I sold my last D700 4 years ago. It’s now late Sep 2022 & I’ve just bought another for £350 UK. 20k clicks, boxed, 2 condition 0 batteries, & super clean - BARGAIN! The output is really close to my D3S but subtly different. Loving it. ❤

I must confess, i've used d700 for 4,5 years and it I still remember it as a best nikon camera i ever had. I've made with it nearly 600 k and it did the job! I've made with it my best photos and i'm not lying, those 36 mpx in d800 where not satisfying me at all when i was printing 180x130 cm prints. It's awkward, but only now after years have passed i understood what a miracle camera it was. And i was printing even bigger files with it and it was ok those 12 mpx. I had no issues printing 3 meter panoramas or even bigger files... People who where buying my art work where asking me all the time the same question - what camera are you using? :)
Believe it or not, but it was actually you "Angry photographer" from whom i got to know that the sensor of d700 was a toshiba make. Thank you! ;)
It's a shame nikon do not deliver any more this kind of technology to buyers.
All these people with pixel wars are pretty much techno-photographer and i met dozens of them. It makes me smile when time by time you hear people saying to you: O look, there is a new camera which has that amount of pixels, bla bla. Even now i could probably do better landscape photo with d700 than d800 and it's true and i'm not lying. Especially long exposures. The dynamic range i was getting from d700 was out of this world and for the same reason i miss it so much....

I just picked up a D3s and a D700 this week. Epic machines and your comments about build that we ain't gonna see this any longer is a reason I will be picking up more of these. This translates into buying the best glass you can since the cost of the cameras is a fraction of the original cost and more so if you factored in inflation. Your videos are laced with humor and intuitive evaluations that knock the snot out of hyper math dependent, academic/forensic pinhead reviews. In short, your reviews are brilliant...and I only watched this specific one AFTER I got the cameras though the D700 is my second used one.
I have been using a Sony A6000, A7, and A77 Mark II recently and like the innovative things Sony dares to do with their cameras....
But now at these used price levels, I am able to also acquire classic and still very, very usable Nikon FX equipment ...... Plus have acquired some heavily discounted Canon APS-H models.....
The fact is the market has gotten drowned in ever newer models when in fact all of these older cameras were creating the best images back when they were introduced and in fact still are more than capable of doing the same.....
As you said about the D3, it IS a 6,000 dollar camera.....
Can you imagine somebody in 2030 backward engineering a D3? Nope.
So I agree with all your comments in this video and appreciate your sense of humor/irony since it shows your
depth of knowledge and "feeling" and profound appreciation about this magnificently engineered equipment.
RE the battery in the D3..it is native to the D2H, D2X, D2Hs, and D2Xs...and it is the grip battery for the D300, D300s..and by benign design as you mentioned for the D700 grip which boosts the FPS from 5FPS to 8FPS!! (the grip does similar speed boosts in the D300/D300s and in fact is the SAME grip!!)...
This is a buyer's market for supposedly outdated absolute highest end pro equipment....Your video advances the notion that there is significant residual operational/user value in this so called outdated machinery...

I just got a D700 and I’m amazed how well it feels and performs for a 12 year old camera. We are at a point where these are dirt cheap, while they still are modern enough. Most people do not want to buy them because of the 12 MP sensor. The seller of my D700 even had to explain in his advert why 12 MP is still enough. I got it for €260 ($290) with a shutter count of 23k.

I just got a Nikon D700 and it arrived today. The ad on Amazone was correct. It has 1204 shutter count. I believe that too, as it looks like a brand new camera. No scratches on the bottom or on the LCD etc. It looks like it came off the showroom floor yesterday. :) I paid 480$ US. I feel like I got a massive bargain! Now I need to buy some good glass off of your recommend list :) I have one lens from a Nikon N90 I got from my father when he passed. 35-105mm slide zoom AF the D model. Not bad to start but I want to get a couple primes. Thanks for all the quality information on this camera and lenses. Really helped out making my decision!

I foolishly sold my first D700 last year. I missed it so much that I started looking for another one. Just found one with 46K clicks on it, with three batteries and a Nikon battery grip, and all the boxes and papers that came with it when new. The camera was just serviced and cleaned by Nikon USA within the year as well. Got it on a late night auction where the seller ended his sale in the wee hours of the morning while everyone was in bed except me apparently. Got it for $600. I'm a happy camper.
I love my old D7000 and appreciate the capabilities of the D7200 I now use for work projects. But nothing for me matches the pure enjoyment of shooting with the D700 and all my older Nikkors being used at their "correct" fields of view.

The Fuji X100 produced the best jpegs of any camera with which I had shot up until recently. I did not think another camera could match it. Then I purchased the D700 (partly based on your recommendation), and its jpegs not only equal the X100, they exceed it! And I get the benefit of much better RAW files. You are dead on about he richness of colors on the D700. They are amazing. As for weight, just watched the recent documentary about Salgado ("The Salt of the Earth") which includes scenes about his latest work, "Genesis," for which which lugged a Canon 1DS Mark III around the world. He's 71.

Hi Ken, I would like to buy a second camera for my D700. It would be either the D3 or D3s. Here's the thing: I don't know if the better HI ISO performance of the D3s is worth the money. I could buy either a low 50k D3 or a low 70k shutter count D3s. Price difference is 350 Euros. I am shooting mostly in day light, but some of my pics I also do in the range 1600 - 3200 ISO. I heard the D3s supposed to have much better dynamic range. So which one would you recommend?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  6 лет назад

D3s average $1600.......the real advantage is teh buffer size, but its better ISO is nto that much better. ......what ?? only $400 euros diff there?????: thats much less than here, D3 here is MUCH MUCH cheaper, $800 vs. $1600
      get the D3s

D700... £550-600 in the UK used and the shutter count is goes around 20-80k.
Got one borderline mint condition with only 22k shutter count. Makes you wonder why you would even consider buying new unless your a rich of course. Once I print the images I cannot tell the difference with I use the same lens and post processing technique over my D750 which costs 3 times as much and has twice the features and mega pixels.
I think the digital sensor has hit a wall... Its why they are focusing so much on video and looks and size now, because from a photographic perspective nothing much is different.

That's a SERIOUS bargain - I paid £570 for mine with 34k on it. (It was from a Nikon dealer with a warranty.) Once you've shot with it you are just happy to own it! I sold a previous D700 and had a Fuji X-T1 and 4 lenses for several months. The Fuji stuff was good (easier to use and much more portable), but there was just something about the D700 output I liked better - so I bought another D700 in October 2017 this time I'm not letting it go.

Cotictimmy I know what you mean, There’s something about the D700 photos :) I took a few photos of a model lately with a Zeiss lens and it just looks sharp and smooth at the same time? If that makes any sense :) pictures pop out with that combo plus I use other lenses. I get nice stuff out of the 50m F1.8G, I also have old manual Nikkor stuff, 28, 50, 135 :) D700 likes them all

The D700 is onto my most wanted FF DSLR List since it's release - but unfortunately, i couldn't afford it yet...ever since then...and then i've seen samples compared with the 5D - hands down, the way weak AA Filter onto the 5D does make landscape shots sharper compared to the D700, slightly...besides that, of course the D700 is the much better camera in every aspect, and 3 years "younger". ;-) I really don't need more than 10 to 12 MP, for sure. I don't do cropping, 95% none, way seldom. With the D700 it's the same like with the Queen Mum 5D: forget all the tech blablah about DxOMark & this stuff - both can take very nice photographs - and that is all that counts.
Edit. Some people prefer the latest fuzz, and gear therefore...and some are just happy with what they've got...and/or enjoying to use older gear & lenses...i do. :-)

What is it in the firmware, filter, or? on the D3 that ""kills" the Color Saturation from the D700? What precisely is it that changes the D700 Color Saturation profile on the D3?

D700 was my favorite dslr. Pro body + pro images in an affordable package.
Nothing from nikon that came afterwards could beat it. D750 that came afterwards is a toy. Had to reach for fuji xt2 to find something even better.

Found a D3 with 103K clicks on it. Not bad for a 10 year old camera. What’s that? Two hundred shots per week, on average? The camera is a built like a battleship. This will be my new walk around camera with the 35mm f/2D lens.

Hey I've been following you for a while and I just want some input on the d3. I just picked one up with under 70000 shutter clicks. Now do you still think that it's a very relevant camera for today's day and age of technology. Yes I will be getting the d4 soon but I like the low mp being that I don't print big or crop a bunch. I shoot sports and events that don't require a whole heap of detail. What's your thoughts?

I have a D700 and I am often looking out for a second one at a good price but today my local camera shop put a mint D3 in the window!! good as new!! too good to be true!! so I asked about the counter!! only 12k!!! I paid 399 British pounds, it was funny when I was trying it out, like handling a gun your use to :) got to grips with it very fast. I love the sensor in the D700/D3 and I am lazy with file sizes!! 12mp is good enough for me anyway :) and JAPANESE build quality!!! grab it while you can :)

Bought a 80-200 2.8 from one of your video and very very very happy with it, Thanks alot.
but now I'm upgrading to FF. I'm deciding between a used D600 and a used D700, in my area I found both exactly the same price. ($700)...
which would you recommend?? I mainly do weddings (always around iso 3200 or more) and landscapes (occasionally prints at 15' x 12').

    Hi Angry Photographer,
Love all of your vids. I purchased almost mint condition of Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 after watching your review and I could not be more happier. Thinking to get Tokina 100mm f2.8 too next year.
I have a question regarding D7100 so it might be out of topic (sorry :( ). I have been using D7100 for about a year now and for the last few months I have been getting err message a lot recently when changing the aperture for every lenses I have. Only maximum aperture works for example I can shoot with f2.8 with my 80-200mm no problem but when I changed it to f4 or other aperture it started to gave me err message. After 10-15 minutes it seems ok but then the same problem occurred.
I have been asking around repair shop and they offered me half the price of my D7100 to fix it. So, do you have any idea what's wrong with it? I trust you since you have tremendous experience with cameras and lenses.
    Cheers,
    Ilham

    • @TheBerkeleyGang
      @TheBerkeleyGang 9 лет назад

+Ilham Nandana Try cleaning the contacts in the lens mount. If that doesn't work, send it to Keh for repair. Since it's happening on all lenses, the problem is with the body, so concentrate on that. Use a good electrical contact cleaner applied with a Q-tip. I use CRC 2-26, available from Home Depot and possibly Lowe's in the US. Good luck!
