    It's now 15 years old, and I just bought one for £249 with low shutter count after watching this video. I already have all the must have recommended lenses for nikon from this channel that I used on my film cameras and adapt to mirrorless. But I've never owned a full frame DSLR. Back then I had the D7100, and while I loved that camera, a part of me did always want an Fx camera. Even if it doesn't match up to modern tech, I can't imagine I could be disappointed for the price.

    2021, and the D700 still going strong. Purchased one in March, was looking for my first FX. Wonderful camera, film like quality. No problem printing 16x20 or even larger prints. Love the manual controls, physical switches. 6 months later am purchasing a 2nd with 12.5k shutter count. And yes, they are still flying off ebay, KEH, MPB shelves in 2021. P.S.- is much easier working with 8-12 mb file sizes than 24-50mb!

    I don't always agree with your lens videos (mainly because my needs are likely much different than yours) but man. Four years in, this video is still relevant. The D700 is, without question, the best non-flagship digital camera Nikon ever produced.

    Found one at a local camera store. It had 17k shutter count came w/ battery grip/extra battery and charger. Was super clean. I came home and started using it and right then and there I knew that the $800 I spent on it was the best investment I could have made. I am in love with this camera. I am also not addicted to buying older nikon lenses. I have compared my photos to some of those the other girls in my club have taken and they are just as crisp and bright as the others. My gear costs pennies on the dollar less then theirs. This guy knows what he is talking about and any photog on a budget (or any photog in general) needs to listen to him on his advice.

      shuttery assy. only costs $400 to replace IF and WHEN you get over 300,000 and IF it fails.

    My best DSLR is the KING Nikon D3S. I used a backup DSLR Nikon D700 and a always love my Nikon F5 for B/W. For Portraits for me is the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF , Nikon AF Nikkor 105mm f/2D DC and the Nikon AF Nikkor 135mm f/2D DC the greatest of all the Nikon lenses. The 3 prime lenses i used with my Nikon F5 long long ago in the 90s are builds like TANKS. The Nikon D700 is a great DSLR for A3 format prints but the Nikon D3S is a littlebit sharper.

    I do like my D700. Its sensor quality is exeptional, even by today’s standards and even with „just” 12 Mpixel. I have done many fine poster sized prints with it. It is also a very robust camera. But this is also its disadvantage. It is buildt like tank, but as heavy and loud like one too. Sometimes taking a shot of someone really feels like shooting his face. 😓

    I purchased a D700 new when it came out and have been using it with old Nikkor MF primes all this time. All Nikkor lenses my dad purchased new in the 1970s. I finally purchased a new Sony mirrorless but plan on continuing to use those old Nikkors with the help of focus peaking and in-body stabilization and less bulk so it's a little easier to lug around. I don't think I'll sell the D700 though. That camera was/is such a joy to use and I don't want to give it up.

Your reviews convinced me to grab both (the tamron 70-200 g2 will be my next acquisition). EVERYTHING in pristine conditions (except for the 80-200, all the rest has originals boxes) for less than 2k$. I’m really happy... sure my wallet is much lighter. But we live only once, isn’t?

    Just discovered your videos, Very blunt , direct and to the point, love them. I totally agree with this one on the D700. I am still shooting this camera for 80% of my work ( shoot weddings/glamour/commercial stuff). Most of the reasons you have mentioned, but the MAIN one is "FILE SIZE", I think 12.1 MP is the perfect size for 95% of most photography you might shoot. I too am a camera hoar! he he, ( I currently have the D700 , D2Xs,D3X, Fuji S5pro, and the D810, had the D70, D2h, D2Hs), bought the D810 just recently and shot a wedding with it as the main camera with the D700 as the second camera, guess what?? After that wedding the D810 is the back up/second camera and only comes out for very large group shots. Those D810 files are too damn big!! Also im "DONE" in playing the upgrade game. No more digital body purchases, what I have will see me through , im gonna slowly go back to shooting film for my personal work and buy film bodies, Just bought myself a Rolleiflex 3.5 E , now that is a KICK ASS camera, next is a Nikon F6 , then the Nikon F4S ( which I previously had 2 of and sold , also just like the 35-70 2.8D which I had 2 of and also sold DONT KNOW WHY I DID THAT after seeing your video on the best secret nikkor lenses.
    SUBSCRIBED!

    Hi T A P. Just love the way you present your videos. Thank you for giving the D700 that kind of recognition. I just wanted to tell you that I´m really happy with my D700, which I bought 2015 for 817 USD. 1400 clicks with a Nikon battery grip with the battery and other stuff. Of course I sometimes think about the possibilities to crop with the D800/800E/810, but you can´t have it all. I totally agree with your point that this camera suits amateurs or "better". I´ve seen so many photos from amateurs with pro models, and I have to say it makes me think that people (men) buy equipment with the trust that the gear makes the photos. But it don´t. I´ve spend a lot of time to learn the key ingredients to at great photo. Looked at many works from pros and visit exhibitions.Anyway. Keep those videos coming and stay safe.

    ...See I own and work the D800e, D7100, D4s, and D700. I use all on everything from Astro to portraiture (Not to mention the D80 that I have but no longer use) combined with 30K worth of premium glass (No way near the ridiculous amount of glass KEN has). I am a pro, and this man is 100% right about d700. this is the best price/ performance fx digital camera ever built from nikon and still is awesome camera after all this years. Hell, one can even do sports with it; with aditional battery grip and En el 4 battery that enables 8 fps frame burst upgrade. Ofcourse it will cost you extra bucks, but no latter fx camera model (d610, d750, d810,..) with battery grip option doesn't offer you such fps burst upgrade nor 8fps speed. :-)

    I'm going to upgrade this summer, and was thinking of buying either the D700 or going for the D7100. I've got some decent glass, a few D lenses (a few of the ones you have recomended), and I just got the Sigma 18-35 Art lense (which is a DX lense). I'm currently shooting with a D90 (my dinky body). Considering I just purchased the Sigma, would it work on the D700? Or should I just get the D7100 since that is a DX camera and would be compatible with my Sigma? Suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      whats your total budget? you have plenty of glass?
      You can still shoot your DX lenses on your FX, YES it would still work on the D700
      D700 will take ANY DX lens , its a (originally it was!!!) $3000 PRO DSLR, for $800 (roughly)
      IN YOUR CASE, given YOUR SITUATION, i would recommend the Factory Nikon refurb (see my video, they all look 100% new) D7100 for $700 from B and H

    • @daytripp79
      @daytripp79 9 лет назад

      Theoria Apophasis My budget is roughly $800-$1000. You can never have too much glass, but I've only got 50mm 1.8 D, 85mm 1.8D, 35-70 D, and the 135 2.8AI as far as Nikons are concerned, and the Sigma 18-35 Art 1.8 which is an amazing lense with super sharp pics even on my Dinky. Well, it sounds like going for the D7100 would be my best bet. I also keep hearing that there's going to be a price drop on the D7100 because the D7200 more than likely will come out soon. Anyways, thanks for the advice and recommendations, I got the 35-70 because of you, very awesome lense.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      Yeah, you heard that from me! Yes, it should take NO MORE than 2 months after the release of the crappy D7200 for the price to drop on the D7100, but thats mere speculation based upon PRIOR occurrences.
      Im glad youre happy! Trying to SAVE people money, rather than "this shit is expensive, you gotta buy this!!!"
      I hate those people!!! Ive got the inexpensive AND expensive stuff,..... the best is the BEST, price be DAMNED

Been using crop sensors since I swithched from film to digital and to be honest all my AFD and AFS lenses never seemed to be real impressive on the DX camera so I am finally going FX. Nice. Bought one new in 2008. Great camera. Solid. I fell down the front steps at my sister's house when the camera was a year old, slammed the camera down as I fell, and broke her stone step. Didn't hurt the camera. Only had to replace it when it was stolen. I replaced it with....another D700.

    2020 I still rate the d700..
    Just looked and on a used camera site they got one with 1200 clicks in mint condition for £399 UK.. omg i might buy it
    Currently using a d500 mostly but looking at my pics and some my best shots taken on the old d300 and a prime.
    Never had the 700 might treat myself for 400£ what do you think

    D700 is one of the BEST cameras Nikon had ever made! i love the quality that it makes, it also done over 400,000k shutter count and still going. I know someone whos got one thats done over million shutter count and still working like new!!! i prefer D700 over my D750 but the only reason i use the D750 is because its ligher and does a little better in high iso and slight higher megapixel etc but im still using my D700 for my 2nd camera. People need to stop wasting their money on cameras they dont understand

    I went to the Photo Show in NYC. I went to the Nikon booth and asked Steve Dyusa (not sure how to spell that) " what size are the pixels on a D700?" He replied "what are you and engineer?" I said "no: I'm a commercial photographer who want to know the fucking size of the pixels on a D700!" He said "oh - 8.53 mu" I said "good! I'll buy one" and I did in 2009. You are correct. It was and still is great! I have added a D850 now (you can tell that I care less about pixel size) but the D700 still works perfectly. My clients really can't tell the difference. Except that I can and have shot 4K video for them. Please know that before the D700 I was using a Leaf Volare with 11 mu pixels. Back then it was very important.

    Price point question: there's a D700 and D800 on local classifieds for $850 and $1,150 respectively, both with 36k actuations and from the photos in good shape (watched your used buying vid-thanks!) but will inspect more in person. In this particular pricing circumstance, is the D700 still the better choice? Thanks.

    Had a d700 and a d300s a few years ago. Traded them both in for a d500. You can’t forget the color, images, contrast etc of the d700. Its December 2019 and I just added another d700 to accompany my d500. I don’t see a need to buy another body for a loooong time. The 500 can do 4k if I need to the 700 is hard to beat.

    Hey..thanks for making this camera your top pick! I just purchased one, a move up from the D90 I have been using for years, basically because 1) I don't have the money to purchased a D4S, 2) shares some of the same stuff with with D90 (the bigger badder brother of the D90 and D300), and has some great features that even the newer Nikon FX cameras don't have (like the shutter on the eye piece). I am definitely an amateur trying to up my game...thanks for validating my decision!

      The D700 in several ways is superior to the $6000 D4s.
      So you already GOT the D700, or it on its way out to you?
      Did you check the shutter clicks on your "new" D700 yet?
      Shes a tank with a tight ass. A wonderful cammy !!!
      I had a D4s for use for 2 months. It had very impressing low light and FAST continuous high shooting,.......but other than that theres, NOTHING impressive about that $6000 camera.
      Dont "lovingly look" forward to a D4s, you have , in MANY ways , a superior camera in your D700.
      Awesome D700 owner !!! winks

      Theoria Apophasis Got it a couple months back....14K shutter activations. Works well, and it was a steep learning curve from the D90...lots of new menu items and settings to take advantage of. I shoot mostly in Manual, so I could jump right in, but the extra features like the multiple profiles are something I need take more advantage of. The only thin I need to do is send it in for a CLA...I know the sensor needs to be cleaned. Any recommendations.....send to Nikon direct, and authorized shop or one of thedozens out there that say they can do it as well as Nikon?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      14k is nothing, thats a great low count.
      Ohh, i bet it was steep from the D90!!!
      did you download some of the USEFUL books on using the D700 off the torrent sites?
      I do my own sensor cleanings, its really rather easy, and i posted a link on the guy that shows you how to do it.
      But, ive spent most of my life fixing things, so im very used to do crap like that.
      I wouldnt trust anyone clean the sensor but you once you watch a video on doing it , if you need the link, let me know.
      Nikon of course can be trusted, but theyre high and SLOW.

Other bodys with lots more shutter counts sell on an equal price here in germany as well. Do you think thats a good price? I have been using a D200 for some thee yeas now and have been more than satisfied with the the pictuers untill recently when I have taken up wildlife photography using a 200 500 lens,
    I find that the auto focus is very slow when trying to catch things in movement.

    I think I would still rather have a d810 instead of a d700 (if i wasnt originally paying for it), because it's worth more. You could sell it for 2500 dollars or so (I think I don't know for sure) and then you could buy other things or whatever but to me the d810 is more valuable now than the d700. But like your talking about spending your own money, then you are totally 100% correct. What do you think about the d750?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      well, ive got both, my fave is my D810, ...forgetting WORTH however, the D700 is that ratty old confortable tough made sofa youd rather sleep in rather than the expensive new lush thing you just bought.
      D750 is the WORST VALUE Nikon in many many years, at MOST its a $1800 camera, sure as hell not $2200
