      Jason was easily the most likable and relatable person in Metallica. He started as a fan and I think his genuine love for the band and his passion for music just oozed from him and he was such a force with this band. I miss his backing vocals, the “die mother fucker die” chant of his cannot be topped

    The fact that they treated him like trash just because "you're not as good as our dead friend" is unforgivable. I often wonder how Cliff would react if he knew his replacement was treated like literal garbage because his friends couldn't handle his death.

    • @drphalanges1520
      @drphalanges1520 2 года назад +607

      Exactly my thoughts. He was every bit as good as Cliff was in his own way and he fit in the band so well. And on stage you would never know how they treated him because he always brought his best. It's a damn shame that they did that to him.

    • @itsalwayssomething7490
      @itsalwayssomething7490 2 года назад +257

      I don't think they treated him like garbage. That's an exaggeration and you definently don't get that vibe when seeing them interact. In the beginning, they hazed him, maybe at times a little too hard. But, Jason was still given lots of freedom to do what he did in the live shows, including vocals. If they thought less of him, I don't see James and Lars giving Jason that opportunity. They knew Jason gave his all and respected him for it, despite him not being Cliff. He also was allowed to speak on Metallica's behalf constantly in interviews. He wasn't just the quiet one in the corner being told to shut up.
      During the time Jason was unhappy and wanted to do side project, James was disrespectful. James was in a dark place and Jason received some of his vitriol, because James felt he was losing control. He put Jason in between a rock and a hard place, and that's the disrespect. He stunted Jason by keeping him hostage in an unfulfilling situation. It's like sitting in a Lamborghini, but you're told you cannot drive it.
      But, Jason never gave any indication outside of a few times that he was mistreated. Did the other guys give Jason the same respect they gave Cliff, or what they give Robert? No. But, he wasn't mistreated the whole time. He just wasn't seen as having equal standing in the band. They should have fought harder to make him happy.
      At the same time, him leaving made them reevaluate who they were as people, as a band, and it probably prolonged their careers.

    • @GiveSic
      @GiveSic 2 года назад +390

      @@itsalwayssomething7490 All the things you just listed are all perfect example of him being treated like garbage. Lars and James fully admit to hazing him the whole time he was in the band. James literally says "It was the three of us.... And Jason" if that's not mistreatment of your fellow band member I really don't know what is. They might be cool now and Jason might have been to chill of a dude to call them on their bullshit at the time (he was their biggest fan and joining Metallica was the chance of a lifetime for him so why would he try to trash talk his heroes?) But that doesn't mean they didn't treat him like shit.

    I've seen Metallica three times. I saw them in 1994 when I was 11, in 2000 when I was 17 and in 2004 when I was 21. The first time was special because my older brother had just come home for furlough after finishing boot camp for the Navy and he had bought the tickets even before he left for training so it was something that we were both looking really forward to. Also it was my first heavy metal concert. So what a way to start. In 2000 when I was 17 I saw them in Dallas and I took my girlfriend who is now my wife. I was older and had a much better knowledge and appreciation of the music then and naturally loved it because Jason was there singing his balls off on every freaking song it seemed like on the summer sanitarium tour with Kid Rock and corn opening I believe. In 2004 my wife and I saw them in Oklahoma City and I mean no disrespect to Rob as he is a fantastic bass player. It feels like they just didn't have the same punch live without Jason. I did not think I would notice Jason's absence as much as I did until I was there and I was like wow the band is really just kind of going through the motions. Metallica this day is my favorite band but I have not seen them in concert in 18 years and I don't expect I ever will again unless it's some sort of a special show where Jason Plays with them as a five-piece.

I never thought that that energy was only reserved for the frontman or the 'star' of the show and I grabbed every ounce of it that I could and tried to give it back. Man, Jason gave back so much energy and while I think Rob is (arguably) the most talented musician who's ever played bass for Metallica (don't wind up: Cliff's full potential was sadly never realized) Jason brought something else entirely to the live experience. They were fools for not appreciating his input because obviously then it wouldn't have been the James & Lars show, but it would have been magnificent if more of Jason's creativity had been allowed to express itself within the band.
