  • I get the question all the time from Traditional Martial Artists "What are the Best Martial Arts Style to Combine?" and for those who are looking for modern Martial Arts to take, Ramsey Dewey has the answers!! We talk about what Modern Martial Arts Style you should look into next if you take Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Kyokushin Karate, Sport Karate, and even Capoeira! These styles like WTF and ITF taekwondo are very kick heavy and do a great job closing distance in fighting.. but they need a few things! Much like Wushu Kung Fu, Kyokushin, WKF Karate and Capoeira need holes filled. Some Modern Styles we suggest here are Boxing, Freestyle Wrestling, Judo, Muay Thai and Kickboxing!!

I agree with your stances on kung fu. I personaly think it is a great marshellart to train in, but only if you know what real life combad is like. If you don't know how to fight in a real fight wushu becomes a dancing style instead of a marshellarts. Cause if you have never fought a real fight before they basicly learn you how to dance, but if you have you can use your new found skill and transulate them for combad as wel making them effectif. Sow I completly agree with you if your trained in kung fu do some kickboxing as wel then combine the 2 and you be flying around like a butterfly, blocking punshes left and right, while using all kind of uniek fighting technieks and basicly you become kind of kick ass. It will give you the space to actueely put your techniek to the test and you learn how to make them work in true combad. Instead of just performing a techniek you can use them on a actueel living enemy and that will make all the differnce in my opion.

Because they're all actual martial artists, and as Ramsey often says, martial arts is the pursuit of the truth. There are notable exceptions, but if you're a real martial artist chances are you've been humbled plenty of times in sparring or competition. And if you can take a right hook to the chin or being thrown on your head, chances are you can handle some jokes and/or constructive criticism. Kwon Kicker, Rokas, and Rob from McDojolife are much the same way and have been involved in collaborations.

In 100 years there will be only one martial art. forget culture and tradition. If everybody cross trains, in time tradition wont mean anything, next they start getting rid of the kata, like they did in kudo karate. We will have one mut mix and probably call it mma. Damn mma swallowing up all the Styles and shitting on tradition hahaha. Styles will be defined only by the rules as a sport. Basically they will call it boxing or wrestling .wrestling will consist of juso freestyle sambo etc.. boxing karate savate muy Thai etc.

I'm glad to have had a profesor who actually did take quite some time explaining how some moves would work for real, and in the roda we had plenty of takedowns happen. Not constantly because the comraderie aspect still made it that constantly throwing your partner to the floor would kind of mess up the flow and play, but if someone kept making themselves open, you'd drop them on their butts and pick em back up.
That said he actually did have a bit more of a focus on Angola though, and a lot of that is really close range and a lot of just snaking around each other, very low to the ground, very occasionally a kick or a strike but Angola is 100% about positioning yourself and not letting someone else into an advantageous position over you.

The same thing can be said about most Martial Arts, even Karate or Kung Fu. For example, sometimes what looks like a kick is actually a footsweep or hip throw. Compare a back kick to the Judo throw called Uchi Mata, for one example.

I'm a Wushu guy and thanks to Sanda training, I've been punched in the face a lot (thankfully controlled mostly by trusted sparring partners)! It's been very educational in testing what works and what doesn't from forms! If we want to talk about fighting seriously, sparring is a must for Chinese martial artists, traditional or modern Wushu or otherwise! Also ACL tears are a huge problem in the sport of Wushu, both in Taolu (forms) and Sanda (sparring). We also need to evaluate our practices and training methods, then what we're doing wrong or what we're overlooking to find out what causes these kinds of injuries.

What he said about the BJJ and Capoeria crossover is very very true. Some of the baddest BJJ guys I've ever rolled with are UK based Brazilians who cross train BJJ/Lutre Livra and Capoeira, their speed, strength and flexibility is something else, and because a few BJJ takedowns are based on Capoeria ones those movements are drilled into their heads to the point of they are taking you to the ground. It made me wonder if i was doing the same sport as them, in all seriousness if you show up at a BJJ tournament and one of the guys there is doing a Capoeria warm up, you're going to be having a bad day.

So it ends up being a really well rounded place to train. They have added things like basic boxing drills into the TKD syllabus & takedowns. So much more than what you need to do wtf comp fighting.

This was a great video. No martial art is complete on its own. Even if you learn from someone who is a "complete fighter", they will teach you either what works for them or what they were taught. Neither is perfect to make you a complete fighter too. We are all built differently. Where is your center of balance? How long are your legs in relation to your arms? Your back? Do you have especially quick reflexes? How is your pain tolerance in various parts of your body that are good for absorbing impact? There are hundreds of variables that each person must explore for themselves -- the best way to do this is usually to learn as many styles as possible, and learn them well enough to sift through and find what works for you. If you are looking to get 80% of the way there quickly, this video is for you.

That's really interesting about capoeira being wrestling because I started learing some this week and one of the first things I did on the heavy bag was go from a low leg kick into a rising kick and then I went for a body lock. It just felt right even though it wasn't part of the syllabus of movement. Knowing that it can be a useful wrestling tool make that instinct make so much more sense now.

My background is Kyokushin ,Muay Thai and Judo in Hawaii. You guys got it spot on with this analysis. Kyokushin I feel will toughen you up more then most martial arts but you need to learn how to slip and dodge head punches. Combining it with the Muay Thai clinch and Judo throws, will compliment the Kyokushin aggression perfectly and train you to know how to deal with head punches.

Excellent conversation! The analysis that both of you are bringing here is concise, but really deep. As someone who practiced Capoeira, hearing Ramsey say wrestling threw me for a loop. But hearing his explanation, it makes perfect sense. Also, trying to find the use of techniques in forms means a lot too. Hope to see more collaborations in the future!

Kyokushin in my opinion a good hybrid to cross train would be judo just because a lot of kyokushin guys fight on the inside so much and are always fighting in the pocket so I think those slams and trips would come in handy to learn along with kyokushin techniques

This was a pleasure to watch guys. Some really good insights as usual. I was a little surprised at the end with the Karate analysis and style paring. My background is in Hawaiian kenpo with a good deal of point sparring experience with pure karate guys. Our curriculum has a lot of judo take downs and aiki jujutsu in it. Point tournaments vary in rules of course, but to be clear, the WKF (what will soon be seen in the Olympics) does allow face shots and takedowns with a strike and it is light contact (as you stated). As someone who’s always reassessing my weaknesses and the holes in my game, I was surprised that Ramsey picked Judo. I’d say Judo is already heavily embedded in Karate, especially at the WKF level. All those guys are proficient in Judo. You will see tons of sweeps and trips, and tai otoshi take downs are a dime a dozen. You’ll even see o goshi and seoi nage. Anyway, I’m surprised being a wrestler and all, Ramsey didn’t pick wrestling, shoot fighting, or BJJ. To me it’s the ground game that seems to missing most in karate, and that’s the direction I’ve decided to head to become more well-rounded. Thanks for this interesting discussion that uplifted the value of each art and offered honest and balanced commentary! Oss!

Also, I typically fight from a side stance because I'm a defensive fighter so it appears studying Judo was also the right choice! Thanks for the info, and you have a new subscriber! 🤜🏿🤚🏿

I feel like studying the other arts would benefit you into combining their strengths or main techniques into your own form of martial art.
Also, bodytype is also taken into account as not all body types can perform a spinning back kick or a high jump kick. I feel that depending on the body that you have you must adapt to your own form of martial art that feels comfortable.
Darth Vader would be a example as his form of lightsaber combat is Form 5. Its a powerful style which requires alot of strength to strike the opponent and perfect counter attacks against lightsaber and blaster. However, when his body became burned and crippled from the lavapit he wasn't able to perform high acrobatic jumps or move with blazing speed like he used to due to his prosthetics slowing him down. He ended up having to relearn every form of lightsaber combat from form 1 all the way to form 5. From that, he used his own variation of form 5 which is simple pin point attacks and powerful force abilities to end the fight as quickly as possible. He ended up surpassing his former self and became a skilled jedi hunter.
Moral of the story, a martial artist is just as good as the art he or she has developed on their own. Like a painter with their own unique style of painting or a writer with their own unique writing that bends and twists to their whim. I would just take the concept of other styles and integrate a different unique form of martial art.

My background is Shotokan, Kenpo, and few other styles , I studied WTF Taekwondo to help me with my footwork, for kickboxing matches that I competed in while I was in College. I think it a good idea to blend styles and for each person to find what works for them with their body types.

For wushu, I think that sanda is an obvious contender, as it fits in with the characteristics of kung fu striking (obvious reasons), but I actually think, assuming sanda is already a part of the program, that dutch kickboxing would be a good pair. It allows for the knees and elbows which are so often left out of sanda, despite being such big parts of arts such as baji, and emphasises striking for the purpose of knockouts, instead of the bad habits sanda can form with striking for points

Great stuff! As a Kung Fu guy, I totally agree with punching Wushu people in the head (oh wait... that didn't sound right). Having said that, there is a world of difference between competition Wushu stuff and what I would call Kung Fu ;) Re a follow up video, I would be very interested in that! Awesome idea :)

For traditional systems of kung fu I’d say boxing combines amazingly especially with systems like Xingyi quan ,Zanshou quan and Wing chun the boxing basic strikes work great for teaching beginners how to fight quickly and are great fundamental strikes to use in a match or street fight and the traps ,parry’s ,throws, foot work and aggressive mentality of kung fu compliment each other beautifully

If I had to guess, I'd say wrestling as that is what is lacking in a lot of the training and would lead to a better understanding of a lot of the hand forms, but a good understanding of boxing with a style like Wing Chun would definitely be useful as well.
