not worth it. Tried it years ago and like others mention it frays easily and falls apart under the slightest abrasion. Also wind knots like no other.
@@liambird5349 I have just put the Varivas 8 on a couple of reels but i need to some time to use it and see how it goes in the real world, so right now i cannot confidently say.
Yep, sorry for wasting your time. If you would like to send me a spool of every currently available line in your country then I would be happy to recompile the list.
Not a fan of the AI voice, semi American accent and some of those pronunciations are off. There’s one letter ‘f’ in Sufix so pronouncing it suffix doesn’t sound right. Soofix would be a better fit I think.

How can Gosen Casting cannot on list interesting Zero Wind knots so Thin..Like 1.5 Gosen 0.216 same thin as Jbraid 0.16..Zero wind knots for real..
I haven't tested it as yet so I cannot classify it. As soon as I get my hands on some I certainly will.
@@thelinelaboratory Gosen will change top 5 definitely..
Im thinking of doing some sort of braided line tier list for value vs performance if I have your oernission to usenyoir data to assist
Sure, shoot me a pm and we can work something out
Bonjour, merci pour votre travaille.
Merci pour votre réponse
please try ASSO 8X Braid
really nice job guys. what should I buy, to have a 0.22 braid? my god...
Its almost impossible to know if you just look at the box, but we have tested the Daiwa Expedition PE1 at 0.215mm and the YGK Upgrade 30lb at 0.230mm.
Do you think I should choose Daiwa J-Braid Grand, Shimano Kairiki or Sufix 832?
I haven't used the Shimano personally, but for outright performance the 832 seems better but the Grand is smoother.
@@thelinelaboratory Thank you very much
Hey what about jof x12 😢😢😢
I have some jof x8 but yet to test it. Hope to get to it early in the new year.
please do a test on shimano tanatoru
Interesting tests for sure but have a hard time taking them serious when Gliss wins. That stuff had terrible abrasion resistance, do any search on it and you will see its worthless when it comes to abrasion.
My testing disagrees. Can you direct me to any decent test that shows this?
There should be stated/actual diameter too. for example, majorcraft dangan has +181% in diameter, how can it even be top4
Este canal me encanta 🥰 muchas gracias por todo felices fiesteas y feliz año nuevo un abrazo .
Test the new varivas variant now this is no longer available
We have released a video review on the newer Varivas 8 not long ago
Just watched it thanks going to give it ago , use j braid on all my reels would you in your opinion think it’s worth swapping
@@liambird5349 I have just put the Varivas 8 on a couple of reels but i need to some time to use it and see how it goes in the real world, so right now i cannot confidently say.
Gliss durability isn't great compared to powerpro.
😊
Sufix is best
really , you tested lines in different weights , some aren't available anymore or only in australia . pretty much a worthless exercise
Yep, sorry for wasting your time. If you would like to send me a spool of every currently available line in your country then I would be happy to recompile the list.
@@thelinelaboratory seriously though youve heard of compareing apples to oranges . thats what you did .
It's so bad accuracy.
Not a fan of the AI voice, semi American accent and some of those pronunciations are off. There’s one letter ‘f’ in Sufix so pronouncing it suffix doesn’t sound right. Soofix would be a better fit I think.
It pronounced it perfectly? Atleast that's how we say it in Australia.
@@yep.fishing Does everyone in Australia wear latex gloves to handle their packaged fishing line?😆
It's purely for contrast between the white background and the box/spool/line
