Right, it's lost that gritty raw sound I mean it sounds really good as it should dt are amazing but something about sounds off because it sounds so right lmao so weird to say
The alternate picking really takes the bite out of it. Just goes to show we all have different strengths, even a player of JP's calibre has some weaknesses
TwoHeavyThrash He doesn't downpick much at all generally, not his style. Amazing how different it sounds when he downpicks and alternates. Downpicking is for James and his bionic arm.
My point exactly. It's all about technique. My technique makes me sound exactly the same whether I'm picking down or up, and especially if I'm playing something with a lot of distortion. I've always been picking up and down for certain stuff, and therefore my technique (which in general isn't very good) makes me sound pretty even.
Evan Ryon you really don't know james labrie. This was 2002, his vocals have improved so much, listen to the spirrit carries on, this is the life, the count of tuscany, a nightmare to remember (to only name a few)

geez usually I like james Labrie's vocals but him singing Puppets just sounds off.. it's either the song or him trying to sing differently or it's how the video was uploaded to youtube or a combination of all 3.
I was there. 1st ever DT show. So much fun. On that tour, they played a full cover album whenever they played 2 nights in a city on the 2nd night. But they never said which album itd be til it happened. We were so frickin stoked when we saw the puppets backdrop like no fkin way. We actually had a bit of a mosh pit going at a DT show 😆 it was awesome. I wanna see the full show
I was there too! At the Vic right? I was with a friend at the front of the elevated section halfway back on the left. It was awesome, not at the front but still an unobstructed view. Though I do remember hearing that it would be Puppets in advance? Maybe it was last minute and rumored, or a few days earlier? I think they had also done it in Europe somewhere.
every single member of dream theater is Technicaly very higher from those of metallica..still if you asked me which band would i choose to listen play master of puppets or any metallica song that would be metallica for sure
When the epic Song is arranged by the players with extraordinary complexity Hetfield : "Ok....ok....not bad, well you guys are on the same level...damn"
People claim Petrucci can’t downpick the riff. From what I see he definitely has the speed to do it, I just don’t think he was too worried about semantics such as downpicking a certain riff. It’s more efficient and makes more sense to alternate pick some parts.
No offense to Petrucci but why is everyone so obsessed about the guitarist in bands? Talk about the drums of the singer or the freaking bass for crying out loud
Scott Karrasch Yea cliff burton generally is held high among the metal community. And Portnoy's drumming has been praised for a while. I get your point though, generally the guitarist is given more/unearned respect.
Right. Well that's why I'm a little miffed because as a drummer, I always listen for the drum parts in a band. If the drummer only plays a standard 4/4 "boom, ts, pa, ts" throughout the song, I tend to get bored with it more easily. Following Mike Portnoy around after he left Dream Theater is actually how I got into Flying Colors, Transatlantic, and Neal Morse's projects. I'm not huge on bass but I do agree that they are as important as any other instrument. I never really felt the bass was ever to prominent in metallica songs though. Maybe it was just the mix but I never heard it too often, (except on Orion. That was Cliff Burton wasn't it? Okay that was really awesome). But Like Myung's bass parts in Dream Theater are outstanding and I always tend to listen more for Geddy's bass in Rush than Alex's guitar. The guy from Yes has some pretty good bass parts too. Just look at Tempus Frigit. Sorry this reply got a little long, music is really a big deal for me.
Metallica basically helped set the tone for metal music in the early 80's and Dream Theater recognizes that. The really, really respect what Metallica has done. I mean, why else would they want to cover the Master of Puppets album in its entirety? Metallica may not be as technically skilled as the individual members of Dream Theater, but they still did amazing work with music. In my own opinion, I think Metallica might sound a lot like DT if Cliff hadn't died because of his musical influence.
Say what you want about Dream Theater being more technically demanding but Metallica wins at writing catchier riffs and just generally more interesting songs in my opinion. Not bashing Dream Theatre in any way but I'd rather have the songwriting ability of 80s Metallica than DT. I will admit though Metallica has released some trash too.
I love how when DT does a cover they don't try to out-shred the original, they really do a good job of humbly honoring the other musicians.

Does anyone else remember that? Probably not because it has never, ever happened nor will it ever, ever happen.
Damn I tried to find it. Should have read the whole comment first lol
Petrucci Killed the solo! He should've played the whole thing on his own, forget the keyboard.
I love seeing shows I was actually at
They played this song so perfect that it has no soul
PERFECT OHKE MY BRUDDA
Lmao
Right, it's lost that gritty raw sound I mean it sounds really good as it should dt are amazing but something about sounds off because it sounds so right lmao so weird to say
they managed to make this song really sweet🥰
5:46 oh Petrucci 😐😐
I love Dream Theater, but James Hetfield is the man, He was composed brutal metal riffs and emotional solos (example at 4:00), respect for this man
Hmm, Metallica with actual drumming... Awesome!!!
The alternate picking really takes the bite out of it. Just goes to show we all have different strengths, even a player of JP's calibre has some weaknesses
when petrucci is too tired, they start playing this..
I bet even Petrucci is struggling with the downpicks.
TwoHeavyThrash He doesn't downpick much at all generally, not his style. Amazing how different it sounds when he downpicks and alternates. Downpicking is for James and his bionic arm.
+TwoHeavyThrash He didn't even did them
im 7 years late, but since this entire album was an encore, yes you're right
My point exactly. It's all about technique. My technique makes me sound exactly the same whether I'm picking down or up, and especially if I'm playing something with a lot of distortion. I've always been picking up and down for certain stuff, and therefore my technique (which in general isn't very good) makes me sound pretty even.
Hetfield's vocals are so awesome that he can't even sing them anymore.
man u made my day,
mustaine didn't even have anything to do w/ master of puppets ^^
These guys can play ANYTHING with ease...
Evan Ryon you really don't know james labrie. This was 2002, his vocals have improved so much, listen to the spirrit carries on, this is the life, the count of tuscany, a nightmare to remember (to only name a few)
***** I was referring to the live performances of these songs I listed after the 2002 period, albeit some are horrendous still, he's massively improved as of the last couple of years.
geez usually I like james Labrie's vocals but him singing Puppets just sounds off.. it's either the song or him trying to sing differently or it's how the video was uploaded to youtube or a combination of all 3.
those palm mutes in intro are way too perfect
In this video you can see what Portnoy does while taking a nap.
Freezing Moon 000
Sending Love from Dhaka
Nice to see Dream Theater playing a good song for once
Omg I had the baseball shirt Mike is wearing and totally forgot I lost it until I just saw it.
Comments on ANYTHING regarding metallica:
dOwNpIcKiNg dOwNpIcKiNg dOwNpIcKiNg dOwNpIcKiNg dOwNpIcKiNg
Everybody comparing this to the original when im just here like "HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!"
Labrie's vocals just don't fit in with the song
agreed
and he said speak to me instead of fix me...
whereabouts? I forget the lyrics of the song.
Giving me a migraine
I thought it was fine. I'd prefer hetfield's though. Probably just because I can hear master of puppets only one way.
I think they had also done it in Europe somewhere.
metallica hasn't played this song this good since they recorded it in 86 dream theater yay
I love DT, Metallica isn't that great for me. But this cover was actually weak. Puppets is a song full of energy and this cover lacks of it.
Why would you stand next to Mr. Olympia if you were Pee Wee Herman.
whatba epic keyboard solo
every single member of dream theater is Technicaly very higher from those of metallica..still if you asked me which band would i choose to listen play master of puppets or any metallica song that would be metallica for sure
When the epic Song is arranged by the players with extraordinary complexity
Hetfield : "Ok....ok....not bad, well you guys are on the same level...damn"
Listen to "Sum 41" cover of this!
Clive P punk rock/poppunk band they did pretty amazing ,but the vocalist's voice doesnt suit metal but he did well
Legend has it that Petrucci accidentally developed his muscles while practicing those downward picks 😁
When Jordan Ruddess had hair
He wasn't even in the band yet
It's kevin i guess
People claim Petrucci can’t downpick the riff. From what I see he definitely has the speed to do it, I just don’t think he was too worried about semantics such as downpicking a certain riff. It’s more efficient and makes more sense to alternate pick some parts.
it does not sound same though
No offense to Petrucci but why is everyone so obsessed about the guitarist in bands? Talk about the drums of the singer or the freaking bass for crying out loud
Scott Karrasch Cliff got/gets a lot of love, Portnoy gets plenty of love.
Cliff from Metallica? And Definately, I listen to Neal Morse, flying Colors, and Transatlantic now because Mike Portnoy drum for them now.
Scott Karrasch That's what I like about Dream Theater, each member's skills are voiced in their songs.
Jordan looks weird without his grey goatee and pointy hat...
not him
Ι did and I could not stop laughing!!!hahahhaha
Nice one!
petrucci looked like he could run a bakery in hoboken back in '02
Just in case anyone needs a reminder on how awesome Dream Theater is.
DT berhasil membawa lagu ini ke ruh nya sendiri.... lagu metallica seperti berada di alam yang lain
Played well, but I cannot like this cover.
This is garbage and vocals are a disgrace.
they are really good
No soy experto ni nada..pero desafina en varias partes de la canción el sr vocalista...
Down... down..down...down..down..down..down..down.. Semangat Joh Petruchi.. 😁😁
