I would only request that the cross is moved a little to the left on that S tier. Really bugging my ocd hardcore

You forgot the Falcon Punch (S+ tier)
Spinning back fist S tier. All others F list.

I tried that slap technique too
but it didn’t work until I yelled “STOCKTON!!”

I tried it in a street figut and he kept choking me out
You forgot the most powerful strike in existence...
The skadoosh pinky hold from Kung Fu Panda.
AH how could I have forgotten?!
The wuxi finger hold
That's in its own category, so high up its offscreen. He just didn't include him placing it in the video because it goes without saying obviously. So dangerous it's illegal in every sport ever.

Yeah I didn't see any ranking for the Serious Punch. And what about Consecutive Serious Punches??
The hammerfist/jab combo is closest to a flicker jab in boxing terms
True true
The flicker jab is almost a hammer fist and back fist except that it hits you the way a jab does.
@@colorado2455 good point, you can hit with the hammerfist or backfist when you land a flicker jab but the direction of the attack is still linear, like any other jab, whereas a true backfist has a more round rather than linear trajectory
@@pilot.wav_theory oh yeah the trajectory, the backfist and hammer fist have more of a horizontal trajectory and in some cases can be linear. The flicker trajectory is more diagonal and upwards.
Totally agree with the 1" punch's placement. It's less a punch and more a conditioning exercise. It's a good way to get new students over their fear of hitting the bag/makiwara
For sure 👍👍
Getting to this a year late, but who knows? 1 inch punch is a training tool, not something you use in a fight. It's about training your body to deliver maximum power over the shortest distance. Ideally, you should be able to do it with any part of your body (shoulder, back, hip, butt, whatever) and at no range. Bruce was awesome, but never went deep enough to learn that. Look up a dude named Chen Bu if you want to see some good demonstrations of inch power type stuff. You'll like him, Seth. He's chubby. And surprising.
@@brianwatson4119 Bruce was an actor. Nobody would take him seriously if he came out today
Boxer here. I would have put only the jab as S tier and the cross and hook as A tier just to distinguish how important the jab is. You can have not the best cross or hook and be okay but you ain't got no jab you ain't going nowhere in boxing, generally speaking. The rest of the list is nothing I have an opinion on as they either aren't punches thrown in boxing or I, for the most part, agree with their rankings in your list.
Well of course, when you’re only allowed to punch that range domination is vital!! Thanks for watching 🙏
Yeah, since A tier was barely even used.
Agree 100% with this
It's your most thrown punch, it's your fastest punch, your longest punch, it sets up every other punch by landing or even just obscuring their vision if you smother them with it, you can throw it while moving in any direction, you can condition people with a soft jab and when you need to hit them with a hard one they wont expect it- like.. it's not even close. it NEEDS to be in its own tier above the rest.
The jab is so incredibly useful like omfg
Jabs don't work as well in MMA. Because u have to plant your lead leg to jab, that's asking to get your lead leg low kicked. But still a great punch. So they should all be in the same tier.
The tier god is back at it again. Let’s see who gets mad this time lmfao
HAha me, I’m first to be mad
I do UFC and I find this highly inaccurate lol
😂😂😂
im sooo mad cause the bolo punch is primarily a body shot. And seeing people through it to the head reminds me of Jack 5 s wind up punch from teken. XD i agree with the ranking though.
😂😂 sorry bub
I like punches where your thumb is inside your fist. It is hilarious when people do it and mess up their hand.
That’s not safe lol
How about ranking blocks or ranking stances?
Love the idea!
Great video idea, would love to see his take on the stances 👌
Block with face S tier or we riot
That’s a cool idea. Though some blocks would vary based on stance. Cool to see people thoughts on it though.
@@zachariaravenheart honestly even though its a joke ive found if you know how to neck twist its the most effective block you can learn since it gives people a false sense of security that there punches are hurting you and just when they think your stunned you can throw at the very least a three hit combo followed up by a grapple or takedown into another flurry so on and so forth
Hope your ready for the 500 kung fu guys explaining to you the one inch punch is a exercise to generate power and not a actual punch
Hahaha I’m prepared, they’re already mad from my last tier video
I hate both that kung fu is so looked down on and that its people have such a bad reputation. Like, come on, guys. Grow up.

“Jab should be in a tier “ one of my friends said
Hmmm, you’ll have to see what I give it!
I’ve said it from the very beginning; the jab can be nothing less than S tier. Did you know you can even knock people out with a jab? Now you do. I always knew that all along.
It’s S!
A jab is used to test your opponent's defenses, measure the distance to your opponent, stop your opponent's movement towards you and also as an offensive punch when used with a step. A fighter who knows how to jab properly would be a formidable opponent. In my opinion the jab is the best punch you can learn.
Then, he lost a few teeth
As a bouncer with a Background in Krav Maga and MMA, i also considered Wing Chuns 'Chain Punches' as a great technique 'in the streets'. In MMA competitions those were quite useless, straight jab/cross/lowkick combinations were my best choice in the Ring
Very nice!!
Why is it useful in the steets but not in the octagon? Is it because of the gloves, or the skills or something else?
Curious on that too
@@RK-rb2jr "Wing Chun Chain punches" are mostly a surprising/blitzing technique in close distance. They may work "In the streets" to overcome a opponent (there is also a different level of fear of hitting and get hit without gloves), but in a mma bout, your opponent is very aware to not even let you come into this distance.
I don’t find myself wanting to practice them from what I’ve seen of them
Your opening beat drop on the kata punch. Thank you icy mike.
Hahaha boom
I think the hammerfist lacks reach as a jab. And the angle it’s thrown is easily parriable.
Great video! I love how you explained why one inch punch is in F tier instead of just straight out calling it bull crap.
Hahaha thanks!
I've gotten back into Muay Thai for about half a year and I immediately had to agree with all of this lol.
Makes me feel more professional, thank you for that. Definitely subbed.
Thanks for making this video now I’m gonna start doing half of these in street fights.

Thank you so much 😀
Love the rankings it’s spot on I’d probably would had put the hook in the A tier just in my experience straights are thee most reliable if you know how to jab. But agree that with most ppl that would be their favorite and most used punch.... Loving the content very entertaining and I’m finding myself laughing at a lot of lil jokes you throw in keep these bangers coming 🔥💪🏼
That’s fair!!
Thanks my friend!
I think putting the one-inch punch in F tier as it's generally presented is perfectly reasonable. My understanding of it is that it was never meant as a combative technique per se, but rather as a demonstration or exercise to remind students of proper form.
If I'm not mistaken, one of Icy Mike's collabs with Sergio had the latter demonstrating the practical application of the one-inch punch and it wasn't like what people actually picture when it's done in demos. I don't recall the specifics, unfortunately.
I think a couple people have commented that! Makes sense!
One inch punch should be E or D tier cos it's useless but cool af
More of a push technique, lead with a guy shot, do not fully retract, and use the 1 inch to push opponents.
Man You do a good Job for people with your vídeos, greetings from Colombia.
I love you Seth you me taught me a lot about martial arts but every spinning back fist I’ve thrown I’ve landed and it is very fast and every time I have landed it, it puts people down thank you I love this and you 🤘
Have you done a hand strike tier list?
Like knife hand, Phoenix fist etc, stuff from traditional martial arts.
Loved the video and your bolo punch with out the small rotation from the elbow is a sin
I haven’t been, noted
The best bolo punch in boxing was by the great Sugar Ray Leonard. It's almost a Donkey Kong punch the way he did it.

The bolo punch looks similar to the "karate uppercut" I have in my dojo, and it's definitely an A tier punch! Also jab is definitely S tier! Some of the punches you went over I never heard, and they were cool to see, great vid! 👍

@@SenseiSeth nah, ive seen you guest on other channels and i guess i just never got around to your channel.

Hahah thanks my friend. Appreciate ya!
I vote Hammerfist a tier higher just because I come from an art that deals with it a lot and I know its ins and outs. Other than that, the list looks appropriate.
What style is that?
@@SenseiSeth Basically most filipino arts, if not all, use it. But the style itself is Panantukan, or just "filipino boxing" or "dirty boxing". It's the most useful thing in that art, and it can be set up to work in stand-up fighting and not for clinch or ground and pound.
Oh that’s sick! That makes sense. If you can find a good video to help me get a better idea I’d love to see them!
@@SenseiSeth Don't want to brag, but there probably aren't many performances of that quality on yt. So sorry on that front. One of the coaches that I trained Modern Arnis with trained boxing for 10+ years before he started FMA for another 10, so naturally he taught boxing mixed with the traditional panantukan stuff for the unarmed portion. It most likely won't be the same as things you can see online.
@@SenseiSeth A quick combo I can give you would be a jab, cross, and then a right hammerfist going downwards to the trapezius, continuing from that cross right when the cross lands
Now we need a tier list of all the different elbows!
Another S tier video may man! You ever do the inward hammer fist? It's a nice one for non trained people who just want a few moves.

I do Boxing and you are spot on about the cross, hook and jab. The cross and hook can be used as a combo and jab at keeping your opponent at bay and wearing him out, before setting up for a power cross or combination....Good Stuff!
simplicity is key!
I love this series, man...
More to come!
In the Alexander Gufferson vs Glover Teixeira fight Alex finished with 3 bolo punches in a row followed by a hook punch probably the best example. Great ko
That was the exact fight I was thinking of. One of my favorite finishes
Ive never landed a hammer fist but I land backfists all the time so I would've ranked same as hammer fist
Fair point!! Some of these punches def work better for dif people
I'd love to see you do a tier list where you give your opinion on the material Icy Mike covered in "Palm Strikes, Karate Chops, and Spinning Stuff for Self Defense?". Basically he discussed his feelings on all of the "miscellaneous" or non-punching hand strikes in martial arts: palm strikes, ridge hands, knife hands, etc. He also covered the backfist and hammerfist, but you already have those here of course. I feel like maybe you might have different opinions on some of those strikes given your background?
Also, any chance of a discussion of the different kinds of elbows? For instance: cutting vs. smashing, lead elbow "stabs", 12-6, etc.
Love your content as always. Keep it coming!
Idk if I’ve seen that, send me the link!

You know I actually stunned my sparring partner with spinning backfist beacuse he didnt know i let him put a cross on me on the face, As I let my head spin, my body follows turning into a spinning backfist. Hard to argue with the list here. the hook can be devastating, the jab allows one to set pace, etc. As a taller longer guy myself the bolo has the ability to close. Nothing to pick with. And I'm happy you included the shovel hook, it can be nasty. It's versatile, and works as both an entry and an exit in clinch work (MT), when following an appropriate combo and feints. You can sort of disguise it. Great video.

At least I was hoping you knew something about Kick Boxing or Muay Thai to be able to talk about this, but Kung Fu ??? 😆👌

A spinning back fist is like a tornado kick in taekwondo, but with your fist or a back hand smack that's what it reminds me of. Just my 2 cents.

Yes!!!
Glad u put the hook up high it's such a versatile punch n one of my main go 2s when I completed but my hook is like a hybrid between a standard hook n a inside knife hand use to lean back n throw It over ppls jabs alot was very effective for me
I would put uppercut at A it has mor utility than the over hand as it can be used to stuff an opponent that's ducking in for a take down up close and if you start with hands down (base on you style) it can hit the chin with out your opponent seeing it. In my opinion at least.
That’s fair! Hard to argue there
When learning JKD, I was taught to throw a hook punch with my fist vertical and not horizontal and the footwork was less static. Whacking pads like that felt great; I'd be interested to see you play with it and see what you think of it!
I like both! It depends for me of the range of the attack, close, palm jn.. far, palm down
That’s how we throw the hook also. I train in Thai kickboxing.
Once again a fun video, thank you. I would put the hook in A tier rather than S with jab ad cross simply because I feel it is much easier to break your fingers with it if you don't have the proper angle on landing.
I’m waiting for jab, already irate about what position you put it in if not S. Great videos btw. Edit: So relieved.
Do one with all 8 limbs next
You got it!
The jab should be ss
Can’t argue with that
Only person I've ever seen utilise the superman punch properly is GSP, its greatest benefit is that the leg looks like the startup of a kick so you fake out the opponent while most people use it cause it looks cool

Hey! Neat video.
Just one note: You can throw the standing (not ground and pound) hammerfist moving outside to in, the opposite motion of a backfist.
It's a niche usage, but I would argue it's far more powerful and effective than throwing it like a bizarre backfist

@@SenseiSeth Hell yeah do what that other guy said. NIKO IS STYLE IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD! Kengan Asura doesn't really have a lot of standout moves outside of Niko style though. Only in the sense that it uses a lot of real martial arts that is.
@@thehooblah1053 no read the manga
With hammerfists and backfists I think you’re not taking into account the versatility of when they could be used. Instead of it being a standalone technique, try parrying a punch and going straight into a backfist as your opponent pulls their hand back. It’s easily a B ranked technique, but standalone I could see how you put them as D.
Sure, but still Backfist isn’t hitting as hard as hammer. I see what you’re saying though
Honestly, I'm just glad that jab, cross and hook are s-tier. Pretty good list.

The best punch is the one you can land without breaking something while landing it.
Says the guy with wimpy wrists.
On the other hand my wimpy wrists can land a nasty chop with the radius bone to the back of the head or behind the ear as a part of kombo due to all the muscle not beign on the way.
:D
Toni Heikkila did you see the end of the video? Lol but also, sure
Thank you for putting the jab punch in the S tier category! The jab is the most efficient punch you can throw.
I love to throw the back fist right after a lead hook. And I sometimes throw the jab like a back fist, depending on my angle!
Yes!
What would you rate chain punch?
D
@@SenseiSeth safe
Jacob Cumberbatch hahaha I mean, I could go lower tbh.. probably F if I was being honest
By chain punch you mean the kind used in wing chun right? I know it can be good but only in some situations, or if you really want someone to be in pain and feel every punch kinda like a 1in punch
Maybe, idk I’m not a proponent of it tbh. Maybe I just haven’t seen a good application for it
The spinning back fist is far from slow, unless you suck. It's S-tier. It's the most useful technique I know. I've won multiple matches and tournaments with it. It's very versatile and applicable. The key is to not throw it with that awkward step, but more by staying still and taking the step after landing/missing. It's a very underrated and misunderstood punch. When do right no can defend.
I’m sure you rock at it 👍👍
@@SenseiSeth I'm sure as well! Might post a tutorial at some point, since I think there's a lot to uncover about it. It's actually a trademark of the karate style I practice, it's been a curriculum technique all the way from the 60's.
Hyrräpää22 do it 👍
I'm a tall guy (190cm), my coach is much smaller than me (160cm). Every Sunday he gives us one round of sparring with him. Goes until either time's up, someone taps, or someone concedes. His favourite thing to do to us taller people is shovel hook to the liver. But what's great is that after every round, he talks to us about what we did well and where we messed up. Turns out I still need to get good at protecting myself against body shots.
That’s awesome! Body shots are tough for y’all guys
agree about the Hammer , one of the recent fights (I think it was a UFC fight) and one gut was throwing a Hammer Fist (from Standing , instead of a Jab a couple times)
you mean: sport punches were your hands are protected
and your list when they’re not? What changes?
Spinning back fist is pretty good if your opponent goes really far back. If you miss when they move back, you can follow up with the spinning
Jab is what ever is beyond S tier. Literally the single most important strike there is
I find the most useful punch is the classic karate reverse punch. At short ranges it is an uppercut into the liver. At medium ranges it is a vertical punch into the ribs. at longer ranges you can put it into the bladder or the solar plexus and at long ranges it acts as a cross. It is very rare that you throw it from the hip. On he jab, while commonly used in the ring, if you use it on the street , the fight should be over before you get a chance to get into a stance where you can use it.
The hammer fist works wonders on the street. As a Paramedic firefighter I have used it many times on various combative people, it works great at shocking the biceps of someone trying to grab you. Also works good to the head used with control to stun someone without causing a lot of damage. Great technique
Still one thing: It is actually a question of the rules about "backfist or hammerfist": In some Kickboxing games it is NOT allowed to use the Hammerfist, because you have to hit with the padding of the glove like you would with a backfist.
(in MMA it is both allowed).
One reason I would prefer a hammerfist in both gloved and bareknuckle situations is the different position of the elbow and the forearm. It may be very effective to strike with your knuckles doing a backfist, but you have more control with a hammerfist, can decide how much you extend your arm, also your elbow joint and fist is in better position to prevent injuring yourself. And of course, your forearm bone may still inflict some damage if your hammerfist is to close.
Yea I realized that while editing but nobody comments if I fix it lol
Nevermind. I think the "tier"-rating shouldn't even be taken too serious, but is a good thing for everyone to exchange their opinions.
I mean: What punches work best for someone is very dependend on the game he is in, but also on individual skills and even body features.
Also there are different versions of some punches that may work better or worse, like "horizontal jab" or "vertical jab". "corkscrew jab and cross" and so on.
Hahaha I see what you’re saying, all good
Example: Since you are crosstraining in Muay Thai now, have you already seen how some Muay Thai guys punch their jab and cross? because their fist are often horizontal in their guard, they rotate their fist with the thumb pointing to the floor at the ending point, to keep it real straight. Sometimes punching mechanics are depending on the guard (and hand rotation in it) or stance of a fighter.
Huh, your description of the technique used in the one inch punch made me realize something about one of my own signature punches (it's not on your list because I learned it from fencing, which most people would most likely see no connection to unarmed martial arts). I've done the one inch punch before, but used a different technique. Rather than push off the back leg, I would root myself and just use raw tension. I never used it against an opponent, but was able to do a speed break. Normally, a speed break is breaking a board that is in freefall before it hits the ground, but in this case, the board was held in place flimsily with two fingers. However, the technique you used was very similar to my, well don't know how describe it other than an impaling counterpunch. It's movement uses the same hand to block an incoming attack and immediately lunge before they can bring their limb back into place. Its striking power uses a similar foundation as the one inch punch, pushing off with the back leg and shifting the upper body, except it is done with a much larger distance than one inch. Depending on how it is delivered, I've had it knock my opponent across the room or crumple, causing a TKO. This is in WTF Taekwondo, so this is striking the torso and striking padded armor, so its effect would most likely be more pronounced against an opponent not wearing said armor.
Bruce Lee used lots of fencing movements!
@@SenseiSeth well, technically speaking, sabre fencing is the fastest martial art in the world, and Bruce was certainly known for his ridiculous speed.
I love the Bolo punch it always throws off their timing. It starts like a regular uppercut feint then when they bite, they get bit with it.
Awesome list, man! 2 rare strikes not mentioned are the corkscrew (cousin to the overhand) and the casting (inverse of the hammerfist).
Both would probably be low-mid tier.
GGG is probably the first person that comes to mind for the corkscrew. I think Fedor Emelianenko used a hybrid casting/bolo punch in 1 of his fights if memory serves.
