Fassbender speaking french, english, spanish and german in the same movie. Plus the masterclass in acting. This man is something else. He's on par with the likes of Christoph Waltz and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Hh also spoke Polish in one of the X men movies (not sure if it was this one). And tho his Polish wasnt that good, it's still impressive, given how hard the language is for non native speakers.

Magneto is by far one of the most complex and nuanced villains ever. He's sympathetic, has a reason for his hate, but often goes to far. You quickly go for rooting for him, to horrified, then back. You just never know which Magneto you get.
Which would explain why it was hard for me to get into X Men movies as a kid because there were always times when I didn't know whose side Magneto was on

This should have been the whole movie lol. When I saw this, I didn't care about the X-Men anymore. I literally just wanted to see Magneto going John Wick on Nazis lol. Already, an infinitely better movie than what we got :P
The appeal is due to many of us wishing we were capable of that level of cruelty towards evil. Without that ability, evil thrives. To counter evil we must be capable of cruelty without becoming a cruel person.

I love how the atmosphere had a complete 180 when Erik said "they didn't have a name". Going from "just sitting there, doing stuff and enjoying life" to "our life is in massive danger"
@Fandy Ricky Those imprisoned in concentration camps were tattooed with a serial number and were forbidden from identifying themselves by name to guards. Instead they had to identify themselves by their serial numbers. Magneto has one such number tattooed on his arm. In effect, their names were taken from them. Those two men were in the picture with Shaw, the man who killed Magneto's mother in a concentration camp. They knew what it meant when Magneto said that his parents were also from Dusseldorf and did not have names.
It always bothers me that the guys immediately realize where this is going, but instead of any self-preservation, they go "we should finish our beers and see how this plays out, this guy seems pretty chill!"

"Blood and Honor. Which do you care to shed first?" "Please, we were under orders!" "Blood, then." I love that the implication of this is that they already shed their honor being "under orders".
The honor part is that he wants them to admit what they did by choice and it was wrong. They don’t shed it because they say it was just orders, trying to appear better than they are. It’s a facade of having honor, and refusing to admit they don’t have any. So they shed blood instead.
We have both Magnetos and both Xaviers basically some of the best actors who have ever lived. As amazing as Fassbender is, how can you NOT mention Ian McKellen?
Why hasn't Mathew Vaughn directed any other X-Men films? This could have been a scene out of an Oscar winning wartime period drama. The setup, the tension, the blocking, and the angles are all superbly thought out. I like all the X-men films, but First Class was a step above them all, especially the first half which felt like a 60s espionage movie. Magneto's theme music is awesome too.
Preach. This is by far my favorite X-men movie. No one does flow and glamouros action like Matt Vaugh, while still doing justice to the characters. His pacing in this movie was perfect.

His action movies are incredible and he really does great superhero movies with real-world politics often playing a major plot point like Watchmen or Dawn of Justice.
This scene is terrifying, only because it shows so much as to why Eric 'became' Magneto. He doesn't even flinch when he says his parents' name was taken from them and turns his arm over to show his code. That's something he dealt with mentally a long time ago. He just needs revenge. Being a mutant is different.
Excellent scene in German and well written. In German "Tailor" literally translates to "one who cuts". Just top notch the multi-lingual puns. Outstanding writing.

Eric, being a German Jew who lost his family and everyone else in the Holocaust, has committed himself to hunting down as many of them as he can find. I can't remember exactly how, but he figures out that he'll likely find some in this bar. He remarks on the German beer in German, loud enough for the two other patrons to hear, and so they call over to him in German. They're expecting friendly conversation with a fellow German. He asks what brings them to Argentina - which is, of course, a whole ocean away from Europe and this is in the 1960s, long after the war ended. One says he's a pig farmer and the other is a tailor, laughing at the fact that they committed atrocities and got away with it. They say they came from Dusseldorf and he comments that his parents were from there. They ask for his parents' names but he tells them it was taken from them by pig farmers and tailors. The numbers on his forearm were identification tattoos, forcibly given to the Jews. By showing them his tattoo, he outs himself as a survivor of the Holocaust.

I'm from Peru, I was kinda confused when I heard "quieto cabrón", it sounded very Mexican, or is that phrase common in Argentina? I was expecting something like "pará pelotudo!" or more aggressive, Argentinians are the best when making insults in LatinAmerica.

The music and execution of this scene was perfect. Love how he used his powers to throw the knife at the shooter, then took it back to stab the guy's hand again to keep him pinned. That's how you flex.

To be honest I have always disliked the Dan Craig version, this would firmly put the character back as, suave, sophisticated, and the best goddam fictional spy ever. That's almost what we got before they cancelled X-Men Origins: Magneto and made First Class instead. I blame the shitty Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine cause other than that, it was a pretty solid film.
People love rooting against Nazis when they're German, but have more trouble with the ones on U.S. soil, with Putin, with Bolsonaro, with Le Pen, with all their followers...
Aside from the first rate acting by everyone in the scene, look how beautifully composed it is. The feel is realistic, which is what you need for a fantastical film like this. The shot where only Fassbender is in focus while the fugitive Nazis are blurred in the background is like a blurry memory that Eric has, one that comes into sharp focus when he turns to face the two. "Out of the past I come, a man you've never known, to avenge your victims as they cry out for justice."
So many impressive things to talk about in this scene, and while its small potatoes in comparison to others, that knife throw and retraction gets me every time. So badass.
I like how he throws the knife and flies back like a Mjolnir. The way he slicked back his hair after stabbing the hand and finished his beer is EPIC!! Fassbender is awesome!

I envy the universes where Fassbender got to star in a movie as good as this scene. I could sit for 3 hours watching Magneto kill Nazi's in creative ways.
Missed opportunity for a Magneto spin-off where he just goes around the world taking out as many Nazis as he can (maybe with a bit of a John Wick-influence) before he meets Charles. Oh well.
My favourite scene from this movie. I keep thinking about when people say someone is crazy they mean they are out of control of their emotions or mind or what not. But to me Magneto here by Fassbender is both crazy but in total control. His emotions and memories of WW2 fuel his actions. So damn menacing.
He lives those events every day, even if sometimes he doesn’t realize it. All it takes is seeing something… He’s back there again in the present, only now, *he can fight back, and under the exact same rules* - which is “if you have the power, *There Are No Rules.”*

It's like starting current day LeBron in a college basketball game. The obvious performance difference is similar with Daniel Craig playing Joe Bang in the movie "Logan Lucky". His interpretation and performance of his character is just next level compared to everyone else in the movie.

The reason I love this scene is that he could deal with them with hand-to-hand combat without even bothering to use his powers, yet he use it in such subtle way to show, that he is a mutant.
I love how this scene is so german. These guys are former SS Officers so the moment Erik told them about the Name they instantly knew what was coming. And they still klinged the pints with him and drank their beer before they started. Never waste good beer. Such a german moment

PlayStation Global No, his father is German and his mother is Irish, he was born in Germany but raised in N. Ireland since he was 2. Where one is born matters little in comparison to where one is raised. The place where one grows up shows in your mannerisms, your accent/language, your way of doing things. Did you know he needed a German tutor for his scenes in German?? That's because he is NOT German, he is N.Irish/British.
Your nationality depends on where you're born. He was born in Germany so he is German. You can't pick and choose your place of birth and nationality. I was born in the United Kingdom, doesn't matter if I spend the rest of my life in the U.S or any other country, I'm still British because that's where I was born.
For all the non-Argentinian people watching this. This is not Villa Gesell, this is definitely a place near La Cordillera de Los Andes, it might probably be Mendoza or any province on the west side of the country. But actually, Villa Gesell is a city placed on the eastern cost of the country. Anyways, this scene is great and Michael Fassbander is a hell of an actor

Amigo, I've re-watched Xmen films as well as this youtube clip countless times and always thought the setting somewhat familiar but never thought more of it until I saw your comment today. Checked one of my 2015 travel photos when I was there and it is 100% Bariloche, that hill in the background is unmistakably Cerro Lopez when viewed from its Northeast.

What is so mesmerizing is that the music in this scene is absolutely powerful in it's intensity and laser focus. For this scene to work with that type of music, the actor has to be talented enough and capable enough to match that music. Fassbender not only rises to that level, he makes it look easy.
You realize when he did this scene, the music wasn't ready for probably a year. You have it backwards...the music has to match the intensity of the scene, which makes Fassbender's performance even more impressive.
+supahtyp On this viewing I felt like the "frankenstein's monster" line came off a little flat. Feel like it might have been better if he said it in German.
+supahtyp I think his acting is quite good. He is supposed to be a boorish man, laughs at his own 'jokes' even when they are not jokes. I've met people like that in various countries including Germany. Notice then how his body language changes so much when Fassbender says " _Sie_ _hatten_ _keine_ _Namen_ . _Ihre_ _Namen_ _wurde_ _ihnen_ _weggenommen_ ." He becomes much more rigid, and switches his drink from his right to his left hand, because he wants to be ready to reach for the knife. The music goes very well with the sense of menace that Fassbender brings to the scene.
+Mats Wilson True, we don't know if the Nazi even speaks English, - he may only know German and Spanish. I think it was more to keep the number of subtitles to a minimum - it is an American movie after all. Also, they probably wanted to use that line in the trailer, so it would have to be in English.
As someone who lives in Argentina, I can tell you, this doesn't look like Villa Gessel, which is a city in the coast. This looks more like Bariloche, and to be fair, it's said that many nazis went there after WWII, so just mentally change the name of the city to Bariloche. Also, Argentinians don't use "cabron", that's more of a mexican word. Just a few little nitpicks.

I like the small detail of the bartender not having his finger on the trigger. He really meant to just stop the violence with the gun as an empty threat, not to shoot it. Sadly he was pointing it at Magneto lol
You don't put your finger on the trigger until you're going to shoot. Otherwise you could have an accidental discharge, like shooting your friend because you suddenly find yourself aiming at them instead of your target.
If you look closely, you actually see him move his finger off the trigger when the gun starts to move, around 2:23. So he's thinking it's his arm that is moving instead of the gun so he moves his finger hoping that will keep the gun from firing. Great attention to detail when staging the scene.
Still think this was the best of all the X Men so far. It fleshed out so much of the back story for Eric and Charles and Mystique. This was such a great opening!
My favorite Magneto scene in all the movies. So good. The build up, and suspense, the music, and the display of Erics intellect with language, and how he's remaining calm through out. Simply brilliant.
+caveman Versace whoever stabbed you missed an artery. the heart pumps blood through the body via arteries. there is higher blood pressure in arteries than in veins, which returns blood to the heart. so if a vein is cut the blood will pool out because it's less pressure pushing that blood. you cut an artery and you will see the blood spray.
“Blood and Honor. Which one would you care to shed first?” That line gives me chills! The nazi says we were under order but he had no order to try to kill Eric!

I´m from Argentina and something in this scene is completely wrong. Yes, the Nazis went to South America, especially to Argentina, but that´s not Villa Gesell. Villa Gesell is a fucking beach, and that looks like the Patagonia. Anyway, amazing scene.
I mean, they could've just said argentina, without the specific city ad's it would've been completely fine. There are tons of places like that. But nope, they just had to go the extra shitty mile and fuck up a perfectly good scene
The city name is somewhat irrelevant. Go watch the final episode of Band of Brothers. It's obvious that the director wanted the audience to make the connection that these nazis chose the one place in Argentina that looks just like the best looking parts of the Bavarian Alps to hide out in. The picturesque beauty and tranquility of the mountain view also helps set up a near perfect juxtaposition to the rage, hatred, and violence that is going to happen inside the bar. As for Villa Gesell not looking like that in real life, would nazis choose to live in the downtown area and mingle with South Americans? Or would they set up shop in the mountains with an 8 to 12 hour car ride away from the nearest resort / beach town they visit once every couple weeks to stock up? They're nazis in hiding. The place they built their little German beer hall clubhouse is off the map. Villa Gesell is an approximation.

I know that the bond producers are always looking for left field choices, when it comes time to recast. But, imagine the missed opportunities from clive Owen to Fassbender. This one sequence encapsulates every quality that you’d look for in James Bond. The ability to switch from charismatic small talk to brutality in a dime. And real screen presence.

Probably the most intense, captivating, convincing superhero movie ever made. This cold blood, determinated, unstoppable version of early magneto and the obsessing music riff sends chills down the spine. The music goes off and you know things are going very wrong, very fast, to whoever came in his crosshair. And yet, you root for him, like a sort of omnipotent Punisher, because of what happened to him, so inhumane to somewhat justify his ruthless fury. "I am going to meet my creator"... Truly epic. The scene where he tries to rip apart an entire ship swinging the anchor chain is equally memorable. They don't make movies like this anymore.

Magneto is by far one of the most complex and nuanced villains ever. He's sympathetic, has a reason for his hate, but often goes to far. You quickly go for rooting for him, to horrified, then back. You just never know which Magneto you get.
Which would explain why it was hard for me to get into X Men movies as a kid because there were always times when I didn't know whose side Magneto was on

Well there is Inglorious Bastards, unfortunately Fassbender isn't in that movie too long.
The appeal is due to many of us wishing we were capable of that level of cruelty towards evil. Without that ability, evil thrives. To counter evil we must be capable of cruelty without becoming a cruel person.

I love how the atmosphere had a complete 180 when Erik said "they didn't have a name". Going from "just sitting there, doing stuff and enjoying life" to "our life is in massive danger"

Those imprisoned in concentration camps were tattooed with a serial number and were forbidden from identifying themselves by name to guards. Instead they had to identify themselves by their serial numbers. Magneto has one such number tattooed on his arm.
In effect, their names were taken from them.
Those two men were in the picture with Shaw, the man who killed Magneto's mother in a concentration camp. They knew what it meant when Magneto said that his parents were also from Dusseldorf and did not have names.

I love that the implication of this is that they already shed their honor being "under orders".
The honor part is that he wants them to admit what they did by choice and it was wrong. They don’t shed it because they say it was just orders, trying to appear better than they are. It’s a facade of having honor, and refusing to admit they don’t have any. So they shed blood instead.

The multiple languages is impressive yes, but the way Fassbender can change emotion of his voice so quickly to fit the mood is equally impressive
Why hasn't Mathew Vaughn directed any other X-Men films? This could have been a scene out of an Oscar winning wartime period drama. The setup, the tension, the blocking, and the angles are all superbly thought out. I like all the X-men films, but First Class was a step above them all, especially the first half which felt like a 60s espionage movie. Magneto's theme music is awesome too.

Preach. This is by far my favorite X-men movie. No one does flow and glamouros action like Matt Vaugh, while still doing justice to the characters. His pacing in this movie was perfect.

His action movies are incredible and he really does great superhero movies with real-world politics often playing a major plot point like Watchmen or Dawn of Justice.

This scene is terrifying, only because it shows so much as to why Eric 'became' Magneto.
He doesn't even flinch when he says his parents' name was taken from them and turns his arm over to show his code. That's something he dealt with mentally a long time ago. He just needs revenge. Being a mutant is different.

After the war Nazi officers fled Europe and found refuge in Argentina.
Eric, being a German Jew who lost his family and everyone else in the Holocaust, has committed himself to hunting down as many of them as he can find.
I can't remember exactly how, but he figures out that he'll likely find some in this bar.
He remarks on the German beer in German, loud enough for the two other patrons to hear, and so they call over to him in German.
They're expecting friendly conversation with a fellow German. He asks what brings them to Argentina - which is, of course, a whole ocean away from Europe and this is in the 1960s, long after the war ended. One says he's a pig farmer and the other is a tailor, laughing at the fact that they committed atrocities and got away with it.
They say they came from Dusseldorf and he comments that his parents were from there. They ask for his parents' names but he tells them it was taken from them by pig farmers and tailors.
The numbers on his forearm were identification tattoos, forcibly given to the Jews. By showing them his tattoo, he outs himself as a survivor of the Holocaust.
The way he clenches his jaw slightly when he says "they didn't have a name" is a fantastic touch
i am from Argentina. in this scene, the entire cinema EXPLODED in laughs. If Villa Gesell looks like this, then Miami have glaciers and snowed mountains XD still, loved the movie
Typical Hollywood...out of touch with reality. Actually, this scene was filmed in Bariloche, which is nowhere near Villa Gesell. I laughed when I saw this scene as well. The translation needs some help, too. *Many* mistakes in this film, but it was still good.

Aside from the first rate acting by everyone in the scene, look how beautifully composed it is. The feel is realistic, which is what you need for a fantastical film like this. The shot where only Fassbender is in focus while the fugitive Nazis are blurred in the background is like a blurry memory that Eric has, one that comes into sharp focus when he turns to face the two.

My favourite scene from this movie. I keep thinking about when people say someone is crazy they mean they are out of control of their emotions or mind or what not. But to me Magneto here by Fassbender is both crazy but in total control. His emotions and memories of WW2 fuel his actions. So damn menacing.
He lives those events every day, even if sometimes he doesn’t realize it. All it takes is seeing something…

The reason I love this scene is that he could deal with them with hand-to-hand combat without even bothering to use his powers, yet he use it in such subtle way to show, that he is a mutant.
This was one of the most tense scenes in Xmen. Perfectly shot, music was really good, just damned impressive.

This is not Villa Gesell, this is definitely a place near La Cordillera de Los Andes, it might probably be Mendoza or any province on the west side of the country. But actually, Villa Gesell is a city placed on the eastern cost of the country. Anyways, this scene is great and Michael Fassbander is a hell of an actor

Amigo, I've re-watched Xmen films as well as this youtube clip countless times and always thought the setting somewhat familiar but never thought more of it until I saw your comment today. Checked one of my 2015 travel photos when I was there and it is 100% Bariloche, that hill in the background is unmistakably Cerro Lopez when viewed from its Northeast.

What is so mesmerizing is that the music in this scene is absolutely powerful in it's intensity and laser focus. For this scene to work with that type of music, the actor has to be talented enough and capable enough to match that music. Fassbender not only rises to that level, he makes it look easy.
You realize when he did this scene, the music wasn't ready for probably a year. You have it backwards...the music has to match the intensity of the scene, which makes Fassbender's performance even more impressive.

+supahtyp I think his acting is quite good. He is supposed to be a boorish man, laughs at his own 'jokes' even when they are not jokes. I've met people like that in various countries including Germany. Notice then how his body language changes so much when Fassbender says " _Sie_ _hatten_ _keine_ _Namen_ . _Ihre_ _Namen_ _wurde_ _ihnen_ _weggenommen_ ." He becomes much more rigid, and switches his drink from his right to his left hand, because he wants to be ready to reach for the knife. The music goes very well with the sense of menace that Fassbender brings to the scene.

I think it was more to keep the number of subtitles to a minimum - it is an American movie after all. Also, they probably wanted to use that line in the trailer, so it would have to be in English.
As someone who lives in Argentina, I can tell you, this doesn't look like Villa Gessel, which is a city in the coast. This looks more like Bariloche, and to be fair, it's said that many nazis went there after WWII, so just mentally change the name of the city to Bariloche.
Also, Argentinians don't use "cabron", that's more of a mexican word.

This is a truly great scene, I've watched it many times. Fassbender is a world class actor and really elevates this film.
I like the small detail of the bartender not having his finger on the trigger. He really meant to just stop the violence with the gun as an empty threat, not to shoot it. Sadly he was pointing it at Magneto lol
Also the pig farmer passing the beer glass to his left hand so he could grab the knife.
You don't put your finger on the trigger until you're going to shoot. Otherwise you could have an accidental discharge, like shooting your friend because you suddenly find yourself aiming at them instead of your target.
If you look closely, you actually see him move his finger off the trigger when the gun starts to move, around 2:23. So he's thinking it's his arm that is moving instead of the gun so he moves his finger hoping that will keep the gun from firing. Great attention to detail when staging the scene.

Michael Fassbender is one of those rare actors that can make a scene absolutely enthralling with his presence, the supporting actors where good too.
My favorite Magneto scene in all the movies. So good. The build up, and suspense, the music, and the display of Erics intellect with language, and how he's remaining calm through out. Simply brilliant.
It’s one of my favorite scenes. Emotionally and morally satisfying. The tension gets dialed up and then the shadow falls. Good music.

I´m from Argentina and something in this scene is completely wrong. Yes, the Nazis went to South America, especially to Argentina, but that´s not Villa Gesell. Villa Gesell is a fucking beach, and that looks like the Patagonia.

The city name is somewhat irrelevant. Go watch the final episode of Band of Brothers. It's obvious that the director wanted the audience to make the connection that these nazis chose the one place in Argentina that looks just like the best looking parts of the Bavarian Alps to hide out in. The picturesque beauty and tranquility of the mountain view also helps set up a near perfect juxtaposition to the rage, hatred, and violence that is going to happen inside the bar.
As for Villa Gesell not looking like that in real life, would nazis choose to live in the downtown area and mingle with South Americans? Or would they set up shop in the mountains with an 8 to 12 hour car ride away from the nearest resort / beach town they visit once every couple weeks to stock up? They're nazis in hiding. The place they built their little German beer hall clubhouse is off the map. Villa Gesell is an approximation.

I know that the bond producers are always looking for left field choices, when it comes time to recast. But, imagine the missed opportunities from clive Owen to Fassbender. This one sequence encapsulates every quality that you’d look for in James Bond. The ability to switch from charismatic small talk to brutality in a dime. And real screen presence.

Days of future past is the best film in the series
Probably the most intense, captivating, convincing superhero movie ever made.
This cold blood, determinated, unstoppable version of early magneto and the obsessing music riff sends chills down the spine.
The music goes off and you know things are going very wrong, very fast, to whoever came in his crosshair.
And yet, you root for him, like a sort of omnipotent Punisher, because of what happened to him, so inhumane to somewhat justify his ruthless fury.
"I am going to meet my creator"... Truly epic.
The scene where he tries to rip apart an entire ship swinging the anchor chain is equally memorable.
They don't make movies like this anymore.
