Can’t wait to hear about your visit with Marilyn!!!❤
I’m so excited!
Lovely video, Lindy! I love the story about Anne Fleming remembering you and your review from 12 years ago. Just wonderful!😊
Thanks Pat. I was flabbergasted. When I review books, I have readers, not authors, in mind. So on the rare occasion when I hear from an author who paid attention to one of my reviews, it’s a bit of a jolt. Also a reminder to be as evenhanded as possible because authors’ books are like their babies.
@@lindysmagpiereads yes, absolutely! I can’t imagine you being anything but judicious and even-handed in a review….
Hi Lindy, Lovely video and I love the story about how you were remembered by the author for your blog post. I’m excited about My trip to Victoria and meeting you is the highlight. Aloha dear friend.
See you soon!
I've been curious about The Morningside; thanks for sharing the samples. Oh, Curiosities has a cool cover but It sounds pretty tough.
Curiosities is actually a delight… except for that grim seafaring section. A whole village dying of plague sounds grim too, but it’s told in a way that emphasizes the wonder of the two children who survive. And go on to be the central characters of the novel.
I found Prairie Edge on CloudLibrary! I also found Conor Kerr’s Old Gods on Hoopla. 💜
Good news! Isn’t Cloud Library for titles in high demand? Or am I thinking of a different app?
@@lindysmagpiereads I don’t know how titles end up on CloudLibrary. 🤷♀️
That bit of Morningside you shared sounds amazing! I haven't seen anyone else mention it, though of course Tea Obreht is a familiar name.
What a lovely bookish serendipitous encounter with Fleming, the bookish world is a small neighborhood at times eh.
I’m glad the bits I shared from Morningside caught your interest. I think the folkloric elements would appeal to you also.
As to Anne Fleming recognizing my identity as a blogger just from my first name… I was so astonished I could barely speak! I know Lindy isn’t a common name, but still!
I couldn't quite tell if you were giving Morningside a thumbs up or not. I've not had luck with her writing previously, but I love a dystopian book. Do i give it a shot?
Absolutely give it a shot! I was impressed by the way the climate dystopian setting is in the background and more of a mood than playing with a possible (or likely) future scenario. The interpersonal relationships are a big draw in this novel, as well as the folkloric elements.
What did you think of Inland? I picked up a copy from a little free library but have never got around to reading it.
I looked up my review from 5 years ago:
Alternating storylines told from close perspective of 2 main characters in 19th c America: Lurie, orphaned as a child shortly after emigrating from the Ottoman Empire, & Nora, a settler struggling with regrets in Arizona Territory. The 3rd MC is Burke, a camel. It was well worth getting to know them in a tale that gradually gains momentum. I could feel the want, “That vast & immutable want everybody, dead or alive, carried with them all the time.”
@@lindysmagpiereads thanks. That's encouraging.
