Afterward, I thought "Oh my God, I gave away the wrong camera" I have now replaced it with a x7 which I hope will be a good replace"

Your impression is spot on and completely resonated with me. I moved away from the Canon ecosystem to Nikon back in the day for the exact same reasons that your correctly pointed out in your video. Of course the Canons were amazing and great and did the job really well however, the way the Nikons feel in the hand was something else. The build, the tactile feedback, their menu layout and ergonomics was on point. Their colour science was fantastic too. I still have a couple of basic Nikon bodies just for old times sake. I’ve now moved on to the Sony ecosystem as its more appropriate for what I do which is primarily motorsport and action and at the time of switching, Sony had the superior AF system as well as high fps. Having said that, the Sony never gives me that feel and sense of reliability that Nikons gave. The Nikons were built like a tank and was very confidence inspiring while working out there under various conditions. I have picked up a Nikon D850 many times at the store and chickened out as I couldn’t justify the purchase. I’m sure it will make it to my kit at some point. It’s probably the best and most satisfying modern camera ever built!

I'm hoping for a crop sensor version of the Z9 but if it doesn't come, I'll be happy with my D500 for some time to come. It was ahead of its time when it was released which has led to its longevity.

Is nobody going to mention the D750 I adore that camera, built to last like anything else from Nikon but it feels amazing works without a flaw and is quite cheap these days. I have used everything from the D700, D3, D3s, D5, D800e, D810, D500, D850 but I always love to come back to my D750. Love the feel it has and the color reproduction is incredible, I don’t think I'll ever sell that camera.

Excellent vid... to think that my first 'pro' digital camera, which I personally bought, was the Nikon D100 - highest MP at the time at 6MP! I used to shoot weddings on that thing and it never gave up... still have it someplace in a box! I bought that one in about 2000/21 or perhaps in 2002. Prior to that I used to shoot with D1 cameras and they were only about 2 or 3 MP! I have actually not taken shots on film since about 2000 for my professional work. Amazing really when I think about it! I used to be in the British Army and my trade was photography. They used to provide everything Nikon and we were some of the very first users of digital... great fun and it goes back to somewhere about 1995 when we started to be issued those cameras. Just before we got the Nikon D1 cameras, a few of us in my trade, actually had a Kodak (I forget the model) which used the Nikon F mount - it was something like 12 MP as I recall. Way before its time in fact and cost something in the +£25,000 mark! An absolute pile of carp it was and soon became redundant.
You are quite correct that the D3, then the D850 really were moments in time - now the Z9 seems to be another D3 moment it would seem. As is usual, Nikon comes good in the end... whilst all else are about the scream, Nikon really is the cream.
Time to sell the missus and buy a Z9 me thinketh!

Never used (and have no intention of using), a mirrorless camera. I have always liked large, heavy camera bodies. I had the D700 (with the vertical grip), which is legendary for its color rendition. Wouldn't be surprised if the D700 and grip weigh as much as a Pentax 67. Nice video. I've been shooting with Nikon cameras since the late 1970's. My first Nikon was an FM with motor drive. Then an F2AS in it's last year of production followed by an F3. Used those 2 the F3 and F2AS for a decade or more. Then sold them and got an N90 (F90 for the rest of the world) in the mid/late 90's. Shot with that Camera till 2006. Especially loved the matrix balanced fill flash with the SB25. Sold that off along with my lenses due to a medical issue and didn't pick up a SLR camera (film or digital) until recently when I finally got back on my feet financially and I bought an entire used D850 (7700 shots on it) system with various Lenses, Flashes, battery grip and other accessories. Could not be happier. What a Camera. To tell you the truth I wish I'd never sold that F2AS. The F3 was the workhorse the F2AS was my baby my first truly professional grade camera and was still in mint condition when I sold it. I hope the D850 will bring me as much enjoyment in my return to photography as did those old film Cameras.

I really, really enjoyed your story and video. I am an amateur photographer and started with a Pentax in the film days however my first DSLR was a Nikon D70 in early 2003 I believe. I really enjoyed “as you explain” the feel and layout of my Nikon DSLR’s. Being an amateur I haven’t owned as many cameras as you however my current camera is a Nikon D500 and I have owned a few others (all Nikon) over the years. You explain so accurately why I have stayed with Nikon. Their cameras just feel right to me and the layout is just so familiar each time I use a Nikon body. I am not a person who jumps from camera to camera or manufacturer to manufacturer on a whim or because of something being the latest or greatest. You explain the feelings around camera ownership so accurately and well. I stumbled across your video and really enjoyed it. I will continue to watch your videos in the future. There is something about Nikon cameras that have kept me with this brand. It is the feel of the camera and also the way Nikon produces and feels about their products that keep me coming back to them. Hard to explain but you do a great job.

Thank you for this fine video. As a Nikon user since 1967 of course a nikon in my hands feels like home compared to any other camera I have used or tried. Also the large collection of nikon lenses i have acquired over the years and still use for there unique qualities are still compatible with all the M mount cameras. For all of the younger photographers out there that might be reading this, you should know that the newer lenses are not always better, but rather offer different qualities that are possible by new glass/lense technology.

The D3, D3s and D3x were all professional grade bodies. The difference between the D3s and D3x is that the D3s (12mp) was made as an all round professional camera.e.g. Sports, Events, Wildlife and Photojournalism. While the D3x has a larger sensor(24.5mp) and was directed at pro photogs that did more studio and landscape photography, which required producing larger prints.

Very good sum up of your DSLRs, thank you. I'm only an amateur but I use an old D3s and I really enjoy using that old beast. It rains a lot in my town Bergen Norway, but this camera is suited for "rainy" shots, so to say. It's waterproof and handles the rain well, yes my only concern are my old lenses. I don't need the new and fast ones for my photography so the old gear suites me were well, taking only one shot at the time! But yes, I'd like a D850 and hopefully the release of the Z9 now will make many professional photographers to change from the D850 to the Z system. That will benefit amateurs like me! Thank's again! :)

I've used nikon since film days. My first nikon dslr was the D600. It still shoots tack sharp images at mega sizes! It never was good in low light. I still like this camera I shoot now with D780, it's awesome. I was going to get the 850 but it is a bit heavier and I wanted to use a heavy 70-200 lens. After seeing your video I may need to the 850. Also thinking about the mirrorless.

If you have d780, you don't need d850. All you'll get Is more mega pixels and slightly better ovf auto focus for sports but d780 had better live view auto focus. They aren't far apart.
      Save money for z9 rather

    * D3S (I had the D700 for 1/2 the price)
    * D850 (Only the lockdown slowed it down)
? Z9 (the Z7II + grip is really nice, and the Z9 seems to be "no compromises")

A very good morning Sir - from the middle of Minnesota (USA),
Absolutely excellent / professional presentation! You are a complete "natural" in front of the camera. I just discovered / subscribed to your channel this AM. I am currently 73 years old (chronologically / physically but not maturationally - I think that remains at around 18-22 years of age having matured during the fabulous 1960's and just preferring that frame of mind).
I first fell in love with Nikon in approximately 1967 following the purchase of a Nikon F. This was followed by the Nikon F Photomic FTN, Nikomat (Japanese market and spelling), Nikkormat, Nikon F5 and a few other brands for a while and then back to Nikon with the Nikon D1X, D2X, D3X, and ending with the illustrious D850 (all of which I still own).
So I'm quite pleased to note I have all the cameras recommended by you in this terrific video.
I'm really looking forward to viewing all of your other videos.
    Thank you!
All the very best to you and yours in the upcoming New Year,
    Terry

Best Nikon DSLRs and no mention of D700? By far this is one of Nikon's greatest. Have shot with many of Nikon's but none has the soulfulness of the D700. Yes, it has the same 12.1 mp sensor as in D3 but the way the images are processed in D700 are different. The Color, the Contrast, The grains are simply amazing.

There was no way around it when everything needing to be silent. When my eyes started giving out, along came digital/AE/AF so I switched to the D700/D800/D810, and the D850😍😍😍! I now use the D850 and experimenting with the Z50. Z9 is next. OBTW: I still have all my digital cameras. Just couldn't sell them. I gave a very good friend my F2As as a birthday gift with motor drive and 250film Back. He says he will it back to me when he passes on. I just can't bring myself to sell any of my "Nikon Babies." I loan them out or give them away, but never sell them. I don't regret it for one moment. I pull one or two of them out when I need just the right photograph that only we can produce. I love it that way. Raymond

Nice video. Took me back in time. The feel of holding certain things, driving a 4WD Jeep etc is beyond words. The first camera I bought was Yashica FX3 in 1983. Then an FX3 super 2000 and then Nikon FE2 with 50mm f/1.2 lens. A dedicated Sunpak 42 guide number flash. Soft , Polarizing and colour filters. Some E-series Lenses etc. I still have all the Nikon stuff including the Cool Pix 5700 bought in 2003. The Coolpix is great camera with a horible menu. Then I moved to Canon. Moded one of them to full spectrum and tried infrared using astronomic clip on fillers. Now its only phone camera. :D
