Hearing Jason play his bass breakdown, and then his guttural vocals throughout the last verse gives me goosebumps. Shame on J, K, & L for treating him so poorly. All hail Newsted! Cliff was the brain behind the brilliant writing of early 'Tallica, but Jason was, and is the battery and lifeblood of Metallica.
Jason sucks in bass playing technique but his stage appearance covers it all up... Only in Metal music though, pity he quit with his Newsted band. In his new mellow project he doesn't really shine...
@@Godshand2 In no way does he suck, he plays the songs no problemo. But his presence and his vocals are what matters the most. To me he will always be Metallica. The best bassist they ever had.
InMyChickens Yeah. Like, I don't hate Lars, but the other songs at this concert felt very loose because of him, but this one is very tight and energetic.
Is it just me, or did Metallica play faster when Jason played? And especially Kirk at 4:36 when he starts his solo, it seemed faster and more energetic, like he was excited and fired up to have Jason in the line up, right???
Gerald Burgos Jason was always the heart of the soul of the band, he was the guy who kept the band from imploding they hazed him but they were together.
One of the main reasons why Metallica made it that big was because of their live shows and Jason was a BIG part of that. He had that extra ENERGY that Cliff and Rob didn't have. Probably because Cliff and Rob are on the virtuoso side while Jason was more of a rhytm player. He has a powerful playing style that really complimented Hetfield and Metallica in general.
James Hetfield - Rythim guitar and vocals Kirk Hammett - Lead guitar A lost gorilla with a lot of skill - Bass Still Satan - Bass and vocals Dani Devito - Drums
We're lucky to have had Burton, Newstead and Trujillo! However, The Newstead lineup was the Metallica I grew up with and rocked out to in my bedroom. Seeing this, makes me very happy :)
@@jackbauer1818 Cliff WAS Metallica, James Lars Kirk have said that themselves. Cliff taught them music theory, and introduced them to Classical music influences that they morphed into melodic pieces within their furious thrash. He played bass like a lead guitarist, in fact Kirk has recalled how offstage Cliff mostly played guitar. Cliff's impact on his bandmates (including Dave Mustaine) cannot be understated. Yes his myth and mystique have grown in the decades since his untimely passing, but I can guarantee anyone who grew up with Cliff's (and even Jason's) era will testify Cliff was integral to that band. The fact that he was only in the band for three years and his memory is still revered today is evidence of his importance to early Metallica and well beyond.
It's not the skills as much as it's that vibe he brings... Jason pushes the band and causes the friction that makes it electric.... To me it's what fans react to and Jason brings the Heaviness in vocals too.
Thank you. Jason's groove and aggression is what makes him such a perfect fit for Metallica. Metallica was never about their skill. Lars and Kirk, for all intents and purposes, aren't the best at their instruments. Cliff and James are the most talented members of the bands, and they weren't really virtuosos. But they all had the aggression and the drive. Jason's groove, aggression, and drive is what made him a perfect fit for Metallica. He wasn't a shredder bassist, but goddamn if he didn't have a strong sense of groove, an extremely aggressive style, and extremely tight with his playing. Rob has the skill, but he has the wrong kind of groove. He's more of a funk bassist. He lacks the aggression Cliff and Jason had. Like most people I accepted he isn't in the band anymore, but I've always missed Jason in the band. He was, in many ways, the perfect replacement for Cliff.
Oh and top of that, Jason's backing vocals and occasional lead vocals were fucking MEAN. His vocals could be more aggressive and vicious than James'. Have you hear Rob's backing vocals? Eeeeww.
I like Rob don't get me wrong, but goddamnit when Jason Newstead hits the stage, that to me is THE true Metallica! So much energy and makes them all play better. We miss you badly Jason. And I am sure that all of us who really knows Metallica lovea you man.
Rob's probably a good bit better than Jason on a technical level, but Jason had a really intimidating intensity about him. He was an evangelist for the band. Like, anybody who ever said Metallica sucked, I think Jason would have wanted to go find them and set them straight. He knew how lucky he was to be in the band and it seemed like he never took it all for granted, like he wanted to prove his worth every time he performed with the band. It's like Rob had the technicals and Jason had the personality. If you could have chimera'd them together, you'd basically have another Cliff.
@@mvieyra1332 Iron Maiden also have 3 guitar players, and it's awesome. I think we should have, even if it's just for an album, 3 guitars (James, Kirk and Dave Mustaine, who composed but never effectively played in a Metallica album) and 2 basses (Rob and Jason). It would be even greater if it had 2 discs, one with new songs and other with new recordings for old songs, and maybe even a tribute to Cliff. But I know it's just a dream that (probably) will never happen.
LOL at 6:05 Rob: die...die...die...die... Jason: DIE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIIEE MOTHERFUCKER DIIEE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIE!! DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!!! Rob got outta there after that aha. Backup vocals belong to Jason.
You know something, Rob took a page out of Jason's book and started to use the "Mother Fucker" part a whole lot more after this. Pretty damn cool dude!
Well the Bass-sound on that album is Lars fault, no one else, there was an interview with the producer of the album about this a while back. All Jason ever did was laying down his basslines and then going back on tour. here's the interview btw: /watch?v=lmFgeFh2nlw
you guys are all totally missing what his comment is - James doesn't like to feel low end on stage and that's all is meant by the comment. it's the exact reason that there aren't subwoofers on the floor at metallica shows anymore and they're all hung in the air. James cant stand having the stage shake all the time and because this stage is so small with the bass amps up there that was the joke Robert was making.
@jonny j I completely agree. It's a pity that Jason was sacrificed but that AJFA sound is for me Metallica at it's most exciting, as much as I love the thrashers on Master and Ride the Lightning. AJFA was a friend in a dark and friendless time in a middle school where it was social death to be a metalhead.
I saw that interview. Dave still respects James. He created Megadeth and all but he never really left Metallica in his mind. You could see it in his eyes. :/
James wants to do stuff with Dave. Dave tweeted several days ago that about two years ago James contacted him about doing a whole No Life Till’ Leather official demo release with like, 27 songs and pictures and all kinds of cool shit, but fucking Lars want credit on two of the songs that Dave wrote every note and word to so Dave passed on it and they stopped talking about it.
Even though Rob has been in Metallica for 12 years I still feel like Jason is the main bass player. His charisma, his presence, his likeable personality fit Metallica a lot better than Rob's.
Maybe they just want a emotional exit? Cause you know Cliff… They really shouldn't do that, but people make mistakes from time to time, even if you're the biggest fuckin band in the world.
+Chris J Because James was immature. James pushed Jason out of the band. The entire blame goes to Jason for his inability to deal with mature situations in his life. Metallica being his entire life. James was a terrible person. He was mean to his bass player, he was mean, to Kirk, he was mean to Lars and he treated his family poorly. Just look at the movie and you will see that James missed his own childs b-day so he could go hunting. WEAK
+Javy C Yeah at that time james was a REALLY bad person with everyone around him. Jason left because he was being incredible mean with him and was immature too (like you said). That was why james had to go to rehab because he was being a horrible person (and was the best thing he could have ever done)
Spooder-Not sure about you but when I watch Some Kind Of Monster, I really cringe at the scenes where James is being so mean to his band members(pre rehab). He really was a bad person and he chased Jason out of the band. Oh well. Things happen for a reason
Considering what a big Metallica fan Jason was before joining, it had to be an homage to Cliff in way. It uses most of the same notes as the intro for Anesthesia only with descending notes instead of ascending.
@@alexcunningham4847 indeed. Rob thought for a second he was pointing at him, but it was Zach he was going after. Forgot he was on stage right with his bass on the ready.
When Jason left a lot of the energy and most notably the backing vocals, left with him. Rob is an excellent musician, and I'm not taking anything away from him. Without him, there would probably be no "All Nightmare Long" which is one of my favorite Metallica songs, even including all of their old stuff too. He brings a lot of character to the band in his own way, and dogging him is not the point of this comment, but there's just something extra special about when Jason is on the stage. jason had the IT factor for this band... rob is just more technical.
Rob B. I like Jason better because he brings a fire to this day that the rest of the band doesn't have, they lack any of that hatred that Metallica was famous, they're still angry, it's just not the same
I honestly think Rob is just shy and doesnt give his all.
Nestor Ramirez Rob is great and an awesome awesome player... but its about fit... jason fits metallica... rob fits korn, deftones, rage against the machine, lamb of god, suicidal etc... all different styles.
Cliff= The father
Rob= The son
Jason= The holy spirit
Rob holy spirt? Nah.. Would be happy if rob left and Jason Come back

Hearing Jason play his bass breakdown, and then his guttural vocals throughout the last verse gives me goosebumps. Shame on J, K, & L for treating him so poorly. All hail Newsted! Cliff was the brain behind the brilliant writing of early 'Tallica, but Jason was, and is the battery and lifeblood of Metallica.
kirk was never bad to him
@@Loner_Kun he said in an interview that they all treated Jason badly because of what happened to cliff
Kirk way of treating badly he didn't pass the suga coke
The Battery of Metallica? I see what you did there.
Kirk was good to him notice how he hugged him
dude Jason is just so intense and puts Metallica back in the zone.
It is scary the amount of presence and fire he brings
Jason fits better on many levels. It's not just about the playing, but the whole package.
Hardwired showed us how great Rob really is
Jason sucks in bass playing technique but his stage appearance covers it all up...

+stinkydo0d Maybe losing another brother made him lose the will the keep trying as hard
Jason86906 Maybe.
+stinkydo0d dude, I thought the exact same thing. I also kind of see James more "confident" with Jason backing vocals.

Man, those vocals of Jason are pure gold. He had such a strong stage presence.

No fuck no cliff is fucking Metallica
@@fucallofyoufr Cliff is dead and has been for 33 years. Yeah it's sad but for once stop bringing him up everywhere. Cliff was not metallica.
@@jackbauer1818
Cliff WAS Metallica, James Lars Kirk have said that themselves.
Newstand era is the real metallica era..
The energy that Jason brings to Metallica is unparalleled....
5:45 Why can’t Metallica have two bass players? Jason and Rob sound incredible together! Plus I want Jason’s vocals back!
Because it looks ridicules.
Lars and James' ego doesn't allow it
It looks flipping awesome...
They should hire Jason back for their last tour. That would be so sick to see. Would pay 3x the amount for a ticket to see Jason😁
@@XXLRebel3x the amount? No thanks already paid $402 for GA tickets no way would I pay $1,206 because freakin Jason is playing
It's not the skills as much as it's that vibe he brings... Jason pushes the band and causes the friction that makes it electric.... To me it's what fans react to and Jason brings the Heaviness in vocals too.
Well said
Eeeeww.
+Blu Lars not talented? i let you know he was elected best drum player for years....
A lot of lists also consider Kurt Cobain one of the best guitarists in the world.
Newsted sounds like a drill sergeant... his backing vocals were and always will be fucking legendary. He should rejoin Metallica.
Wrong. Metallica should join him.
I like Rob don't get me wrong, but goddamnit when Jason Newstead hits the stage, that to me is THE true Metallica! So much energy and makes them all play better. We miss you badly Jason. And I am sure that all of us who really knows Metallica lovea you man.
For sure! Well said Chris McCoy
A true statement indeed!!!
@@brianm2881Jason’s vocals are absolutely killer as well. He’s more metal than any other player on stage
All respect to Rob, but Jason makes Metallica better.
My opinion is different... WHY NOT BOTH?
I mean if Foo Fighters can have 3 guitar players I'm sure Metallica can have 2 bass players.

"i like low end when it's somewhere else." definition of AJFA
Henry My thoughts exactly.
Look at what Jason does when he gets on stage. Walks past James, fist bumps rob, hugs Kirk. I can’t imagine how Kirk felt when Jason left.
You know Barack, even 20 years after Jason left the band, we still all miss him terribly.

Creeping death will never be the same without Jason. Btw love how the crowd reacts to him appearing
Fuck it, this 2017 let´s ask Metallica to bring back Jason a Mustaine, fuck it all!!! 3 guitar players and 2 bass players!!
Dave Mustaine wanted to write some material in 2012 with James but James refused.
reading that interview I kind of feel sorry for dave. looks like he still misses metallica.
No please. JASON YES. DAVE NO.
What a great live performance of Creeping Death, seeing Jason and Rob share the stage is just awesome two truly humble musicians .
I agree they just enjoy the music and of them is the goog bassist
Jason is very underrated. They made a lot of great music with him as the bassist.
Even though Rob has been in Metallica for 12 years I still feel like Jason is the main bass player. His charisma, his presence, his likeable personality fit Metallica a lot better than Rob's.
Only Rob looks like a guest on this video. Jason has the style of Metallica
Yes he fukin does bro that's my point exactly!!
Why did they have to treat Jason like shit. He is the best.
+Chris J I think they had so many problems, they just took it out on jason. It's a shame, but they are more developed now
Maybe they just want a emotional exit? Cause you know Cliff…
They really shouldn't do that, but people make mistakes from time to time, even if you're the biggest fuckin band in the world.
Jason is the perfect bassist for the band, like no other
My friend misery is still one of the most beautiful bass grooves ever written
One of my favorite Metallica songs!
Considering what a big Metallica fan Jason was before joining, it had to be an homage to Cliff in way. It uses most of the same notes as the intro for Anesthesia only with descending notes instead of ascending.

Rob is a class act
metallica without jason is like a car without tires
When Jason left a lot of the energy and most notably the backing vocals, left with him. Rob is an excellent musician, and I'm not taking anything away from him. Without him, there would probably be no "All Nightmare Long" which is one of my favorite Metallica songs, even including all of their old stuff too. He brings a lot of character to the band in his own way, and dogging him is not the point of this comment, but there's just something extra special about when Jason is on the stage. He elevates the whole group.
Well said.
