Just bought a D4 with 41000 clicks and in near mint condition for under a grand and will keep it until I go to my grave.... Looking back and wishing I'd never sold my Olympus OM 1,2,4TI, CLASSICS
Ken, thanks for this. I’ve been at Photographer since my teens, which means the 80s. I have had a lot of ups and downs financially and made some mistakes in selling gear to pay rent. The cameras that I regret selling the most are my Nikon FE, FM2, Leica Minilux, Yashica T4, and Contax T2. I’m about to buy an XT5, and I hope you do a review of it!
I don't sell my cameras because each offers something special. So yeah, that means I have a lot of cameras. But they are now like family and I love everyone of them.
In my country I saw a guy on a local used market store asking how much he should ask for a Plaubel Makina 670 6x7 medium format rangefinder film camera, with the usual Nikkor 80mm F2.8. He was thinking around $1000. If I were a bastard and had the money I would have gotten it in a heartbeat. Of course others told him about the true value of the camera $2500-3000. He got it from his grandpa and it was in pristine condition. What a jewel
I am about to go back to shooting Nikon DSLRs and sell off 5 of my 6 Fuji X cameras to pay for a D850, The Fujis I have already decided to hang on to is [yes] my X-H1, idk, maybe ill keep my XPro2 too. Something about the X-H1 that tells me to hang on to it with both hands other than it feels so right in my hands and is a great camera, and the Xpro2 is a Solid, comfy and smooth operating camera as well... Either way I have always had an eye or feel of quality gear to hang on to and the two Fuji X camera I mentioned and the D850 I agree fits that bill and ones I know I will be happy with for years to come.
Very good list for general photographic purposes, but if you are a portrait shooter then the D700 is the #1 never sell. I am dual wielding a pair myself.
I've been hearing nothing but godrays coming from people about this body.. plus this angry photographer.. whom knows his shit.. It's true.. I've shot with medium format and all the press high end gear.. this thing is the tits. It's worthy of worship. :) This is after three days.. I bought one.. finally.. mostly thanks to Ken here..
HI I have a D1H . I really like it . The battery EN-4 is the older rechargeable Ni-MH type . Do you know of a company that makes a lithium replacement battery for it ?
You are 100% right. The cameras you listed I agree completely. The Pentax 6×7 was unbelievable, the balance and feel. Just great! The images stunning. I loved that 105. I would sell my house before selling my 850. I shot with a Nikon F with standard prism , beautiful camera. I had a black & chrome body, and used a gossen luna pro, great days. Thanks for letting me go down memory lane.
My never ever sell list... FG, F3, FE2, D700, D750, oly 35RC, Oly Pen EE s, Ricoh 500 GX, Yashica 35 Electro, Nikon AW100. They all offer something unique and most of them aren't worth an awful lot of money so I'm not tempted to sell them. I also use a sony rx100 iv for a pocket camera when I'm out with my kids but if something just as pocketable comes along with a bigger sensor and better ergonomics I'm trading in that sucker.
I live on a modest fixed income and have truly enjoyed my two Nikon D300 DSLRS. I use MF Nikkor 20f3.5 and 24f2.8 ais lenses plus a 200 f4 ai, that I also use on my Nikon F and F5. When I see something truly special, I pull out my Linhof 617s Technorama and Fujica GW690. After 50 years of photography, I've settled on these cameras. I won't sell them. I used to think of cameras as just tools. Now they are artifacts of my soul. In my advancing years ("I'm not dead yet"!Monty Python reference) I have learned to be content. I enjoy your video, not because I want more gear, but because it is a celebration of excellence. I am happy for all photographers who obtain the cameras of their dreams and use them in a way that keeps them timeless. God bless us and our cameras, each and every one.🌿📷

Man in a camera shop 50 years ago 😱 recommended Chinon CE-4 35mm SLR, Vivitar 75-205 macro + Ricoh 50mm f/1.4. Over time added battery grip, range of Cokin filters, couple of flash units. I have an X-T4 and I would never sell it, I bought all the camera cage equipment I could until it stopped being produced and it’s everything I need. I would never sell it as to me it’s the golden camera on the Fuji X-T lineup. Has a battery grip, has a flippy screen, sensor is just right and has ibis. Plus it has dials like all other previous models which I love. Would never sell would never upgrade unless they make a better version of the X-H cameras or if I had enough money for a GFX 100 🤞
Didn’t think I would have any on your list. But I have Nikon F4s and the X-H1. Bought the X-H1 brand new for like $700- $750 (no grip) cause of your recommendation. I really like it, thanks! The F4s was given to me and it’s still pretty damn mint. Great camera!

I can tell you I have had my D4 for 2 years now and I haven't found a sport or event situation that I felt that the D4 was slow or that I needed a D4s to capture something over the D4. My upgrade off the D4 would be maybe Z9. The D500 is a baby D5 and the D4 is the last of the "Tank" like Flagship Pro DSLR bodies. Buying the D4s for me would be redundant with owning the D4 currently.
I bought a D700 last year for under 500$ and it had less than 3000 shutter clicks. I LOVE mine. I have much more expensive cameras but I find myself using the D700 quite often. So far I only have the 50mm f2.8 lens and with that simple set up I get great results. Once there is a vaccine for Covid I plan on buying more Nikon glass.
@@Spiritbro77 the images from it are sublime, you don't need to wait to the end of covid19 to get lenses buy from your local store and you don't have one then ask your fellow photographers who they use and trust. @@craighughes1986 I buy my lenses online. I am waiting because at the moment I can't get out and do much photography so they would just be lying around. I care for my elderly mother and a sister with MS so I can't take any chances with Covid. Haven't left the house for anything other than groceries in months. I hope you are staying safe!
The Leica M9 is the king of “do not sell/timeless” category (if you fix the sensor corrosion issue). That camera when fed with the right light, it produces images that can hardly be match by any other camera.
Ted Shields I wished that too before I got my M9-P (the only reason why I bought it) but then I had to realize that the 1.3x crop really works fine, the 21mm Super-Angulon 1:4 works superbly on the M8, a 50mm Summicron that becomes a little closer comes also in handy in most situations, then there is the 35mm which becomes the normal lens (o.k. that is a little sad). A 135mm is also very useful on the M8. The ISO performance of the M8 is about the same as on the M9 (the adjustment is not that fine so you can’t set 800), the M8 feels snappier in operation and writing the files to the card, the batteries last also a little longer.
Dear Ken, how do you deal with humidity and taking care of cameras and more important the lens? I live in deepest darkest Kernow in southwest UK, it be a damp place at time and i suffer with mold inside the lens. Is there a efficent way of getting rid of mold or are they fooked..? Pray tell thy thoughts master ken
Fujifilm X-T4 is the odd-one-out in this list, becuase it was introduced to market only in February 2020, so probably not many people own it. Who whould sell it after just 2/3 months? :P
Sir, would you still recommend buying the D500 today? I was thinking of buying a used US model if I can find it at a good price, and then slowly buying some FX lenses until maybe a year or two reveals more Nikon Full Frames. I am looking to use it as a travel camera (with the Tamron 18-400), and like taking photos of architecture (will need a very wide lens), people, and scenic views.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Thx, Ken. I have the old MLU 6x7 and the full compliment of lenses. Difficult to focus with the existing viewfinder, so got the eyepiece magnifier and use the distance scale on the lenses much more.
Ken, thanks for this different way of talking about cameras. Any opinion on the Nikon D800? Bought it a few years ago secondhand in superb condition (about a 1000 exposures) and I'm still really happy with it. It was my upgrade from a D7000, therefore from dx to fx. Wish you a nice day.
The GFX 50R is down to 3000 Euros lightly used and the 50mm 600-1000. But I'm just an amateur and I like my T3 but I thought I'd try a larger sensor size and higher res. camera. The comparison GFX 50R vs. Sony AR IV and good lenses seems to be firmly in favour of the GFX, except that one can get good cheap Tamron zooms for the Sony. Is there a GFX 50R II on the horizon? But I think I'll stick with the T3 and get the Pro3 or T4 as a second camera and rather get more glass for it, like the 80mm macro.
I’ve got both the 50R and the A7r4. The IQ is excellent on both but the 50R gives a subtly different look because of its larger sensor. However there is a huge difference in the way these cameras are used in practice. The 50R will slow you down. You will find yourself considering your shots more carefully with it in your hands. For some people, myself included, the slow approach helps me to get better images.
@@Muchtoobizy That is true, though I do like some speed because of street. Probably the XT4 and GFX 50R is the best combination. Not quite sure Sony is really worth the money. Their advantage is Tamron.
I agree with the majority of your choices except the Nikon F4. I had a lot issues with it . Ergonomically it wasn't balanced and autofocus was hit and miss. I would take 3 MF F3's over it. I actually replaced it with a "dark side" Canon 1V. Night and day improvement. F5 don't bother.
Thank you for the advice in the XH1 (glad I got it new on sale). I can say I have the xpro1 and believe this is a 'never sell' Camara also because of the nice sensor making great Images plus the range finder style.
I bought a new XH1 with grip when they were on sale in Aust recently & have it packed away for a 50th b’day present for myself. I was starting to have second thoughts after listening to the talk of it’s sensor being too outdated & was thinking I should have held out for an XT3 when the price drops (I can’t quite manage the entry price for a XT4). You have brightened my day & helped me believe I might have done the right thing by grabbing the XH1 when I did. I don’t buy the latest & greatest when they come out. I buy when the price is right & enjoy them for a long time. I can’t wait to start using it. 😊
@@jukeboxjohnnie That's great to hear Jonathan. I hope I enjoy it as much as you. I always find that it's the handling that makes the biggest difference with a camera. My eyes usually can't spot differences between sensors but if I enjoy the feel and ergonomics of a camera, it makes the camera more pleasurable to use.
I sure enjoy your videos, Ken. I suppose everyone has their own list, but I'll never sell my Nikon F3, F5, or D1, and I probably wouldn't sell my Kodak DCS760 either.
Hi man! I'd like to have your opinion since I'm not really sure which one to get. I'm torn between xh1 and xt3, these days, secondhand xh2 with battery grip goes arounr $850 and secondhand xt3 body only goes around $800-$850 and a brand new xt3 sells for $950-$999. I mostly do stills and portraits and I travel a lot using fuji 56mm 1.2 and 18-135mm lenses. can you give me your thoughts? I currently have xt2 and I'm selling it for the upgrade. Thank you!
Hey Ken, if you had an opportunity to trade an X-H1 for an X-T4, would that be something worth considering? Or would it still be worthwhile to hold onto the X-H1 :) Thanks Ken!
@@KenTheoriaApophasis that's fair, but would you say it's worthwhile if it was? Maybe you have a video about this already, but I would be interested in hearing your opinion if you had to choose between the X-H1 and the X-T4 if they were the same price or something like that :)
MMMM, I am good.. I will be keeping my D3, D3S, D4, and D500....Also kinda like my D810, though I know it's not quite a D850. The money just doesn't justify the upgrade from the D810 to D850....YET!
I would also add the Fujifilm X-Pro1, with the (how some people say "magic, lil bit film like") x-trans1 sensor. In perfect condition used for around 400€ on ebay which is i would say a very high price for a 8 yrs old apsc camera. But totally worth it :)
Add the Fujifilm X-T1. It still rewards! .....ant it drives nails with that build quality. ; ) I'll also never sell my Voigtlander. or Nikkormat. Yummy!
Great info as usual. Nikon will never able to economically produce a camera like D4 or D3 any more. One quick questions: Out of 3 medium format from Fuji, if you can only have one, which one would you choose? I probably select 50R, if I can save enough. Be safe.
there are also the cameras sold too soon. I have often seen owners of a new one regretting the old one. It might make sense financially to replace now but keeping the old one for some time makes the upgrade safer .
Great video Ken! Have the X-H1 and totally agree. Unfortunately I’ll have to sell my T2 to make way for the T4, but I think that’s a good upgrade. How about lenses you should never sell....?
Will never sell my Nikon FM and Ftn Photomic unless I absolutely have to. Digital cameras? Don't know..only have one a Fujifilm X100F haven't had it long enough to get attached to it but it's growing on me.
Wow... if I had ANY of those mentioned cameras I would definitely sell them with GREAT reason, very contrary to you :-) If I were hyped in shooting digital I might like the D850 for a while, but should likely sell it some time down the line anyway. Go buy a real camera instead, like the Nikon F2

I care for my elderly mother and a sister with MS so I can't take any chances with Covid. Haven't left the house for anything other than groceries in months. I hope you are staying safe!
No love for the D700? I have two... might sell one off after seeing this....
I would totally ditch the XT4 and the D500 and put the D700 on that list instead.
Not selling mine.... no way...
@@gentrygarage you can buy them for 300 now!
@@andrelousada Yes, but I would have to buy some lenses too. I need to move to a bigger place first :)
I recently sold my D500, hadn't used it for almost a year as I was struggling with the weight. Replaced it with the X-T3 to sit next to my X-H1. 👍
Yup caught my XT3 kissing my XH1 in the closet lol. A pair for life.
I would argue the xt3. Tilt screen best for street photography!
I sold my X-T20 and wish I never had. It's the camera that got me into Fujifilm.
I regret selling mine too, great camera
I have it and your right..
It is an amazing camera I'd never part with mine 😊👌👍✌️
My dad had a lieca R4 years ago
Think he sold it for 700 pound when I was young. Are they any good?
For me in no particular order - (FILM) Fujica ST801n, Canon FT QL, Voigtlander Vito II, (DIGITAL) Pentax K3, Fuji X-T1.
Gotta love a guy that complains about the heat and humidity... and then sits down next to a display of a roaring fireplace.
I have Nikon F5 F6 D1 D2HS D2XS D300S D700 D3S. And I will keep them till I am no longer....
The Leica M9 is the king of “do not sell/timeless” category (if you fix the sensor corrosion issue). That camera when fed with the right light, it produces images that can hardly be match by any other camera.
Put down the crack pipe, open the window and clean the bong water out of that shag rug in your living room.
@@greatpariscars You are so versed on the thing you've described that I am assuming you had the chance to play with a Leica lens mounted on an M9.
After the M8, the M9 is the second best classic Leica body. The cover glass is sadly too strong and the DNG processing is not as great as the M8’s.
@@Funktrainer and the M8’s price has been skyrocketing recently. I love the M8 I just wish it was full frame.
P.s olympus om1 my number 1
Mamiya RB67, I have five of them. Also Nikon F2, only two of those...
Hi Ken, is that a printer behind your monitor? What model is that?
epson 2760 ecojet
Fujifilm X-T4 is the odd-one-out in this list, becuase it was introduced to market only in February 2020, so probably not many people own it. Who whould sell it after just 2/3 months? :P
Sir, would you still recommend buying the D500 today? I was thinking of buying a used US model if I can find it at a good price, and then slowly buying some FX lenses until maybe a year or two reveals more Nikon Full Frames. I am looking to use it as a travel camera (with the Tamron 18-400), and like taking photos of architecture (will need a very wide lens), people, and scenic views.
Ken, does Pentax 67 = Pentax 6x7?
yes
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Thx, Ken. I have the old MLU 6x7 and the full compliment of lenses. Difficult to focus with the existing viewfinder, so got the eyepiece magnifier and use the distance scale on the lenses much more.
Ken, thanks for this different way of talking about cameras. Any opinion on the Nikon D800? Bought it a few years ago secondhand in superb condition (about a 1000 exposures) and I'm still really happy with it. It was my upgrade from a D7000, therefore from dx to fx. Wish you a nice day.
It's tend to yield yellowish pictures. And the noise grain is harsher than other nikon full frame to my eyes.
Personally, the FM3a is a camera I will never sell...
Did you make this hand strap on your X-H1?
yes i did
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Would you make one for me to buy? No hurry.
Just bought a Nikkor 600mm F4 AIS for a steal, any thoughts on how good it is?
I agree with the majority of your choices except the Nikon F4. I had a lot issues with it . Ergonomically it wasn't balanced and autofocus was hit and miss. I would take 3 MF F3's over it. I actually replaced it with a "dark side" Canon 1V. Night and day improvement. F5 don't bother.
Thank you for the advice in the XH1 (glad I got it new on sale). I can say I have the xpro1 and believe this is a 'never sell' Camara also because of the nice sensor making great Images plus the range finder style.
Will the XH-2 be good for action/wildlife?
Hi Ken. What about the Fuji x100 series cameras? Any of these? I have a x100f and feel like that I would not want to part with it.
I won’t sell my xh1….NEVER…it’s a freakin amazing camera
I bought a new XH1 with grip when they were on sale in Aust recently & have it packed away for a 50th b’day present for myself. I was starting to have second thoughts after listening to the talk of it’s sensor being too outdated
& was thinking I should have held out for an XT3 when the price drops (I can’t quite manage the entry price for a XT4). You have brightened my day & helped me believe I might have done the right thing by grabbing the XH1 when I did. I don’t buy the latest & greatest when they come out. I buy when the price is right & enjoy them for a long time. I can’t wait to start using it. 😊
XT3 is horrible compared to the XH1, I couldn't wait to sell it. I have two XH1 cameras now..
What you have changed your mind on the D700. And as you said “Best colour of all DSLR’s” ever made.
These were your own words 5 years ago.
What about the Nikon p900?
Love my D750. I’ll save up for the D850 in the future.
For me, only 3. Type 240, FM3a, xpan.
What about Sony a7riv and Canon mark iv?
And Sony a6400 and Sony a9?
I sure enjoy your videos, Ken. I suppose everyone has their own list, but I'll never sell my Nikon F3, F5, or D1, and I probably wouldn't sell my Kodak DCS760 either.
The Q button still work on your X-T4?
X-H1 and i look for a second one.
No XT-3 or 4...the X-H is the one👍
The "better" sensor for photography (no video user) , i think🤷♂️
Thank you!
Are Nikon p1000 any good ?
Hey Ken, if you had an opportunity to trade an X-H1 for an X-T4, would that be something worth considering?
Or would it still be worthwhile to hold onto the X-H1 :)
Thanks Ken!
ehh, nobody gonna trade those EVEN.
But totally worth it :)
nahhhhhh, hehehehe
Part 2
Which lenses to never sell please !!
2 C in Johannesburg right now 🥶
I'd like to vounteer the "fuji w3 with stereobase extender" - nothing like this was made ever since
So glad I bought the XT4!!!
Actually I sold my Nikon F4s and my Pentax 6x7... and I am about to sell my XH1 to get the XT4... damn.
Add the Fujifilm X-T1. It still rewards!
.....ant it drives nails with that build quality. ; ) I'll also never sell my Voigtlander. or Nikkormat. Yummy!
Ken, love my d500 and through your review of Tamron 35mm f1.4, recently purchased it and LOVE it! Keep up the great work!!!
Great info as usual. Nikon will never able to economically produce a camera like D4 or D3 any more. One quick questions: Out of 3 medium format from Fuji, if you can only have one, which one would you choose? I probably select 50R, if I can save enough. Be safe.
Do you still have the xh1?
i dont
I would add my minty D3 to that list.
The Pentax 645Z has better AF than all your GFX cameras
the colours are better too
not EVEN CLOSE......much less the GFX100, youre mental
@@KenTheoriaApophasis Come on mr Fuji fanboy. Get a grip. Pentax 645Z outclasses all those unnecessary megapixels on the street. Incomparable AF
@@gentrygarage Exactly. Fuji schmugi... IT'S BEST EVER.... EVER... REALLY
there are also the cameras sold too soon.
Those which you are using 100% of the time lol
Ken never sells lenses ;-) (I know he does, but damn, it barely dents his collection...)
