When I was first getting into photography years ago I found this man's RUclips channel and I bought what I could on the used market on his recommendations and I can honestly say I was extremely happy with every single purchase I made and I value this man's opinion extremely high in the world of photography I love my Nikon I love my vintage lenses that cost next to nothing still using a DSLR in 2024 and could😅n't be happier
Story time...I am a Truck Driver...been shooting for over 20+ years with Nikon bodies...picked up the D500 2 years and ago and fell head over heels in love! That camera is just AWESOME! Well built with all the features a pure shooter could ever want and then some...but it’s not a FX body and it’s time to step up to the big leagues and plus I need something a bit more robust due to my Sasquatch sized hands! So, I pick up a D4S and BOOM! Lust meets Love! My photos take on a new soulful look and feel...plus it’s built like a damn tank! I love them both and they are the reasons as to why I will KEEP shooting with DSLR bodies (as long as Nikon keeps making them like those 2) My D4S took flight within my tractor last week after I had to do some hard breaking...the only damage was a tear in the rubber eye cup and nothing else...LIKE A TANK! Give me D850 in a D5 body and I wouldn’t need another camera body EVER.
One of my personal favourite cameras is the Nikon D3S which I still use among other cameras. I cannot find a specific video on the D3S. Have you ever done one? Or would you ever consider doing one in 2020?
Hello, thanks for all your advices! I have a good old D700 and a D4 camera, very happy with both and not looking for any upgrade. But I'm curious... Isn't the dynamic range on D850 much higher than on the D4? According to DxOmark yes, but can I have your feeling about this ? Many thanks!
As far as other manufacturers concerned I add the Kodak DCS6xx/7xx series (the one and only 35mm DSLR camera system out there based on the Nikon F5), the Hasselblad H3D-II series and the Leica M8 original (fastest shutter on any rangefinder camera) to the bunch of legendary camera bodies. All of these were gamechangers and still are strong pieces of equipment.
Exactly. I picked up a D3x (used) in August of 2015 for the extra megapixels for birding so's I could crop. Was not happy with it. Sold it (and a D7100) five months later to pay for a new D500+grip from B+H. Much happier. Still have the D500.
D3 is an absolute tank, just bought a D3s to replace it as a camera retailer here in the UK decided to have a pre-Christmas sale and dropped 20% off their "clearance" items, so got a 47k shots D3s for £520 ($660). An absolute steal! My D3 has been the acomplus for my D800 for the last 7 months and it's been great but isn't the best example, she's a bit battered mind you, but has plenty of life left with a measly 190k on the clock. Just find the low-light on the D3 lacking a bit so thought why not? Must argue the D800 as the best bang for the buck, mine was £430 with 90k and found another recently for £420 with 78k. A steal, considering the resolution, pro layout, pretty snappy AF and respectable low-light capabilities.
hi, Ken.I have d850 and d750, watching ur videos make me wonder how it feels to have one more d4s. Is it a good bargain to have a new d4s with 1k5 dollars in 2022? Thx a lot!😂
Hi greetings from the UK,I enjoy watching your videos have been a Nikon user for decades with the original F F2,F3,F4 F3 being my all time 35mm SLR.....I currently have a D800 with about 21000 clicks on it,love it but 4fps is not enough so I picked up a mint D4 with only 3,156 clicks for £780 or $982 yesterday can't wait to fire that shutter at 10 fps! keep the videos coming.
Ken, I have a D3s which I love. It is real work horse. How ever, I am thinking about switching to a D4 or even a D4s. Would you recommend the change - if I find one on a good price/condition level?
I spent hours shooting with fellow photographers with a D4vand a D500 at a low light soccer game. We were all surprised to see how much better the high iso performance was compared to the D500. The D4 files at iso 10k were far better than D500 at 5k In fact we noticed considerable noise at 3k in the D500.
Exactly. I've purchased and returned almost all of the newer Nikons (D810, D850, Z6 and even Z50!) and still prefer the D800. Once I learned how to download custom picture controls, I was able to tune the perfect in-camera color (Fuji Film Velvia) without even having to make any color/shadow adjustment in any software later. And the button layout is still the very best. :)
I upgraded from a d3400 a month ago. Almost got a d7500, then found a way to get a new d500 for a little over $1k. Very happy I followed your recommendation!!!!
Hi I enjoy a lot your videos and the vast knowledge that you share on them. As a Nikon D500 user for several years With more then enough FX glass for it I was wondering in your expert opinion which camera would you recommend between D500,D850 and Z7 for a overall good enough camera. I have no complains about my D500 but I was thinking about upgrade to a full sensor since everybody claims that a full sensor as the one in D850 and Z7 are better and with more megapixels. Can you please recommend me one of the three since I like Nikon and you are a Nikon expert. Thanks so much
First off thank you for the recommendation of the Nikon D500. I am looking at the D3S as my second camera. What do you think about the D3S as a second camera?
Hi: Ken never recommended buying a D3x, he did not offer any detailed explanation why not. I bought one $800 with 47K shutter counts about two years ago. Since I am not a pro so your purpose of getting one might be different. So far I really enjoy using it mainly for landscape and family photos.
Main difference between the D3 and D3s as well as the D4 and D4s is processing speed and video. The D3 didn't have video, that was later added to the D3s. The D4 is a great camera, but needed a speed boost to the auto-focus, which was accomplished by going to the Expeed 4 processor in the D4s. Also the D4s added 60 fps to the 1080p video over the D4 only having 30fps. If you're not a video shooter, any of the Nikon older professional cameras are work horses and well worth the money.
D850s are still constantly backordered but it seems the wait time is a lot shorter now. Hunt's actually had some in stock last week but they didn't last long. It seems you can get your hands on one in a couple of weeks now.
I agree with your thought on the Legendary D3/D4 however regarding the D500 and D850, as a pro wildlife photographer the D850 is the superior camera (If you have the glass for it) the slower FPS is a problem for some, but the AF is so good that as long as you know how to pick the right moment for a shot the 7FPS or 9 with the grip and D5 batteries will easily cope. The higher MP is gorgeous and the RAW files are superior meaning if ultimate quality is what you're after then the D850 wins and having used it for solid months in the field, working in the rainforest, UK and overseas on multiple assignments its the first camera I'll always add to the bag. For most people however the D500 is bloody awesome (price/performance) and the savings on the camera over the D850 allows for the purchase of some excellent lenses to pair with it, and of course as we all know lenses are key, that any camera with poor optics is never going to perform to the standards we are after. Cheers, Tom
I never had an issue with the FPS with sports/editorial, as a friend who shoots wildlife. I found turning off preview on all my Nikon DSLRs has helped with the FPS with the battery pack, EN-18C battery
Recently grabbed a minty Nikon D4s with 200k clicks for 500 British pounds! I’m prepared to have it fixed in the future if possible :) it has been a dream camera I never imagined to own!! So far it’s been amazing! ticks everything I want in a camera
Which one is better?? Fuji xt2 Or Nikon D800?? I want to use it for landscape, and portrait. And i want to take astrophotography in the future. :) Im looking for nikon d3S because its really good in low light, but its really hard to find used one that have under 50,000 or even 75000 shutter clicks.
Hey Ken, I got a D610 earlier this year at a steal, should I upgrade or work with what I have? I also bought the Tamron 35mm and 24-70mm G2 lenses based off your review. I love them both.
courtney wright It depends on your needs. The D610 sensor and file size are fantastic, and although it's not ideal I've even used it for sports. For weddings, portraits, products, landscapes, etc. it's a fine choice. If it works for your needs you should continue to use and enjoy it.
Owning a d610 as well as a d850 I think I am qualified to give my 2 cents: The D610 produces very good pictures, has an ok AF system and does most of the stuff well. The d850 has much faster autofocus which really becomes apparent with lenses such as the Tamron 70-200g2. The image quality is another level above the d610 / you can crop away 90% of he picture and will still see decent results. However the best part about the d850 is that the pictures come out of the camera so well that there’s hardly any post processing needed (at least from the pictures I took so far) so if you are earning money with the camera I would definitely consider the expense / same for nature / wildlife and sport photography. If you do portraits / street / travel mostly then maybe not Hope it helps
Looking to get a D3s for some events that I will be shooting in the future, most of those images are for instagram and Facebook pages so for the time being I might pick the good old D700. Think that will be plenty :)
Ken, you're costing me a lot of money the last couple of years! I've had my D850 for 4 days. Trying to get a feel for when I want to shoot it vs. the D500 and which lens should be attached to it vs. the D500. Loving it so far. But I'm trying to keep from using it as my "action" camera. Today, I just received my Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton. Can't wait to learn how to use it.
I'm making a serious attempt at tweaking my picture controls on my D7100 and D7200 cameras for JPG plus lightroom profiles for RAW because I don't want to spend a ton of money on new gear just at the moment and everything coming out right now has some kind of flaw.
I truely think the D500 is an insane camera, I don’t own it but I own a D7200 which is a lovely camera and the D500 is pretty much the perfected version of the D7200. I just love how the D500 has all the technology and image quality you’ll ever need in a APS-C DSLR. The only sad thing is that it has bad liveview autofocus but that’s the only bad thing I could think of
Hey, Ken, I've been watching your channel for years, and I know, you know almost everything about Nikon cameras. So, here is my situation!: I want to buy a new DSLR, and I have cca 1300$ for the body. I dont have professional glasses for Nikon, because I've been working with Canon in recent years. I usually shoot hockey and demonstrations (some photojournalistic jobs, you can see this in my account), and I want to have a professional Nikon body. But I dont know which is better for me: the D3S (with 28-70&80-200) or the D500 (with 17-55&80-200). Should I go to FF, or can I stay in DX for professional jobs? Thanks for your answer!
Is the D3s still worth buying today? As a way into FX without having to spend thousands on body alone. Currently have a D7200, would like a FX but in truth don't have an endless budget for body and won't need a huge amount of glass.
Btw, can't find any tech articles on what actually made the D3S such a low light beast. They must have pulled out all the stops with regard to the SNR firmware.
I was saving up for the D500 but lost my job after 18 years there. Sucks. I do have the D7100 I bought used (7,200 shutter clicks) on craigslist (really nice guy sold it to me cheap) just before losing my job and I love it especially after Angry P's videos touting the D7100 as a good Dx camera. I'm teaching myself photography via RUclips since its such a great hobby now that I'm unemployed. RUclips also has quite a few short, simple, yet effective videos by people who take the time to properly explain digital photography in plain english. Angry Photographer has given good advice on what lenses to purchase and i have taken his advice on several of them; 60mm f2.8D, 70-300mm G VR, 85mm f1.8D, 35mm f1.8G DX. I would like to get the Tokina 100mm f2.8. My photography has improved and am working more thoughtfully on developing that eye on how to frame out a picture thru the viewfinder and lens and learn how to properly understand and execute the exposure triangle. Now, learning about mastering light is a tricky mother.... Bought my first film camera, a Nikon N2020 in 1987, then went on to buy a used Nikon 8008S in 1993. As time went on, I realized I really sucked at photography and gave up. I still have those cameras... in mint condition, yikes! In 2018, i picked up the hobby anew and slowly but steadily working on taking better pictures. Photography was always something that interested me and now more than ever, I am patiently trying to live by this saying- " Nothing is gained without practice".
The d500 with 24mp ff will be a nice camera if nikon will make it... D850 is really nice but 46mp is too much... 24mp is a sweet spot... The d780 is a big NO..
I’ve bought several legacy glass with your recommendation and even my D500. I shoot landscapes 90% of the time but have always wanted to shoot portraits and considered the voigtlander 55mm and the 60mm Nikon micro 2.8 that you’ve talked about. Shamefully... I’m after bokeh! Which do you feel would be the best over all portrait lens for a crop sensor with this target in mind or should I shop for a full frame camera?
All my DLSRs have always been Canons (40D, 7D, 5D, 70D), but here we are in 2024, and I'm about to pull the trigger on a Nikon D40X for its wonderfully "old school" CCD sensor and its lack of video capability and a self-focus motor. The more I learn about taking pictures, the simpler I want my camera to be.
Used to have a minty D3S, miss that camera. Only thing I didn't like was the totally different color output compared to my D700. Had to process the RAWs very differently. High ISOs were epic though.
Mark Pitsilos what does that Meaning I have shot with the D 700 using an old 3572.8 and I love the color saturation I am considering buying a D3 S and I have not use that camera but what does the output difference that you and the video maker talk about
Absolutely love my D500. I find myself using more and more as my main camera. If I just take one camera and a lens I grab the D500 and AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.
i have the d700 and d3, dammit i just saw a d3X for a reasonable price. still recommend for landscapes and portraits today? maybe a little wildlife too while landscaping
thanks, just checked locally and you were spot on! im a sports shooter but i think 7 FPS in crop mode would do me fine in that sector, FF mode for landscape and big print job if any. 12 mp do me just fine for mags
You know why I like this guy, because he doesn’t lie or mislead like some of the fuckers on here so just to get free perks for themselves... he says it like it is. Add to that he has a very high intelligence.. he’s got my vote !!! I’m going for the D3s or D4 myself. Screw the 500
Upgrading to the D500 pretty soon. Getting it from Roberts Camera on your recommendation. Already bought a tripod from them and they are great to deal with.
Love the video! Great content and information. I am saving for a Nikon D4s. I like how you did the snap at the end of the video and said "Peace out Girl Scout"
Awesome comparison between the D500 & Sugar gliders. I own & love the d500 (partly because of your videos). Use to breed sugar gliders, cool little creatures.
Hello Ken, I have an opportunity to purchase a D3s with about 55k shutter clicks for less than $1k canadian. This will be a forth body that I want to use for remotes or other shoots where the client wants max 4mb jpeg files that I dont need to edit. I think this is the perfect body, would you agree?
I have owned all except the D850. All amazing. Why wouldn’t you put the A9 into legendary? What is the fault of that body? I’m happy with the XT3 but just wondering why most would consider the A9 as a better body... thanks Ken.
@@tothemoon2151 But you are correct. D850 would be fantastic and right up my alley. The reason I have owned so many is trying to find the "perfect" camera in the 1500-2000 dollar price range. For me, there were too many issues with the other cameras, lack of video, or poor crop-ability since I cannot afford the "premier glass" So I finally went the Fuji route since I need great image quality, great autofocus for action, great video, focus peaking because I love using manual lenses, compact and easy for even my wife to use for the occasional videos she makes for marketing. D500 hit almost all of those marks minus the video features and ease of use for my wife. XT3 is probably the best all around camera I can even think of, glad I got it.

Good quality glass matters most than any camera. And it is usually more expensive than the body itself.
Awesome video! Just recently became a fan of D3/D3s and own them after 13 years of not being able to afford them. :) They're amazing.
The best purchase that I ever made was my D4s. 16MP, full frame, built like a tank and a joy to shoot and carry.
Legendary Nikon DSLRs:
D500
D850
D3S
D4
Otokichi786 I'd add D700.
You forgot the D700.
D700 is amazing, but its not "legendary" by all criterion i can judge by
D7200
I still have the D850 and D3s. Used to have the D4 and the D500, and I miss them. All fine cameras.

I actually really like my D3X. 10 years old now. Got it used for £1k. Colours are golden!
they just pushed teh D3X too far in its build, ...$1000 euros? cheap!!!!

Im looking for nikon d3S because its really good in low light, but its really hard to find used one that have under 50,000 or even 75000 shutter clicks.
for landscape the D800
@@KenTheoriaApophasis for everything Nikon is superior
Have you ever tried m42 lenses on Nikon body? Don't faint on this question.
yes, some work, others hit the mirror
Hey Ken, I got a D610 earlier this year at a steal, should I upgrade or work with what I have? I also bought the Tamron 35mm and 24-70mm G2 lenses based off your review. I love them both.
courtney wright It depends on your needs. The D610 sensor and file size are fantastic, and although it's not ideal I've even used it for sports. For weddings, portraits, products, landscapes, etc. it's a fine choice. If it works for your needs you should continue to use and enjoy it.
Owning a d610 as well as a d850 I think I am qualified to give my 2 cents:
The D610 produces very good pictures, has an ok AF system and does most of the stuff well. If you do portraits / street / travel mostly then maybe not
Hope it helps
Looking to get a D3s for some events that I will be shooting in the future, most of those images are for instagram and Facebook pages so for the time being I might pick the good old D700. Think that will be plenty :)
Never had any of the big bodies but the 850 is my fav camera of all time, so far.
Nikon D3x or Nikon d4 ?
nikon d4
Ken, just found a D3 with 2500 clicks...$600!! Love your vids!! Thx
Hey Ken! Thanks for tour videos!! I want to know what’s your opinion on buying a d810 with 120K shots for 950 USD?
Ken, you're costing me a lot of money the last couple of years!
I've had my D850 for 4 days. Trying to get a feel for when I want to shoot it vs. the D500 and which lens should be attached to it vs. the D500. Loving it so far. But I'm trying to keep from using it as my "action" camera. Today, I just received my Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton. Can't wait to learn how to use it.
Interested to know your opinion on the Voigtlander 58mm. What do you think after using it for some time?
Just picked up a 2005 D2X today on FB marketplace for $120. Can’t wait to play around with it.
One little question i have is..
does the df has same dynamic range as the D4? (comparing only between their output files)
Did you ever pickup the z50?
buy it no, pick it up yes
I'm making a serious attempt at tweaking my picture controls on my D7100 and D7200 cameras for JPG plus lightroom profiles for RAW because I don't want to spend a ton of money on new gear just at the moment and everything coming out right now has some kind of flaw.
D700 is up there for sure
That table looks like Nikon pro service....
Which camera you think had the best ccd sensor d50 d60 d200 or another model
hehehe, none of those
@@KenTheoriaApophasis so which you think if I want a ccd sensor with moderate budget. Stay safe
@@KenTheoriaApophasis your right the d80 was the one I ended up with.
Hi Ken, I saw online a used Nikon D4S with about 5,000 shots at a price of €3,000 ($3,400). Do you think that it’s a good deal?
# L E G E N D A R Y
thanks Ken for all your honest reviews and judgement.
my D3s still rocks like a vintage Lamborghini!
I had no trouble getting my D850. It said back ordered, but it shipped that day.
I love the fire on the mac. Makes me feel like I’m about to watch Owl Theatre
I truely think the D500 is an insane camera, I don’t own it but I own a D7200 which is a lovely camera and the D500 is pretty much the perfected version of the D7200. I just love how the D500 has all the technology and image quality you’ll ever need in a APS-C DSLR. The only sad thing is that it has bad liveview autofocus but that’s the only bad thing I could think of
Agreed. Liveview isn't that great, but it's such a fantastic camera.
Which one is more versatile, D500 or xt-3?
D4 or D850 in high iso shots which would you prefer?
Hey, Ken,
I've been watching your channel for years, and I know, you know almost everything about Nikon cameras. Thanks for your answer!
what is with nikon p900, so compact and such magnification.
Very informative one! Ken, what's your opinion about D700 in 2020?
Sold D810 but kept my D3 and 2xD700 and D800 but sadly they don't get anything like the use my Fujifilm X cameras do these days 🙁
I own the d500 on your recommendation and I love it. Currently saving for the d850 😊
The d500 is a crop sensor beast!
i want to buy nikon fx model which one to buy??
Nikon D800 is not here, and I'm glad.
Still waiting on the D3X video. :)
Which do you feel would be the best over all portrait lens for a crop sensor with this target in mind or should I shop for a full frame camera?
you dont need a FF for that....Voigtlander 58mm 1.4. used for about $400
Theoria Apophasis I don’t know if enough of us thank you but, sincerely, thank you for all that you do!
Bokeh shame is super unnecessary
Lol!! I still use my Legendary D2x for beating the street trail!!
Love my D500, Thanks Ken for the recommendation!!!
Love D810
Is the 850 a massive jump from the d810? Considering if I should make the investment.
in general yes it is,....for image output, kinda, ehh
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Appreciate it thank you. I value your opinion and videos 💪🏾.
Can someone tell me if the D4 image quality will be roughly the same as a D750?
I can't
i have the d700 and d3, dammit i just saw a d3X for a reasonable price. still recommend for landscapes and portraits today? maybe a little wildlife too while landscaping
Wani Media Don't bother with the quirky D3X when used D810's can be found for around $1200.
thanks, just checked locally and you were spot on! im a sports shooter but i think 7 FPS in crop mode would do me fine in that sector, FF mode for landscape and big print job if any. 12 mp do me just fine for mags
Where does D810 stand?
I just bought my d850 for $2700, already love that camera
new or used? if new, where did you buy it from?
@@ItsWillLee used, found it on fb market
You know why I like this guy, because he doesn’t lie or mislead like some of the fuckers on here so just to get free perks for themselves... he says it like it is. Add to that he has a very high intelligence.. he’s got my vote !!! I’m going for the D3s or D4 myself. Screw the 500
Upgrading to the D500 pretty soon. Getting it from Roberts Camera on your recommendation. Already bought a tripod from them and they are great to deal with.
Roberts!!! :)
Θεωρία Απόφασις, πραγματικά απολαμβάνω τα βίντεο σχετικά με τις φωτογραφικές μηχανές :-)
I still using my d700 and d300s as backup right now
No D700 on the list??
Hello Ken, I have an opportunity to purchase a D3s with about 55k shutter clicks for less than $1k canadian. This will be a forth body that I want to use for remotes or other shoots where the client wants max 4mb jpeg files that I dont need to edit. I think this is the perfect body, would you agree?
The D850 is back in stock at most retailers. Wonder if the price will go down at all for thanksgiving and year end sales.
I have owned all except the D850. All amazing. Why wouldn’t you put the A9 into legendary? What is the fault of that body?
I’m happy with the XT3 but just wondering why most would consider the A9 as a better body... thanks Ken.
@@tothemoon2151 have owned was passed tense. I ONLY own a Fuji X-T3 and a Nikon F2 now.
Do you have a review on D3X?
yes, dont buy it
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Hahaha, thank you for the reply.
