I never thought id get into binge watching shower and bathroom teardown and repair videos, yet I think ive watched at least 30 to 40 hours of your videos now. Through lots of research and watching these videos, ive found what to avoid and what to do right with my bathroom im remodeling and currentlly completing the tiling for the shower I built. Love the content, Keep it up!
I call my wife in regularlly on these videos where you find the mastic and I start going off about how so many people use mastic in these videos and it drives me insane. The wealth of knowledge you provide is amazing.
Though I started using it on the advice from my father for severe elbow pain, glucosamine chondroitin with msm also relieved my lower back pain that I began having when I was about your age. Took about three weeks to build up in my system, but it worked so well that I now recommend it to all my friends. Wasn't the expensive stuff they advertise now, just a plain supplement from the 'superstore'. I'm now 62 and still working remodeling houses pain free. Anyway, hope yours gets better and thanks for the great vids.
Cool, so he’s paying a fair price and you still get paid multiple ways from the project. Just be transparent, it’s obvious people think you are shower Jesus. Don’t abuse that by setting market prices for your industry
In my experience remodeling my primary bathroom, it was not that I did not have the information to build a luxury shower but not having enough time to do it correctly.
People who put their mistakes out there like this deserve nothing but respect and commendation. It’s embarrassing for sure but it takes an impressive caliber of person to allow their mistakes to see the light of day like this.
Did tile for 40 years. As soon as I saw the signs of water soaking up at the base of the wall, I knew there would be a nightmare under the floor and a total tear out and redo of the entire shower. The fact that they used mastic in a shower pan is comical. I'm an old school mud guy and also hot mopped pans. The new systems they use now days might meet building codes and be easier and cheaper, but still can't beat the old school hot mopped pan and floated shower walls.
No, a humble guy doesn’t attempt to hack job a $10k shower in a $25k bathroom. They realize it’s out of their scope. To DIY this is a unique form of arrogance imo
I've followed your videos to the "T" and I'm about 1 weekend away from completion..... I hope my OCD pays off.... I'm a sheet metal guy, but know plenty of other trades and know the what not to do's. Issacs videos are the best on RUclips and all the products have worked exactly as he explains. Kind of wish I was one of his employees....if I wasn't a tinner LOL
Nice guy! It's interesting how people have a go and it turns out that way. Massive respect for owning up to it. Mr Tile Coach well done for not making fun of him he had a go. I have seen many jobs with DIY 'ers and they would put some professionals to shame. This is not the case this time. Part of learning is to admit your work is wrong and let someone who knows what they are doing have a go and maybe learn from them.
I still watch your videos even after learning from you and remodeling our master bathroom from the ground up over a year ago. Keep up the great learning channel.
Mastic mold is wild. I've ran into it a few times and damn, what a stench. I'm pretty confident you personally could cut that clean ~8" up all the way around. The risk would obviously be the removal considering natural stone can be very fragile. If you did manage to get it out, you could cut the strips into triangles or squares for resetting with a design. At that point, it's no different than other small format tiles meeting tubs or shower pans. Love the vids sir.
I'm a contractor in Utah we done a lot of tile jobs and this is the channel i need for a deeper understanding of how to tile a bathroom the correct way .Great coaching and great job thank you
It’s nice for stretching and something I use with my PT clients. But when we are talking real nerve impingement, you need a proper decompression table that you strap into and get pulled mechanically. Additionally, it’s vital to protect lordosis the time; sitting, standing, moving and working. Meaning you sit with a proper lumbar pillow, you sleep with a proper sleeping lumbar pillow, and you move in ways using a straight back. This will solve most cases of nerve impingement from anterior bulges and full herniations of the vertebrae. Look into the McKenzie method of therapy and it might change your life (to anyone who reads this)
These videos are why I have a shower that I have not done/started in 2 years. When I started researching the puzzle shower was what was recommended. Tile redi definitely looks like less potential issues and what I will use.
We purchased a home that a custom home builder built for his family, the guy put a lot of time and money in extras and details. BUT, his choice on tile contractor is questionable! We purchase the house when it was 11 years old, 3 years after purchasing, the large shower was leaking. I had a crew come in to demo all shower, tile floor, tile tub surround. And there it was, the pan liner was cut in all 4 corners, nails through liner right above pan and of course, roofing nails in the curb! I am not a tile guy but my background being 30 years as an electrical contractor with 21+ years as electrical, mechanical and architectural engineer, I have run across many good contractors but have also run across so many idiots. I was hesitant on hiring a tile contractor to build another shower pan and install tile. After much research a couple years ago, I ordered a Tile-Redi custom size shower pan, installed it myself. What a piece of mind having that shower pan. The pan is very well built, and solid once installed. I believe in those pans to the point that I have another hotel to start designing this Fall, 210 rooms with all rooms having large showers. Probably going to spec Tile-Redi shower pans instead of site-built pans.
Love your stuff. Been in home improvement sales for about 6 years. Climbed the ladder to regional director of a large company. Have you ever considered doing a sit down sales pitch after you inspect a shower like this? I think you could close a lot of customers same day.
Well I always say might as well give it a go and if it fails then try it again. Sometimes you may over spend for the project but at least it’s done correctly.
Tile redi is legit. The banding never looked good even before you did the multiple test on the different brands of waterproof sealers. The old school EPDM shower liners you use still look like they'll outlive any of the banding systems.
I would find a way to save that. 100%or not, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want to rip out the stone. No system guarantees that, but get a membrane 4 inches up that stone, yes in front of it. Cover it with a marble baseboard. Yes, there`s a nice marble baseboard that people use in bathrooms. That would probably not be code but it would save him 20k. It's worth trying IMO.
That's nice of you giving a discount to the property owner. As a realtor and property owner I know how stressful is to have a job done and re-do it, because someone didn't do the job right. economic distress. Kind of you to show to America what could be go wrong doing bathrooms.
Good video guys i always learn something new about tile & zhower pans & your son did awesome job on being the camera man ! Yal stay safe i hope yal get this job i like to see it demo & rebuild ! Daniel from central Mississippi
I am a 35 year tile setter from the Bay Area. That is probably the worst shower pan set I have ever seen…that can not be fixed…it’s a tear out for sure…
I don't understand why people use thinset to adhere strips of sheet membrane around the edges and corners, knowing that thinset wicks water right under the membrane. I prefer using liquid membrane to hold the strips and then another coat over the sheet membrane.
I like the cut the bottom and insert another tile . Go with a purposeful difference. My first shower I made the thinset mistake. Even worse used a full bucket to build up the shower seat. What a mess.
I would still cut out the bottom 4"-6" of the marble and fill with tile (after doing proper waterproofing) for a baseboard effect. Go full Bob Ross, if you have to. If the wall plumbing needs fixing or replacing, do it from the other side of the wall. Redoing drywall will be way cheaper and easier than redoing the marble.
Sooner or later we all will turn into Starr Tile type of an investigators. 🤣 I am suuuuuper curious if you got the job Isaac and we'll get to see part two of this marvel? Thanks for sharing TC. We ❤ you back.
I wonder if you can leave the marble and do tile redi in front of it. Then waterproof the seam and use marble sills to cover that portion. Do marble hexagon on the pan. Would save a ton if money. Also, use a good sealer over all the marble.
That’s one place homeowners shouldn’t try and save a dime. Imagine what that all cost and his time then add 20K to that to redo it all. Thats a beautiful car or rock for the wife.

My last run in with muscle spasms down there ended after I tagged along with my wife to one of her barre classes out of curiosity (think yoga crossed with karma sutra lol). @TileCoach Would love your A+ test on a microcement (SmartCrete) as a top coat waterproofing for a shower environment. becoming a popular product and looking for a base waterproofing like Ardex or Hydroban with a top coat of micro cement.
Got to ask, has any homeowner ever called you out for a repair, you do your inspection and then they tell you it's your fault and to pay for all of it?
I'm sure that's a big reason for the video. There's no denying what it looked like upfront and he explained on video before he started that he would have to take up some of it to see what was going on. The homeowner acknowledged it and shook hands.
Mastic cures behind porcelain. Just never supposed to go over 18” on any tile with mastic. I would use mastic all day long on a porcelain tile backsplash.
The homeowner seems like a nice and honest guy tho! But the work... I can't even. Mind blowing horrible floor and then top of the line walls, how did those two finishes even meet? Craziness!!
Help. I got a delta shower pan 60x32 and planning to tile. The flange has a lip on the top. I’m thinking I got the wrong type of shower pan. Do I get one with a straight flange or cut the lip off. If I cut the lip off the flange will only be 1”. If I got the wrong pan what brand would you recommend from Home Depot. Thanks for any suggestions.
I used to get static for taking my time with my work, but iver the years, I have many, many successful projects that don't need to be redone. So, my hunch about doing a slow job, but a good job is worth waiting for. Just sayin'
He may not have a -trap. It looks like a slab foundation, not sure and he may not have wanted to properly dig out concrete so that way pipe may grade 1/4” per foot. Gases from sewage is also dangerous to health. He may have also placed mastic on walls. Those walls need to be removed.
I do estimate for a Customer for 3 bathrooms laundry and entry lake 100 sf 1 custom pan for 19,000 and she said is expensive I live in Colorado just labor and Materials
I say use a marble cutter and cut the wall to a certain height and save that nice marble it is pricey and does not need to be all ripped out maybe cut the marble at about 3 feet height easy on the back and a great starting height to lay big tiles.
Watch out for your back bro, make sure it’s not a herniated disc, if you work it too bad it can become prolapsed and tear, and that pain will make the manliest man scream like a little girl. Just know if you start getting a pain / tug in your leg, it’s your back and you should go to the doctor. When it’s too bad you need emergency surgery, so be careful.
I have just gutted and re modeled two bathrooms in my house . With all the consents etc needed for a wet room like this I would never go there . I would also never buy a house with this sort of shower because it may look good from the outside but god knows what’s behind it all . I also seen way to many tradesmen cut corners to have them in my house . There is no fixing a shit show like that without an entire rebuild from ground up .

I’d never use mastic. Love GoBoard!
Great job on camera
Han is a good sport about that situation.
The homeowner seems like a nice and honest guy tho! But the work... I can't even. Mind blowing horrible floor and then top of the line walls, how did those two finishes even meet? Craziness!!
If he is a do it yourself, I wonder if he is also a “handyman” who has done jobs on other homeowners.
My guess? Homeowner did everything BUT had someone come out and measure/install the marble on top of his mess.
@@fd3871he said the walls were done first and then he did the floor. And he said “ I did” not “ I had it done”.. so maybe he tried his hand at it..
@@richeyrich2203They’re probably attached with duct tape
@@richeyrich2203 not sure we can trust a man who uses mastic as an adhesive in a wet area 🤣
Best way to prevent back issues is to work on your abs, which are stabilising.
Just sayin'
Can you give bluemax a water proof test?
10:26 why not to use liquid membrane instead of thinset? you smear it under and then over
A great mold treatment is RMR-86 Pro Instant Mold Stain & Mildew Stain Remover
He may not have a -trap. It looks like a slab foundation, not sure and he may not have wanted to properly dig out concrete so that way pipe may grade 1/4” per foot. Gases from sewage is also dangerous to health. He may have also placed mastic on walls. Those walls need to be removed.
I do estimate for a Customer for 3 bathrooms laundry and entry lake 100 sf 1 custom pan for 19,000 and she said is expensive I live in Colorado just labor and Materials
Buzz was Great!!!!!!
You can tell when homeowners do it cause they buy nicer materials. Handy men would never buy expensive materials.
Buzz is awesome 🎉
I'm still not convinced of these fabric pans. I'll stick to the solid rubber membrane. Do it right and never touch it again.
