*Symphony X's Russell Allen + Fear Factory's Burton C Bell + Megadeth's Dave Mustaine **
By the time 2005 rolled around, we were celebrating our 20th anniversary and i was writing a setlist that went through the band's history chronologically ecah night. so that tour did not have any "on-off covers"...with the exception of this one. We began the 2005 touring cycle by jumping on board the very first version of Megadeth's Gigantour. Back in early 2004, I had decided we should cover this soing as a one-off the next time we rolled through the Dallas area, but we ended up never playing in Texas on the ToT tour (this was before Dimebag was tragically killed...).The next time we played in Texas was on Gigantour and the Dimebag tragedy had happened months earlier...so we finally got to cover it and it's impact was now magnified tenfold because of the situation.
I decided to elevate the song from merely a "cover" to more of a "tribute", and Invited Symphony X's Russell Allen, Fear Factory's Burton C Bell and Megadeth's Dave Mustaine to join us on stage for the song. It was a very special moment for everybody in attendance that nigh (from both sides of the stage). The next day, I received an email from Vinnie Paul who was at the show to tell me how moved he was by the tribute and that it meant the world to him (as his email did to me...).
To all those people hating on this video: "It was a very special moment for everybody in attendance that night (from both sides of the stage). The next day, I received an email from Vinnie Paul who was at the show to tell me how moved he was by the tribute and that it meant the world to him (as his email did to me(portnoy}...). So, if Vinnie Paul loved the tribute, why do people hate it?
You must excuse them because those fuckers don’t know any better.
Let me just state the obvious. Mustain's solo wasn't very good. And I say that in the nicest way possible. Fact is not hate, brother. Cheers 🥂
FUCK YEAH IT WAS! I'M IN THE THUMBNAIL!
@@andreas_XX Let me put this there, I was there. I am in the crowd in the thumbnail. Honestly I didn't care for Megadeath, came for DT. But this was in Dallas, and very special moment. Yall don't get how much Dimebag is revered in the area. I actually bought tickets for dream theater specifically, stayed for 1-2 megadeth songs, and went home, because i had school then lol.
Who the fuck is hating on this masterpiece?
Mustaine learned the first lick of the solo and was like "ok, enough practice" 😂😂
I’ve only been playing for 4 years, it took me one hour to learn that solo and one day to perfect it, Dave got no excuse here lmao
🤷♂️
this was two years post nerve damage
Fixing the Solo: ruclips.net/video/SB0pzCaxasM/видео.html
Mustaine
I love how the first half of the solo is beautifully and cleanly articulated by Petrucci and then Mustaine comes in 💀💀💀
Don’t trash Dave. What’s wrong with you.
I love Petrucci, but he butchered this song.
@@TruthNotRelativebro what😭. I love Dave and all but how did Petrucci butcher this song💀
@@nickparsons121 Petrucci has never wrote a song that anybody remembers and I mean nobody remembers
@@rustinpeace9303I hope you are joking😂 Are you gonna deny the existence of DT songs then? Also how about terminal velocity? Maybe if people like you started listening rock and metal just 2 days ago they wouldn’t know DT or Petrucci
@@dharshdanube6911Be nice. Any metal that isn't 4/4 or for stoners is probably outside of his frequency range.
Mustaine literally sounded like a teenager trying to play that solo for the first time in his bedroom.
maybe he was very drunk hahahahha
Didn't have the balls to let pettucci take it
Lmfao 🤣😂🤣😂 very true! But then again we all would. ☮️
“literally”? As opposed to figuratively?
Lol you f a g s dont know what the fuck was going for that gig
Dave was a drive by guitarist. Hit every note but the ones he was aiming at.
Mustaine's solo - The type of solos that we used to do when we were first learning them during our teenage years and thinking we actually nailed it.
what i absolutely love about john petrucci is that when he covers any song, say this or floyds comfortably numb, he always sticks to how the solos were actually played rather than overdoing it
dave's solo sounds like kurt cobain was trying to play Pantera
Cobain would've played it better with less notes 😂
Word
Dave came out and played a solo from Kill em all album. That's the Dave we like.
Should name their album kill all ears
Hey, I have a pretty cool story about this cover performance. I was one of 3 guitar techs for Fear Factory back on the Gigantour in Aug 2005. When the Dream Theater guys got together with Russell Allen, and Mustaine to run through the song, I immediately saw that Dave was majorly hung over, and as bonus couldn't remember any part of Dime's classic solo Cemetery Gates. This is where I stepped up like a pro with a very special trick a very special song. I go " Dave, chill u got this. All u have to do is pinch your pick super hard, then lay down the fastest tremolo picking you right hand has ever experienced." Dave responds " Ok, but what about, uh, the .... the notes and stuff?" I put my arm over his shoulder and pulled Dave aside, leaning in to him I said " Dave, this is Texas - everyone is gonna be f'ing wasted, its the show closer". How many notes of ur part do u know? " "Umm. I think 3 or 4" Dave slurred. He actually was ahead of crowd and already drunk 4 hours before the doors opened. "Perfect, just tremolo pick like your wrist is a god*man bandsaw on meth. Its gonna sound fuc*in' amazing, trust me!" Mustaine stated blankly at me for a long stretch. "What's a bandsaw man?" Don't worry about that! Just do what I told ya. You've got this you big flaming hair farmer!" What did you say?" Mustaine yelled out. I was already almost off the stage. " You've got this Dave! Like a frigin' horny machine gun dude!" Dave was still vacantly leering at me with no discernible expression as I hauled ass off the stage right. And there you have it, now hit that replay button again and enjoy the sweet sweet musical fruits of my Jedi-axe meld with Mr Megadeth.
I don't really believe this but I do think your writing is top quality lol
Nice story fake ass hell tho lmao
@@jedinxf7why dont you believe it?
Now that fvcking metal bro!🤘🤘
Way to take full credit for someone else's work🤣
That’s the thing I adore about dime. He never messed up a solo live. EVER. He was a phenomenal guitarist
Never knew Mustaine could play like lil Wayne.
Stevie fan?
Nic nee
😂
He needs fuckin' autotune. Leaning on his bridge like that.
He sucked, quite a bit. At least he played more notes than lil wayne
Russell Allen singing Pantera... Amazing!
Mustaine's solo sounds like when you unplug the guitar from the amp without turning down the volume
Glad they got Burton in to share vocal duties...he's got the power and grit the song needs. Love how he almost broke James' wrist with that high five.
man russell totally nailed this
And... James hit the high notes at the end, that even Phil couldn't do live...
🌎✌🌱🎶
Yeah, that was fucking awesome
Listen, I know I’m extremely late to the party but to see John Petrucci and Dave Mustain doing a cover of dime bags work is so beyond epic. I can’t even properly describe it!!
How in the hell did I not know that this existed?
Dave comes out randomly during the solo and I was like WTF?!?!?! IS THAT DAVE?!?!
These guys had toured with Pantera in the past. These guys are all outfitted with the right equipment and the right knowledge.
As Eric Morecambe once said, 'I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order'.
It takes seeing a master guitarist play this song to make you realize how great Dime really was. Damn
I love how Petrucci plays that. He plays original parts without adding random improvisations.
I hate how Mustain plays it. Like guy, who too lazy to learn original solo.
James has such a great vocal range!
Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy all nailed it. Honestly, they should have left it as a crowd sing along.
I think Rudess nailed it too, considering he played the part of the second/backing guitar with a keyboard. The Wizard has never disappointed me.
I think it’s very different than the original masterpiece but they made it their own and did something good with it. Bo replacing the original lineup though
James a awesome singer imo but it was not the best fitting song
LaBrie did greatly his job 6:20, he should have sung the whole song. Burton C. Bell and Russell Allen don't fit in this song. And Petrucci obviously would have nailed the solo, Mustaine butchered it
The energy with Portnoy is so different than now. I think it's undeniable the chemistry with him in the band is night and day.. no dig on Mangini but Portnoy 'belongs' with this band
Very nice tribute, also Mustaine have guts to play that solo after the injury in the arm. Thanks for share
Say what you will about this being Phil's song but Phil NEVER attempted to do the high screams at the end live and Labrie just did it
watch Pantera's 1990 live, Phil does it perfectly as on the record
I was at that show with my younger brother, missed the first few minutes of DT's set because I was meeting Dave Mustaine and the rest of the band. Damn but that was a great concert, two of my all time favorite bands on the same stage. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
RIP, Dime.
Director: Who do we have for the last part of the song ?
Guy: we have Kirk but he didn't bring his wah pedal !
Director: Jesus no
Guy: We have Kerry King but his contact with the devil is almost up !
Director: Nahh that doesn't sound good
Mustaine enters the room ..
Director: Hey Dave , Can you play the last part of the solo to ..
Mustaine: Are you seriously fucking asking me that BOB?
Director: oh no no ! Great then ! Dave it's coming up in few mins ...Are you ready?
Mustaine: I am always ready ..
Mustaine enters the stage ...
Mustaine: WTF? Which song is this ..I thought you were talking about Hangar?!
Director in the ear piece: WHAT?! You're on ! Just play any solo ...Improvise !
Mustaine : ALRIGHT ! LETS SHRED THIS !
Kirk, for all his faults, would have played this better than Dave did. You really can't do much worse than Dave did here to an iconic solo.
@@blppt I don't know who can play worse than Kirk
@@MrFrich Dave, for one. He's not a very good lead guitarist. Kirk isn't especially great either, but he's generally more accurate than Dave at playing leads.
Dave>Kirk when it comes to rhythm guitar, tho.
@@blppt I don't agree. In this video, Dave plays almost immediately after his radial nerve disease, which is why he performed so crookedly. Before Dave's illness, everything worked out more than accurately.
@@MrFrich I don't see how this can be blamed on an injury/illness---he didn't learn the solo.
why hate on something that means so much to the people involved?
even if the cover isn't good, it's the fact that the band cares and wants to show that they care!
James L BRIE scream was so amazing that makes me cry and Petrucci is Impeccable and portnoy was very exited.
When I saw this video, I was crazy with practicing guitar for hours and hours, I was around 18 years old. Seeing Mustaine do the solo without hitting a "correct" note but transmitting everything he transmits, started to change my mind.
He is not only metal, he is also rock and he is also punk.
I was there, regardless of Daves solo, the energy was incredible, actually a bit tough to put in into words...
Russell Allen destruindo nos vocais é gratificante 🤘
All I know is.... @ 5:10 John Petrucci is shredding , and all of a sudden this
freakin 757 Jet airplane comes screaming onto the stage , and its Dave Mustaine
in true Megadeth form , paying tribute to his friend Darrell . Man that is one clip
I will treasure !
In case there was ever any doubt; the greatest guitar players in the world cannot be copied. And this video proves it.
I was there Stage Right with my friends excited to see Petrucci play one of my favorite Dimebag solos. Then Dave stands directly in front of us and plays this monstrosity. It’s hard to tell from the video, but his tone had so much piercing high end that it physically and emotionally hurt. How do you do that to Dimebag?!
You can notice that performing this song was quite a challenge for the guys, and they nailed it 'till the last breath and note! What a perfomance! Chapeau bas !!!
WOW nailed it.. i came into this thinking well its Dream Theater they are so technical it will be pretty good. Blew my mind hell of a cover. Awesome tribute. RIP Dime and Vinny
God phil was so gifted.his voice cant be matched from cfh album
I saw them in San Diego during this tour it was fun watching all the fear factory and megadeth fans trying to keep up with dream theater's time signature changes with their headbanging
Great tribute. I miss Dime and Vinny. Teared up a bit - thanks for the great cover and nostalgia.
Believe it or not I was at that show at the front near Petrucci.
Dream Theater is a band that covers any song and it's all beautiful. ❤❤❤
I am Proud to have this group cover the Best song to come out of the 90's, this song will forever ROCK the Fuck ON for eternity, RIP. My Brother Dime Bag
This was the closest to my "wet dream' of having Russel Allen being lead vocals for Dream Theater. And as for him, it did not disappoint.
Everyone complaining for Dave's solo, should remember that Pantera existed because Dave created Thrash in the first place. And I am pretty sure Dime would be stocked Dave covering his song....
petrucci is like " Dave, What ARE you Doing ??......
I had no idea that Russell Allen and James LaBrie shared the stage at any time. I like them both but Russ is a monster. Are there any other videos showing them together (or SX with DT)?
How the Fook have I never seen this until now??? Fan-fooking-tastic 👏👏👏👏
A special song of a special band can' t be played by anyonelse in the same way and with the same feeling and groove. Long Live PANTERA CFH
First off I can't believe they got his frickin name wrong!! Who is Darrell Williams 🤔 Second, Ola Englund should play anything PanterA/Dime related(if you don't agree watch his Floods solo cover, or any Pantera cover he does. Amazing!)
They also got the dates wrong. Someone needs their ass kicked for that one. 👊
Thank you, scrolled half way through the comments to see who actually paid attention to the blasphemy of calling him Darrell Williams instead of Darrell Abbott.
From Texas
Thaks Sir Allen, you saved the day, as usual.
OMG I was there for that show! I couldn't believe they played this!
I wonder how classy and clearly Jordan Rudess have made his part of this metal act. He is real wizard.
And of course other guys did their parts as good as they could, not like an original Pantera members, but passion and spirit onstage were really high. Thank them all for the memories.
Always I come back to hear this version the part when Russell sing destroy my brain lol
The fact that John Petrucci was NAILING all of this and then Mustaine was impossiby there as well!!!
Gotta wonder what JP was thinking as Mustaine was hacking up that solo. 🤣
Killer job. John really nailed the solo with his own flavor
RIP Abbott Brothers, we'll miss you!
I was at this show. About 20 min right before this I shook Mr. Mustaine's hand. Megadeth sounded better in person than on their albums. This was Gigantour at Nokia Theater. Symphony X shared the stage as well.
RIP 🪦 Dime and Vinnie. We all miss you both.
Getcha pull brother RIP THE ABOTT BROTHERS
Que buen homenaje. No lo habia visto. Te extrañaremos siempre Dimebag!!
Wow! Why am I now hearing this for the first time?!
Liked because of Russell Allen ❤ There should be a love button!
Omfg just found this 18 years later! What a track and what a great guest list ❤❤❤❤
My favorite band doing one of my favorite songsss, its sounds sooo good
I can't believe some of these commenters criticize this cover. These people don't know music. It's such a damn shame this man is good and they do a damn good cover y'all need to knock it off with them shity comments.
I love how all these people want to talk smack and act like this was everything short of phenomenal. Haters want to act like the singing wasn't great or the solos weren't note for note. Just senseless garbage. How about you recognize a phenomenal cover with an amazing bunch of musicians that paid tribute to the original artists. Everyone on that stage is top notch musicians and have made and continue to make amazing music.
Recognize greatness playing great music period.
Everyone except mustaine did a wonderful job, his solo was absolutely terrible, but petrucci played it perfectly
Theirs a difference between hate and ignorantly stating this is better then dime, it’s good but nothing to dimes playing
What a way to murder the most tastiest solo by the legend...Dime was in a totally different league as well...
Not to mention Anselmo' s amazing range on the outro...
Pantera as a a band will always remain unique...
Dave! What have you done!!! Its like coming home and discovering your dog just nibbled out your sofa ahahahaha
great cover!!!!!! never heard this one before. RIP DIME!!!!!!! WILL BE MISSED MORE THAN YOU EVER THOUGHT!!!!!!!!
This is the reason why dime, phil, vinnie and rex always in my heart... They're unique, beast and skillfull
i get why people give Dave shit for this solo, but to tell you the truth, Dime woulda been like , hell yeah brother, get it! and i feel we all should be like that, Getcha Pull!
Hey Dave, was this performance a tribute to Dimebag or to your Hangar 18 solo?
John killed it with tone and playing , And mustaine just.... kinda went for it. jeez....... , John should have done the lead for sure , And like I've seen on other comments in here , Dime was a very special type of player . And only he really.... Could execute his style . We Love ya Dime
cemetery theater dime labrie [labyrinth leads] awesome A VERY GREAT INSPIRING COVER
God I wish Dimebag could be on stage right now. Rest in peace Dimebag Darrell.
Massa pura ficou o cover fantástic Band 👏🇧🇷🖤🎸🤘👍🎧😎
Say what you want about Anselmo but no can pull off his vocals, at least no one I’ve heard. Love DT to bits and they nailed it otherwise. I especially loved the nuance of the guitar intro, absolutely spot on. And Mustaine was a nice surprise wasn’t expecting him to pop up 😆
Precision on the guitar for a fabulous tribute
Probably my favorite song from the Pantera catalogue. I've loved the song the minute I got home and played the CD back in 1990. I also like Dream Theater. Inviting Sir Russell Allen to the stage was a great idea, he's one of the best in the scene. I agree with many people in the comments, Mustaine's solo stinks...
I really love the lower register vocal range here! Didnt know he had it in him!
Nobody can replicate the tone Dime had, that unique tone came from his hands!!!
Boost mids in an EQ before a solid state Randall, scoop the shit out of em on the amp itself, add a shit ton of gain and there ya go
No it didn't. It came from the amp, the guitar, and the pedals. Hands/fingers are 10% of someone's tone at best.
It’s criminal to have so much talent on stage and then have that singer….
Mustaine: "I want to play the 2nd half of the solo"
Petrucci: "No. You'll butcher it!"
Mustaine: "I own this tour"
Petrucce: "Fine"
how'd I not see this before?
I was the 3rd person to hear this song,it had no vocals on it,Dime sat beside me in my car and told me it was a 1take lead with no dubs, played air guitar during the solo and said...what do you think...Look at my skin Darrell,I've got chicken skin, riddled with bumps,an amazing moment in my life,32 years ago
you were a friend of DIMEBAG
@@THORZAKKgameplays he used to be Diamond Darrell,we called him Dime,a Lady in Rendon, Texas was the one who knicknamed him DimeBag,,cause he was always looking for a DimeBag of weed
Wasn't sure about hitting those last vocal notes, but well damn...got 'em!
guess you guys arent ready for that yet...
But your kids are gonna LOVE it.
Really nobody understood what Dave did....thanks anyway..great tribute!
Two guitar players and a keyboard can't touch one Dime...
Mustaine’s solo sounded like a broken spring in a washing machine 😂
🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
Is that the singer from symphony x?
Das ist ja mal richtig geil geworden! ;)
Makes me really appreciate Anselmo's far superior vocals!
30 years ago maybe
5:13 is the best part of this cover
This guys voice!
Interesting concept having 2 singers with different but complimentary voices.
2021 would love to watch more of this 🔥🔥🔥
I mean, Dave did nothing more than sound like Dave. Can anyone blame him?
And wow. If James Labrie couldn't hit that last note, Phil must have been supernatural back in the day.
I just saw the Wylde/Benante version of Pantera 2 days in a row in SoCal and they were absolutely awesome. Checked it off my bucket list, for sure.
