As a 68 year old who is a new subscriber AND a new photographer trying to learn some of the art and find some good equipment, I want to say I really value your reviews and your narrative on photography. I appreciate the fact that you back them up with the downloadable files you offer. I inherited a D70S from my late photographer/sister, picked it up one day, caught the bug, and now I'm trying to sort out my next steps on equipment and education; your videos really help.
I don't know why, but I am still amazed every time I see one of you guys videos. The quality of the video as well as the content is phenomenal as always. Keep up the great work Team Fro!
Super detailed and thorough review. I can't believe this level of quality (HD, Drone shots, Full Res jpgs, multiple cameras/go pro view) is *free* on RUclips - very comprehensive. I'm sure an insane amount of effort went into this production. Great job Jared (and team)!
Hey Jared. Just upgraded to the D500 yesterday and will be running it through the paces this weekend. Impressed as hell so far! Great informational vid here man. Thanks!
I think you wanna buy this cam if you are shooting sports and nature. If I wanna get best results in portrait photography, I think I'd to take a full frame body. But, still interesting to see it above iso 4000.. But- as he said, the D(n). - Bodies are in their own iso-league..
Have been a fan of yours for a few years Jared and even chatted with you once at Alan's. I have to say, in my opinion, this is one of the ABSOLUTE BEST video reviews I've seen ANYWHERE! You out did your great work! Thanks!!
You definitely nailed this review. Haven't found a better one yet of the D500. Action shots, portrait, wide angle, motion, it's all there and it's perfectly shown and explained. I'm now definitely looking at this camera as a follow up for my current D7000.
I shoot my D800E for Architecture, Landscape, Wedding Ring Shots, Portraits. I am adding the D500 to my bag for Wedding, Portraits and when I want to 'zoom' in tight on Landscape. Thanks for the review!
This was absolutely the best review of this camera I have seen, I also think this is one of the best videos you have done to date! Excellent work! Love your channel!
Full frame vs D500: decision is simple. If you buy full frame camera you'll have to buy all the expensive fx lenses whereas with d500 you can use dx and fx lenses and get x1.5 times reach in all lenses.
For wildlife, real deal fast shooting like hummingbirds, or the real fast sports action this is the very best camera on the market even today on April 2020. The autofocus of the D500 is perfect. There is nothing like this on the market. If you work with real fast action buy the camera and be happy! Don't bother yourself with the mirrorless mania, full frame things... Buy the right lenses and the D500 will deliver every time when you most need it. Portraits, shows, concerts, studio work are too easy for this camera.
Finally a review that actually shows the D500 being used and showing it capabilities for portrait work. Nice smooth backgrounds and sharp photos on the head shots and portraits! Great shots!
Best review of the D500 I've seen so far. Being a landscape photographer utilizing wide angle lens this camera is not for me. But for a sports/wildlife camera it looks great. Thanks
Another great and thorough review! I've got my D500 for two weeks now, and am absolutely loving it! I've also bought a few new lenses for it (one of which is 200/2!!), and will start to take some sports photos.
I don't remeber why I subscribed to you 4 and half years back, but videos like these remind why. Production quality is literally top notch, the editing and cinematography alone warrant this channel being top in its class, but the information, the examples, the charisma in the video make it that much better. Thanks fro, Todd, and Stephen. you guys nailed it with this one.
A question 4 u is it limited 2 record more than 30 minutes in total or is it limited to record 30 minutes at a time ? 4 example i wanted 2 record 3 hours of footage how will i have to do it ????
Really impressed with the way you have done this review, one of your best videos yet. Informative, detailed and grounded in real world requirements. keep up the great work.
Finally a serious Nikon body that doesn't cost as much as the D5 does. I am most probably getting one later this year and honestly would be doing the same even if the D750 was coming out now - maybe the AF is the biggest selling point for me. Edge to edge coverage? Cross type points at the farthest left and right of the frame? F**k yeah, even the top end of the previous generation bodies didn't have that. Maybe the lack of a built-in flash is a bit of a let-down (I'd love to have one for off-camera flash control), but it's understandable from Nikon's point of view - they want to push the sales of the SB-5000 and the wireless controller.
I shoot canon but I have a few buddies that shoot nikon. I'm not switching systems but would love to have both. I was undecided about which nikon dx to get. I think this one is the one. absolutely great review.
Fro, I just got back from shooting a Golf Tourny on memorial day. One recommendation I have is get in front when driving, I mean really in-front. I typically shoot about 20 feet in front and 7 to the side. Yes i'm at risk, but you get some really nice shots. I shoot full frame with a 70-200 for tee shots. Also with my silent shoot mode, I get the back-swing as well.
Love watching/listening to your videos ect, have both d500/d4s and they both do the business as far as I'm concerned, keep up the good work Jared, all the best from across the pond.
I've been following you for a few years and you're awesome! You've helped me get started in my career by giving me great knowledge and the confidence I needed to begin my journey. The best review I've seen so far! Many many thanks, sir! I do have a question though. This is becoming to be known as the "wild life and sports camera." What makes this less of portrait camera than the D750? I am debating on which one to upgrade to. TIA
Super job with tihs detailed video. This looks like the definitive DX camera. Have a D300s currently and still loving it, except for sensor size and ISO noise.
best D500 review ever. Thanks ! My choice is done for my next Nikon. Tokina is an excellent lens. I've got it on my D7200. Put it a 5.2 to get the sharpest images.
One of the biggest things I hate about photography is the marketing lingo. "Pro" and "Flagship" cameras are just that to people until the next one comes out. Then they're semi pro or amateur. All of it is marketing for the camera companies and something for owners of said cameras to tell others in order to boost their own egos. The pros, semi-pros and amateurs are the ones BEHIND the camera, doesn't matter what you shoot. I do have a d500 btw. It's a camera with some nice features.
Great review! Super thorough! One thing I may suggest. The visor you wore during the your talking points did cause for a difficult situation on lighting but it may have been beneficial to use a fill light camera right or bring the light a little further in front to fill in your left eye. Anyway keep up these reviews!
From 5:54 onwards, the autofocus points are evenly spaced and fills almost the entire frame. This is all I need and points should be spaced evenly in such configurations so that we can get to the areas in the frame to focus. No other placements and gimmicks. Finally the camera manufacturers understands.
Thanks for this review although it’s a few years old now. But would you still recommend buying this camera now ? For example it’s as expensive as a Fuji x-t4. I don’t do video and have a feeling the D500 is still superior over the x-t4. Is that true?
Gotta say this is definitely an awesome video edit. I wish all video reviews were edited lit this. the intro is definitely the best I've seen from all your videos. looked like something out of vh1 or MTV. 👏
That was the best d500 review ever tons of information.. Thanks jared i was considering buying the D810 as you know its full frame but now i have to rethink about that
Easily one of the best videos you have made to date. Great review as always. I seriously don't understand why you got so many thumbs down already. The internet turns people into fucking trolls. Good shit bro.
Great review - mirrors everything I've seen so far with mine as well. I really think there's more to be heard about the metering issues regarding the high end highlights in some scenarios, but since you shoot RAW I'm not even sure you've noticed. ;) I do a lot of mass sports and event photo stuff with a high reject or non-purchase rate, and just can't handle processing that amount of RAW files - so the highlight thing is a little frustrating at the moment. The camera is spectacular though. I got a D7200 to up the sensor IQ over my D300 which was getting killed lately, but this camera finally solved all the issues I had every time I picked up or touched the D7200 vs. D300 in spite of its nearly-decade-old age, it handles so well I quickly knew I wasn't going to be sticking w/ 7200.
Juan Carlos OH YEAH!! Love mine. The autofocus is still above anything else on the market, even the EOS-1DX mkiii because the autofocus goes from edge to edge. Simply AMAZING!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
I bought mine 5 months ago and its a beast. Battery life is at above 1000 shots. Ergonomics are awesome, and you have a lot of buttons for fast setting changes.
@@jeepjoseph9036 Wow. You're a trooper. D3500 would be much harder to get good wildlife shots with. Slower AF, tiny buffer, no AF fine-tuning. D500 would be much easier to get good shots with.
"Best of the best with honor, s... on it." Ha! Caught that! Love your real world reviews, man. You and your crew have outstanding production value. Also, RAW talk has become a weekly "must watch" when I'm doing chores around the house. Loving all the content. Keep it up!
Getting better with each review Fro,m Keep it up! About your comment that the D500 won't match the quality of the D5, I just don't find that to be true. In fact, I recently just sold my D5 for a D500 because I was unhappy with some of the dynamic range and the AA filter was really reducing some of that sharpness I love. I would argue they are both pretty equal. With each having a few strengths over the other. The D5 for anything ISO 2500 and up, the D500 for that extra DX reach and better low ISO images.
The D5 smashes the D500 into the ground all day any day. The "dynamic range" bitching that DPreview started is nitpicking at best. The D500 is no a D5 replacement in any way shape or form.
I love these reviews. A review should be done when working with it, not just some test charts photos, to really see what's good and what's not. Great channel!
I couldn't help but notice the wrong audio clip for the hitting at ~2:00 min mark. Irons don't sound like that and just threw me off. I would have used the nice heavy sound that actually come from an iron just a personal opinion. Never the less I love the content!
Great review! Are you still using the D500 is it holding up as well now that your out of the honeymoon period? I am so close to pulling the trigger on one - I have extremely pushed my D3400 to its limit and am torn between the D7500 and D500.
Hi man! First, let me say your videos are incredible and I've been binge wachting your whole channel! But let me ask you something. I'm into portraiture and leaving my Canon T6 for a new system. Eventually I do landscape and some video, just for fun. I am trying to decide between Fuji X-T2 and Nikon D500. Honestly, I am leaning towards Fuji. But it feels like every time I think I've made my decision and I'm reaching out my arm to get it, I read some opinion like "the D500 low light performance is better" or "Nikon's focus system is amazing" and automatically take a step back. My plan is to pick the body and one or two primes, like 35mm and 50mm. Which one do you think I should get?
I shoot a lot of high school sports and I bought the D500 to replace a D600. I am totally loving the D500. Focus is quicker and the images at high ISO are better. For basketball I am frequently shooting at ISO 4000 and the images are great. I was hesitant to make the move in part because of the price of the camera but I am glad I did. Please, nobody tell Jared that I shoot sports in JPEG.
Hey jared, im a film maker invested in the nikon dx system. Would you recommend me selling my current setup with the nikon d7200 and going full frame or do you recommend i go for the d500 😊
Fro knows that this is a pretty decent camera, but a little pricey. I recently had to send my D800 on for a focus issue and was in need of a camera. I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend $2000 on a crop sensor, but I went for it and to be honest it's a really awesome camera. My D800 was out of focus for a few months, so having something this fast and in focus all the time was awesome for me personally. I am not s pro, but I do like the fact that it shoots 10fps, I recently got into shooting my kids sports activity and even when the D800 was shooting well it just wouldn't focus well for me, but the D500 rocks. So Fro knows and I love his videos, he seems to get a lot of slack because he seems to advertise a lot in his videos, but the bills have to be paid. Fro do you do any real time classes ???
Hey Jared, with you saying it's the best "all-around," I'm curious if you feel this is a camera worthy of things like weddings or landscape. It seems like it's geared more toward sports/wildlife (improved shutter speed for crop sensor, etc). Your thoughts?
Great Review. I have d5300 and mainly shoot landscape. But from past few months i am considering wildlife seriously. So Im torn between d500 and d750 due to its versatility. But then again Nikon has much better lens options in fx lineup. Please help me out for my next upgrade.
I'm looking to transition into Real Estate photography and landscape with the occasional nature or action shot or two in there. Would you still recommend the D500 as the prices come down or would you recommend the D750/D810 or something else? Thank you in advance!
As you say, there really ISN'T the amount of difference between the D500 and D5 that the price differential might suggest. The D5 is no good for me personally, however much I might like to own one, because it's simply too big and heavy for my small hands. Thanks for the D500 Nikon!
Hi Jared, thank you for providing such great videos about photography. You've been my "guide" into the world of photography since 2011. I want to ask you something. I have a rebel T3i, which is getting really old and it's giving me some troubles. I have a nice budget (around 1500€, 1600$) and I'd like to do a lot of things, but of course I can't. I thought about replacing my old rebel T3i with a newer 7D mark II or 6D, which are getting quite cheap. Now the main problem is that my lens setup is not so great. I have a 24mm EF-S f/2.8 STM that I love, the classic 50mm 1.8 and the samyang 85mm 1.4. I really need some advice. Should I buy a new camera (and if yes, which one between the two) or should I invest more on lenses (I was thinking to a 50 1.4 and a 70-200 f4)? Thanks for the answers!
Man I couldn't keep waiting for the D500. I went ahead and bought the 750. So far I love it, but I haven't shot any sports yet. Man I hope the 750 can keep up!

Great review! Are you still using the D500 is it holding up as well now that your out of the honeymoon period? I am so close to pulling the trigger on one - I have extremely pushed my D3400 to its limit and am torn between the D7500 and D500.
Finally was waiting for this for so long amazing work
enjoy.
Agreed, fabulous review. Drone shots, videography, and standing on a Pelican case - ha! #epic.
Love these reviews, great job all around.
thank you.
Love this not just because of the Nikon review. I Get to shoot a charity golf event next weekend. Nice to see what kind of shots work and which don't.
Really good review. And, I love your use of the drone.
Great camera, it has sharper, more detailed images than a D5 and a better dynamic range at low iso!
This camera will be my next one to buy ! Thanks for the awesome review ! But which lens did you use for the shoot ?
Nice review.
Gona buy that fantastic camera.
By the way love it when your hair is in the picture of ur gopro:)
Just got a used D500 and 500 5.6 at Allens camera last week :) march 2024..
Great vid. & man that guy is good with the bouncy ball whack.
Love the Real World Reviews. Nice work crew!
Hey jared, im a film maker invested in the nikon dx system. Would you recommend me selling my current setup with the nikon d7200 and going full frame or do you recommend i go for the d500 😊
If you make movies Canon seems the way to go.
Yea unfortunately i think it is, but i wonder if its worth selling all my current lenses and bodies just to switch over :/
Fro knows that this is a pretty decent camera, but a little pricey.
Fro you killed it on this one! Great job!
Best review ever! I love these real world reviews.
True on the FX options.
The hat matches the pants well done sir!
Well done.
Great video, love the not so subtle placement of the Fro Bag.
Well I use it lol.
Wish I needed a new one but my Crumplers are going strong, great content, much appreciated
Keep up the great work : )
