Totally agree with your video, I had a D810 and changed over to mirrorless what a mistake, now making a big decision to go back to D850. Anyone should think hard before they change systems.
Eyup Craig. I actually use the D90 as my main camera. Despite it's age, my Dad managed to get one for me for my birthday a few years back, second hand (obviously) with a shutter count of 547!! I personally love it, and even though it's only 12.something megapixels it's plenty for me... at the moment. 😂😂I'm a bit of a short arse too, and I must admit that a flippy screen is the one thing I'd want in a new camera. I actually shoot from a wheelchair so the problem's even more so.
As you are having many analogue slide, you might have a look at the Nikon ES-2 digitizing adapter in connection with the D850. It a great tool. I did perfect scans in full 45.7 MP resolution of slides an negatives.
This was a great video, with wonderful honesty, as well as some nice images. I agree the 850 is an incredible tool, it takes a while to get comfortable with. But we are talking stellar performance. We are both incredibly similar. When you started talking past equipment, you made me crack up. By the way I shot with the mamiya 645, yes it was a fantastic camera, I traded it for a hasselblad 501. Thanks again great video.
Just catching up with your content, Craig. When you talk about the difference a large MP range can make it reminded me of the joy I felt moving from 25mp to 50 with my Canon 5DS... It's evil joy of course, because it means I can carry on being a sloppy photographer and crop bad images :)
Hi Eddie. I like that, evil joy. Sometimes sloppy works for me. especially when you cannot quite get into the required position. (without falling off a rock or falling down a hole. That's when cropping out the bad bits can give you the desired composition, and occasionally you see a composition within a composition that you did not see at the time of pressing the shutter. Thank you for watching. Looking forward to your Padley re-shoot.
I just picked up the D850 today I have had the D7100 for a while. Just can’t make the mirrorless jump yet and love my old Af-D lenses which don’t auto focus on the new Z series. Old School 👍
You described my current dilemma. I have a D500 which I truly enjoy. I want to justify moving to the D850 but I’m struggling. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Gene. First you need to ask yourself what more do you want from your photography? and what subjects do you photograph? D500 DX format 20.9 MP sensor to the D850 FX format 45.7 MP sensor will give you a leap in image quality. However the D850 will produce larger files for your computer to deal with. To get comparable image quality to the D850 in Mirrorless you would need to look at the Z7ii or the Z8. The D850 is at a very competitive price at the moment. Second hand FX lenses are also plentiful. Having said all that I will direct you back to the first line and ask yourself that question and work from there. The D850 is a very capable workhorse of a camera and has the ability to deliver stunningly detailed images. You are very welcome to reply with any further questions. Thank you for watching.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 Thanks, Craig for a timely reply. My interest in photography is from a hobbyist perspective (not professional). I go for walks and shoot BIF and other animals. I have recently become interested in macro photography which led to my interest in the D850 with it's in camera stacking feature (not in the D500). I rented a D850 for a week and enjoyed using it. My PC handles the files just fine. However, I don't have a 4K monitor so most of the pics I took with the D850 did not look noticeably different from those I took with the D500. I tend to do a lot of cropping so the D850 should provide more pixels to work with. I only print what I believe to be exceptional pictures -- meaning not many :) I would likely not keep my D500 so my investment in a D850 could be manageable. Again, I appreciate your comments and advice. Regards, Gene
Hi Craig. Great channel! I am also a D850 user, such an excellent camera, like you still learning to use its awesome set of onboard tools. I think with Photoshop you can utilize focus shifting/stacking to keep things in foreground and background in focus. I have Lightroom but not sure if it can do that. Born in 1965 and Like you been doing this since like ten years old, sometimes I miss my old F5. Film was fun👍
Hi Thomas, Focus stack images have to be opened in Photoshop as layers and it knits all the layers together. Film was fun and challenging as well. I don't miss the smell of the dark room chemicals. But miss the magic of the images appearing in the develop tray. My D850 is my forever camera. Thank you for watching.
UFB! I want to believe I only now got the D850, the dynamic range is indeed impressive. I've never been this excited to work with RAW files. Of course my previous cameras were D70 and D300.. so this is quite the jump.
Craig, Your photo past is quite eccentric 👍 All the money you spent on developing black and white photos you could have purchased Sony . I'm upgrading from a budget canon to Nikon D850 for the iso64 and 45mp . Great photos 👍
I've a D800 and am interested in upgrading to the D850 If I was to go mirrorless I'd have to buy lenses. It's been suggested that I use my F mount lenses with the FtZ adapter but I might as well stay with DSLRS if that's the case
I have digitized over two decades of 35/120 slides (Kodachrome) and negatives and got rid of my color darkroom after I moved to digital in 2000. Never owned a Nikon D800 series DSLR (don't do landscape) but the D3 and D300 since 2007 and now ready for the arrival of the Z9.
Hi Chris. I have a D850 and wondered if you have any recommendations for a protector for the rear screen. Only just found your channel and enjoying the videos. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Karl, I purchased a set from Amazon. one part protects the rear screen and the other protects the top glass panel. Amazon details. Screen Protector for Nikon D850 Camera LCD + Top Screen [2+2Pack],ULBTER 0.3mm 9H Hardness Tempered Glass Screen Saver Anti-Scrach Anti-Fingerprint Anti-Bubble £7.99. Thank you for watching.
For the reason staying on the DSLR camera platform and as also a Nikonian world since 2007 August and I think almost the same age liked 👍and subscribed.
We're practically separated from birth. Same history with me, swap the D700 for a D300s and you have it. Love my D850, bloody heavy but it's a brick and has all the features you mention and that you need.
I have the D850 and a few other Nikons as well as the D700 and D3S. No reason for me to move on to Z as I have all the lenses I need and I like my results.. Will the Z make me better? No.
I did not know you before. I really appreciate your video and your teachings. I have been in doubt for a long time whether to move from my Nikon D-810 to the D-850 or Nikon Z cameras. I think you have the arguments and the reason. I haven't made any decisions yet. It seems to me that you do the post-production with Lightroom, which is very expensive for us, and that is why I work with great pleasure on Affinity Photo and Capture 1. I will follow your channel and your videos. Thank you and greetings from Bogota, Colombia.
Hi Thomas. Greetings from Nottingham UK. It has taken me a long time to get on with lightroom. I previously used Nikon Capture NX2. I pay monthly subscription which includes both Light room and Photoshop which I feel is good value. Thank you for watching and all the best whichever camera you choose.
Keep your D810. I downgraded to the D850 a year and half ago, and all I can say about the D850, is that it is a Piece of Shit. Has never focused properly, regardless of Lens, AF mode, AF settings, AF Fine Tuning. Has horrible Battery Life, less than 300 shots per Charge, on any of the 3 Batteries. Spots of Banding appear in the Images, including the NEF files. Halos and Mosquito Effects are all over the place, even a ISO64. Very Noisy Images by 400ISO. Has been back to Nikon Twice. Nikon claims the Fecal Matter is with Factory 'Tolerances'. Those 'Tolerances' must be wide enough to drive 3 or 4 Semi Trucks through, Side by Side. It had a Clean Sensor, til Nikon cleaned it. Now EVERY Picture taken since it was returned has a blotch. WORST DSLR I have ever owned, correction, WORST Camera I have ever touched.
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 You must have a shocking example if it performs like that. Surprised Nikon has not fixed the issues. Agree on the battery life. I mostly use live view and that certainly is having a drain on the batteries at the moment.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 I don't use live view, I grew up with SLRs, so it is the viewfinder for me. Horrible Camera the D850 is. Nikon would stick their thumb their Ass and say they checked it. I was told they took Hundreds of Pics to study it. A check on the Shutter Count, showed fewer than 30. It is a real Piece of Shit. The D810 wasn't perfect, but at least it could Focus, my D800 was okay. The only Nikon DSLR I have owned that didn't need Warranty Work was the D100. The D200 had banding issues, the D800 went back for some upgrade, and Black Dot in the Tripod Mount, the D810 went back for some Firmware update.
How is low light performance of the D850 vs the D800? I found myself shooting in expanded ISO mode recently (night) and photos are really noisy unfortunately... Would you choose a D780 over a D850? (I am a "serious hobbyist", not a pro).
Hi JD, I have never used expanded mode on either camera. I did some night photography last night and used 800 iso for hand held shots and then switched to 64 iso with tripod. 800 iso needed some noise reduction in the shadows the 64 iso was super clean. I did look at the D780 but wanted to higher sensor resolution. D800 36mp, D780 25mp. D850 45mp. I shoot raw and the D850 produces 50mb files, which can slow light room down when it comes to processing. I think the D780 produces 25mb files. I downloaded some example raw files when the D850 first came out and realised I would eventually need a faster processor. I currently have a windows 11 based system with 32mb of Ram and a INTEL i9 Processor which deals with the raw files fairly quickly. From the reviews I read the D780 produces some awesome images.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 thanks for sharing all that! On the IT side, I realised that some image/video processing softwares have done a good job at leveraging the GPU. I now buy my laptops based on the graphic card ;) da vinci resolve works real fast :)

Hi Erikdewllde, I would say yes. I am looking to get a second D850 body next year. It is definitely still worth buying I still get amazed by the detail it can capture every time I take it out.
Mario: If you get a chance to use that D850 again I would suggest to check the white balance setting. I’ve had my D850 for two years and have always kept the white balance on ‘Auto’ for my JPEG’s and it has never given me a tint. Craig mentioned shooting RAW which does not include any settings like white balance, picture controls…etc..etc…RAW is RAW and you have full control through post processing. Also remember what you see on back of the camera is a JPEG on a small screen. Hope this helps…

Hello, Chris I'm planning to buy my first camera at the end of this year or next year😅 My mind is already leaning toward d850, but most people recommend the mirrorless model So I want to ask you If you buy a camera later this year or next year, will you choose the d850?😀 The disadvantage of the dslr camera is that it requires regular pin Calibration, and the mirrorless camera is that the price of the body and lens are still expensive, but the d850 quality of the picture looks really good, so I'm worried😅
Hi, Yes I would still buy the D850 even if i had the money to buy into the Z system. The more I use this camera the more I am appreciating the image quality that it is delivering in all kinds of conditions. If anything I would put my money into more lenses. The two camera systems will be different to operate, so your choice might depend on what you have experienced so far with other cameras. I have very much grown up with the DSLR system. A new generation will now embrace and grow up with the mirrorless system. Whichever system you choose both will give you exceptional image quality. Good luck with the choice that you make.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 Thank you very much for your kind reply😁 Most people know that the d850 is a fantastic camera, but I was disappointed with the trend of the camera market these days, which recommends mirrorless😅 I thought that my choice was not wrong With your confident recommendation of d850😶 Of course, there is news that a new camera model will be released soon, and among the current mirrorless models, the quality of the picture of the Z9 is similar to that of the d850, but the price is too expensive😅 I hope the d850 will continue to be a masterpiece of DSLR cameras😉
Yes I remember the days of Kodachrome, I still have all my old dark room equipment in the closet and one roll of T-Max 100 thats been sitting in a drawer for years.
Hi fixitright. I wish I still had all my old dark room equipment, it would be nice to dabble with some old negatives again and create some prints. I am pretty sure there would be a good niche market for Kodachrome 64 to make a comeback. Thank you for watching.

D850 is an excellent camera but slow Frame rate, a mere 5 frames / sec. Nikon should have move it up with new processor, and higher resolution for its screen. Unfortunately, Nikon fails every feature for greatness of DLSR
@@LMoProVisualComm Just too slow. Look at Z50, more than 10 frame/sec and it is not sport camera. It is the processor that can not handle the amount of data.
@@LMoProVisualComm I have the D850 too. The frame rate is needed when you need it even not in sport mode. If Nikon put newer processor into to speed up, that would be different story.
The D850 was not designed to be a sports camera with a gagillion frames per second. Landscape, portraits, product, architecture, and other commercial applications don't require a high frame rate. Not every camera is designed for everything under the sun.

@@npmgl Hi Norbert, that sound like a great way to bring slide images back to life. Thank you for that information, very useful.
Wow ... awesome results for nikon D850 ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi sanaatanviswa. It is still awesome in 2023 and beyond. Thank you for watching.
Hi Thomas, The Mamiya had amazing lens qualities just like the Nikons. I wish I could of kept it to add to my museum of kit. Thank you for watching.
Legendary camera... I wish I had one!
Thank you for watching. Old school indeed.
I only print what I believe to be exceptional pictures -- meaning not many :)
I would likely not keep my D500 so my investment in a D850 could be manageable.
UFB! I want to believe
I only now got the D850, the dynamic range is indeed impressive. I've never been this excited to work with RAW files. Of course my previous cameras were D70 and D300.. so this is quite the jump.
Hi, @blckwaterpark, you will be in awe at the detail in those raw files and the editing flexibility they give you. Thank you for watching.
Craig,
Your photo past is quite eccentric 👍
All the money you spent on developing black and white photos you could have purchased Sony .
I'm upgrading from a budget canon to Nikon D850 for the iso64 and 45mp .
Great photos 👍
Hi Basil, thank you, and thank you for watching. Pretty sure you will love and enjoy the D850.
Beautiful photos excellent video.
Hi Carlos, Thank you for watching.
I've a D800 and am interested in upgrading to the D850
If I was to go mirrorless I'd have to buy lenses. It's been suggested that I use my F mount lenses with the FtZ adapter but I might as well stay with DSLRS if that's the case
Hi Eltin, I entirely agree with your thoughts . Thank you for watching.
I love my D 850, inspires me to be creative.

Hi TJ, i used the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G. A superb all round lens. Thank you for watching.
For the reason staying on the DSLR camera platform and as also a Nikonian world since 2007 August and I think almost the same age liked 👍and subscribed.
There is definitely still a strong following for the DSLR format. Thank you for watching, liking and subscribing.
So when your out in the forest with the D850 do u hear music like on this video ? If so, I want this camera
Hi, It cannot play the music. But it can produce some very fine images. Thank you for watching.
I love my d850 and my d700
We're practically separated from birth. Same history with me, swap the D700 for a D300s and you have it. Love my D850, bloody heavy but it's a brick and has all the features you mention and that you need.

I have the D850 and a few other Nikons as well as the D700 and D3S. No reason for me to move on to Z as I have all the lenses I need and I like my results.. Will the Z make me better? No.
Hi Ed, very true and liking your own results matters. Thank you for watching.
It would be interesting you tell us how do you digitize your slides. Thank you so much.
Hi Thomas. I have not started that project yet. I will probably save that for retirement.
I give you credit for even telling your wife. I practice the art of “seamless integration”.
I must learn seamless integration. Thank you for watching.
@@craig.yates_photography4907
I don't use live view, I grew up with SLRs, so it is the viewfinder for me.
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 Thank you very much for your advise.

Ive used one and im affraid to move towards the d850. Do you also have that yellowish tint of images? Yellow/green? Please let me know
Hi Mario, I have not had a problem with any kind of colour cast you mention. I always shoot in Raw and hand process every image.

Great tip that, and the kit is not expensive. what light source do you use. Thank you for watching.
Hello, Chris I'm planning to buy my first camera at the end of this year or next year😅
My mind is already leaning toward d850, but most people recommend the mirrorless model
So I want to ask you If you buy a camera later this year or next year, will you choose the d850?😀
The disadvantage of the dslr camera is that it requires regular pin Calibration, and the mirrorless camera is that the price of the body and lens are still expensive, but the d850 quality of the picture looks really good, so I'm worried😅
@@craig.yates_photography4907 Thank you very much for your kind reply😁
Most people know that the d850 is a fantastic camera, but I was disappointed with the trend of the camera market these days, which recommends mirrorless😅
I thought that my choice was not wrong With your confident recommendation of d850😶
Of course, there is news that a new camera model will be released soon, and among the current mirrorless models, the quality of the picture of the Z9 is similar to that of the d850, but the price is too expensive😅
I hope the d850 will continue to be a masterpiece of DSLR cameras😉
Yes I remember the days of Kodachrome, I still have all my old dark room equipment in the closet and one roll of T-Max 100 thats been sitting in a drawer for years.
Hi fixitright. I wish I still had all my old dark room equipment, it would be nice to dabble with some old negatives again and create some prints. I am pretty sure there would be a good niche market for Kodachrome 64 to make a comeback. Thank you for watching.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 thanks for your reply great video too, I'm currently currently wanting to move away from my d750 24-megapixel, Improvement in resolution is a must but the low-light performance of my d750 I don't want to lose or make a trade off for resolution? @@fixitright9709 Ok, I very rarely use high ISO . The image in the video at ISO 1600 looks clean and detailed. settings up to 12000 ISO you need to apply increments of noise reduction, the images are still detail and look acceptable. Above 12000 ISO you start to suffer from loss of detail and colour changes.
@@craig.yates_photography4907 yes I try to keep my ISO no higher than 1600, but on my d750, 3200 is still reasonably clean if you can get good exposure good.
I still shoot with the D810 & might purchase the D850 for the flippy screen, DR, & focus stacking also, but I also shoot wildlife. But if my use case was like yours (not shooting wildlife) I would of went with the Z7II.

I can't consistently do focus stacking either!
Hi Patrick, thank you for watching. having played around with focus stacking I am getting more consistent results, however it is still dependent on the complexity of the shot.
I might agree to a lot your saying, though I doubt the dynamic range ist worth to mention, if coming form a D800, or D810...
Another reason to mention, for buying a D850, you forgot to mention ... you just want to own it. 😂❤😂

The camera will allow you to be a better photographer...
It certainly has a arsenal of features that will help you down the path of being a better photographer.
D810 is 5fps, D850 is 7fps and if you put on the grip up to 9fps.
The D850 was not designed to be a sports camera with a gagillion frames per second. Landscape, portraits, product, architecture, and other commercial applications don't require a high frame rate. Not every camera is designed for everything under the sun.
Because its a real camera
Probably the last of the truly real cameras. Thank you for watching.
