In the end, Maroni was the only one smart enough not to get involved with him and even ratted him out, but he still got killed indirectly by the Joker through Harvey Dent(Joker's ace in the hole).
Yeah, I think the Slav is the only one that immediately took him seriously. Notice he’s the only one they show not laughing when the Joker says he wants half?
Notice how when Joker gets called a freak and crazy he stutters and loses his rhythm. He firmly believes he isn't a freak even though everyone else sees him as one. The little details that add to his character are amazing!
Joker believes that morals and rules are mere excuses for people's hypocrisy when they eventually go against it for any reason. That ultimately it is a dog eat dog world. He goes to prove it when he threatens to blow up a hospital if the guy threatening to expose Batman's identity isn't killed, and when he offers one of the 2 boats to be spared if one blows up the others. Batman saw that Joker wants to prove that deep down everyone is a 'freak' and a monster like him.
The way he locks onto Gambols eyes and the way he repeats it was always my favourite part of the whole movie. It's subtle, but I know that exact look - when he says "im not" he intends for it to be taken with more weight, so when they all continue to laugh it become personal for him. The glare demands Gambol lock eyes with him for him to repeat the statement again, clear as day, no bullshit or confusion. The way he delivers those lines makes me think that - to heath's joker - the assertion that he's crazy is something from his past that contributed to him being who he is now. It obviously means a lot to the character, not only that he is not called crazy, but that no one walks away with any sort of misconception that he is. Its more important to him than money, catching batman, the guy he just killed... id go as far as to say that being acknowledged as "not crazy" is more important to Joker than anything else in that room at the moment - one has to wonder what would have happened if Gambol had not done Joker the respect of meeting his gaze as he repeated himself. 🤔
see when people ask why Ledger was best...!! is how he nailed those little details...!! people say stop sucking his dick and move on...!! naahh fuck no you dont move on... this is a fucking standard
The way Ledger emphasized the "T" in the "I'm noT" response to being called crazy, along with the eye twitches and half blinks is what made him a legendary actor in this iconic role
I just realized that there were metal detectors and guards at 0:13 yet Joker completely walked into the room unopposed without them going off despite carrying a jacket full of hand grenades🃏
Exactly, Even when he says we kill the batman and he wants half everyone laughs at him except the Russian. You can always make more money but without dealing with the actual problem then it'll cost you everything, Even your freedom. The Russian knows this.

@@alexbrasinha yes alexandre. but i think there is not the joker. but someone that has his skillset. (in some off the books millitary something) . even if he is not real, the concept of him scares me😂
It's crazy how, in the context of the story, Joker never meant "kill the Batman" as in actually ending the man's life. He meant kill his image and his reputation. And Joker actually succeeds at doing just that.
This is why Heaths Joker will always be superior to any other depictions of the Joker including Joaquin Phoenix‘s. Heath’s Joker is always several steps ahead of Batman and the police and has multiple contingencies to ensure his plane work. He is a criminal genius and not just a mentally ill person driven to crime by victimisation. He is truly the crown prince of crime.
@@mdgcwood you have to admit tho that joaquin almost perfectly depicted a lonely man with social anxiety and disorders and they were realistic with his boundaries
@@bailey4273 yes he definitely did! I like that movie, the aesthetics of the old Gotham city and his intense acting were incredible!!! I just didn’t think the character was in keeping with the Joker.. The Joker in my mind is a genius. A demented, homicidal, extremely dangerous Genius who is capable of detailed and elaborate strategies and plans. Phoenix’s depiction of the Joker was demented and frightening but he didn’t seem smart enough to achieve complex plans that would outwit Batman and the police. He was was a victim of mental illness and an uncaring society with inadequate health care, which made him a sociopath and that didn’t mesh with the idea that the Joker should be an insane unstoppable force of chaos… I loved how articulate Heath’s Joker was “I’m not a monster, I’m just ahead of the curve” frightening.
I love how the Russian guy is always regarding The Joker seriously. Like most of the men in the room laugh The Joker off or view him with disbelief but the Russian guy doesnt show anything other than genuine interest in what the Joker wants and is capable of. It makes sense when you consider what The Joker has done here too, he's stolen from them successfully, walks into their secret meeting without incident, and offers to solve their problem. He's already shown them what kind of power he has, but only rhe Russian guy sees it.
Yeah the Russian guy knows the Joker not only has massive balls but gets results, unfortunately he did not realize the Joker himself does not overly care about money thus there if no real want to control him as the one thing he wants Chaos is not something they can leverage to control him
@@starfishandroid Okay but literally everything else I said was true from his POV the Joker is a mercenary/opportunist the thought of him being an agent of chaos that cannot be bribed/reasoned with never occurred to him

@@ecndwildlife6327 To be fair he clearly was the least willing to work with the joker and it was self defense he thought the joker really was dicking around about to perform a magic trick
@Edwin Well it's not really true, he got paid for what he's good at. What he did with his money is up to him, some people burn their money with drugs, some people burn their money with debt, he burned his money with gas.
@Edwin The joker demands half of their money to ''kill the batman'' not because he wants money, but because by taking their money and destroying it, he weakens them, making it easier to take over. Joker used it as a means to an end, because his ultimate goal (he tells this to batman) is to literally play this ''game'' with batman for forever, or until Batman finally breaks his only rule. His sole purpose is to push Batman right up to the edge, and test him at every turn. He gets the mob on his side by saying he will kill Batman, but never has the intention to.
@@GMthunderbreak Yeah it's not true. He just killed a guy 2 mins ago with his _"Magic Trick"._ Also he says *"We kill The Batman."* But when he met Batman he says: "I don't want to kill you. What would I do without you?" ruclips.net/video/jane6C4rIwc/видео.htmlm5s
It ties in beautifully to his entire point in the movie, that anyone can be turned, can be deemed “crazy” - they just need a little push. And I haven’t seen this ever being mentioned, but I think the Joker doesn’t want to be alone(Batman even tells him he is at the end). He doesn’t like the idea of people potentially being more like Batman than people being more like him, so he goes to great lengths to prove that they are more like him, and when he’s proven to be wrong at the end just look at the sadness and disappointment in his face
C H I L L exactly. i wonder what happened in his past to trigger his defensive reaction. he’s clearly been called crazy before and it deeply affects him psychologically

The CASUAL dismissal of a threat upon his life This guy literally just couldn't care less. A psychopath with no moral constrictions or sympathetic forethought; just a dog chasing a car And Gambol actually thought he could threaten this dog... lul
By doing that Heath did a fantastic job of giving the audience an extra dimension, and view into the Jokers backstory and inner psychology of the character. I'm sure I won't see a better portrayal of the Joker in my lifetime.
@@MrDemoncrusher You did. Phoenix was better than Heath but in a far more subtle way. Saying that, I couldn't see Arthur Fleck becoming this guy, more a child-like and extremely creepy dude, more like a Son of Sam than a political terrorist. I get you though, this incarnation of 'psycho rookie' Joker is disturbing as hell. This was a full-blown horror movie. Phoenix was the scariest Joker by far though, simply because it's as real as it gets.
His ticks. His intonations. His pauses and side glances. Truly a mesmerizing and amazing performance and totally worthy of that Oscar he won posthumously.
"You're crazy." "I'm not." He responds so quickly and humourlessly there. I'm actually glad that his sensitivity to being called crazy or a freak was never important to the plot. It's just a cool detail for a cool character.
Always loved that exchange. Gives a human temper to the imperviousness he otherwise exudes here. As bad as it'd be to have someone this fearless and capable as an enemy, having him personally affronted by you is yet worse. 😆 Even though Gambol is technically killed out of frame, the viewer can infer Joker might've gashed him apart with a bit more venom than his usual "didn't even look at 'em" dispatchings.
@@BIL0471 - killed out of frame? That makes sense then because what I saw is joker having a knife to Gambol's mouth and then his back where he was limp and lifeless and slouched to the ground. Thought they cut out a scene or something
Yeah, that's exactly how they shot it. Knife in mouth, cut (bwahaha!) to terrified underling, "Why so serious?" Then musical sting while underling recoils in horror at the unseen butchery, then Gambol slumping to the floor. TDK is pretty elusive with its hardest violence, I didn't even remember Joker stabbing those two guys to lever himself up off the pool table right before, until rewatching the clip.
2:40 i love that he loses his train of thought after the freak comment. it's like in that exact moment he decided "ok, i'm killing this guy" and took a few seconds to think of his whole plan to kill him, and then he comes back to and tries to remember what he was saying "...a guy like me..."
Joker's reaction after the guy says "You're crazy" is exactly why Ledger won that Oscar. The calm rage, the eye twitch, the subtlety in how much he hates being called crazy. So good.
I thought he loves being seen as a madman? He calls himself a freak/outcast when telling Batman “they’ll cast you out like a leper. You’re just like Me!”
I love how he literally assaults one of the guards by shoving a pencil in his eye/head, and the russian dude literally looks like ”that’s a pretty cool trick actually!”
And we didnt even get to see his trick. He was all set up for a little magic to lighten the mood and then tragedy strikes. That's why you dont horseplay in the office. Somebody could get an eye put out. He had even promised to show how it was done.
I was the only person in a packed theater that laughed at that part and it was a loud laugh and I looked around me and I was like "really, nothing?" Lol. I remember that pretty well.
"how about a magic trick?....we're gonna make capitalism, disappear....." *spontaneously starts rebuilding the soviet union* "TADA! it's, it's....gone." "if it's so simple, why haven't you done it?" "we don't say _you,_ we say _we."_ "how much you want?" "uh... as much as the government dictates.." *laughter* "you're crazy!" "I am....yes, I am....."
Always thought that. Seeing it that night in the theatre, the way he moved in those seconds combined with the distance vs the way the makeup made him look at that distance. Creepy as all heck.
@Brayan Carmona Are you serious? He kills people because he wants to mess with the natural order of things. This version of the Joker is an anarchistic madman, his goal is to destroy the foundations of society so that people can all be who they really are. Remove the rules and laws. Every man for himself, and dog eat dog. He’s not fighting for a greater good. He’s fighting to create a world without structure or governing bodies. A world as crazy and unpredictable as himself.
The little clicking sound he makes between "a guy like me....look listen" and "I know why you choose to have...." is an epic rarely paid attention to addition to the character. All the little sounds and ticks that were added into the proformance, brought the character to life. Ledger truely was the Joker
“And btw… the suit it wasnt cheap. You outta know you bought it.” Something about that line just makes me go wow everytime. This performance will never be matched.
Which is why he is Batman archenemy. There is nothing joker won't do and his psychotic unpredictability is what makes it so hard for batman to stop him. Usually batman can figure out what a villain is after, their goals and wants and then use that information to stop them but with the joker he just enjoys chaos. It's impossible to figure out what he is after in life.
I think it’s because he’s extremely realistic. The joker could literally put anyone on their ass if he wanted to, with how much of a genius he actually is. A lot of the shit we saw in this movie proved that he is ungodly intelligent, and if he didn’t want to go after his beliefs he could be the most successful criminal on earth.
"you see.. a guy.. like me" "a freak!" aa... ee.... thats.. an expression of him supressing his anger, while trying to get back to what he was saying after being interrupted by an insult. its actually quite a masterpiece in my opinion.
@@vietle8156 because Joker truly believes that he's the actually sane person in, well, all of the World. He looks to these mafia men as outcasts that could've been better at what they do, and to receive such words from them, it's offensive to Joker.
The way he kicks the door open at the end is so cool. The Joker was amazing in this. He was somehow funny, smart, crazy, and scary all at the same time.
Yeah I was thinking that. He switches effortlessly between being intimidating, intelligent, and comical. Shuffling off backwards and kicking the door to me seemed kinda funny after the seriousness of threatening a room of Mafia lords.
That line was Improvised. Heath was supposed to say "I'll steal more", but Heath didn't like it and changed it to...."Yeah". During Filming, they didn't realize he had changed it until the entire scene was shot. When Nolan Watched it Back, he Loved it, and Kept it.
The script in this movie is impeccable. It's written like a slick crime film and not a superhero flick. Small touches like Joker calling Lau "the television" are just brilliant.

@@lihclore What are you talking about “alternative”? I was just defining what the quote means. Why are you even interested in mine own political ideology? You know you’re walking in a minefield there.
Notice how the Joker suddenly gets serious when he's called 'a freak' or 'crazy'. He doesn't reply with a witty one liner or a chilling sentence, instead he seems... insecure. That is an amazing detail added by Nolan to the character: he doesn't like being called those things because that is all he was called throughout his life, and he's spent his whole life trying to prove them wrong.
cause he’s insecure in his misanthropy, he wants people to take it seriously and he wants to convince himself and others that there’s no hope anymore. All that gets thrown out the window if he’s just some loon, which he kind of is.
That's not on Nolan. That is all Ledger. If you take the time to read the screenplay for the movie, it never states that Ledger should respond differently to that type of comment. It only states that he says "No...I'm not. I'm not..." That is acting, and that acting is the reason Ledger was awarded an Oscar for his performance. The second ever given to an actor.
Got damn the Joker is just a masterfully written character. He never wanted to physically kill Batman, just the idea of him. And he knew the mob would misunderstand his request.
I always thought that at first he wanted to kill him just for the challenge of it and he prolly thought of him as a nuisance, then he changed his mind cus they caused so much chaos in their conflicts.
Killing that idea would've destroyed the city faster than anything else, the joker was like the devil and he knew how to cause real damage and the Batman eventually understood that the joker is sicker than 'someone who just wants to watch the world burn'.
@redbandit11 definitely joker. He would just fucking bomb John wick or run him over with a fucking tank while firing an RPG and even if he fails he would be wearing a suicide bomb vest just so that if he goes down, the enemy goes down with him
"Oh, and, by the way, the suit? It wasn't cheap. You oughta know, you bought it," is one of the most brilliantly delivered lines in a film full of brilliant lines
Agreed. Both are fantastic in their own ways. Joaquin is the Joker before and when he became the Joker, whereas Ledger is the Joker at his peak, the one we’re all familiar with.
Two great actors with different interpretations, imo none is really 'better'. Ledger's Joker was the cold blooded bad a^s sociopathic Joker. Phoenix's was the more human, relatable Joker. Arthur Fleck was not necessarily born a sociopath, he's more of a feeling person who was an outcast from society. Ledger's Joker rejects society and their norms in a more militaristic fashion, with a purpose. Phoenix's Joker is just lashing out at those who hurt him
I love The Russian mobster’s expression after the joker drilled a pencil through the dude’s head... He looks genuinely impressed, somewhat frightened, and seems to be the only one taking him seriously.
That pencil trick gave him not only instant street cred, but Status...that's the kind of story becomes urban legend ("...and the pencil did disappear! Along with the guy! Dis-speared it in his eye!")
I dont really see how the pencil trick worked tbh. a no.2 pencil, with eraser up? Some... welp[!] Most bullets (via handguns) have a hard time piercing bone.
How, it’s still corny? He did a great job acting but the others bring it down. The acting and writing in this scene is atrocious. Quit giving it a pass based on Christopher Nolan and the late Ledger. I prefer the comic book style of Batman and Batman Returns.

Pure cojones. The Joker walks uninvited into a meeting of murdering crime bosses who want him dead for stealing their money. He laughs at their plan, kills one of their henchmen and tells them: 1) they have no balls, 2) their mafia banker is a squealer, 3) he wants half their money. Then he taunts the guy who wants him dead the most, leaves his calling card, and walks out. Pure cojones, and one of my favorite scenes of all time.
@@melvinleechenglee Good point, Joker just strolls into their meeting, nonchalantly showing them that he manages to crash their "ahem" group therapy session with ease.
I remember seeing this in theaters. After the Joker kicked the door open and left, people in the theater were murmuring and some were chucking in a anxious way. Ledger’s performance was so raw and unnerving the audience didn’t know whether to laugh or take it serious or what. What a phenomenal piece of acting.
One of the reasons I liked Ledger's performance so much is how "funny" he was with his dark humor. He told them he paid for it with their money. He answered a rhetorical question. And he made a pun when he revealed the grenades. He was a fantastic Joker.
@@danielthemaniel7934 Joaquin's Joker is a very different take and went a completely different direction, So it really comes down to personal preference, I like ledger's better since he feels more intelligent, chaotic and mysterious and left you always fascinated and wondering what's going on inside his head or what actually happened to him in his past that made him that way, while Joaquin's story was more focused on trying to make you empathize with him.....still I do agree that no one can top either
@@nuttkicker245 Fair enough. Joaquin's did play into crazy just for the sake of crazy in some scenes. They definitely took very different directions but the acting in both cases were outstanding

E) All of these :)
However Nolan shit the bed with Two Face. In this movie all we got is a scorned man who wants to get even instead of the twisted guy who's 2 sides are constantly at war with each other. Hell, we didn't even get duplicity from this one. Not a "we" or "I" at any time.
@@Rockhound6165 While Nolan’s two face may not have been true to the comic books, it did show a man struggling over the death of somebody he cared for, and he thought Batman and Gordon were responsible. Even at the end, as Batman flips two faces scarred face over to its pristine side, he says ‘Gotham needs its true hero’. It shows how Two face was still Harvey Dent at one point in time, and Aaron Eckhart’s performance made this even more believable, like it was possible to have a Two-Face in the real world. I do see your point, however.

Joker is the rare villian that is actually, legitimately scary. You just never know what he's gonna do next.
I'm not..."
That is acting, and that acting is the reason Ledger was awarded an Oscar for his performance. The second ever given to an actor.
It didn't seem like insecurity; it seemed like "Oh, great, now he's going to do something dangerous."

He wanted to “kill the batman”, not the man who was the batman
That’s why he killed the imposter! God this movie has so many layers
Killing that idea would've destroyed the city faster than anything else, the joker was like the devil and he knew how to cause real damage and the Batman eventually understood that the joker is sicker than 'someone who just wants to watch the world burn'.

His iteration of the Joker was just charming as hell. There's no way you can't like it.

I like Joaquin's Joker. No problem at all with it. But, this is the ultimate Joker.
Phoenix's Joker is just lashing out at those who hurt him
I disagree.
Both phoenix and ledger are amazing, but the ultimate joker is nicholson. He is still not bested.
Skip 63 totally agree
I love The Russian mobster’s expression after the joker drilled a pencil through the dude’s head...
He looks genuinely impressed, somewhat frightened, and seems to be the only one taking him seriously.
Yeah, he's one of those people that looks at a tiger and respects it while also saying, "I want that on a leash."
Not much for magic act, but that was pretty good trick.
WHERE. IS THE ITALIAN?
That pencil trick gave him not only instant street cred, but Status...that's the kind of story becomes urban legend ("...and the pencil did disappear! Along with the guy! Dis-speared it in his eye!")
I dont really see how the pencil trick worked tbh. a no.2 pencil, with eraser up? Some... welp[!] Most bullets (via handguns) have a hard time piercing bone.

Hell yes. He went full on John Gotti but more importantly, he had a plan (albeit a sporadic plan but a plan well enough that proved effective.
I mean, it's a film, so the story can do anything they want.
P.S. Don't tell anybody, but the Joker didn't really exist.
I loved every second of it
Ehh, ok...
One of the reasons I liked Ledger's performance so much is how "funny" he was with his dark humor. He told them he paid for it with their money. He answered a rhetorical question. And he made a pun when he revealed the grenades. He was a fantastic Joker.
That’s the perfect reaction, inspiring intrigue. The moment you realize this Joker is just a little different from the others.

I love how amicable the Dark Knight Trilogy fans are, because we can all agree on at least one of the following:
A) Heath Ledger gave the best Joker performance
B) The casting choices for each and every character were perfect
C) Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors of all time
D) Hans Zimmer has produced one of the best scores in history for these movies.
Ledger is so good that this isn't a Bat movie it's a Joker movie and the Joker won, in Rises the Joker's victory is complete.
