The post pop-punk era Sum 41 is very interesting. What's funny about this cover is that this performance is AFTER their guitarist that brought the metal influences to some of their earlier stuff left the band (Dave Baksh). They had a pretty heavy album in Chuck (2004), then Dave left in 2006 and Sum 41 made the "softer", more pop-rock/punkier Underclass hero (2007) while claiming that the "metal phase is over". Many thought that Sum 41 would follow the same softer trend Linkin Park and many other punk and rock bands were, and they had every reason for doing it too. Instead they did the opposite. First they started covering Metallica more during their live shows like this one and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and then a couple years later went on to create Screaming Bloody Murder (2011) which easily rivals Chuck as the heaviest album they have ever released, still without their metal loving ex-guitarist Dave. In 2013 their original drummer left the band and in 2014 their frontman and vocalist Deryck Whibley's kidneys collapsed from long-time heavy alcohol abuse and many thought the band was over. While this was happening, Dave had listened to Screaming Bloody Murder on his own (2011), and realized that he "should not have left this band" and contacted the band for the first time in many years behind the scenes. In 2015, Sum 41 played some shows with a new drummer and during one of them, Dave made a guest appearance. Later that year they announced that Dave was permanently back in the band, WITHOUT kicking his original replacement, meaning they now have 3 guitarists. 2 albums later and they have maintained their "rock with metal influences"-sound, which makes them stand out in my opinion.

Never imagined Sum41, a punk rock band, would do such justice to this song, not even after their MTV Icon performance. This is even better. Only thing I missed was that near precise guitar solo by their ex guitarist.
Wow! I went into this video wondering just how bad this might get. I never would've dreamed that that Sum 41 could actually kill a Metallica cover like that! Color me impressed!
spaceinbetween Nearly every band in pop punk listens to metal. Hell, two members of Neck Deep were in hardcore bands and they covered Slipknot and even had Sam from Architects on a song. Misfits and Metallica even did tributes to each other back in the day. The communities may not get along perfectly, but a lot of bands are friends.
I'll also add what you listen to doesn't really affect what you play. I've been listening to heaps of Twenty One Pilots and acoustic stuff lately but all I've been playing is hardcore.
Definitely the best pop punk band out there. They're not even pop punk anymore, but unlike other pop punk bands didn't shift to pop rock, instead they got heavier. Massive respect to these dudes \m/
Lol all these fucking guitar professionals replying to you. Structurally its a pretty easy song but it takes practice and skill to actually get to sound perfect/good. Just because people can learn it doesn't mean it's an easy song.
I like to think of myself as a "good guitarist" and I have to say, playing this song as convincingly as Sum 41 is pretty hard. It might be "pretty easy" to just get through it, but not if you want the riffs and the leads to sound really crushing!
If this isn't your taste then okay. But for anyone to dislike this based on skill/ability is fucking ridiculous and honestly shouldn't even be taken seriously. Is this Metallica? no. Would I rather hear Metallica play this song? Yes. Is this a bad cover? Absolutely fucking not. They did a great, damn near spot on job...Stayed true to the song, didn't try to make it their own. They killed it. This is a hard piece of music, intricate parts that require a lot of technique, time signature changes, tempo changes. To have each member of the band play his part so well individually and then the band collectively play it with such precision is impressive. The feel, the energy, the drive, the timing, the tone, everything is there in spades. You can hear that they really listened to the original to capture all the nuances. The lead guitarist nailed James’s and Kirk’s solos and the drummer got all Lars’s fills down pat. You can tell they’re big Metallics fans and playing this for Sum 41 is fun and an homage to Metallica. Incredible musicianship from start to finish.
People only give them shit for what they made after Black. I only hear praise for their early work, which is undoubtedly fantastic. But their present live performances and studio-recordings have been utter shit :/
Lmao I actually like a lot of stuff on St Anger. As for Death Magnetic, the songs themselves are very cool but the mastering is a trainwreck. I mean the guiitar hero version are better than the studio release. Hardwired is badass, and with Spit out the Bone the old fucks showed they still have guts.
So you're saying songs like Ain't my bitch, hero of the day, bleeding me, king nothing, outlaw torn, fuel, devil's dance, unforgiven 2, attitude, fixxxer are bad? I do agree with St Anger though, Frantic is the only listenable song.
Well color me beyond impressed. Very well done. So much for being a punk band. No idea what the fuck do the people that clicked dislike want more? A bunch of sore haters really.
Apart from this being probably the best full band live cover of this song, it is the best TONE this song has ever got. We all love Metallica, but we must acknowledge that their tone isn't the best, and I'm thrilled to finally hear this song with a fat and mid-boosted tight guitar sound for the first time, never thought I'd see the day
depends on what era you are talking about, but nah Metallica's tone in the 80s, 90s and even these days is better. This is just played slow so it sounds tighter. Amazing cover fr
@@liliajensen5429 when we talk about tone we mean how the sound of the instruments are dialled in on the amp, pedals and the guitar itself. It's how much bass, mids and treble you dial in the amp, it's what pickup the guitar is set to, it's how much distortion you dial in the pedal or amp, how much the reverb is dominant on the sound, etc. It's literally everything you can do to make the instruments sound just like you want them to
Well you need to know that Bruce lives where the Sex Pistols was once one of the greatest bands and they can't clearly play shit, specially Sid who can't do shit and still was famous for "doing music" so I can undestand why he said that. But Sum41 is now over the stereotype of the punk talentless band, they're professionals doing music, maybe not as fast or complex like Maiden or any other metal band, but what they do they do it nice and well executed.

Never imagined Sum41, a punk rock band, would do such justice to this song, not even after their MTV Icon performance. This is even better. Only thing I missed was that near precise guitar solo by their ex guitarist.
Fucking great tone quality from all instruments. This is incredible.
you could easily throw this onto a live album
Wow! I went into this video wondering just how bad this might get. I never would've dreamed that that Sum 41 could actually kill a Metallica cover like that! Color me impressed!
I love Metallica and Sum 41. This is awesome.
Not gonna lie, for the first instrumental section I thought it was Metallica, they are spot on.
best cover i've heard, and if for you who dont know they all grew up on sabbath, maiden, and metallica they all have metal backgrounds
Erik Giovani then how they did end up in pop punk
spaceinbetween Nearly every band in pop punk listens to metal.
They have a classic heavy metal song too, for those who dont know, its called "Pleasure for Pain"
you mean *Pain for Pleasure :)
...and thats how you show your "musicianship". By getting out of your comfort zone and doing it well. Not bad Sum 41. Not bad at all.
Thrash metal IS their comfort zone 😂
Yeah this is fully in their comfort zone lol.
God only know how many times they played this when they were a bunch of no nothing Canadians playing this in their parents garage
Sum 41 are the most die hard Metal fans man. Nothing but respect for these guys. Badass cover.
I expected shit but this blew me away!
I love Lars as much as the next guy, but I've always wondered what masters of puppets sounded like with on time drums haha
can't believe mettalica stole their song ... Sum 41 best deth metal band of all time
but now sum 41 became tech grindcore
+AllhailLiverly hahahha
+trevor larson I like Black Sabaton more
Dying Corpse incorporates more technicality in their music though.
No they're post-black death slam core with bluegrass influence
Definitely the best pop punk band out there. They're not even pop punk anymore, but unlike other pop punk bands didn't shift to pop rock, instead they got heavier. Massive respect to these dudes \m/
I think Derrick kicked total @ss covering Master Of Puppets. So glad he’s doing better & living the dream!
shocked at how well they covered it, I laughed when I saw the title and then BOOM! accurate as hell
God DAMM that solo hits the "feels" and gives goosebumps.
I mean Sum 41 constantly references Metal in there songs. Priest and Maiden, Pain for Pleasure, their song Heavy Metal Jamboree etc
Derryck's performance is terrific here, perfection.
This song is so goddamn hard from just a playing standpoint. Hats off to you gents
+Ginger Jesus doesn't mean the song isn't difficult
Lol all these fucking guitar professionals replying to you. Structurally its a pretty easy song but it takes practice and skill to actually get to sound perfect/good. Just because people can learn it doesn't mean it's an easy song.
+Boba Fett Thank. You.
Show us :)
I like to think of myself as a "good guitarist" and I have to say, playing this song as convincingly as Sum 41 is pretty hard. It might be "pretty easy" to just get through it, but not if you want the riffs and the leads to sound really crushing!
I never liked sum 41 or was a fan but really good cover
Impressive!!!
They're really good
intergalactic24 you're an idiot
this cover is better than original) Guitarist and drummer are better
7:04 Always loved this bit, sounds so good!
that's basicly the riff of the entire song.
@@Xfade81 so?
6:03
@X fade Did you not hear the subtle changeup in the riff? jeez nerd
Have heard this done by many artists. But, give the 41 boys their due. One of the best versions I've heard. They kicked that songs ass.
I actually like this Metallica cover. I only like ONE Metallica cover.
LOL i see what you did there
+임준석 ;)
Nickelback has an amazing cover of sad but true.
+Daniel
Lemmy did a great Enter Sandman!
+SippinonMickeys Yes, and Metallica could never make Fat Lip, because it's not their fucking style, you genius.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!
I never thought this'd be so good
If this isn't your taste then okay. Just jammed out on it.
Far from a Sum 41 fan but god damn what a great cover! Great job boys, have to be the best live cover of MOP, that I’ve seen anyway.
That was probably the best master of puppets cover I've ever heard. Wish I could see them this Tuesday in Toronto. Sold out show for a reason!
You should check out trivium's cover
I didn't expect a performance of Master of Puppets like this! They played the solo good - Well done sum 41!
They played this song even more similar to original record than Metallica does on their live permormances last 20 years.
True
lol? no rythm guitar on the verse or pre chorus and both guitars should do the interlude solo
@@TheDaniel2345 deryck isnt solo guitarist
@@islamulbashev8179 deryck can shred but he doesn't do , he always says he fuckin sucks but the reality is he doesn't suck , it's a solid guitar player , but the guitar for him is a complement.
@@xavinachox seems he's very modest.
all these people thinking it's weird for a punk band to cover thrash metal. Where do think thrash came from?
*Pop punk...massive difference. Thrash certainly didn't come from it. That said, this is an awesome cover.
That's right
@@Nightbreed82 thrash metal came from punk rock
@@Nightbreed82 They're just punk that became popular
@@Nightbreed82 sum 41 is more skate punk. Pop punk is green day, starting line and California blink182.
.....did sum 41 seriously do a good cover of a thrash metal masterpiece? jesus fuck
They are way more than just another pop-punk band.
never seemed like it before i watched this
Dylon Swartwood yeh mate listen to something like "the bitter end" its basically a tribute to metallica style thrash, they had a lot of thashy type songs on their albums but of course they werent what got them known but its what kept them a fanbase I think was their actual metal influence
Dylon Swartwood Sum 41 has some heavier music, most notably the album Chuck. The song "Bitter End" is an obvious nod to Metallica.
***** lololol no ones as good as Metallica
No doubt one of the best covers ever!!
This is honestly one of the best Master Of Puppets covers I have ever heard, plus Deryck's voice is just amazing.
this is probably the best cover of this song
Nah fam checkout trivium's cover
William Zullo Triviums cover>>>>
@Metal Morphine ur vocals sound bad
Primus
Very impressed, had no idea they could be this good
I mean they are an Alternative Metal band 🤣
@TheAstronomyFloyd yeah i know, I've just never heard them perform anything at this level before and was surprised at how good it was
That drummer is so different on some things but yet very much on point. Top stuff. Great cover and respectful to one of the greatest metal bands
thats a good performance...seriously
People give Metallica so much shit but those old bastards banged out some of the best tunes ever and to this day people cover their shit.
Lex Luthor h
ur an idiot
Lead vocalists guitar tone is massive
I’m only learning guitar, what do you mean please?
@@liliajensen5429 when we talk about tone we mean how the sound of the instruments are dialled in on the amp, pedals and the guitar itself. It's how much bass, mids and treble you dial in the amp, it's what pickup the guitar is set to, it's how much distortion you dial in the pedal or amp, how much the reverb is dominant on the sound, etc. It's literally everything you can do to make the instruments sound just like you want them to
@@luizalves8071 Thanks for explaining man
With these punk vocals, you can clearly hear how much punk, thrash metal actually is... Great
Out of all the covers I’ve seen, sum 41 does amazing Metallica covers
I deleted my shit talking comment after I actually watched it.
This worked out a lot better than Limp Bizkit trying to cover Tool. That was artistic desecration.
You shouldn't have - this is a weak tribute at best
@@chomskyhitchens weak? this is above average
@@dud3man6969 I heard about heir RATM cover. That cover is actually a thing?
Bruce Dickinson says punk bands can't play their instruments. I beg to differ
Yes I know Sum 41's not really punk, but at least they can play Metal
Sum 41's first 2 albums were at least hard rock
Master of Puppets is cake to play dude.
Well you need to know that Bruce lives where the Sex Pistols was once one of the greatest bands and they can't clearly play shit, specially Sid who can't do shit and still was famous for "doing music" so I can undestand why he said that. But Sum41 is now over the stereotype of the punk talentless band, they're professionals doing music, maybe not as fast or complex like Maiden or any other metal band, but what they do they do it nice and well executed.
> can't clearly play shit
yeah whatever you say doofus
Because they grew up listening to old school metal
Tom did a great job performing the solo..even Kirk must appreciate it
Holy shit dude, this is so good!
I'm impressed they did the whole song.
Holy Shit. This just sounds as if the song was written for them. Could easily have been on Chuck
They probably had this and other Metallica songs mastered before they even did their original stuff
Один из лучших каверов на Хетфилда, что я слышал!!!👍👍👍👍 браво!!!
пацаны ваще ребята! :)
то чувство, когда кавер звучит лучше оригинала
От души вообще 🤘🎸🔥
Speaking 100% honestly, I was expecting this to be some wannabe losers but y’all are good af
I do like metal quite a bit, but the comment section shows how intolerant of other genres metal fans are. They're worse than rap fans
Chris Trlak but we’re right :)
fuck off
@@ertegin you just proved his point, dickhead
Jesus Zombie Christ. This cover kills! Note for note, tone to tone...spot on! Bravo!
Sum 41 just became more badass
This is like if blink and green day had a kid, which already equaled Sum 41...but then that kid went and said, you know what? I want to try metal...and it actually worked hahaha
And that decision changed the kid's life forever
Until he struggled with alcohol abuse that he was admitted into the hospital in 2014
and then he got fully covered and started to make more hard rock
Matt LeMasters I see it more as if the beastie boys and green day had a kid then it would be sum 41
TheBaconDinosaur-SS that's actually pretty damn accurate
TheBaconDinosaur-SS Fat Lip is basically the perfect child of Beastie Boys and Green Day
This was the very first song I ever heard from sum 41, years later they’re one of my favorite bands of all time and they got me into pop punk. I was actually bored with music for a while until I found this, I think it’s fair to say this one video changed my life.
What a DEEP POWERFUL Sound!!!! I dont know these guys but Im gonna learn!! Their SOIND is incredible and they are tight AF Thanks for sharing
Fuck much respect , u nailed it!
As a hardcore Metallica fan I approve! Good job!!!
I already like Sum 41. To know that they covered a song from my favorite band, and did a great job, makes me like them even more.
Damn they really killed it big time on this cover. I like it. I forget how heavy Sum 41 can be sometimes.
Came here expecting trash, came away with thrash instead
Well done
Sum41 is badass i never disappointed to them....
That's a solid fuckin effort. Well done lads, from a long time Metallica fan 🤘
Panic at the green day boy is a great grunge band and i love this ac/dc cover
Right? I never new Gerard Way could sing Maiden like this!
I see a lot of respect in this cover. Good job guys ! Really good job !
