You can hear Lombardo sometimes doesn't know the next bit but quickly switches to the correct tempo/rhythm. I wish he was Metallicas drummer and Lars took a backseat from now on, he is a monster(and not in Slayer anymore anyway).
I feel now that he should replace Lars and Lars should just manage the band as he doesn't seem to have the passion to play drums he once had. He should also use his own kit as Lars has a terrible set up. Or even get Paul Bostaph or Vinnie Paul to replace Lars as I feel they would elevate the band again.
JPX64 That’s his drum tech not it’s nowhere as bad that the fact Lars had been playing for like 25 years at that point and for him to get as bad as he did is embarrassing but Lars’ drum tech playing history is unknown so I give him the benefit of the doubt unlike Lars
The Creeping Death performance is one of the best things ever in a metal ever recorded. You can literally see Jame's face just make this totally overjoyed look when Joey just aced his drum fill into the crash hits in perfect time at 25:11. Just one of the best things to see, so satisfying. At 25:15 he just shakes his head in disbelievement that it all sounds this good.
+josueDx300 Only thing that sounds better is the double bass part. Too many mistakes. Dave has the speed, Lars has the groove. Not the same without him, something is missing...
The Extinct Surgeon He used to be good, not anymore. He himself said that he stopped practicing during Load and ReLoad (that's also when he reduced his drum kit to a much simpler one). Lars became a *meh* drummer after the Black Album tour ended. He replaced his ride with a china, took away two toms, took away many parts from his drum kit, stopped practicing, etc. I guess fame and fortune got to his head and he didn't care about how good he was anymore. He used to be a *KILLER* with the drums, nowadays... he's just good.
They probably played from where they would have been in the set if they had showed up on time and master was rather early on in the set at this point i think so they had to sacrifice it
I love the smile James makes at 25:16 after Joey does that fill just after 25:11 he’s so impressed and enjoying Joey’s playing. Must have been huge for Joey to get that type of approval from one of his heroes!
They are genuinely having fun here! Playing the same songs night after night, month after month, year after year, each song the same way, with the same people - you can end up disengaged with the music. Having some part of that formula radically altered suddenly forces you to fully engage with it again. This is why the "unplugged" thing became popular back in the 90's, and why this is such a great set. Is it "perfect?" No, and it shouldn't be. Live music should be fresh and exciting.
What impressed me most is how Joey played so tastefully on Nothing Else Matters. Chops are absolutely the most important part for Metallica but his swing and his groove and just everything else is perfect
I was here in 2004, and it was a very hot weekend. Me and my friends were burnt to a crisp. When Metallica started to play Fade to black (38:25) it started to rain (just a drizzle) it was the only relief we’d had from the scorching heat. Paired with that opening riff makes it one of the most spiritual experience of my life
You can really feel a different energy flowing on that stage that night. Metallica were brutal and angry as when they were young. The audience was so fucking lucky that night to witness that event. I would pay more than the normal price of the ticket to see Metallica playing with a drummer like Dave. Lars, you can still be the manager and founder of Metallica, Please hire Dave!!!
I was at this concert. The crowd was ready to turn nasty when we thought metallica would cancel. Was awesome seeing this, a well decent compromise. Creeping death was killer!
Bless his lol Danish ❤....poor child probably had a nervous breakdown after listening to two years worth of Kirk's jokes. Rest in peace Joey and thank you for coming in clutch! 🥁🥁
RIP Joey. What a day it was. Whilst we were waiting for Metallica to show we had a massive empty or filled with piss plastic bottle fight. I remember when Joey played we collectively gasped as he played songs we've heard a million times and brought them to another dimension. "Joey, you rock!" said James Hetfield
I mean, Death Magnetic was great but the drumming wasn't top notch like older Metallica. I'd pick it though since Lars did better than he usually did. So I mean that was good drumming
+Andi Wiegand there's plenty that are lars' age that can still drum well like lombardo, and if hes not doing it right only cause he doesn't feel like it thats even worse
That Creeping Death. I wished they've done this version with Jason on bass and backup vocals. His energy would have matched the Joey's drumming. Rob is still awesome though...
This was my first Metallica gig, they came on nearly 2 hours late, it was like a battlefield trying to dodge piss missiles etc, sheer mayhem and I reckon a riot was brewing but, boy, it was an epic show in the end. Lombardo on horsemen was stunning. Seen them 4 times since and this still ranks as my favourite performance.
Joey with approximately 1 hour to rehearse. Amazing job, Metallica played at another level that night (a lot of energy). Drum work on Creeping Death was fantastic.
RUclips Lars performances of Battery from 1986 and he played it extremely fast, and with all the double bass parts in it. Even better than what Lombardo did here. Not that I'm discrediting his performance because he did a great job, but it was Lars' song, so he obviously knew it inside out and it showed during the live performances. Especially when Newstead first joined and they were still messed up over Cliff's death. So all those emotions came out through their music, and they just played everything faster, but even though they played faster, Lars still did all the double bass parts.
I didn't like it. I thought he overplayed the double kick. It was more about showing off his chops rather than doing what best services the song. Same with Bells.
Elias lo pierden porque creo yo que ellos esa parte lo tocan más lento respecto a la versión de estudio, y Joey respeta el tiempo original, no sé si me explico
I was there for this and it was the first time I saw Metallica. I didn’t fully realise how historic this gig was at the time. One thing to note is, if there was ever any proof that James is the rhythm section of the band, this is it. The reason Lars can do his fills and it doesn’t cause a problem is because James is the one who they’re all playing to. Considering they had zero rehearsal and changed the set list 4 times before they came out, the fact they didn’t miss a beat is outstanding
As cool as this is, and as good as Joey and Dave are, it gives me anxiety to watch this because I feel like it could fall apart at any moment. If the drummers could have had more time to rehearse, this would have been outstanding.
Sometimes that is the beauty of Rock N Roll...Notice that Dave didn't try anything risky during his turn...kept it nice and simple and still sounded better than Lars.
for the the first time in their metallica careers, james, kirk and rob played with drummers who can actually keep up a steady tempo and rythm. it's clearly visible that they are loving their time together. must have felt like ''cheating on your spouse and really enjoying the mistress' sex but marriage comes first'' type of fling.
Oh Joey, you absolute legend. What an amazing performance. Especially after having done their own set. I wonder what state these drummers were in when they offered to fill in short notice lol, probably half way through partying and chilling then back to work to save Metallica. I can't lie, sliptallica are the best.
What a great show this was. Imagine getting called up to a drum gig from your favourite bands, a fresh, rearing to go Metallica and you've played a full hour set beforehand- that's a adrenaline rush for you!
Joey Jordison would be perfect for Metallica, his drumming compliments the songs so well and with his experience with playing guitar and bass and song writing, Joey would bring Metallica to a whole other level!
Imagine you're Slipknot's drummer, you have already played a full set with your band with all those crazy drum parts and you get asked to play basically another set with Metallica and deliver a brilliant performance with zero rehearsals. Joey was an absolute monster of a drummer.

@1:27 that guy shouting ”It’s alright he’s the worst one anyway” give him a hug
Lol
Hahaha
holy shit man, props for catching that gem.
4 years too late, I know, but they're also chanting "Lars is a wanker" afterwards
Lars is allergic to the word "download", so it's understandable why he doesn't want to play there .. Btw R.I.P Joey Jordison , you are a great drummer
Unironically the best comment I have ever seen.
Joey got asked to play in one of favorite bands and at 37:09 being told you rock by James in front of millions. Man. I cant imagine how happy and humbled joey felt. He had a short life, but glad he was able to experience this and so many other cool things. May he rest in peace.
Lars is still one of the main songwriters, so they still kinda need him
that would be cool since Slayer and Metallica are part of the big 4 :D
Lombardo doesn't know how to arrange James riffs into complete songs.
Or they should make it a double drum kit with lars only pounding the snare but that would sound terrible hearing he isn't tight
Lombardo was playing Mechanix instead of FH lol
XDXDXDXD
has the wrong band! XD
I have the same thoughts! Haha
I know its a joke but FH has double bass as well.
Oh yes! He knows where the real shit's at! Droogie for life!
OMG the double bass part in battery
It sounded beautiful!!!
Lars did it all the time in the 80's and early 90's.
Well, tiger drummers know of cymbals other than the China and actually have rides... who'd of thunk it
Live in Seattle 1989
@@lastname9268 before lars stopped practicing and caring about his drumming as much as he did during the 80s and early 90s
Lars sounds good here :)
+reiner bergkamen I don't know if it's sarcasm or troll. pls.
+Paulo Seibert sarcasm :)
+reiner bergkamen fuckin' everyone are playing better than Lars :) Bass drum madness on battery just kills
JPX64 That’s his drum tech not it’s nowhere as bad that the fact Lars had been playing for like 25 years at that point and for him to get as bad as he did is embarrassing but Lars’ drum tech playing history is unknown so I give him the benefit of the doubt unlike Lars
RIP Joey, accomplished more in 30 years than anyone could do in a lifetime.
cierto
The Creeping Death performance is one of the best things ever in a metal ever recorded. You can literally see Jame's face just make this totally overjoyed look when Joey just aced his drum fill into the crash hits in perfect time at 25:11. Just one of the best things to see, so satisfying. At 25:15 he just shakes his head in disbelievement that it all sounds this good.
i could listen to joey play metallica literally all day. i wish there was more
men fucking battery sounds so fucking good with lombardo
+josueDx300 That's what I call a recharged battery! :D
+DaveC Ba dum tss
+josueDx300 Only thing that sounds better is the double bass part. Too many mistakes.
Dave has the speed, Lars has the groove. Not the same without him, something is missing...
+PaleBlueDot Oh and Joey has exaggerated a little...
+PaleBlueDot Lars fan spotted :P
This should've been the set list.
Battery
Blackened
Dyers Eve
One
Creeping Death
St. Anger
Hit The Lights
Whiplash
Enter Sandman
Replace st anger with damage inc and it would be perfect
Dakota Duran you mean all of the songs that Lars can’t do anymore lmao
Jared deArmond that would be all of them
Master of Puppets goes between One and Creeping.
Fight fire w fire, cmon man
14:55 holy shit, now THAT is a bass solo
Joey...Best of the Best!!!!!!!!! Forever🤘🤘
This is by far my favorite Metallica live performance. EVER!! Oh what could have been.
i wish there was a better audio mix for this historic concert.
Lombardo always kills it with the double bass. Holy fuck. He should replace Lars.
Well what did you expect from a slayer drummer :p
not just the double bass. He is way better. I am not a huge Slayer-fan, but Lombardo is awesome
MemoryLaneCinema lombardo is much better than lars but lars is still pretty darn good, I mean dyers eve and all that other afja crap
David Fuller he did play dyers eve
That last part of Battery with the double pedal sounds SO MEAN with Lombardo!!! Kickass
+Frederik Thaysen Terribly awesome !!
Dave Lombardo and Joey Jordison did a masterful job on the songs they were given. I especially like Joey’s use of double bass during Creeping Death.
Metallica rules. Drummers show love. Haters keep on hating.
+MrJeezus of course they rule. Still, sometimes I wish they would put some effort in rehearsing the stuff they dish out on tour
Wow. The only Metallica show ever where they didn't play Master Of Puppets was the one night they had someone who could actually play it.
They probably played from where they would have been in the set if they had showed up on time and master was rather early on in the set at this point i think so they had to sacrifice it
@@mrbevelaqua8649 It will be safe if Lars actually could play what he created, but he can't
@@mrbevelaqua8649 35 years playing wrong, so he can't
@@mrbevelaqua8649 yeah, and he can't play it as he wrote it or recorded it
Lars is one of the worst drummers out there and the rest of the band seem too have enjoyed this gig more than others just my opinion.
HEs like, fuck imagine we had a good drummer...
re-watching today to celebrate what an amazing drummer Joey was. Rest In Power
R.I.P. Joey. . Jammin out with Cliff & Dime on Heavens main stage.
Joey fucking murdered Seek and Destroy. Even James looked over at him after the interlude/solo like "holy shit dude."
It must of been a real treat for MetallicA to play with drummers.
That's implying that Lars isn't a drummer.
russkate88 That's the joke, genius.
Oh. Okay! I just thought he didn't realize.
It's not that Lars isn't good or bad but great to hear Metallica with a slightly different sound. It's one of these "what if" moments
What impressed me most is how Joey played so tastefully on Nothing Else Matters. Chops are absolutely the most important part for Metallica but his swing and his groove and just everything else is perfect
its funny to hear metallica songs live as they're suppoused to sound lol. It almost feels wrong to have them sound this tight.
33:07
Joey be lookin around like: lel that was fun
Dave drumming: here's the songs, the beat, perfection, quality drumming
Joey drumming: lars is going to buy a new kit after im done
I was here in 2004, and it was a very hot weekend. Me and my friends were burnt to a crisp. When Metallica started to play Fade to black (38:25) it started to rain (just a drizzle) it was the only relief we’d had from the scorching heat. Paired with that opening riff makes it one of the most spiritual experience of my life
It was part of the script
Seeing this after Joey just past really hurts. He was the best drummer Metallica ever had. RIP to the GOAT 🤘
Just came back watching this after a long time. Already missing Joey.
RIP Joey. What a day it was. Whilst we were waiting for Metallica to show we had a massive empty or filled with piss plastic bottle fight. I remember when Joey played we collectively gasped as he played songs we've heard a million times and brought them to another dimension. "Joey, you rock!" said James Hetfield
Those fucking piss bottles. It was like that scene in 300 where the arrows block out the sun
Yeah. I'm sure their was a bag of shit thrown at one point!
@@nealo814 when something brown was overhead you're hoping for mud and dirt and if anything yellow was above you're hoping for unfinished beer!
@@Apocalypsedude64 no fuckin way!! That's gnarly 🤠🤮
That insane speed and precision of Mr Dave is truly worth listening to it again
"Metallica is feeling better than ever" Yes, that means you should be calling up Dave Lombardo and doing a little switcharoo.
Metallica get so much heavier and meaner live when the drum parts is actually played as they were recorded haha. Ending of Battery is crazy.
MEATALLICA kicks ass with dave lombardo! he is a freaking BEAST!!! they haven't sound like this since 86 when they opened for Ozzy.
Or even up until the Justice album
SlaytanicTallicaFan999 Death Magnetic...?
I mean, Death Magnetic was great but the drumming wasn't top notch like older Metallica. I'd pick it though since Lars did better than he usually did. So I mean that was good drumming
May he's too old for it? Or just can, but don't want or don't need to play even harder.
+Andi Wiegand there's plenty that are lars' age that can still drum well like lombardo, and if hes not doing it right only cause he doesn't feel like it thats even worse
they probably hadn't played Battery that fast since they originally wrote it lol Dave killed it
That Creeping Death. I wished they've done this version with Jason on bass and backup vocals. His energy would have matched the Joey's drumming. Rob is still awesome though...
i was there
Congrats.
***** No one cares lol
don't worry about it, always some sweaty neck bearded kids on the internet gotta put a downer on everything.
binarySunset what was it like?
Rest in piece Joey, such a sick drummer!
You can see how happy the band was to have Joey Jordison behind the kit, finally a good drummer!
Now Joey's gone this gig is even more special. Glad to of been there. R.I.P Joey Jordison
RIP Joey, you'll be missed!
Joey with approximately 1 hour to rehearse. Amazing job, Metallica played at another level that night (a lot of energy). Drum work on Creeping Death was fantastic.
No it doesn't it suks with different drummers
@@Miist3rDuce1in fairness it's been suboptimal since Jason left. joey killed this set
A perfect solution for Metallica - Lars would be still manager but hire Lombardo on drums.
Yeah. Lombaro's double bass sounds amazing. That's how Lars should play
That's how Lars used to play.
yea Lombardo KILLED Battery, especialy the end with the double bass parts
RUclips Lars performances of Battery from 1986 and he played it extremely fast, and with all the double bass parts in it. Even better than what Lombardo did here. Not that I'm discrediting his performance because he did a great job, but it was Lars' song, so he obviously knew it inside out and it showed during the live performances. Especially when Newstead first joined and they were still messed up over Cliff's death. So all those emotions came out through their music, and they just played everything faster, but even though they played faster, Lars still did all the double bass parts.
Zmiyu yes absolutely!
Ohh boy, DAVE LOMBARDO!!! What a drummer and what a great man. RESPECT.
joey throws so much double bass into his part
I did laugh a bit during last caress with a shit ton of double bass but I still like it
That's his style.
That is Dave Lombardo
@@nuuttiniemi-nikkola9200 Hardcore punk, am I right?

"We feel better than ever..." Yes, James, You said it yourself!))
DRUMTALK Russia and sound better
5:14 The beast has been unleashed to take the virginity of Lars's drum kit
Joey jordison is incredible RIP joey my favorite, the number one, how much we need
Creeping Death is amazing with Joey
sensacional!
+Alex Oliveira en efecto pero no se su te diste cuenta que perdieron el ritmo después del DIE!
I didn't like it. I thought he overplayed the double kick. It was more about showing off his chops rather than doing what best services the song. Same with Bells.
Needs Jason's vocals
Metallica with Dave Lombardo playing a song written by Dave Mustaine is like a thrash holy grail
Ah I never realised this that it was written by Mustaine. Thats brilliant.
HAHAHAHAHAHA THAT'S TOTAL BULLSHIT!! HE DIDN'T WRITE IT AT ALL! YOU DAVE FANBOYS ARE FKN RIDICULOUS. METALLICA OWNS megadeth
@@Sandesh98147 infact it's a BULLSHIT!! LMFAO he didn't! dave fanboys are a joke lol
@@Sandesh98147 that’s why mechanix by megadeath has the same instruments and drums, just at a different tempo.
best live performance of lars since 1994!
As cool as this is, and as good as Joey and Dave are, it gives me anxiety to watch this because I feel like it could fall apart at any moment. If the drummers could have had more time to rehearse, this would have been outstanding.
It does feel like that...
Sometimes that is the beauty of Rock N Roll...Notice that Dave didn't try anything risky during his turn...kept it nice and simple and still sounded better than Lars.
Jeff Richards Almost anyone can sound better than this last Lars, actually.
In all fairness though, with Lars it does fall apart in the end!
that is what makes it still sound like metallica, it never sounds like lars has practiced anything.
for the the first time in their metallica careers, james, kirk and rob played with drummers who can actually keep up a steady tempo and rythm. it's clearly visible that they are loving their time together. must have felt like ''cheating on your spouse and really enjoying the mistress' sex but marriage comes first'' type of fling.
No the drummers overplayed it it suks with different drummers
Best analogy right there.
5:21 just LOOK at Kirks energy during that double bass part! He’s LOVING THAT BEHIND HIM!
Seek and destroy suena de ptm con el contrabajo que le. Mete joey simplemente hermoso 😢
Joey always in our hearts🙏🥁💔🤟
Joey Jordison would be perfect for Metallica, his drumming compliments the songs so well and with his experience with playing guitar and bass and song writing, Joey would bring Metallica to a whole other level!
