Yep. Normally Hetfied is driving the tunes and Lars is meandering around them. Sometimes fast sometimes slow sometimes I. The pocket. This shows how Lombardo was driving Hetfields tempo…early on there is a really crisp slightly ahead of time cymbal hit that demonstrates this perfectly. The drumming at the end is all perfectly consistent in its timing despite all hell being unleashed on that kit. It’s Lars gig but you can’t deny they sound more metal with Lombardo

Dave Lombardo always gives powerpacked performances. Every hot is great and knocks the audience. He completely changed the environment when he played the drums.

You can tell how much Rob enjoyed having Lombardo as the drummer. Rob gets a lot of hate but let’s be honest, his musicianship is incredible compared to the rest of the band. He was waiting for a badass double bass drum.

Such a technical drummer. There is a consistency in his playing that is really hard to define. It's especially notourious here where one is used to Lars' more raucous approach.
They're so used that Lars butchers the 3:48 come back part that the band is early and Lombardo is perfectly in time, because he knows how to count the 4 times bar and finishes the phrase beautifully, even leaves a clear space to reintroduce the verse. VERY PRO.
It was fascinating to watch the communication between Rob and Dave and also Dave looking at James for the cue to go into the solo part. Near the end, it sounded like James was having trouble keeping up with Dave. Such a great performance overall.

I once saw James drum for Metallica back in September 1989. Am I Evil? was the song. Lars was singing, Kirk was playing bass, and Jason was guitarist. This was at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.
Hetfield is up there with the best rhythm guitarists on the planet. This had to feel amazing with Dave on drums. For years people have said imagine Metallica with Lombardo on drums.
Which is expected for a band that big... I'm just a casual Metallica listener more of a British Metal guy but this was night and day. If I was them I would quit Metallica and form a new band with a good drummer and take the songs. Kinda like KKs Priests. James' Metal Buddies.

I once saw James drum for Metallica back in September 1989. Am I Evil? was the song. Lars was singing, Kirk was playing bass, and Jason was guitarist. This was at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.
When that double bass kicked in James looked back at Dave like, "it's gonna be like that huh?"

Metallica with Lombardo makes Metallica actually listenable
Hetfield is up there with the best rhythm guitarists on the planet. This had to feel amazing with Dave on drums. For years people have said imagine Metallica with Lombardo on drums.

It almost happened in 86 apparently. The rest of the band wanted to fire Lars but when cliff died it took that possibility out of the equation.

They have never sounded that tight. The feeling when the whole band is locked in together is a beautiful thing.
Which is expected for a band that big... I'm just a casual Metallica listener more of a British Metal guy but this was night and day. If I was them I would quit Metallica and form a new band with a good drummer and take the songs. Kinda like KKs Priests. James' Metal Buddies.

Man I remember back in the 90s learning most Metallica songs on my guitar, figuring it out some by ear, some by those sheet music books you can purchase at a guitar shop.
This was one of em. Love it to this day.
