  • Come along with me on my first Photo Adventure with the Nikon D850! I'm sharing some of the cool features I discovered as I set up the menus. We start off a little rocky trying to find the perfect snowy location... I checked all the weather/road reports and this area was supposed to have been slammed with snow (apparently the storm shifted slightly). Lol! But we end up finding snow and the perfect location to test out Focus Shift, one of the features I was most excited to play with. I hope you enjoy!
    00:00 Introduction
    03:46 Sensor: Dynamic Range
    06:21 45MP Sensor: More Flexibility

    Whoa, my camera's crooked!
Here's the backstory... I left the house forgetting to transfer my regular tripod mount from my D7000 to the D850. So I had to use the extra one I carry with me for emergencies. No matter what I try, I can't attach it both securely AND straight! So I opted for secure over straight. My camera may appear to be sliding off the tripod, but rest assured, it's completely secure.
Next time I'm out in the field I'll have an L-Bracket Tripod Mount that will make switching from Portrait to Landscape much smoother.
So tell me, what workarounds have you had to do when out in the field?

Invest in a L-bracket for the D850. Much better to use when mounted portrait on a tripod

@@DrAdrianRowleyI never use an L Bracket and much prefer to use Manfrotto 501 quick release plates. I'm not keen on little Kirk brackets either, so even convert them to except the 501 plates using the Manfrotto MN77.

Funny many apsc users hated full frame users , they had thre idea we was putting them down , how using hi def sensors and pro lenses(affordable £500 each) you have the trinity for £1500 ! The results are astoundingly sharp, the d850 is the perfect camera , buying mirrorless your forever upgrading to the mk 2 and mk 3 and four , theyre obsolete when you leave the shop !

@lovethatshotadventures hi, just stumbled across your video, it was fun recalling many trips to eastern Idaho and NW Wyoming. I had progressed from D7000 (~8 years) and then to D7200 -D500-D850 in two years... I cannot imagine the biplane to rocket ship leap you made! I wish I could keep every Nikon I ever had, but settled on holding onto my original FE as display memory. For me having a D500 and D850 covers all the bases - speed to saturation and wide dynamic range, DX and FX... Enjoy the journey!

I have the D850, please check into the Carl Zeiss lens for nikons. The older models lens are the ones you should look for, Manual Focus Lens. I have the 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm.
    You can't go wrong.
I use mostly the Focus peaking mode in live view and touch shot.

Love this video, seems especially appropriate for me. I'm older (72) and don't wish to change all my stuff over to mirrorless, thinking one more camera to last me the rest of my life will be a D850, should never have to buy another. However should buy it soon as the DSLR may become obsolete soon (as far as buying a new one) so your comments are especially appreciated . And I absolutely love the setting, an old town with a western flair and gorgeous scenery , nice work!

The Nikon D850 in live view has a electronic shutter if there are not fast moving subjects its good to use as its less wear and tear on the mechanical shutter. But you might loose a little dynamic range. But the upside is there is zero shutter shock.

Perhaps you used the "My Menu" in your D7000? It is the most important 'user interface' feature for me. It has the dozen or so menu items I either use for every photo session (changing the image folder number, checking batteries, ...) or use twice a year but tend to forget (set Time/Date & Daylight Savings Time).
As setting which the D7000 has, and the D850 gives more options for, is the "d5: Exposure Delay Mode", especially intended for your genre of photography. [But it's really annoying having it on when photographing an event...]
Perhaps less important for landscapes, but very useful for some other photography genres is Rating pictures. I have a function button set for that during playback, so pressing that function button and turning the dial gives 1-5 stars. Any time I'm photographing a subject, whether a wedding or portrait session, if I show the person a picture they really like, I immediately give it 3*** so I know that is one of the ones to deliver.
Enjoy your photo adventure with the D850!

I used my 24-70 for a few hours tonight on a Photo Adventure and you do notice the weight after a bit. Having my camera on my cross-body strap helped when not in use, and of course, when I used a tripod it wasn't an issue. is the high mp sensor causing you to use high shutter speeds to avoid hand held sharpness issues? Besides the 1/focal length rule....... Thanks Martin

    • @lovethatshotadventures
      @lovethatshotadventures  Год назад

I haven’t noticed anything to the point where I feel limited at all. I have been using slightly faster shutter speeds (nothing too significant though) because my lenses are longer/heavier and I want to compensate for any movement that might cause handholding. What I’ve experienced is a noticeable increase in sharpness from my previous camera/lens setup. Prior to upgrading to the D850, I was using the D7000 and entry-level lenses, so I’m seeing improvement in my image quality for sure.

    • @chaser5515
      @chaser5515 Год назад

Thank you for responding. I dont know where the thought originated but I have been thinking as resolution increased that camera movement / image smear increased and if too low of shutter speed, image sharpness suffered. Best wishes for your project.

Work Arounds......One of the most common ones and annoying is not carrying my circular polarizer on me. However
I am beginning to and will definately on vacation. Because without it, shooting thru glass causes reflections and with it eliminates
the glass. You don't need to be in a museum far from home shooting thru glass and slap yourself over annoying reflection, Having a great
sky of clouds and not making them pop off the page is short changing your ability to use all your knowledges and enhance the final image.
And no Photoshop helps, but it's not the same. Writing check list notes of things to bring is so easy....just do it. Like your vacation list of things to bring.....one you'll forget....an umbrella and after it rains on your parade is not the time to look for that list, Always start with...Rain Gear !

Got myself a brand new used one last year - and am still discovering it. But would never EVER used it without a strap. Never did with any NIKON - and never will. Sometimes you want both hand s free and always you want to be safe to NOT drop the camera!

Hi, new viewer here. I was wondering about your gear so I clicked on your "Take a peek at the rest of my hear here:" link but there's no other links there to see your gear. 🤷🏼‍♂

Thanks for clicking over to my gear page! The links are images, so it might take a second for them to load. Each of the images are clickable to either products (affiliate links) or review posts I’ve written.

@@lovethatshotadventures Thanks, the images loaded. It's odd that they didn't load until I refreshed the page. 🤷🏼‍♂

I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a glitch, so I cleared my website cache and it seems to be working for me. Let me know if you continue to have trouble.

@@TC_Conner I’m glad it’s working for you. It could have been the cache issue. Thanks for letting me know!

I have the d810 from d7100 so the difference between d850 vs d7000 is astronomical 😊 keep clicking

The D850 will give you shutter shock, the huge amount of pixels will show all your faults you never knew you had in your 12 megapixel cameras. I thought I could hold the camera still from 60 to lower ....what an absolute shock ! It has slapped me in the face and Exposed
the real unsteady soft image, plus why to calibrate your lens to each camera, they really don't automatically work together !

If you haven’t already done so don’t forget to fine tune your lenses.

Come to think of it, I remember fine tuning the lenses I had when I first got the camera, but I don’t think I did the 70-200. Thanks for the reminder! 👍

      Dido...
      I'm rocking a D810 & D600, wanting a D850.
Can only imagine how great the new Mirrorless are..
I refuse to pay the extortionate prices presently, I'd rather wait & receive the Tech at low prices in future.
