The best voice James had in he's career in my opinion was that Live Shit Tour...those legendary Mexico Show in 93...best thing Metallica ever recorded that dosent include The God of Bass Metal himself , Cliff Burton .Jason was Killing it tho
That just shows how opinions can vary, because I consider this the low point. In the 80s and early 90s he was basically abusing his voice and he sounded awesome late 80s early 90s. Then he blew out his voice and basically had to relearn how to sing live. I feel that he's still searching and learning here and he sounds better now (2022) then in this recording. Had never seen Metallica live before and this show definitely had an impact on me. I was already listening metal music back then but this stuff really got me hooked on it. I think I've watched this concert and Cunning Stunts a hundred times by now and I still love 'em. To me, this is Metallica in their prime.
Biggest disaster of the century. Huge mistake to have such aggressive bands all in a row. Everyone in this thread seems to forget all the rape, abuse, death dehydration, starvation and needs to listen to the podcast breakstuff. They played great but there definitely needed to be more mellow acts in between. And security, any security at all.
Kirk Hammet proud Filipino... Mabuhay Pinoy... Metellica Metallica Metallica.... I remember this even when i was 18 years old, Woodstocks 99.. waiting until dawn..
Those of us who were there, remember the thunder and lightning striking during this performance. God, that was Fing INSANE! Happy 25th, to those of us who dragged suitcases filled with ML cans like A MILE to setup our crappy tent for the weekend. haha
There was was tense, angry, almost frustrated quality to James that changed his demeanor around this time. His personal life and celebrity life were really starting to blur into one, I think. And it made him seem more intimidating than other periods of his life.
This performance was amazing, but when i heard one i just got chills everywhere, the almost distorted, dark, gritty and panicked playing really set the tone during the bridge god it was amazing
This was Saturday night. I didn't really lose my voice until Sunday afternoon during Godsmack and by the time Flea came onstage naked Sunday night, I was deaf too.
Kenneth Richardson haha I wasn’t sure if he was naked and then I realized he was butt ass naked. We were all so thrashed. And drunk. And High. Saw tons of tiddies. And pussy.
The self-induced abuse people withstand during metal gigs is unbelievable. Everything is fun and games until you need a device to hear again at the age of 45.
One of my greatest memories of my life. Woodstock 99'. 3 days in 100+ degree weather. All of this with my best of friends #Pkells, #Rbrusky, #Dkorbs and r.i.p Bobby Cunningham... Never ever forget when you guys came on stage and they were calling for a major storm to pass thru while metallica was about to take stage. Never forget the rain wind and best the sound of metallica lighting up the sky nevr mind the lightning. Sitting their on whatever i was feeling at that moment. It was truly amazing. Distant memory but this video produced in 2014 will forver take me back. Turning the page and nothing else mattered at that time truly...simply amazing metallica!!!
Probably my favorite version. You can feel the emotion James is pouring into that performance. Just up there baring his frickin' soul to a bunch of drunk and high teenagers brave enough to stay to see them.
Sorry to post again. You people had to have been there ro experience it. First off after 3 days of 100+ degree weather, the storm that passed right when they came on was incredible. Added to already amazing experience. He was drenched cause it was pooring out. The lightning and thunder, winds. They came on speakers to warn us of the storm. Didn't stop them from rocking one if the most amazing sets. Like i said u had to have been there. I have been to tons of concerts but nothing will ever come close to woodstock 99....
Daniel DAmico remember what the announcer said ? He said that the weather channel called since we were considered New York's third city and warned us of a storm coming our way, the crowd when nuts !!!! He continues to say we spoke to the guys in Metallica and they will play rain or shine , which again made us go crazy !!!! The clouds came in like they scene in poltergeist as ecstasy of gold came on!!! Fucking epic time that I will never forget !!!!
Dude it threatened to storm with high winds. There was absolutely no rain during the Metallica set.. maybe a mist if anything. It passed right over all of us thankfully! 👊🏼
@@labs3768 I feel ya, but I'd say thats just because it's simply fun to get down to their simple hip hop beats! That's their technique as a band they expose you to their anti government politics by repeated hip hop lyrics. It's fucking brilliant!
One of my favorite concerts of theirs and it was almost the END of that classic lineup and that classic SOUND and energy. After Jason left (the following year) it was never the same.
I must've watched this 1000 times when i was like 13. Playing along woth my guitar each time driving my parents crazy. On DSL speed back in like 2003. When everyone had kazaa and practically gave my computer aids to watch this.
He's done it a lot in live performances. Though you could be right, I'm sure he was just lazy or didn't care about playing it. I've sadly watched too many of their concerts to know he's never played that part lol.
@@___yaang___ there is a fill in that part of the original song but Lars never plays it at shows, so technically Lars can’t suck because he simply just doesn’t play the short fill
Here I was 18, ribs bruised. Came only to see metallica. Made my way upfront during rage. Most forward pressure I've ever felt. Amazing. Glad I left right after this.
I think there are certain bits of footage from Woodstock which get picked up by RUclips's copyright stuff. That's why very few of the sets on YT are complete. Better than nothing though!
Sucks though! I always remember Creeping Death being on the Woodstock 99 compilation (the red disc), and that was definitely among the highlight tracks of the album!
Ikr! Creeping Death was one of the highlights of this show, James smashing the drums with his hands, Lars playing in the right tempo, Jason's backing vocals, James and Jason singing together. Its a shame that it isn't included here.
Matt Desrochers shit I thought I was losing my mind. Every time I watch bands I saw here I could swear I remember songs that aren’t included in these videos. I’ve never noticed any obvious editing out though. Thought I was going nuts. Makes sense now.
This would be the best live concert ive ever seen. Papa Het's voice was absolutely amazing. Its like listening to early 90s James combined with 2020 James. 💯💯❤️❤️❤️
I remember watching this shit on PPV back in the day. I begged my parents to order it for me so I could see Metallica's performance (as well as others...and I was only in High School at the time hence why I had to ask my parents lol). I may still have the VHS recording I did of it somewhere.

to bad i was born in 2000. this is pretty insane. if i could go back in time, i would go here. except maybe backstage so i wouldn't die in the savage crowd
Jaden Dubecky nobody died. 1 person in the entire 3 days died from a heart attack. Pits aren’t as bad as you’d think. As long as you don’t mind huge crowds and getting bruised up a little. And if you’re a man. A few sick fucks gang raped some women at this one ruined it for everyone.
Amazing performance and energy. Everyone sounds fantastic, especially James. His voice is gorgeous here, the precision is crazy. A true shame about all of the horrific stuff that happened that weekend.
My brother and I were standing maybe 25 feet away from James, just on the other side of the barrier. This was the end of a long hot day and whatever energy I’d lost came back from the first note of So What. This was the best I’ve seen them, the crowd was on fire, and you felt every note. It was as massive as it sounds.
@@PTRK490 I mean James Hatfield was also a massive douche back in the say. He started to mellow out and now he’s loved. Axl hasn’t walked off stage in like 10 years but still gotta keep up with the same cliche joke.
So just watched the Woodstock 99 documentary on Netflix. They only really showed Korn and Limp Bizkit. Thought they would've showed Metallica because it would've been undoubted crazy as fuck
The performance of turn the page makes me feel so sad. The band is pouring their hearts out in this song and everyone, Metallica and the crowd giving away every last ounce of energy. Unfortunately little did we know Jason had run out pretty much and the band just about there also. Such a pure Metallica just pure sentiment.

Had never seen Metallica live before and this show definitely had an impact on me. I was already listening metal music back then but this stuff really got me hooked on it. I think I've watched this concert and Cunning Stunts a hundred times by now and I still love 'em. To me, this is Metallica in their prime.
Sicktoid Obviously you've never seen Metallica live in their prime then. Born too late in the game.
Watch metallica in Seattle 1989 or Moscow 1991 and let me know if you still think this is their prime
Props to the security guard simultaneously jamming out whilst holding the crowd back at 19:57
Best seat in the house!! 😂
Security: "I am the backstage pass" 😂
Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine, and Metallica. All on one stage. In one day. In that order. I like all three bands by the way.
We will have to agree to disagree but as Meat Loaf would say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad!
Anyone who moshed their way through all three bands must have been thoroughly sore and fucked up by the end of that stretch!
@@mrconfusion87 yeah, one guy even suffocated to death
i was there..it was amazing and great experience... love Woodstock
Im proud to be a 90s kid.... This Woodstock is fucking brutal and awesome... wanna go back this time its 2020 January..
anyone out there?
Kirk Hammet proud Filipino...
Mabuhay Pinoy...
Metellica
Metallica
Metallica....
I remember this even when i was 18 years old,
Woodstocks 99.. waiting until dawn..
Y'know the backspace key exists right?
This is better than the original Seek and Destroy. Jason’s vocals are so fucking good.
Jasons bass in Wherever I may Roam is the definition of what the Bass Guitar is for, fucking Brutal.
Those of us who were there, remember the thunder and lightning striking during this performance. God, that was Fing INSANE! Happy 25th, to those of us who dragged suitcases filled with ML cans like A MILE to setup our crappy tent for the weekend. haha
I think James was kinda pissed off at this show.
He was probably drunk as fuck here
Check out some of the shows right after cliff died in 86...hes fucking possessed
Makes his performance much better
There was was tense, angry, almost frustrated quality to James that changed his demeanor around this time. His personal life and celebrity life were really starting to blur into one, I think. And it made him seem more intimidating than other periods of his life.
@@duaneshank6788 NS! That's one way to describe him...Perfectly! Haha
They killed woodstock! Metallica, Korn, and many other greats all in one! No better way to end the century!
and millenium too!
WTF is Korn?
@@guydelusignan4272 🌽
@@guydelusignan4272 they invented nu metal pretty much

So ur last friend died? Sorry for u lost dude
That Bleeding Me performance though. What a great song.
Probably my favorite version. You can feel the emotion James is pouring into that performance. Just up there baring his frickin' soul to a bunch of drunk and high teenagers brave enough to stay to see them.
check out the performance from Plovdiv, Bulgaria '99. James is a beast during the song
57:02 James wants to play with Kirk but Kirk just ignores him and walks away. Oh no.
+cindercronkit Denied Lol
+cindercronkit I don't know if it's considered ignoring, it seemed like Kirk was unaware . hahaha
+cindercronkit
Looks more like James mating move.
Kirk gets in the zone and doesn't notice shit. 😂
Haha nah that was just drunk James being funny for the camera
the fact that they went after RATM and Limp Bizkit. the energy must’ve been surreal
Best band that went up on that stage that year
Only because Megadeth played in the other stage
Rage against the machine for me
@@labs3768 You may enjoy them more but they don’t have anywhere the level of creativity or breadth of Metallica!
@@TheGreatTomDix your opinion. Rage is way better live
Agree
45:20 thats how drum n bass works
There is SO MUCH going on between the members of the band as well as those folks' feelings into the crowd. Incredible.
im still here in 2019 ! never forgotten!
This has to be my favorite live era of Metallica, they played at their best.
I must've watched this 1000 times when i was like 13. Playing along woth my guitar each time driving my parents crazy. On DSL speed back in like 2003. When everyone had kazaa and practically gave my computer aids to watch this.
Man, ‘99 Tallica was the best. They really perfected their sound in this era. Would love to see an official video and/or audio release of this show.
Так это официальная версия , описание прочитай
THIS is my favorite Metallica era. Lars was so damn excellent on the drums, not to mention Jason's playing and backing vocals.
James was so fucking crazy until the 90's. So funny to watch this knowing how they are today.
+Mike Kiske No shit man!! He was such a fucking beast!!
+Mike Kiske
well, 16 yrs have gone bye...
+Mike Kiske He was an alcoholic back then, so I'm happy he is a little bit more normal right now.
yeah he was so powerful before Jason left and he was on rehabilitation :)
After Jason leaves the band and James rehab, a part of him died during the process
57:29 Lars completely freezes and doesn't remember to play the best drum fill in One
He's done it a lot in live performances. Though you could be right, I'm sure he was just lazy or didn't care about playing it. I've sadly watched too many of their concerts to know he's never played that part lol.
dude he was off the whole show. the dude sucks tbh
There’s no fill in that part anyway, listen to the original
@@___yaang___ there is a fill in that part of the original song but Lars never plays it at shows, so technically Lars can’t suck because he simply just doesn’t play the short fill
He never plays that fill live.
James in his prime after his "prime".
Looks so healthy and fairly happy haha! Nothing but love to these METAL legends.
30yr fan, RESPECT!!!!
They really need to work Bleeding Me back into their sets. Such a great fucking song.
1:03:00 Downpicking level - God!
Superpower!
Here I was 18, ribs bruised. Came only to see metallica. Made my way upfront during rage. Most forward pressure I've ever felt. Amazing. Glad I left right after this.
Wow, Bleeding Me was great.
Rastard12345 best version yet
One of the best versions of Seek and Destroy ever. Jason’s vocals are so badass!!
Listen to seek and destory in their live album new mexico
Here's this performance of Seek with HQ audio: ruclips.net/video/R61QqU6uQbM/видео.html
It is the best version of the song IMO.
I was 12yrs old watching on ppv. Most amazing thing ive ever seen on television still and probably allways will be.
Too bad this isn't actually the "Full Concert". After Seek there should be Creeping Death, Die Die My Darling, Enter Sandman, and and Battery.
So they played like 2 fucking hours or what?
the moment Jason started to sing seek&destroy I felt like every planet are in their places and everything in the universe is alright.
This would be the best live concert ive ever seen. Papa Het's voice was absolutely amazing. Its like listening to early 90s James combined with 2020 James. 💯💯❤️❤️❤️
have u seen metallica live?
I remember watching this shit on PPV back in the day. I begged my parents to order it for me so I could see Metallica's performance (as well as others...and I was only in High School at the time hence why I had to ask my parents lol). I may still have the VHS recording I did of it somewhere.
Lurch Murphy I called the PPV line for my cable company and hung up after only 3 rings. I was scared shitless because I went behind my mom's back. To my surprise, those three rings were enough to get PPV on my tv... oops!
Lurch Murphy ive done the same excrpt bh passed my parentd n ordered it with a click of a button n damn when mh dad recirved yhe bill oh was i in deep shit. haa.
@@123childcare what
I have it on Cassette still And watch it on PPV to
I got so lucky and the PPV channel came in for free for a few hours. I got to see the end of rage and this performance. Summer of 99! 🤘🤘
What a show this was. I was lucky to be there, and for 94’ too. I remember having to drag my passed out buddy from the concert grounds all the way to the tent after the show. Great times!
I actually saw the show before ‘94 Woodstock. It was in Pittsburgh, 8/12. My first show
just came out here because of the new Netflix's documentary about woodstock 99! when i saw that my metallica was there, i run to search if this video exists in youtube!
to bad i was born in 2000. this is pretty insane. if i could go back in time, i would go here. except maybe backstage so i wouldn't die in the savage crowd
ruclips.net/video/JcmylxQ0ma4/видео.html
Jaden Dubecky nobody died. 1 person in the entire 3 days died from a heart attack. Pits aren’t as bad as you’d think. As long as you don’t mind huge crowds and getting bruised up a little. And if you’re a man. A few sick fucks gang raped some women at this one ruined it for everyone.

Your social media generation is too soft no offense lol. We thrived for that!
I love watcing Kirk shred, he has a very unique stage presence. Id give anything to be able to travel back in time to attend this GOAT festival
Amazing performance and energy. Everyone sounds fantastic, especially James. His voice is gorgeous here, the precision is crazy. A true shame about all of the horrific stuff that happened that weekend.
1:08:59 The crews dedication for thrown objects is impeccable

late 90's Metallica is the GOAT live performance. Just insane!

1:00:55 my favorite moment. Reminds old good James
The force behind the motherfucker is so epic
So just watched the Woodstock 99 documentary on Netflix. They only really showed Korn and Limp Bizkit. Thought they would've showed Metallica because it would've been undoubted crazy as fuck
Also Rage Against the Machine played right before Metallica too
7:10 that guy behind james :P
The performance of turn the page makes me feel so sad. The band is pouring their hearts out in this song and everyone, Metallica and the crowd giving away every last ounce of energy. Unfortunately little did we know Jason had run out pretty much and the band just about there also. Such a pure Metallica just pure sentiment.
45:00 omg that bass... 👏💯❤
3:44 one song in and Lars looking like he just got out of the pool
Lmao
Bro it was 90+ degrees at 10 o’clock at night. Probably 110° underneath those lights. It was the HOTEST three fucking days I ever spent my whole life.. 🔥🔥 E V E R 🔥🔥
0:58:19 - Fight Fire With Fire nice shit

Has to be the sickest performance of For Whom the Bell Tolls..
Fucking hell, they slayed Fight Fire with Fire! Fast and heavy as everything instrumentally, and the vocals are absolutely outstanding too.
20 years ago today, I battled my way through the Limp Bizkit and RAtM crowds to get to the front of this one, and survived to tell the tale.
We both survived to tell the tale.
I tip my cap to you both. You fought the good fight.
As did i
this takes me back to one of the greatest nights of my life. Woodstock 99 get's so much shit but they never talk about how Metallica absolutely crushed it. This was an all timer...
METALLICA Is Always The Best Ever Who in This World Can Even Try Too Play For The Fans They're Always Just Like Family members of Mine Forever More
Mine Was in Magna Utah
Did you see creed too?
I went to '94 and remember listening to a live radio broadcast of '99. It was hot as balls that weekend in CT. Can't imagine what it was like there. But a drunken heat infested debacle is what being young is all about!
it was brutal. and being on a decommissioned air force base made it even worse. Baking on the run ways with no natural shade.
Maybe the rainsoaked mudbath of Woodstock 94 wasn't so bad by comparison. Oh well at least Metallica played at both!
