Shout out from Michigan 👋My dad has two 30+ year old levels! We love your videos Issac you're a great teacher! We are excited to use flow fx for the first time
Liked the comment, nice of you to say. Very true, so very true. Isaac and his Team are great ppl, and love how Isaac still tries to make time and answer any email, TXT, etc...he gets from ppl. Pretty nice and cool of him😊👍🏻
FloFX drain on order! Can't wait to see it... I'll be making a video of my massive bathroom reno and sharing it with y'all when done. Isaac: you've been a huge influence on my project. Can't thank you enough.
Thank you Coach for all your videos and the direction they contain!! With your incredible assistance I tackled a Kitchen backsplash. 360 square feet of 6x35 wood look floor tile. A new guest bath surround with 4x 6 subway tile and as of yesterday, finished the master bath shower with 8x16 tile. The 36x36 master shower included the Kerdi membrane, Kerdi corner bench, Kerdi niche and your mud deck technique. I totally get why you tile guys get paid what you get paid. Looks simple from up high but once you get down in the weeds, oh boy!! Your videos inspired me to tackle these progects and in the process I found out a lot about myself. I found out that Squaring a 1916 bathroom caused my cussing vocabulary to resurface so quickly. I also know that paying attention to detail in tile work, such as making sure your floor is flat and that walls are square really paid off when it came to setting the tile!! I have to say agian, making sure everything is square is probably what your videos prepared me for the most when it came to the actual work. I also have to say though, the very most most improtant lesson I came to acknowledge in this journey, is that I now know that this 60 year old body is not cut out for what you guys do on a day to day. This is definitly a young man's sport and I consider myself in pretty good shape!! Anyway, the wife is happy, I did not get injured in the process too bad and I feel good about my work. I can promise you this.......our new house we are planning now.......I will have the tile work and flooring contracted!! Thank you again for the push to take this adventure and saving us a couple bucks in the process. Keep up the unbiased videos for us DIYers and keep tiling on with the no compromised hard work that you do!!
Isaac, very nice and thorough videos. I have a customer with a 14 year old shower. I live in the Midwest. The customers shower, I did not install, failed. It is a second floor massive walk in with full built in bench on the long side. I did a water test and it doesn't hold. Tearing in and around the drain revealed quite a bit. The weep holes were completely plugged. They used 1 layer of felt and looks like one or two layers of tar for waterproofing. Looks like a make shift hot mop...which is not done in this part of the country. There must be flexion in the floor and drain because the felt was ripped around the collette. Now I need to give the customer some bad news. 5 x 6.5 shower with long built bench, glass wall and jacuzzi on one side. Want to travel near Chicago? Haha
Plumbing is hard work. It is good to see this plumber getting a spacious, quality shower. After a hard day's work, it's really comforting to have a big, clean shower to relax in.
New subscription, getting ready to redo a bad, bad shower on concrete with no pan. House was a total tear out and even though we tried to make it work the shower is no good. Thank you for your videos! I am putting together how to do this. Thinset, Fx drain, mortar bed, waterproofing, thinset, tile, tile grout, seal, seal. Seal.
Pulled our tub n old shower Installing walk in shower. These vids are terrific. Have watched many . Going with liner pan.. dry pack. No pre slope. I’m in agreement with another tile guy who’s put many vids out.. just not necessary.. your putting pan on plywood.. even after waterproofing that.. no concerns about water getting to plywood? I wouldn’t do that.. those flow fx drains are 😎.
Flo fx drain works very well. I ordered 1 from your website 1-2 yrs ago. There was a mix-up with shipping, and you drove it to my project. I've learned a lot about products, fail / no fail from your youtube channel. You provide a great service and teaching even for someone like me who thinks they know it all after 10 yrs doing remodels. I appreciate what you do. Side note; I haven't seen all of your videos, so I don't know for sure, but i've never seen you do any comparisons on foam board vs concrete board. I have seen you waterproof concrete fiber board and strengthen all the joints like I do with foam board. It's much easier to work with for me. Your thoughts?
thank you for the video. Im just about to start the same job and your videos have been invaluable. I would not have had the confidence to attempt it if I hadnt seen this
Wood Float Guy here. In the Midwest. / MO. My wood float/screed, levels/screed, margin trowel, and finish float is all I use. When the pan is completely finished, I'll burn it in a little with my steel finish float. I want it smooth, but I don't want to bring any unnecessary water to the top. Also with a wood float, you can tamp and shape without digging. Idk how people do it with a finish float only. Seems you couldn't tamp and shape without digging. I digress.... A Mag float works ok too, but nothing like a woody and a mag will bring a bit of unnecessary water to the top. Anyhow...... Pan looks good man. Flo fx Drain looks fantastic. Anxious to get some in stock. Thanks for the content! 💯 Edit: So I should have watched the entire thing before sending off a post. Lol! You do your pan just as I do. Anyhow.... Just wanted to throw that in. Take care!
If I get water coming to the top it means I have too much water and/cement in my mix. I know it can be done, but using a 5 -1 with a half gallon of water per 55lbs will give me perfect mud that water will not "cream up" on the surface no matter what. Thanks for your reply and glad to another pro on here!
What's underneath the wire? Meaning, what are the proper layers starting with the plywood on the floor. Also, what board are you using on the walls now? Thanks, so many videos and so many ways. I have two bathrooms I'm working on. One is on the second floor and the other is on a concrete slab.
Very helpful, thank you. I'll be starting my bathroom renovation soon and I the shower is what I'm dreading cause I've done most other things, but not a shower.
30 YR OLD STABILA LOL. That's hilarious what are the chances! I also have a 30 year old Stabila. I started setting marble, granite and tile 30 years ago and I still have my original Stabila. I believe it's 28 inches. It's a hair off but still in between the lines. I heard they have a lifetime guarantee for up to a certain percentage off. But I just marked it and still continue using because it's obviously almost perfect being a stabila . I also still have my 30 year old Stabila torpedo level!
Great job! I have a cast iron 2’ Stebela level I use for granite tops, walls, etc.. It’s a 1942!🤣 Btw, I need your expertise on my personal shower. I’m buying an hour of your time from your website!👍🏽 I have learned so much from your channel. Thank you Isaac! Jesse from Midwest granite..
Im a bit confused. I just saw your video about preslope and weep holes that remove any water that gets into the mortar allowing it to still drain out. How will that be possible with this drain type with no weep holes. Thanks for all the great shared knowledge!!
Great video and learned many things from you . I have a question when setting the FLOW FX, when you set down to the drain with 2” pvc , I noticed you didn’t use the glue and do you need to cut the pvc? Thanks in advance
Really good video good product one thing I will say I only use modified or fortified no matter what the job is unless there's a certain applications with a specific product but most of the time modified fortified
Awesome channel man! You are giving me the confidence to save money and do this myself. My one concern is the speed I’m gonna be working and the time I have before the deck mud starts setting. How long do I have to work with before it starts setting? The other concern is having enough slope to drain.
I am doing 2 Shower remodels and emailed and tried to call Chase about his new drains and no response. I wanted to see the installation video and you have checked off one of my concerns. Thanks
Doesn't sound like Chase, heck I sent him a message on FB and he actually called me in the phone to discuss my situation. Awesome product and even better customer service. But keep in mind he's just one person trying to run this business as well as being a tile contractor. Maybe he never got the message?
If I’m doing a large shower or sauna, I cut straight 2x4’s or any wood I have on site to make different lengths for screeding. Hardest part about dry pack is mixing and moving the mud. Very labour intensive. I still prefer foam pans and I’ll level the floor first if need be. If you’re doing this for career I suggest saving your body as much as you can.
I'm gonna have mix my own deck mud. The one we have from the home center is sand/topping mix and it has too much aggregate so it's difficult to use and not have a lumpy finish
I used this on my shower pan installation. Very cool, and it's heavy-duty. It makes it easy to align the tile without any little pieces on the sides. The only thing I didn't like was that the surface area to connect the adapter to the main drain flange was a little short. I think this is to allow more flexibility in making it level, but I'd prefer more surface area, especially because it was a little loose, too. Everything else was perfect. It's really, really secured well into the mortar bed, and the lip for waterproofing is nice and wide.
Hi! Thanks for that awesome instructional video. Very helpful! I ordered and installed the flo FX drain kit but was unable to push the drain all the way down onto the 2 in pipe. There is about 1/8” gap between the top of the 2” pipe and the lip of the drain fitting. Is this ok as it is? I did abs cement on the inside of the flo FX and the outside of the drain pipe. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 😊
I’m using schluter all set. I’m assuming I can butter the bottom of the Flo fx drain flange with it and press it down onto the mud pack and it will bond well? 🤷♂️
Iasic when you tile up to the flo FX drain and you set your height with the spacers. How do you finish the tile edge next to the drain grate. Are you leaving a gap with a dry fit, are you grouting up to the grate, are you siliconing the 4 sides of the tile to the grate etc. I hope to hear back soon. Thanks.
What membrane are you using on the plywood subfloor (underneath the chicken wire)??? Is that the HardiBacker Hydrodefense on the shower walls? What do you typically prefer for a backerboard?
Hey TileCoach, Can you make a video of how you finish the drain assembly for the finished floor tile...theres no videos on the internet about this step
I have the same bathroom in my house and also 3/4” subfloor playwood and also crawlspace. I’m doing now new Shower . Can I use PREFAB shower pan or I have to do chicken wire and mud ? Please let me know I have no exp. at all with tiles.
I’m planning to do a schluter heated floor, should the drain flange be above the mud the thickness of the ditra that way the ditra and flange are flush? So when the kerdie waterproof membrane goes on there is a smooth transition over the drain flange?
How does the water drain from the waterproof membrane if you're adding all that thin set to the plastic spacers, you're pretty much glueing it and creating a barrier, water has to pool and can only drain through the top drain when it reaches the height of the top of the tile? Doesn't seem right? Do you have to add thin set or can it be left loose to allow drainage?
As someone looking to tile their first shower, and hopefully more to come. What would you say are some tips or points where I can stop and say ok this is good or this is all bad? Almost to break it down into phases and check myself.
I prefer a dry pack pan but the foam bed is interesting. Wonder if applying 1" to 2" of dry pack on top of the foam slope bed would work, a kind of hybrid system? Using the foam to set the slope but then applying a layer of dry pack for strength, kinda the best of both. Youd have to compensate for curb height possibly but shouldnt be a problem. Ive never had issue setting my slope in dry pack but for weekend warriors and DIYers it might be a viable option. About that drain, i currently form a recessed basin around my drain flange about 1.5" deep and about 10" in diameter that i fill with pea gravel, broken tile etc to insure proper drainage should the grout fail. I form the basin in my dry pack then coat with Redgard extending up onto the drains bottom flange giving me a one piece waterproof membrane from top to bottom. Once filled with gravel etc it gives compressive strength to support the tile while allowing a reservoir and good drainage into the drain should water ever get beneath the tile. The drain system you showed doesnt allow for a reservoir basin at all and doesnt appear to do anything fancy with any water that does sneak past the tile. I understand its advantages with install but what about drainage. Does it address this at all and if not could it be used in the capacity i outlined above with the bottom flange mounted in the bottom of a basin? Thanks for your time.
just wondering what that 2 inch or so line you snapped across the base of the shower walls after you finished your mud job...is that where your gonna start ur full row of tiles for the wall? or reference for the floor
Hey everyone, I’m new to this channel and I’ve been taking the last couple of days to educate myself on showers. Question: Wouldn’t the mud bed cover the weep holes and cause water build-up?
He'll most likely put some thinset on top of the deck mortar bed/pan to adhere a membrane (ex: kerdi or lacrete hydro ban.) I also don't even know if this drain has weep holes due to the slope of the drain. It doesn't really look like there is a place for water to sit, due to there being no raised threaded coupling on the bottom... The drain is just one piece that goes direct to the ABS (or PVC if you're east coast.) I may be wrong...
It needs no pre slope because water isn't getting under the membrane, correct? Does the drain have weep holes just in case? Shouldn't the surround of the flange be done with peagravel. Thanks in advance.
I followed this video and did it just like you did. However, I was not as proficient in getting it as smooth. I got the slope but my bed was a bit rough. Can I put a skim coat of All Set to smooth it out before I do the Kerdi membrane?
My bathroom remodeler doesn't want to do just a waterproof membrane on top of cement. he wants to do the poly membrane underneath the cement mortar would you advise to paint red guard on top of the mortar to basically do two layers??? I'm using the flow fx drain
Is the Flo Fx drain not glued to the drain pipe? Or did I miss that part? It looked like it was just pushed into place in the mortar base with no abs cement for the drain pipe?
What is it that makes it to where you only have to have the one layer then the waterproofing just curious I just found this video and would love to just have to install one layer of the mud them waterproof?
Hi Isaac, nice work. I was wondering if you can help me with my project… I would like to remove the tub and have just a shower with tile. Can you assist? I live in the Midwest
I see your using Laticrete board for your walls ? Do you need washers under the screws , or just on ceilings ? Thanks for all your videos , you are doing great work for all new and old timers in the tile trade .
Isaac does this flange have weep holes I’m wondering if I install after I add my mud above subfloor the water that sits on bottom of mud where will it go Opposed to other drains that have weep holes ?
Can you make video showing flo fx drain installed in kerdi pre sloped shower tray? I am just getting started in my tile journey and really appreciate the videos.
I know, why I’ve tried avoiding it as long as possible. Customers want tile and the tile guy I’ve used who has taught me moved to different state so I am stuck doing it now.
If the perimeter of the pan is all at the same level, and it's 1/4" per foot sloop at the farthest point, then it must be more like 1" per foot sloop where the drain is nearest to the perimeter. Is this best practice? At what point is the slope too much for safely standing in the wet shower? Or what happens when the drain is at the end of a shower and you have only 6 inches to one wall but 4 1/2 feet to the other.... Surely your pans perimeter can't be level in that situation. I'm curious about how you decide when, and when not, to have a level perimeter... What's the cutoff?
I don’t understand why from the drain to the corners, you slope away from the drain? I would think the mud pack should slope from the wall to the drain? Can you please explain that? Thx!
I've been watching a bunch of your videos. I'm a missionary builder, basically I work on single mom's, and elderly who can't afford most of these jobs. I have a mom who is over 400 lbs and I am going to build her a larger custom shower so she can fit in it comfortably. The prefab shower pans are not wide enough, unless they are way up there on price. I've been watching the foam pans you have been doing, but i'm scared of failure with the weight. Would you stick to old school doing the to layers of concrete for more support? I haven't really seen anyone talking about how well the foam boards hold up on those kind of issues or can you point me to any of your videos that might cover this? Your doing great work thanks.
Isaac Would the FLOFX work with a pre- sloped pan. I was using Schluters pans, But I’m not a fan of the softness of their pans. So I’m going to see if Lats is a harder pan
I hope you get the chance to show this installed in a concrete floor. Thank you for the videos, it's nice seeing someone with such positivity. Also just wondering, I see a lot of videos saying to build the pan before the backer board. What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you for watching! For the sheet membrane installation video that comes after this one: ruclips.net/video/XBtl1qoAqLI/видео.html
you still using the pro fx?
I need a video of a flowfx drain set on a slab with a new stub out. How short do I cut the pipe.

I watch a number of tile video's on youtube, but you're my tile coach. ✌️
I read a number of comments on RUclips videos but this was the gayest one.
Best drain on the market! And Chase Twitchell a genius (owner of FloFx).
Issac, watching you float these pans never gets old! Can't wait to hang out this summer!-J

Wow, you can always recognize a professional when they make it look so easy! Excellent video, excellent technique, excellent tutorial!!
I will be shaping my shower pan and installing a FloFX drain after work today! Thanks for all of your tutorials.

Jesse from Midwest granite..
Awesome video. Can you explain why you don't form the curb with deckmud?
Im a bit confused. I just saw your video about preslope and weep holes that remove any water that gets into the mortar allowing it to still drain out. How will that be possible with this drain type with no weep holes. Thanks for all the great shared knowledge!!
Great video and learned many things from you . I have a question when setting the FLOW FX, when you set down to the drain with 2” pvc , I noticed you didn’t use the glue and do you need to cut the pvc? Thanks in advance
What are your thoughts on a liquid membrane like hydroban rather than the sheet membrane after this single float drain install?
Isaac, is the FloFX also available cross border up in Toronto Canada?
Do have a video showing how you do it on a slab? You did say to leave a stub out a couple inches, but when would you cut it to height?
Really good video good product one thing I will say I only use modified or fortified no matter what the job is unless there's a certain applications with a specific product but most of the time modified fortified
Awesome channel man! You are giving me the confidence to save money and do this myself. My one concern is the speed I’m gonna be working and the time I have before the deck mud starts setting. How long do I have to work with before it starts setting? The other concern is having enough slope to drain.
what product is the deck mud mix you are using. Thanks and love your stuff.
I am doing 2 Shower remodels and emailed and tried to call Chase about his new drains and no response. I wanted to see the installation video and you have checked off one of my concerns. Thanks
Weird. I emailed him and Chase responded the same day. Glad to see this video too!
Doesn't sound like Chase, heck I sent him a message on FB and he actually called me in the phone to discuss my situation. Awesome product and even better customer service. But keep in mind he's just one person trying to run this business as well as being a tile contractor. Maybe he never got the message?
Nice video ,Im old school with hrydro ban pre slope and tape, never had one fail yet thank God :)
If I’m doing a large shower or sauna, I cut straight 2x4’s or any wood I have on site to make different lengths for screeding. Hardest part about dry pack is mixing and moving the mud. will water pool in the 1.5 around the drain? seems like its sloped to the flange and am curious how water settles after a shower
Yes that’s fine!
Awesome, thank you!
I’m using schluter all set. I’m assuming I can butter the bottom of the Flo fx drain flange with it and press it down onto the mud pack and it will bond well? 🤷♂️
are there any videos showing how to install flo with schulter foam pans?
In the Buckeye we use a trowel but also a rubber float to pack it down hard
Iasic when you tile up to the flo FX drain and you set your height with the spacers. How do you finish the tile edge next to the drain grate. Are you leaving a gap with a dry fit, are you grouting up to the grate, are you siliconing the 4 sides of the tile to the grate etc. I hope to hear back soon. Thanks.
Grout up to the grate carrier.
@@TileCoach man I was overthinking too hard. I forgot there was a grate holder. Oops. Thanks for the quick reply. Now I get it.
Just set one of these today, good product!
I actually like using a preslope because I feel the thicker mud helps the floor being more ridged and helps avoid cracks.
What membrane are you using on the plywood subfloor (underneath the chicken wire)??? Is that the HardiBacker Hydrodefense on the shower walls? What do you typically prefer for a backerboard?
Wondering the same thing!
Hey TileCoach, Can you make a video of how you finish the drain assembly for the finished floor tile...theres no videos on the internet about this step
Hey coach, what are you using for the uncoupling membrane and lath under your mud bed? Thanks!
Do you know if I can add a screen under the grate? To catch hair ?
I have the same bathroom in my house and also 3/4” subfloor playwood and also crawlspace. I’m doing now new Shower . Can I use PREFAB shower pan or I have to do chicken wire and mud ? Please let me know I have no exp. at all with tiles.
Do you do the leveling the same when your drain is off set ??is it much harder to get the pitch ?
I’m planning to do a schluter heated floor, should the drain flange be above the mud the thickness of the ditra that way the ditra and flange are flush? So when the kerdie waterproof membrane goes on there is a smooth transition over the drain flange?
How does the water drain from the waterproof membrane if you're adding all that thin set to the plastic spacers, you're pretty much glueing it and creating a barrier, water has to pool and can only drain through the top drain when it reaches the height of the top of the tile? Doesn't seem right? Do you have to add thin set or can it be left loose to allow drainage?
Issac thank you so much for the content. These videos are amazing. What type of shower curb is that? It looks like schluter?
I just bought one. Do I have to use the clamping adapter coupling? What is if for? I didn't see you mention it in video. Thank you
my stub is out 8" thinking about that FloxFx drain!!!
Great demonstration of the product
Love my stabila levels!!!
Question: Are you able to use a Goof Proof Quick Pitch System for the bed with the flowfx?
True craftsmanship awesome mate👍
Why is there no videos showing how to set the spacers and grate carrier for final installation? Are they installed with thinset?
You have your systems confused. This is a sealed system. A water in- water out system uses weep holes
Can you put down liquid membrane before the fabric membrane as extra insurance? Our would that affect bonding of the materials?
Can i just redguard ontop of the deck mud once it dries? and use fiber cloth between the walls and over the flange?
It needs no pre slope because water isn't getting under the membrane, correct? Does the drain have weep holes just in case? Shouldn't the surround of the flange be done with peagravel. Thanks in advance.
I followed this video and did it just like you did. However, I was not as proficient in getting it as smooth. I got the slope but my bed was a bit rough. Can I put a skim coat of All Set to smooth it out before I do the Kerdi membrane?
yes you can!
My bathroom remodeler doesn't want to do just a waterproof membrane on top of cement. he wants to do the poly membrane underneath the cement mortar would you advise to paint red guard on top of the mortar to basically do two layers??? I'm using the flow fx drain
How high is the drain supposed to be from the subfloor? Could you also screw in the drain to the subfloor to help mechanically level the drain?
Is the Flo Fx drain not glued to the drain pipe? Or did I miss that part? It looked like it was just pushed into place in the mortar base with no abs cement for the drain pipe?
What is it that makes it to where you only have to have the one layer then the waterproofing just curious I just found this video and would love to just have to install one layer of the mud them waterproof?
I'm wondering this too. Have you ever gotten an answer elsewhere?
When do you do the hot mop
Another awesome video. Thanks.
Do you brush on an additional water proofing like ardex 8 + 9 or hydroban, red guard?
I though that was what really sealed those membranes.
Hi Isaac, nice work. I was wondering if you can help me with my project… I would like to remove the tub and have just a shower with tile. Can you assist? I live in the Midwest
What did you use for cleavage membrane? How do you install it? Do you lay the membrane down and then chicken wire and staple it? Thanks
I see your using Laticrete board for your walls ? Do you need washers under the screws , or just on ceilings ? Thanks for all your videos , you are doing great work for all new and old timers in the tile trade .
How does that dry mud not get into the wheep holes
Isaac does this flange have weep holes
I’m wondering if I install after I add my mud above subfloor the water that sits on bottom of mud where will it go
Opposed to other drains that have weep holes ?
How long can mud pan sit b4 having to tile ontop? Can it sit for over a weekend b4 starting to tile, or do you need to tile within 16hrs
Can you make video showing flo fx drain installed in kerdi pre sloped shower tray? I am just getting started in my tile journey and really appreciate the videos.
Tile work sucks
I know, why I’ve tried avoiding it as long as possible. Customers want tile and the tile guy I’ve used who has taught me moved to different state so I am stuck doing it now.
Look up revolutionary shower systems. Corneil can make you a custom foam pan for the flo-fx
Does Flo Fx make line drains?
Thanks for the video Isaac! If you were doing this on a concrete floor, would you still use the lathe under the mud?
Using a cleavage membrane, is there any waterproofing done when installing the wall board?
Great job
If the perimeter of the pan is all at the same level, and it's 1/4" per foot sloop at the farthest point, then it must be more like 1" per foot sloop where the drain is nearest to the perimeter. Is this best practice? At what point is the slope too much for safely standing in the wet shower? Or what happens when the drain is at the end of a shower and you have only 6 inches to one wall but 4 1/2 feet to the other.... Surely your pans perimeter can't be level in that situation. I'm curious about how you decide when, and when not, to have a level perimeter... What's the cutoff?
Is there any danger of the drain de-coupling from the deck mud when the plumber pushes up from below to attach the p-trap?
Do they have tile over drain??? I don’t see it but I am buying the drain system from your site
So it's better to use chicken wire vs lathe?
I don’t understand why from the drain to the corners, you slope away from the drain? I would think the mud pack should slope from the wall to the drain? Can you please explain that? Thx!
It is sloped toward the drain
Isaac
Would the FLOFX work with a pre- sloped pan.
Same two thoughts I had! Would love to see done on concrete slab. Also curious whether to install backerboard before or after pan.
So I can’t use this drain and the Oatley pan fabric?
