Having been a photojournalist for 52 years, I have pretty much used Nikon exclusively. From Nikon FTN to the current D850. there have been some fantastic upgrades by the company through the years. I really don't want to get into boring technical debates. The most important thing about photography is not how fast the eye is tracked by a sensor or how you can recover from a screwed up exposure. It's about the final image. Does it remind you of a long-lost lover? A favorite song? A special time in your life? does the picture stay with you for hours, days, and years? Though the Z8 is a technical marvel, the D850, in my opinion, looks more analog and organic than the lean, overly sharpened Z8. Yes, you have to work harder with the D850, but the final outcome (in my opinion) is worth it. Some of the greatest pictures in history were not very sharp, so younger photographers ... remember that.

And as a side benefit, the lenses are also a bit less expensive. My Nikon D7500 and D500 are more than adequate for most of my photographic needs.

I think the stark contrast between the D850 and the z9/8 is that the D850 was absolutely the best of the best across the board; there was no except for the ….
Z9/8 can’t say that - they are compromised in one of the most important areas - AF. If Canon and Sony had crappy AF, then z9/8 could take the crown from the D850, but they don’t, so they can’t. I am not spending that kind of coin for kit that has compromised functionality. Back to sleep, waiting on the Z”next”.

@@matsudakodo As in not top notch, best in class AF. I am not going to get into a debate of how good is good enough. I have zero experience with anything Z, so not talking from experience. While I am sure the Z’s have AF 10x better than my current camera, most “influencers” seem to conclude they are not quite up to the same level of performance as a good Sony or Canon. So, not paying top $ for less than top AF. My current camera still spits out stunning image quality with the aid of “RI” focussing, so I’m good for now. Next gen Z is when I may bite.

It's funny how when the D850 came out everyone raved over it and continued to for years after. Now, suddenly, it seems to be impossible to take a good photo with it. It also makes you wonder how it is that Ansel Adams' photos still look great as well as the photos of many talented portrait photographers over the years. You would think their photos would look like trash now. The truth is that if you were taking lousy photos with the D850, you will continue to take lousy photos with the Z8, Z9 or whatever. If you are a good photographer, you can use a Nikon F series with some black and white film and good vintage Nikon glass and take some wonderful photos.

People trot out this same tired analogy every camera release. Yes. We ALL know it’s as good today as it was on release. But the market has moved on. Horse and buggy is still viable - why don’t you take it to go shopping anymore?

    • @quicktastic
      @quicktastic Год назад +1

@@mattgranger You just made my point. If someone's 5 year old car is maintained and in great condition, you can use it to go shopping just fine. Your car doesn't become a 'horse and buggy' just because the new car has the latest tech. The fact is that the camera being used is quite far down on the list in determining whether a photo is going to be something special or not for the vast majority of camera users. If someone is not happy with their photography, buying a Z8 to replace their D850 (assuming it is functioning properly) is not going to fix that. If money is no object, then there is nothing wrong with going out buying the latest gear. It is interesting. Very few people though are really pushing their gear to the point where it will actually make much of a difference. Top level wildlife photographers get the most benefit from the advanced technology IMO.

Nice video Matt! I'm a Nikon user for 3 decades. The D850 was a great camera which shook the photo world with its abilities and build quality. It was a machine which stood out of the bunch! The Z8 doesn't do it. It is a downscaled Z9. Nothing special in its category concerning also the competition. I have 2 D850's plus some other full frame bodies. I was expecting a new sensor at least and a higher resolution, but no... A professional photographer will go for a Z9 straight because it is a dealbreaker also. The Z8 is a camera that for sure it is going to be used by pros but (Nikon) have in mind that the D850 was bought by a huge portion of highly skilled amateurs or pros who do fine art, landscape and other genres. It is hard for all of us to switch system if the camera hasn't anything special to offer. The Z8 also comes at a very high price. 1000 more than the D850 with a simpler design (no mirror and shutter) based on software development with cheaper manufacturing costs. (This applies to all brands). So they better be serious in the future... With 4000 thousand euros I would prefer to go for a GFX 50SII to get the benefits of a larger sensor. Powerful Autofocus is not the first thing for all the users. The only sirious camera in the mirrorless line of Nikon is the Z9. It is the Z8 also but it hasn't got 'star' to bring the people 'in'... I was waiting for the Z8 all this time but I wasn't impressed at all. If I would upgrade I would go for the Z9. The rest of the bunch is 'one more'.....

The advantages of the EVF, AF coverage and IBIS have been quite clear since long before the Z8 came along. I was rather hoping for seeing as well a comparison of IQ using the same lens on both cameras - particularly, I'd like to see top-notch F-mount primes such as the 105mm f/1.4E and the 28mm f/1.4E in such a test, since the 50mm f/1.4G is nowhere near those, let alone a state-of-the-art Z-mount 50mm f/1.2S. Even the 58mm f/1.4G is a lens full of character, but not exactly known for its sharpness. I understand your remark that your goal was to compare both systems, but USD 4000 is still quite an investment and many people will probably keep using the Z8 with F-mount glass they still have for a while - especially lenses such as the ones I've mentioned above, which have no Z-mount analog -, so in retrospect I still feel something is missing in this shootout.

@@gyozakeynsianism true, I saw these videos as well and I expect it to be the case based on IBIS alone, but how each AF system interacts with the lens is also important and a direct shootout comparison between the Z9 and the D850 using the same F-mount glass on both hasn't been done there either, as far as I remember. That would be useful to D850 owners (like me) who might be considering the jump to Z8 in the near future but for which the USD 4000 figure (about 50-60% more than that here in Brazil, btw) also bears a critical weight in the decision. Personally, as it stands I'd still wait for a cheaper, lighter, Expeed 7-equipped Z6 III to go mirrorless and keep the D850 I still love, also because the latter should drop in price considerably in the next weeks/months and I'm not sure that selling it will make up for the price difference by then.

Dear Matt. For the first time ever I may disagree with you. I have totally lost faith in the Z system. Didn't even realize it happened unconsciously, as I never reach for it anymore.
Operationally, despite many peoples claims that the Z focuses well I find it cumbersome. For any moving action I seldom use autofocus, so one of the real issues is the poor manually focusing ring. I find it impossible to use precisely or control. Just yesterday I forced myself to bring the Z9 to a marathon I was commissioned to shoot. I was like bringing a knife to a gunfight. The camera was too slow to respond and unable to be precisely controlled. Pulled out my back up D850 w of all things, the 85mm F/1.4 G lens, a lens I never liked, and got supreme control and stellar images. I always felt the color in the middle apertures was stellar, easily surpassing any Z lens, but as everyone else hails, not the sharpest tool in the shed. However, the images were tack, under moving conditions. So? I know this G lens in terms of sharpness to my mind has always been the dullest of the F mount Nikkors. But the images were sharp. And the color, the clients noticed that is stood out compared to most, if not all of the other published shooters whom were using mirrorless cameras of a wide range of brands. As others have also noticed, the color out the z lenses leaves something to be desired. In some ways Z lens color reminds me of rangefinder lenses from the 1940s and 1950s. I was asked back to shoot the August 24, 2023 Triathlon for the event and several personal individuals. The stand out color clearly contributed to the invite.
And I don't shoot this kind of thing normally ( High Fashion, Entertainment, Executive and Lawyer portraits and the occasional event ).
I will do a more head to head shoot out of the Nikkor 85mm F/1.4 G and the 85mm F/1.8 Z and send you the results. On the same camera, probably on the Z7II, as it is ever slightly better in image quality that the Z8 or Z9. About a 1/3 greater dynamic range. Barely noticeable, but is there. Snappier, richer images. D850 has the same dynamic range as the Z7II.
Am not discounting the many, many advantages of the Z mount Nikkors display. For me, most noticeably, the general absence of that horrible blue violet casts and edges, the sharp performance wide open, and the apparent, though not sure real, constrastier overall look.

Resolution is WAY overrated. I was debating getting the R5 (45 MP) or R6 II (24 MP) last fall. I've been shooting as a pro for 18 years mostly with the 1D Mark III (10 MP) and then got the 5D Mark IV and EOS R (30 MP). I wasn't too happy about going down to 24 MP but wondered if it mattered. I did a comparison with the R6 II and R5 by upscaling the R6 II files to 45 MP using Adobe Camera Raw (most people don't realize you can do this).
I then overlayed the files in PS and did a "blind" comparison of the layers at 100% zoom on a 5K monitor. I mostly couldn't tell which was which (was about 50/50). This was using Canons best RF primes and zooms for portraits and landscapes.
Then I used the Adobe Camera Raw/LR "Enhance Super Resolution" feature on the R6 II files, and output to 45 MP. Again I did a "blind" comparison in PS at 100% zoom and guess what. 9/10 I picked the R6 II files as being sharper and more detailed. I sent these comparisons to a designer friend without telling him which was which layer and he too picked the R6 II files as being sharper and more detailed 9/10 times. We both have about 30 years between us in photo and design.
I've done the same with R6 vs A7IV files (20 vs 33 MP) and got the same results. The lens and AF sharpness is more important than advertised resolution.
And btw, I've had billboard prints for advertising printed on city buses that came from an 8 MP (1D Mark IIN) camera and they looked PHENOMENAL. Things like dynamic range and AF reliability are way more important than resolution (which is why I love the R6 Mark II because it's the best in it's class for these things, arguably the best all around for AF).
