$20,000 MISTAKE!!! Bad DIY Waterproofing Job on a Tiled Shower Pan

  • All too often homeowners don't take the proper steps when waterproofing their showers for tile installation. One missed step can lead to a catastrophic failure that requires the complete removal and replacement of the shower and plumbing.
Tile Redi pans eliminate the vulnerable failure points of other shower pan systems like Schluter Kerdi, RSS, Wedi, Hydroblock and Redgard. In those systems, the pan and wall connection is at or below the waterline of the shower and are often just connected in the field with sealant or thinset. Also, the drain is a separate piece and has to be secured to the pan with thinset or sealant. Installer error is common with these systems leading to catastrophic water and structural damage.
Tile Redi pans are one piece, pre-sloped, and have the drain integrated into the pan through the injection molding process. The integrated splash walls and curb make it so there are no connection points in the field at the vulnerable waterline.

Though I started using it on the advice from my father for severe elbow pain, glucosamine chondroitin with msm also relieved my lower back pain that I began having when I was about your age. Took about three weeks to build up in my system, but it worked so well that I now recommend it to all my friends. Wasn't the expensive stuff they advertise now, just a plain supplement from the 'superstore'. I'm now 62 and still working remodeling houses pain free.

Mastic mold is wild. I've ran into it a few times and damn, what a stench. I'm pretty confident you personally could cut that clean ~8" up all the way around. The risk would obviously be the removal considering natural stone can be very fragile. If you did manage to get it out, you could cut the strips into triangles or squares for resetting with a design. At that point, it's no different than other small format tiles meeting tubs or shower pans. Love the vids sir.

I know that if I were the homeowner, I'd be pig-headed enough to keep trying until I saved this mess, but, I would never have tried to do a tile shower pan in the first place. I have saved failing tile floors and walls and all of the ones I attempted are still holding up well. But a homeowner, one who can observe how a fix is holding up and make adjustments as necessary, can get away with experimentation that could get a contractor in trouble. I don't blame Issac for insisting on starting over if his name is going on it.

Here in Australia, we either use a prefabricated PVC or porcelain shower base or a mortar base or concrete flooring with puddle flanges about 1/4" below finished floor level height we then waterproof the entire base and walls in accordance with our codes and standards. Interesting to see how you blokes have various methods. Keep up the good work

It’s nice for stretching and something I use with my PT clients. But when we are talking real nerve impingement, you need a proper decompression table that you strap into and get pulled mechanically.
Additionally, it’s vital to protect lordosis the time; sitting, standing, moving and working. Meaning you sit with a proper lumbar pillow, you sleep with a proper sleeping lumbar pillow, and you move in ways using a straight back.
This will solve most cases of nerve impingement from anterior bulges and full herniations of the vertebrae.
Look into the McKenzie method of therapy and it might change your life (to anyone who reads this)

Did tile for 40 years. As soon as I saw the signs of water soaking up at the base of the wall, I knew there would be a nightmare under the floor and a total tear out and redo of the entire shower. The fact that they used mastic in a shower pan is comical. I'm an old school mud guy and also hot mopped pans. The new systems they use now days might meet building codes and be easier and cheaper, but still can't beat the old school hot mopped pan and floated shower walls.

@@Tactical-Black What combo? If you are asking how long a floated shower and a hot mopped pan last. It lasts longer than any other way of doing it. I've actually seen some last as long as the house itself. The plumbing will usually fail before the tile ever will, and that could end up being a cause to replace it. Depends. I've seen houses burn down in fires and the only thing left standing are the chimneys and the floated tile showers.

We purchased a home that a custom home builder built for his family, the guy put a lot of time and money in extras and details. BUT, his choice on tile contractor is questionable! We purchase the house when it was 11 years old, 3 years after purchasing, the large shower was leaking. I had a crew come in to demo all shower, tile floor, tile tub surround. And there it was, the pan liner was cut in all 4 corners, nails through liner right above pan and of course, roofing nails in the curb!
I am not a tile guy but my background being 30 years as an electrical contractor with 21+ years as electrical, mechanical and architectural engineer, I have run across many good contractors but have also run across so many idiots. I was hesitant on hiring a tile contractor to build another shower pan and install tile. After much research a couple years ago, I ordered a Tile-Redi custom size shower pan, installed it myself. What a piece of mind having that shower pan. The pan is very well built, and solid once installed. I believe in those pans to the point that I have another hotel to start designing this Fall, 210 rooms with all rooms having large showers. Probably going to spec Tile-Redi shower pans instead of site-built pans.

I would find a way to save that. 100%or not, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn't want to rip out the stone. No system guarantees that, but get a membrane 4 inches up that stone, yes in front of it. Cover it with a marble baseboard. Yes, there`s a nice marble baseboard that people use in bathrooms. That would probably not be code but it would save him 20k. It's worth trying IMO.

Interesting. Maybe not $20k but $15k, still gotta do the floor and all. Problem is would OG tile coach wanna put his name behind a job like that? He'd probably tell him what to do and find someone else to do it. That's what I'd do

The lower back thing sucks big time. All I can say, as someone who's struggled with that, is unconventional workouts are your friend. My last run in with muscle spasms down there ended after I tagged along with my wife to one of her barre classes out of curiosity (think yoga crossed with karma sutra lol). I'm pretty fit so it wasn't a work out in the strict sense...but I immediately isolated exactly where my tension/inflamation was actually coming from, which physical therapy, my doctor, and MRI etc had totally failed to do. I had it beaten back in about 2 weeks from exactly then, and only because I actually knew what I had to focus on. My ins co really probably should have sent that bougie all girls work out class a check lol.

Mastic grows mold in the buckets. I wouldn't suggest using it anywhere. Even on a back splash, its crap. I have thrown tons of mastic away half full because it molded in the bucket.

Help. I got a delta shower pan 60x32 and planning to tile. The flange has a lip on the top. I’m thinking I got the wrong type of shower pan. Do I get one with a straight flange or cut the lip off. If I cut the lip off the flange will only be 1”. If I got the wrong pan what brand would you recommend from Home Depot. Thanks for any suggestions.

That’s one place homeowners shouldn’t try and save a dime. Imagine what that all cost and his time then add 20K to that to redo it all. Thats a beautiful car or rock for the wife.
