    There seems to be quite a few dead trees along the trail, so another option would be fascines or corduroy roads.
    Chainsaw them down, cut to length and place the trunks and big branches across the boggy low points with the trackhoe.

    • @aigarslacis4433

      Well, been there, done that, that works as temporary solution, as in cutting the wood, cleaning the wood or so in a single year, after a year or so wood trunks start dislodging due to either ice forcing them apart, or simply heavy tractors/trucks push or even brake them. Stone is a much better permanent solution for years to come, and since there is enough of that, I would continue on that "path" rather than wood.
      I have had a mud pit created by wheeled tractor by the live stock barn when carrying straw and hay to feed, a couple of human weight(~2 feet "tall") flat boulders burried so they make large level pathway , solved all the problems permanently ...

    I've found the cedars tend to have strong roots and a tapered trunk that keeps them fairly stable. They don't often fall over and you'll see lots of standing dead in the woods. The firs, hemlocks, and especially alders will absolutely keel over in a good windstorm. That said, I'd 100% be nervous having any trees within falling distance to home and felling them is a good call.

    Those big western red cedars are high value for lumber. If you have any thoughts on milling your own lumber down the road, those cedars are for sure worth setting aside. They make some sweet interior paneling- beautiful and great smell. I don't recommend exterior use (roof shakes or siding) because of your fire zone. Dry cedar burns real easy.

    So you know, the advantages of NOT doing too much on the road (which seems wicked long) is to see how the weather is impacting it. By the end of Spring you'll easily be able to make a prioritized project list next season. You also have the winter to research when to ditch, armor, and/or make a culvert, etc. Seems like you have enough contingency vehicles to wheel it in or out. I keep thinking the right answer is to prioritize build a MF'ng stove on the ground floor and then chop MF'ng wood for a week (2-4 cords of the driest stuff you have around or old deadfall) and stack it. It won't dry out proper for burning, but at least you'll be ahead before it gets too cold. Better yet, designate an area where you are going to stack your wood and maybe dedicate a day a week to just chopping and stacking cause it takes at least 6-months to cure wood. Make note of how much wood you burn through the winter and that'll be your baseline for what you need to routinely chop/stack next Spring/Summer. I also think it would be fun to do a winter burn of all limbs and refuse, just thinking of how to systematically remove deadfall and stuff for fuel, which mitigates forest fire risk also. Uh, says I, at my teleworking desk with an oil heater at my feet and a mild winter in suburbia ahead of me. I'm stacking wood for bonfires and smore's ... what do I know ;-p. Have fun!

    • @AmbitionStrikes
      @AmbitionStrikes  2 года назад +6

      That all sounds like an excellent plan! We're going to need a heat source asap because the weather just turn a turn and our low was 19F last night!

    • @jackpatteeuw9244
      @jackpatteeuw9244 2 года назад +1

      You will need lots of gravel. Starting with 6- to fill big holes is good. Before the ground freezes make sure thee is good drainage.

    • @duckninja9349
      @duckninja9349 2 года назад +3

      @@AmbitionStrikes Cold!!! I'd add - think of staging and access for the wood. I don't like the idea of wood piled around my living structure. I think that was popular back in the day for extra insulation, protection or something... A cord inside the pole barn (but not too near the stove) guarantees a healthy supply of dry stuff and then you'll want a solid path you can wheelbarrow or transport curing wood into your ready pile. You can also stage the wood in piles of rounds (like when you cut a tree, cut it to rounds and pile 16-18" tall rounds per whatever preferred length) to start the slow drying, then quarter whatever you need for the winter, in your outside drying area, and then just routinely cut down the quarters, so you have usable side stuff slowly piling up. Maybe building a bad ass log splitter is in the future? To make this all easy... but think you need to brute force it this winter.

    • @ardentenquirer8573

  • @DanSomethingOrOther
    @DanSomethingOrOther 2 года назад +1

    It may be a lot more work now, but when you decide to work on the road, you may want to consider widening it to fit 2 cars. It will allow 2 cars to pass each other when going in different directions, create a wider surface which will be more stable with run off water and safer if you also add drainage ditches on the sides. Just my humble opinion.

  • @xysix2548
    @xysix2548 2 года назад +3

    It was mentioned by others to have a good sized wood stove in the shop area. I totally agree, but will add one more detail. Build it with internal baffles in the fire box that will recirculate the fumes until they are completely incinerated. In this fashion the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) will burn up and yield the most heat value per unit of fuel. You can also add 'heat-thief' type fins on your exhaust tubes to extract even more heat before it goes p the chimney.

    Please remove all the stumps, sharp rock etc. once you have snow, the problems they can cause will be a lot worse . And I would consider widening the access road, by removing some more small trees - you will need some place for snow piles, especially if you have some foot and more snow, you will not be able to push it "all the way" ...
    Also it seems that it would be beneficial to widen the road in some places + mark the edges with sticks, for the easier snow plowing, so you don't have to guess.

    Hey just a tip (you may already know). Just noticed right when you started limping the truck back to the shop that you were pumping the brakes. With air brakes you want to apply steady, even pressure and avoid pumping them as much as possible. With hydraulic brakes it doesn't matter as you always have pressure. With air brakes if you pump your brakes too much you'll run low on air as the compressor simply can't keep up. With most air brake systems if you run too low your brakes will suddenly lock up no matter how fast you're going.

I really think you should consider replacing all your driveway with 'Pervious Reinforced Concrete' in the future, say 12 feet wide. Do it maybe 50 foot sections. Battery powered flood lights let you work later. I actually bought some battery packs to run regular AC powered LED flood lights. It is less efficient than direct DC powered, but it is cheaper.

    Well done on the PPE on the tree felling! And that driveway screams for a tractor... Landplane or boxblade for maintaining and a snowblower to keep it open in the winter!!

    6 minus or not, stumps and sharp rocks will get you. Already had unexpected flats at my place loosing both tires.
    Still love that truck!!! Must be getting a big door for the barn, you need it.
    Have you thought about a folding stair for the barn inside? Yes an outside stair is OK in nice weather, but cold, wet, snowy days will change your mind.

      I guess something along the sides of "internal balkony" at the large garage door might be a good idea, maybe even placed conveniently to service one side of the large door ... though it might be a lot easier to make it by the back wall ...

    That last tree you felled looked to be a cedar. Do y'all plan on milling some of your trees for building material? The cedar would make for a nice sauna or interior walls or whatever y'all might come up with. Really enjoy your shows and glad you safely felled those trees. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow cause we want to see the jeep go go go 😀👍

    Hello from Mumbai India, cutting too many trees, firstly for house, then some more, better plant 4times the trees you had cleared, so much so the balance maintains and weakening of soil is controlled ( lesser soil erosion ). Hope I am not offending you good and lovely couple 🌹, Love you both. ❤️

    I know this is 8 months after the fact, but in case anyone else is in a similar situation:
    In he past, some people in remote areas built up their road foundations by laying logs across the width of the road. This meant not as much gravel and stone were needed to build up the foundation. The logs would be laid, then heavy equipment would be run over them to force them into the mud. After that everything would be covered up with stone and gravel and you'd move on to the next section of road.
    Naturally over time, the trees would break up, leading to dips in the road. But since there was now a base of rock and gravel rather than mud, you could spread more gravel over the foundation. Eventually you'd have a firm-enough foundation that you could build a concrete or asphalt road
