Suggestion: place tops and stumps on the downslope side of the road. It helps with the eroding soil from the disturbed road surface and provides small game habitat. They will eventually rot and provide good nutrition for the roadside plants. Sometimes even a barrier if you do slide off the road.The USFS publications on roads, particularly out-sloped roads, are very helpful. They have compiled lots of how to guides for road construction and maintenance. I have enjoyed your videos!

Love the video. I have been thinking of saying this for awhile and seeing the cut-in of Riley building a road as a little kid, says it is the right time. Riley, your mom and dad provided you and your siblings with opportunities to learn. You water and snow skied, hiked, biked, and camped and built stuff. Your mom brought you and your siblings into the hardware store as little kids and let you pick out your “toys”. I remember reeling off rope and chain and wondering how you would use it.
I loved when parents brought their kids into the hardware store and made it a teaching moment. It was especially important for ranching families to offer this kind exposure to their kids. I admire anyone with a can do spirit. It was fun waiting on those kids who grew up around hardware. Later on they made the best customers.
When I told Chuck a year ago about your channel, he said, “If Riley is half as smart as his dad, Riley will get it done.” Note to Courtney: You are the wisest choice one could make in a life and work partner. You two are living and teaching your dream and bringing us along for the ride. I am sitting in a warm house cheering you on!
If you need to install more studs or for track inspection, raise front off ground with blade rotate 180 use bucket to lift other end. You can then rotate tracks in place without driving all over!;)

My dad introduced me to your channel a few weeks ago. Yesterday we were just talking about how good of a purchase your excavator was. It's amazing how versatile it is. Without it, you would likely have perpetually sore backs.
At the time we were worried we would regret the purchase, but we have had ZERO regrets. The only negative is that we can never not have one again! 😆

Let's not forget that the excavator has good resell value once you think you no longer need it. You also have the option of renting it out to make some money that way. Surely, it would pay for itself in no time! Great work team 😁

As a veteran of many years working in the snow, a couple suggestions. First Sorrel Carabou boots are good. Make sure to take the wool liners out EVERY night to dry out. Also, a pair of propylene socks first then some Smartwool socks. The liners will keep the moisture away from your feet. Onward!

I total agreed with the model and size when you bought the excavator. I run mini's building trails for the USFS and that machine is perfect for you property. You 2 have done amazing learning and running that machine, great job from a seasoned operator.
Cortney look into a drip torch for burning piles. It will change your life! Coming from a wildland fire fighter.

@@AmbitionStrikes I was also going to suggest a drip torch, Between that and some burn fuel (we use 50/50 used motor oil and gas) it is amazing what you can get going when the material is soaked and it is pouring rain. Oregon rain will teach you all the tricks to doing things in the wrong weather. @Scott Johnson glad to see another fire fighter giving tips, my family has been in fire since 1975. I am just a volunteer with the local rural fire department but my old man still goes out as a medical unit leader on fires nation wide every year at the age of 75. My sister was a summer seasonal with the USFS for 4 years in college on a type 6 and then a type 3 engine. Stay safe out there!

Keep in mind, drainage. Maybe some downslope ditches on the road and some cut overs to allow rain/snowmelt to move downhill without washing out the roadway.
I don't ever buy vehicles new, but that dig thingy really makes life easier so definitely a good buy if one can afford it. You guys get stuff done!
Greetings from Norway. This is very similar to what I had on my farm/off grid property. My best advise is to slope the road - and make a lot of trenches along both sides - which will help keeping the dirtroad dry and less ice. Cool to follow your projects…. Merry Christmas (soon)….

Another cold feet stopper is use the foam trays from your meat purchase, cut in the shape of your boot liner. Install them in your boot then put your liner in. Works well at 30 below Celsius .
Glad to see risk reduction at the hair-pin curve. (Maybe one of many?) Yours is the second YT I saw today with real snow! And, we had actual rain in La Mesa today, not our usual 1/4 inch drizzle. I went out so I could hear the rata-tap-tap-tap on my REI jacket hood, checking our storm water diversion system. Thank you for bringing us along!
It rained a bunch right after this video and most of our snow melted! The Snowverlander is going to have to wait a little bit longer. 🥲

Little Riley building his road was so cute and nostalgic, it seems being productive and creative was his destiny. Good call on the excavator as it looks like it'll pay for itself and then some. Still a ways to go on the barn apartment but the way you two work that'll come sooner than we think. I'd suggest a yacht as a future project but that's probably not to practical for your location, so how about a 2-person wooden canoe instead? Thanks for the entertainment and sharing your experiences & education, stay warm and stay safe!

You can use the same idea on your shoes and boots. Use hex-headed sheet metal screws. They don't have to be hardened metall. Use a socket of the right size to install the screws. Take the screws out of your shoes and boots when the snow melts.

Riley there is no need to widen the rode! Just put a few of the excavator ice suds into Courtney's Lexus tires! Try not to bank the turns to the outside, rather to the inside. that way you will never slide towards the slope and since your turns are on a good incline, the water still will drain

If you put too many in, you reduce the pressure on each one and may slide! Well thats what happens on snow groomers. You can get chains for your boots too.
the snow on the roof of the shop indicates you did a great job insulating.
Perhaps a couple of studs in Rileys boots too?
Kubota or Takeuchi excavators do away with mechanical repairs. Good buy. Good bye!
In 2014, I bought a 6,000 pound Kubota mini excavator in order to prepare the site for my future construction, with the idea of reselling it when the work was finished.
I built my house in 2015 and finalized the earthworks in 2016.
I couldn't bring myself to part with this machine, it has become so useful in the accomplishment of my various tasks.
The excavator has become my most faithful helper, always available when I need extra arms.
When I look at the market for used excavators in my area, I consider that I could easily resell it for more than I paid in 2014.
Put chains on the tires of that snowverlander, and it will take that corner like it was dry. Slow and steady, and it'll seem like middle of summer traction.
I am loving this journey. Keeps getting better.
Add some marker delineator’s so you know the edge of the road . In a winter wonderland and a blizzard its easy to loose your way.

You can also rent out the excavator or trade labor on it for good stuff you want or labor you need. I rented my bobcat out every summer for some serious cash, and some building projects. Barter is the Idaho way.

I hope those studs work well for you and don’t start cracks in the bonded rubber since a steel bar goes across under each cleat. We just bought a pair of new rubber Kubota tracks for our 12k lb machine at the tune of $6k. I couldn’t imagine voluntarily drilling holes in them. I agree mini excavators are irreplaceable once you have one. A helpful tip, resist the urge to rent it out. The few bucks you make aren’t worth the wear and tear.
I wish I were young again I would love to run that excavator. Good choice going bigger. I'm all about having more power you just can't go wrong in that category.

thanks for the video -- I have the exact same machine - had a KX161 for about 10 years. Am thinking of studs as well as I love clearing snow with my grader bucket and blade.
We purchased a mini a few years ago as well. When you have heavy equipment you find more ways to make it useful. Moving materials is a big bonus. Less manual labour makes everyone happier!
The only downside to owning it is you can never go back to not having one!

I lived in the woods for many years with hairpin turns and hills. We would spread crushed chips on the road and then we could run our front-wheel drive Sentra up and down the road. Fill up your dump truck and dump piles alongside the road that you can get to. Then you can spread them on the ice where needed.

I couldn’t imagine not having mine. I got the exact same machine this year. So glad I didn’t get the KX040. The note was scary but man this thing is an absolute monster for land clearing and hurricane debris removal.
I think once you own one, you can never go back to not owning one!
I bought the same machine about 4 months ago. I have about 70 hrs on the clock and that is my total excavator experience. I dug the foundation for an addition to my house and the contractor knocked $7500 off the bill 😊. I am just getting permit for a large shop and I will pay for the machine by digging it’s foundation and slab. I use it several times a week and can’t imagine not having one ever again. Next is a skid steer 😂

My bud has the same kubota. He said the same thing. Sucks for clearing snow. He did end up putting big studs in the tracks but built a snow plow that quickly bolts on the small blade.
Enjoyed thoroughly all of your videos. Thought to comment on Courtney trying to burn the good hardwood vs. saving it for your wood stove. My experience has been to only burn hardwood, no pine is good pine and good pine is best for making logs , beams for building projects. You don't need pitch build up in any of your chimney and pine is notorious for that. Even when you are heating at the 275 degrees minimum recommended. Hardwood also creates creosote but far less and will burn longer with a more steady heat, much safer. Burning kiln dried pine is ok, a great kindling.
Put an old worn out tire in bottom of brush pile to help burn...NICE NEW MACHINE!...NEED NEW BUILDING FOR ALL YOUR MACHINERY... thanks 4 video. be kind.

Nice, the studs will help a lot, you will find on ice you will walk along with your bucket for traction and use it to keep moving and stay controlled. Hope the boots help, a cotton sock with a wool sock is always a good layer for feet. Good to have some room.

Keep in mind any road should slope toward (mountain side) that way if traction is lost you slide into high side not over the cliff!
Water runoff must also be considered using drain pipe installed with your excavator. A swale is used in leu of drain pipe zero cost but must be maintained, that is why you will keep the excavator.
YOU'RE A CARBIDE TRACTION STUD!....... P.S. Love the Riley cam and very glad you opened up that turn, almost put a 5 ton truck into a ditch on a similar sharp turn with a steep incline after it, in winter.
