Hello photographers,Flavio from Italy here, yeah I'm a spaghetti guy... :))) Ok I was a pro photographer (reporter) in the years 80/90's usually working with Nikon F2 ( I still have 2 bodies) 35 mm f1.4 ,55 mm f.1.2. 85 mm f.1.8 H series,135mm f.2.5 ais few zoom like 80-200 f2.8 and so on.... I still have all those great lenses... I restart with photgraphy 2 years ago with an old Nikon D3,great camera bought used with 300k shots, just to see if I could back as pro...I've got some job and in the next 2or 3 months I'll open my own studio. In the meantime, I've bought a Nikon D3x and a Nikon D4 used ofcourse... a 28/70 f2,8 nikon and a 70/200 f2.8 VR, both for 1000 eu. You know what? I don't care about billions pixel, with this 2 cameras I worked frorm Wedding cerymony to the street photography or sport reportage... Resoults??? The video here says everything I guess... I've bought the D3x for 400 eu shutter count of 45.000 looks still like new,and a D4 with 193.000 shots for 800 eu total 1.200 euros. Ridicolous price for the quality of the files I have in any situation, Better the D3x in studio and great the D4 in all situations. Question is it worth to spend 6000 eu for one ML camera when I can have a great resoults with 1.200 and 2 cameras? Thank you and sorry for my bad english. P.s. Vahagraphy, thx for your great videos...

Was immediately attracted to this video and it didn't let me down. I would never have thought that a 14 year old camera - although a professional on like the D3 - could compete with the latest top model from Nikon. And if you consider the ability of the photographer behind these cameras there is no point to change all the time your gear and upgrade it to the latest model. It confirms me to stick with my D850 and spend more time learning to take better pictures. Well done, thank you!

It’s not the d3 , but the d3x. It was a revelation. A lot was spoken about the the price , but Rut image quality was a jumó. Clearly he is showing it under ideal circumstances. If you are recovering shadows etc the D3x will fall apart faster than say the d850 (don’t know about the Z9 that is not the image quality too dog from Nikon the d850 and the z7 ii are better)

I have to admit that I prefer the D3X files better. There is something sexy about that warmer tone. That said, I am assuming that the Z9 color rendition is closer to reality. That D3X sensor really stacks up nicely compared to today's sensor technology! I'm really impressed!

Great comparison...I prefer the D3x files myself, perhaps I'm biased since I still use a D3x! For me, 16 to 24 mp is the sweet spot. I simply don't need 45mp and I don't shoot birds. The D3x simply renders wonderful files...very artsy like the D4! You've just shown us that we don't need to keep upgrading our gear and DSLRs are far from dead.

This was so interesting, thanks for making this comparison! The Z9 seems to have more accurate white balance overall, but the D3x, just like the other DSLR flagships of that era, just seems to create more depth and “pop” which is arguably just as important as accurate color balance!

By construction, a lifetime with the D3X. For image quality, even more so. The first thing you notice, indeed, is that there is a warmer tone to the D3X. But what most strikes me is the variety and richness in the colors of the D3X. If I had a Z9 I would sell it to buy another D3X.

  • @tracyleepitre6079

Wow, what a terrific video ...thank you!! I preferred the D3x colors better in all photos including when you set the WB to 5800 on both cameras. In the tap and stick photos in particular the D3x warmer colors also showed better depth rendition and detail. The only place were I liked the Z9 better was with the closeup of the fence where at all ISO settings the Z9 was much sharper. I loved the rendering of all the D3x photos you showed at the end! It would seem that the D3x is best suited to an artist, and the Z9 is best suited to a working professional.

The color rendition of the D3 series is unbelievably great. It is also better than the Nikon Df which has a D4 sensor. I don't know why Nikon abandoned this great color science.

I have owned a number of Nikon cameras over the years with my last a D500 purchased a few years ago and has proved itself with excellent results for pet and animal photography. Recently I got a chance to branch out with the business and decided a full frame camera was needed so started looking at the Nikon mirrorless cameras. The Z9 caught my attention but at over £5000 plus lenses I felt that was a big jump for a relatively small part of my business. Lo and behold I found this video and what a great video it is. It told me about all the things I needed to hear and see. Guess what! My full frame camera is going to be the best D3X I can find as it presses all the right buttons and my Canon A3 printer is going to get busier. Thank you for creating this video as I feel you have saved me a lump of cash and maybe stopped me from over complicating my life with buying a camera that offers probable far more capability than I need. All the best.

Well thank you for the nice comments. Hope it works out. But also keep in mind you are buying older tech. Also, the low light performance is not that great. tracking on moving subjects will not come close to a Z system. Finding a good condition body with no issues will be a challenge because of the time past. 14 years. These samples are before any edits. I'd say if you had to get something newer and FF and still stick with DSLR. try a D850, its newer. more pixels. more advanced camera.

I am not one to chase technology (I am old school having started photography over 40 years) and in my teaching photography I stress to my students that chasing technology is unnecessary. This video proves my point. I have had my D3x for a few years now and I am still in love with it.
It certainly is not designed for high ISO or for speed but for studio/portrait and landscape work, which is what the camera was designed for it is a beast.
Thank you for this comparison, I have only just come across it.

Thx for this comparison. As a long time Nikon user I spent years and years before changing from F to D, always in search of better image quality. Finally I felt arrived with my D850s and the fact is amazing that you can put on almost any Nikon F lens to them and it simply works. Am I doing this? Not really but I could. Changing for D to Z would be a huge step for me. Not ready at this point especially after watching your video. Finally the results are counting not the gear you are using. From the artistic point of view on photography, you wouldn't judge about the paint brush of the artist but about his pictures. Thx again. Greetings from Switzerland.

Simple, snap a picture, same settings, take the body off , mount the other body, take a picture. since im using the 400, im basically doing the opposite, instead of taking the lens off the tripod, im taking the camera off the lens. but next time around I will change a few things up, also shoot the Z9 on iso64 like many have mentioned they want to see.

The D3x files seem to have a broader and more natural colour pallette, with an almost 3-dimensional "pop" (comparable to my D3s and D700) , than the Z9., to my eyes at least. That said, the Z9 files ain't too shabby, but would need more post processing to bring out their best.

My first full-frame camera was the D3X, purchased five years ago. I still have it! Superb camera that is only limited in certain respects, the main one being its lack of high ISO performance. If you have plenty of light, or even if you are a long-exposure landscape photographer using a tripod, it's superb. I also own a D750, a D3 and a D4S. In terms of image quality and colour rendering, it's still hard to beat the D3X.

In the first shot I really even couldn’t tell a visible resolution advantage on the Z9. I’m sure the Z9 can be tweaked a bit more to look as good as the D3X, but straight out of camera the D3X is very impressive!

Yes I was very surprised. But let me say. With some tweeaks the power of the Z9 file with pull ahead. As far as resolution, if I did this same test with a wider lens, maybe landscape, then you will see a clear advantage. Using a super tele here is probably not the best to compare that. and as far as low light, well. hehe. you know. that said the D3X is a keeper and will use this camera even in today's times.

Confirmed my thoughts on the 3X its an amazing camera had mine since it came out and got it for a bargain price, iam a pro and shoot Phase iq160 and have every Nikon from D3 to D6
and have not gone to the Z as yet , i still use the 3X on commercial shoots as it is just as good as the iq160 and far lighter, the big down side is getting a D3X repaired by Nikon as the parts now are not available as i just had mine repaired by Nikon 2 months wait and a massive bill 500 US to repair a black screen , and was told don't expect any more repairs on it, so hope to still use it till it stops, thanks for your side by sides to confirm it cuts it today and does exactly what a camera should do shoot stills.

I think the white balance out of camera is more pleasing on the D3X right out of the camera but nothing a bit of white balance adjustment can't correct. The Z9 obviously is going to offer sharper images with its higher resolution, noise reduction is personal preference but you can obviously eliminate it if desired with either camera. The Z9 obviously has much larger ISO range but the D3X to this day is still an amazing camera and usable today it just shows you how great Nikon cameras are regardless the decade. Entertaining video, Thx for sharing - Jeff

Interesting contrast in colors from the D3x and Z9. The D3x looks so warm and rich and the Z9 cooler temperature. I wish you had injected one additional camera into the mix. That would be your trusty D850. This would bring the megapixels range on a comparable basis to the Z9. It may also rule in the fact that the DSLR provides a warmer temperature? Thanks for this video. Excellent video.
This video is a demonstration of what I think about the photography industry, sensors have evolved little in recent years, the evolution was only in the speed of focus and processing, the industry has to survive and does what it can, and I hate having to pay for a camera that makes 8k video if I don't even like video, I'm a photographer and I like to take photographs and that's why it's going to be very difficult for me to buy a camera without a mirror, I like to think about it every time I press the shutter, maybe because I was from the time that, in addition to focusing, I had to calculate all the parameters of the camera.

Finally got one for 800 bucks. A bit high but 10k shutter and in mint condition. The rubbers still shine. Must be used only in a studio I guess but 10k shutter is crazy imo. Will test it against my Z5 tomorrow because they have the same resultion but I will get the same results I guess. Did some test shots and at high ISO settings and there is noise but nothing more different than my D3s. Think that most criticism back then had to do with the insane high price. 8000 bucks which translates in todays money in 12000 bucks or something.

The 24 megapixel sensor in my d750 produces that quality image you mentioned, 'cinematic look' the only thing I noticed mainly between the two is it almost appeared as though to d3x had more dynamic range, highlights are a little more blown on the z9, they're also appeared to be more noise on the z9 in the Dark Shadows, but you would have to do more significant cropping to really see the difference, large and quality prints would show the difference, be that good or bad...

The D3x holds it's own against the spectacular-new-kid-on- the-block Z9. It shows just how little photographers really need the extra pixels (except for large crops). It should be noted that the much older camera is using less number of pixels per mm, but larger light-gathering pixels. I prefer the warmer colours of the D3x, but of course the Z9 can easily match the warmth during editing stages (or pre-dial in settings and for jpegs to get those warmer images at time of shooting). A big plus for me with the D3x is that it has ability to shoot Nikon Tiff files. The Z9 is the first Nikon pro body to not include Tiff. A great side by side comparison, with the main big advantages of the Z9 being speed.

Could you soon make a RUclips comparising:
    a) the 2 best-sellerzoom-lenses NIKON 2.8/70-200 VR, (f and z-mount)! - and
    b) between the new Nikon NIkkor Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VRZ and the 2 PRO-fix lenses 24mm and a 200mm? Just to see where the differences are beside the bokeh and (most likely) the weakness at the border, especially when taking pics with 200mm.
