  • We just made a HUGE life decision and bought the most expensive thing we have ever owned! When the quote to rent one for a week was equal to the monthly payment on a new one it seemed like the obvious choice. We hope our investment will pay off and it will allow us to develop the property to its full potential.

    A thought I started with during previous video. Choose the right trees (diameter spacing etc). Get some 1/2-3/4 cable & cinch it to trees. Run it thru some pvc pipe. Get yourself some really substantial canvas & drape it over the cable & pvc to provide a tent like structure for dry storage & to be able to put rig under in inclement weather. Could live under all winter if positioned correctly with necessary end enclosures & a woodburner vented correctly vented to the outside. Could even make another canvas on a cable to pull open & closed like a shower curtain.
    My rational for this suggestion is 1 so as you spend more time there that you become more familiar with the 20 acres become you lock yourself in on a location the time shows could've been better with a bit more time. 2 this set-up you could find that show may want to relocate as you start developing the property. 3 it wouldn't be as big an outlay of $ that could maybe pay for a dump hoist on your truck or maybe a water tank for truck to hall for a storage tank on site or maybe a well or a septic well. Or maybe some solar.. Just a thought.
    There you have your 1st Macqyver designed. Structure. I'm guessing you're going to have to Google MacGyver lol.
    Edited to let you know i can laugh at myself. You'd only need to vent the woodburner 1 time.

    Just jumped back to start watching every episode from the beginning.
    When a dynamically active, imaginative couple with a new chainsaw that has a large, bar, and a new excavator become the owners of a heavily wooded property?
    I was reminded of the old saying "if you have a hammer in your toolbox pretty soon many things can start to look like nails".
    To paraphrase a saying the poor trees were probably 'shaking in their roots'!

    I don't have TV so RUclips is my primary entertainment and there is a lot of stuff on here. This has quickly become my favorite RUclips channel. I was hooked on the build of the truck and the ski trips were entertaining but you guys are at a whole 'nother level now.
    Wish you were posting in real time though because I would have hauled the mini X up there for you. I'm a retired general contractor and would be able to help you guys build.
    Careful about going down the equipment rabbit hole. It's easy to get out of hand and end up with a bunch of stuff. I say that but I don't regret buying anything because it all paid for itself several times over.
    Looking forward to the next episode.

    I have the same saw. For safety's sake get chaps and a helmet. Also go with the full chisel blades its what pros use and it will save you time. 2 blades at least....and a wedge to position the tree if it starts to go bad. Also invest in a CAT tourniquet and learn how to use it and then keep it with you. EMS I'm guessing could be a long way off. Stay safe!

Once you get into clearing more than a few trees, dedicate a burn pile spot or multiple, your going to want all that brush to go away

    Congrats on the new property! Looking forward to this adventure. You made me nervous starting the chainsaw be dropping it down while pulling the cord. If the compression catches it, the bar can swing down and catch your leg. Safer to set it on the ground and step in the handle and hold it with one hand while pulling the cord with the other. You can also hold the trigger handle between your knees if you don’t want to put it on the ground. Get a blade sharpener. They are cheap and easy to use round files with guides. The second the blade touches dirt it seems to get dull. Dull blades make more heat and take longer to cut. You guys might find that you’ll need/want a chipper to get rid of the branches for all the trees and brush you take out. You’ll probably want some chains to drag the trunks to wherever you want to store them to make stuff or firewood out of them later. You guys are living the dream. We all get to watch while you put in the work. Keep it up!

    • @miguelblanco3629
      @miguelblanco3629 3 года назад +4

      One more thing, the chain will stretch as it wears and as it gets hot so check it before starting up and occasionally during long sessions of use. They make chaps to help protect your legs with Kevlar fibers in them that tangle the blade up instead of cutting through. Cheers

    Wow that was fast! I was going to say some people use a 4WD tractor with attachments, but i would now say great choice! You also have a good brand saw. Let the fun begin! lol Once you have muscle memory with the controls of the exc., it will be like an extension of your body. Be extra carefull using the exc. for logging, it only takes a second or two for a limb or whole tree to change direction and come back at you and break the glass or worse. SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS. Print up some safety first stickers and put them where you will see them? Keep watching exc. videos. I watch "Dirt Perfect" and "Lets Dig 18" and "Outdoors with the Morgans" And oh yah, Ambition Strikes lol

    • @AmbitionStrikes
      @AmbitionStrikes  3 года назад +2

      I've used quite a few 4wd tractors, they are great in flat places but they can get scary quickly on hills and tippy situations. The excavator was a huge decision but now that we've been using it for a few days it has already shown how valuable it will be for us. We've been working as a team, I wield the chainsaw to process the tress, Courtney drives the excavator to move the logs and slash around. It's all about conserving energy and putting our tools to work! Thanks for watching and thanks for the channel recommendations, I'll definitely check them out!

    Also so yall dont wrench your arm on the chain saw put the tip of your foot through the handle of the chainsaw while it's planted on the ground put the brake on use one hand to pull the rope and then other to hold it down there for when your pulling it in the air you don't where your self down and hurt your arm as much.

    I'm thinking first priority would be roads. Both the easement road and making roads for getting around the property. Your going to want to be able to get cement trucks in the out of there.
    Second would probably be clearing and stockpiling any dead trees. I'd be concerned about the possibility of forest fires. Build a pole barn. No walls; just a slab and roof. Use it for stockpiling wood to dry out. Then look into buying your own milling equipment or find someone in the area to do it for you in exchange for some of the wood. It's nice to have free material on hand for building whatever you want.

I think I was hoping maybe you could be a horse trader if any of your trees are ready to harvest & maybe trade with the guy 30 or so across the border. Full disclosure i have NOTHING to do with him as I'm many states away. You don't know if you don't try.

    I love you guys. You’re so real and funny. Riley, don’t feel too bad about the chainsaw kicking your butt. I’ve been cutting firewood all my life and every time I get a new chain, it’s always kinked up and gives me a hard time. Have you guys ever thought of putting a list together of all the things you used to build your rig (windows, heater, water heater, stuff like that)? Maybe you have already done it and I missed it? I’m seriously thinking about building my own rig after watching your videos and it would be super helpful. Keep making awesome videos!

      Water is going to be a challenge. All of the nearest neighbors were successful in finding water, but we will likely have to drill pretty deep. We're likely going to be hauling water in for the short term while we save up for the well.

    Hey you two. I'm not sure how your channel ended up on my RUclips list, but I'm super glad it did. You two are phenomenal. I'm a dog guy, and the fact that you share yours is awesome. Bailey and Boone seem to be awesome! I've been stuck inside for the past few days and have binge watched so many episodes. I could totally see me doing exactly what you are. In fact, I did put up a 2500 sq ft metal building with my buddy and son in law. None of us had ever built a metal building before but I did know how to read plans, so it got done. Not nearly as quickly as you two, but my work takes me out of town quite often, so I didn't get to work on it as often as I would have liked. Anyway, on this "episode" I saw that you had written on your white board with a permanent marker. Just an FYI, you can write on top of the permanent marker with a dry erase marker and it will erase with ease. Neatest thing I've seen. Weird, but it works! I'm continuing to watch more of your episodes. I wish I could watch them in order, but it's all good. Good luck to the both of you!

    Next step, diesel tank for the property. I would do 2, so that you fill both, then when one is gone, order more while you use the 2nd. And, if diesel prices get jacked, you have plenty. Another good piece of equipment, to compliment the excavator is a skid steer. Those things run circles around the excavator and are great for leveling property, or moving piles from here to wherever. For everything else, the excavator is key.
    Edit in: Could have it delivered to the end of your driveway, and clear the driveway as you pull it back in. Good practice and everything has to come down the driveway to get to your place. Best. wishes. peace

    • @AmbitionStrikes
      @AmbitionStrikes  3 года назад

      We have been eyeing skid steers every time we drive by one! It would be nice to have something more zippy for moving stuff around.

    On a serious note, get all the proper chain saw safety gear from your local 'Husky' dealer. Chaps, helmet visor and ear muffs, minimum. Then learn how to use it safely. In my opinion, NEVER hand hold to start it. If that chain brake isn't engaged and you slip or something, bad news. Keep it well maintained, clean it before you put it to bed and always check all the safety features are working correctly and are in place, the chain brake is your BEST friend, make sure it works. Get online and download the users manual if you don't have one. I was a Husqvarna service dealer for many years and I have come across many people that in my opinion shouldn't even use a butter knife!! Not trying to scare you but you must treat a chain saw with respect. All the best in your new adventure, regards from Down Under.

    Couple corrections, besides the expensive equipment that could be damaged in the parking lot there was also Courtney! Other correction you will have that mini forever with property! That's great you picked up a grading bucket. Never used one of those before. The hydraulic thumb is a game changer. Good move. Great for picking up rocks, moving trees even holding trees while cutting fire wood!
    So true about renting! In our area a month rental with a thumb is over $2800.00. When I started looking for used you couldn't touch anything ok for less then $20,000. This too was my largest purchase. Heck it was so confusing I wrote a blog. Since mini x buying is not at all like anything else. Say a pick up truck 150, 1500, 250, 2500...
    I too love my Ranch Husky great saw!
    Next on the to buy list will be a Side X Side, then a skid steer ( + pallet forks).
    Then you'll be all set. (Name idea Empty Wallet Mountain) LOL!

      Empty Wallet Mountain! I love it! We have always been firm believers in having the right tool for the job. The right tools are starting to get a lot more expensive though! After just a few days of running the mini (is ours still considered a mini at 13k#? These sizes are so confusing!) for a few days we are blown away by what it's allowing us to get done. It does all of the heavy lifting and moving and allows us to focus on working safely and efficiently. Plus we can put in a long hard day and still have some juice left in us. Courtney has taken to liking the driver seat of the mini (I don't blame her!) so I have been demoted to Sawyer and slash stacker. Two way radios for easy communication between us was a game changer too.
      We got a Husky 562XP and it is an amazing saw. Fuel injected even! Nothing seems to bog it down. But man, it bogged me down. We picked up the lightest 16" bar saw we could find to use for delimbing, that was much better on my body.
      Side x Side! I like the sound of that!
      Thanks so much for watching and supporting our adventure!

    "Ambitio ferit" is Latin for "Ambition Strikes".
    More specifically, "ambitio" translates, amongst other things, as "A going around or about; that which surrounds", or "A great exertion".
