At the time of making this video Nikon were still manufacturing the D850. I know the inevitable will come eventually. I wonder if 2024 will be the year Nikon finally stop manufacturing the D850? 🤷‍♂📸

After watching some of your videos I went into my local camera shop here in Ireland just before Christmas with the possibility of buying a Z8 .The curiosity of the D850 was burning in my head . I had the intention of trading in my D800 and Nikon 50 1.4g. There was a used D850 in pristine condition on the shelf ,it had only 1860 shutter count ,It was 1899 euros .My choice was to sell all my 12 Nikon lenses ...the Trinity and the Primes with the D800 and go for the Z8 the 24-70 and the 14-24 .To make a long story longer i ended up walking out with the D850....after paying , followed later in the month with the purchase of a Sigma 50 Art prime, nikon 16-35 and the Nikon 20mm 1.8g.
I thought ... Mirrorless can wait awhile .
Enjoyed the video Adrian cheers !!

I do extensive nightscape and timelapse on the D850 from freezing cold to boiling hot days in the So Cal Deserts. I also shoot a lot on Maui in humidity. This is THEE camera for that work. The silent mode for shooting time lapse is the WAY TO GO as it is quiet! But the camera is tough, I have dropped them, they are reliable and I don't think I'll ever go mirrorless, just no need. GREAT VIDEO Adrien! I love your work.

End of 2023 I picked up a D850, mint, less than 50,000 clicks. Included Nikon battery grip and extra Nikon battery, 128GB XQD and SD cards, plus the usual items, in original boxes. Winning bid was $1525 US, off eBay. $1650 with shipping and my state tax. Loving it. I have quite a lot of Nikon DSLR bodies and lenses, but this may be the last one I purchase, being an old fart.

Great video ~ I agree with every single word! I’m a professional who still uses the D850 as my daily workhorse. There is a reason Nikon is still charging a premium price ($2500 U.S.) for this body: It still produces premium quality images and it’s a joy to use!

I trust my old Nikon D700 and I tried the Z6 but quickly return it! The EVF never impressed me compared to the simple pure OVF experience. Instead I went back to F-mount DSLR and settled with the infamous Df and I love every moment of it. DSLRs forever!

On the topic of pro-body Nikon DSLRS. We cant forget the Mighty Nikon D3, it was Nikon's 1st full frame camera and was released in 2007. Iv'e had this Body since last year and it hasn't let me down even once. Iv'e had Nikon bodies throughout my life (D3, D300, D300s, D90) and this one takes the top spot in terms of performance, image quality and ergonomics. It is soo good in the hand and having lens options dating back to the late 70s when the F-Mount was standerdised gave the Nikon DSLRS an upper hand in terms of lens options, the sky was the limit, as some might say, following behind it is the Nikon d300s, which i also dearly loved but died at 1.2m clicks. This just goes to show the longevity and reliability of Nikon DSLRS. Great video Adrian, keep them coming!

Hello Adrian, you seem the one photographer that is still endorsing the Nikon D-850 and I agree completely with your assessments. I have this camera and I bought it new for $2500.00 US dollars when there was a discount of $500.00 offered. I could not be any happier, the images are superb, the battery life is exceptional and as you mentioned about the lenses available it makes a ton of sense. I also have the Nikon D-810 which does a good job and I have been tempted of selling it but I have not found a convincing reason so I keep it. I just purchased the Z5 and the 24-200 mm lens which I use it for a walk around only. All the Nikon cameras are an excellent tool if used well. Thanks for the video. Cheers from Oregon state US.

Had and still have a D800, I bought a used D850 (2000 clicks) with Nikon MD-D18 for approx 2400 AUD. I love the ergonomics and features and not being into video, I do not care about the "shortcomings" in that area. Today, you can pickup so many high quality F-Mount lenses for very less money , not being a Pro, i'll stick with the mirror and ❤it.

Thanks for the video, I just enjoy them all! and I think you are the only one that still talks about DSLR (nikon ones) and I know the new tech is here but when you are happy with what you have and have a system, why should I go to the new tech??? I do not know since and "old" DSLR can still do the job! Cheers from Mexico!!!

Hi Adrian, I purchased my D850 Last year. At B&H Photo Video. They had a promotion for $2,199.00. it is everything you say it is!! I have a D500 i got 4yrs ago I absolutely love. I have a part time Photography business and it's done great I do Weddings, Portraits and other Photos.
So getting the D850 was a necessity. It's the most incredible Nikon I have ever owed, I'v been using Nikons since 1978 when I got the bug in High School. Plus it's menus and control layout is the same as the D500. The 850 is now my main camera and the D500 is my back up. I love the tank like build, Resolution and the weight helps balance long lenses. Plus digitizing Slides and Negatives with the D850 Is fantastic. I have played with the Z9 and Z8 at the store. they don't
Feel as solid as my 850 and the Ergonomics don't feel right plus I hate EVF. I recommend any buddy looking to get D850 check B&H Photo Video what for promotion. I buy all me camera gear there.

This really needed to be said! I've been shooting wildlife with my d810 for years and haven't changed it yet, because the image quality is, to this day, indistiguishable from today's high-end stuff... And you can get one used for, like, 1000€. The autofocus never let me down and the optical viewfinder is a pleasure to look in. Gotta be honest tho, I wish I could shoot those 10 bit internal videos aswell, and if I was starting I would go mirrorless for that reason, but as of now, changing all my gear only for better video, as a photographer, doesn't really convince me

Hi, thank you for the great video. Thumbed, subscribed and on my way to watch your others... I was wondering what filter system you use to go with it, as it seems to work on several of your lenses.
I have a D850 and the usual 24-70 (the old one, so so) and 70-200 (the last one, very good) from Nikon, and their indispensable (to me) 20mm. I was wondering if your kit would adapt on all of those. Thank you for any insight...

Great video Adrian, beautiful photos that underscore your claim about this camera. I'm still relatively new to it as I bought it on the secondary market for a very reasonable price joining my D750. The reason for it was the quality of the pictures and I was not willing to sell my collection of excellent lenses at bargain prices when moving to Z bodies. I'm glad that you reassure me in the potential of this camera which is still way above my level of photography but I think that the D850 comes close to perfect in terms of image quality and will be with me as long as live.

Hi Adrian, a great video, buddy! I have to say, the quality of most of the cameras that got launched within the past 5-6 years is amazing. It is interesting how the journey will go on with cameras. I personally don't need more megapixels, I'm even satisfied with the dynamic range. Autofocus got already to a point that is just crazy and ISO noise is not a big issue anymore, that's even almost gone due to denoisers. The only thing the camera industry could do is putting more AI functions into their cameras over the next years. Definitely interesting what will happen here and what we will really need in future 😊
Great to hear that you are still satisfied with the D850. It's a great camera, for sure!
Thank you for the video, enjoy your weekend,

Enjoy your weekend buddy, cheers 🙏📸

Despite owning several Z cameras, I still shoot my D850 and D700 during our harsh Canadian winters because it is easier to use with cold weather photo gloves and it has excellent battery life when colder than -15C. Both DSLRs still produce great images with the quality F glass that I own. I travel with lighter Z cameras and optics, but at home, especially in winter, DSLRs still have a place!

Hi Adrian, first off thank you for all your great videos, esp the settings for shooting birds in flight. It's been a great help. I'm an interior design and construction photographer, but shoot landscape and birds for therapy. There's only so much neutral wallpaper and carpets you can shoot without going insane😉
I still shoot with my amazing D850 and have a D810 as back up. I'm not a stick in the mud and would be quite happy to move over to mirrorless if I thought it would improve the quality of my shots. I saw a comment mention the wonderful D700, which I still have. I don't use it anymore, but I get sentimentally attached to inanimate objects that have served me well and will never sell it - not that it's worth much nowadays LOL! I'm in the UK and there's a reputable company who sells grey market D850s for £1599. I'm seriously considering purchasing another one for that price.

You're spot on. I still use my d850 all the time. For photos, it's still a powerhouse of a camera, and I would put it against anything.
My only complaint is that I do a lot of video, and this camera has become very dated as far as videos go. Yes, it shoots in 4k, but so many other cameras at this price point now shoots in LOG format and has a much better auto focus. I've found myself doing just as much video from my smartphone as this camera because it shoots is LOG/ProRes and auto focuses much better.

Hi Adrian, the D850 is selling in the UK at £2545 in Grays of Westiminster and £2399 in WEX. I bought mine when it was first released and it's still going strong, although now as a back-up to my Z9.

I bought my D850 in 2018 when I had a chance to go to Auschwitz and new I had to take a great camera. I was not disappointed.
A couple of weeks ago I was shooting in North Carolina and bumped into someone shooting a nice Z9. She said a lot of her friends still shoot D850s which made me feel good. I’m retired now and can’t afford to go dumping a lot into a new rig and accessories.
All that said, I absolutely love my D850. I may find a used one to have a second body… thanks for the great video!

Great video. I have a D850 and D780. Love them both. I use the D850 for stills and the D780. If I branch into video I'll most likely use the D780 since it has the Z6 video guts. Regardless I couldn't ask for a better brace of cameras. Price USA is $2796 for a USA warranty not grey market. There are times Nikon offers $500 off that's when I purchased mine.

Here in Brazil the D850 had seen almost no drop in price into the Nikon mirrorless age until the Z8 came along. That is understandable, considering that only the Z8 may be considered as the true successor to the D850. After that, the price of a new D850 dropped about 15-20% as of now. That makes the Z8 currently about twice as expensive as a new D850 here in Brazil. An interesting thing happening here is that the D850 still doesn't show up much in the used market and, when it does, it costs almost the same as a new one. That didn't change after the Z8 arrived.
(The Brazilian prices are usually about 50%-60% over the US retail prices due to import taxes, btw)
Two things may be read from that: 1.) The D850 holds up in value extremely well, most certainly due to its reliability, toughness, superb image quality and lens selection; 2.) Not many Brazilian D850 owners are willing to depart from it, most certainly due to the aforementioned factors and how much more it costs to get a proper mirrorless replacement. So yeah, the D850 is a superb photographic investment, no wonder it still sells well. I doubt Nikon is blind to that - taking into account as well the brand's known attachment to its legacy and tradition, I don't see Nikon discontinuing the D850 anytime soon.

By end of last year i bought my 2nd D850. Using this camera is amazing feeling, best ergonomy, ridiculous AF (especially if i compared with Z6II in lowlight places). Maybe mirrorless cameras have better AF in sunny days, but when I use D850, I know thatI can trust my Boy, and his AF won't let me down.

Thanks Adrian as always a great video. The 850 is the best camera I've owned, I was going to go mirrorless but can't justify the extra $'s for a Z8 for another 45mp camera. My (very) old D610 has died so my next backup camera for my trips to Canada/Alaska this year and Iceland in '25 will be a...D850 The person holding the camera will get the same results.

It is still providing excellent image quality, paired with really good lenses. Maybe not that good in high iso ranges, like above 6400, but nothing to shame about. For photo only or mostly, it's still an excellent camera. Paired with top of the line Sigma Art lenses, it is delivering constantly. Will use my till it's able to work or till it won't be serviceable. I have dummy batteries, capable of running from power bank, if the EL-18c-s are not enough, like bellow -10 C for long period of time. Yes, it's heavy, but it doesn't quit. Operated it at 40 C as bellow -17 C. Reliable beast of machine.

I was looking for a newer camera and became excited about going ML and the Canon R5. I traded much of my Nikon lenses and a few bodies to purchase the R5. Nice camera the R5 is. I started shooting Nikons back in the 70's with a F2AS. Been shooting Nikons ever since. When I made a decision to try ML, Nikon in my humble opinion was way behind the 8 ball. I was really thinking of picking up the D850 and forgoing ML. That is what I should have done. I have the R5 and some nice and too expensive RF lenses. However I have bought back many of the Nikon F mount lenses and shoot more and more with my D700, D4s and the D810. I am still lusting over the 850 as my Nikon bodies are starting to show their age but keep on ticking. I would loose my shirt selling the Canon system. I acquired more very good and mostly used F mounts lenses. I am only a serious hobbyist now days and living in Wyoming with the harsh environment and wonderful landscapes and wildlife I use my Nikons more and more. Thanks for uploading your interesting video.

I use my Nikon D850 now more than 3 years for my wildlife photography with D800 in Srilanka. I use it with Nikon 400mm f 2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 for birds and other wild animals such as elephants, sloth bears , leopards and other in the national parks . It is a amazing camera with fast and reliable had never failed to capture illusive bears and enigmatic leopards in the country . When l go generally l stay in the jungle for 3-4 days and come home with more than thousand photos. The best times are the migratory season for birds , and cloudy mornings and evenings has no worry of talking crisp clear pictures of leopards and sometimes with cubs.
Large birds are my favorite and the endemics where lagoons are plentiful and water holes in these jungles. Fantastic peace of equipment and a simply remarkable camera and equally important lens like 400mm f2.8 to go with it for the work. 👌👍

Yes, one year ago I bought a good used d850 (+300k exposures), but it's in fine fine condition, no scratches. It had been well treated and regularly serviced by Nikon technicians. I paid 6,500 Danish kroner, corresponding to approx. US$1,000
Thinking of keeping it, and if one day it turns out the shutter ends it life, then I'll pay the 400 - 500 us$ and have it replaced.
I am really happy about it.
But unfortunately I use it too little, as I am not a professional photographer.

I mainly take photos of landscapes nowadays (used to take bird photos with an old Canon) so I ended up buying a D850. Saved a tonne of cash. Z8 was brilliant for video, but I’d never use all the insane things that camera can do. And you were right about battery life, the Z8 chewed through ‘em. Can you recommend any good landscape lenses?
